• Is there a production ready web application framework in Python?

  I heard lots of good opinions about Python language. They say it's mature, expressive etc... Are there any production-ready web application frameworks in Python. By "production ready" I mean : supports objective-relational mapping with caching and declarative desciption (like JPA, Hibernate etc..) controls oriented user interface support - no HTML templates but something like JSF (RichFaces, Icefaces) or GWT, Vaadin, ZK component decomposition and dependency injection (like EJB or Spring) unit and integration testing good IDE support clustering, modularity etc (like Terracota, OSGi etc..) there are successful applications written in it by companies like IBM, Oracle etc (I mean real business applications not Twitter) could have commercial support Is it possible at all in Python world ? Or only choices are : use Python and write everything from the bottom (too expensice) stick to JEE buy .NET stack

• How can I use my own connection class with a strongly typed dataset?

  I have designed a class with sqlClient.SqlCommand wrappers to implement such functionality as automatic retries on timeout, Async (thread safety), error logging, and some sql server functions like WhoAmI. I've used some strongly typed datasets mainly for display purposes only, but I'd like to have the same database functionality that I use with my class. Is there an interface I can implement or a way to hook my command/connection class into the dataset at design or runtime? Or would I need to somehow write a wrapper for the dataset to implement these types of functions? if this is the only option could it be made generic to wrap anything that inherits from dataset?

• Transportation Web App - utilizing google or bing map api

  I am working on a transportation web app and I am having a bit of a problem. First, I want to be able to define a shipping corridor, say like I-95 between Baltimore MD and Richmond VA. And store what parameters I need to define this route. Users will then use a web interface and can select various routes, in this case, I-95. Vendors will be posting constantly changing pickup locations in the application database which have a shelf life of about 2 days. Some of these locations maybe along this route. I am storing the LAT and LONG for the specific location right now. If any of these points ARE along or within 2 mile of the route (just off the highway basically - the ideal check would based on an actual highway exit but at this point anything would work), I want them to show up in my search results. Any ideas or suggestions?

• Colouring JTree's TreeNodes

  I have a JTree which I give objects that implement the TreeNode interface, and a custom TreeModel to display them (not using DefaultMutableTreeNode). I would like to change the text colour of some nodes. I can't find anything in the docs, except javax.swing.tree.DefaultTreeCellRenderer.setTextNonSelectionColor(Color newColor), but it will change everything indiscriminately, and I only need it for some nodes (specifically, broken links, i.e. nodes whose corresponding files can't be found on the disk, should be greyed out, the rest should be default). Can it be done, and how?

• How to efficiently SELECT rows from database table based on selected set of values

  I have a transaction table of 1 million rows. The table has a field name "Code" to keep customer's ID. There are about 10,000 different customer code. I have an GUI interface allow user to render a report from transaction table. User may select arbitrary number of customers for rendering. I use IN operator first and it works for few customers: SELECT * FROM TRANS_TABLE WHERE CODE IN ('...', '...', '...') I quickly run into problem if I select few thousand customers. There is limitation using IN operator. An alternate way is create a temporary table with only one field of CODE, and inject selected customer codes into the temporary table using INSERT statement. I may then using SELECT A.* FROM TRANS_TABLE A INNER JOIN TEMP B ON (A.CODE=B.CODE) This works nice for huge selection. However, there is performance overhead for temporary table creation, INSERT injection and dropping of temporary table. Do you aware of better solution to handle this situation?

  I'm a lone developer at the moment; please share you experiences on what is a good VC setup for a lone developer. My constraints are; I work on multiple machines and need to keep them synced up Sometimes I work offline I'm currently using Subversion(just the client to a remote server), and that is working ok. I'm interested in mecurial and git DVCS, but none of their use-cases make sense to my situation. EDIT: I've migrated my active development to Fossil http://www.fossil-scm.org/ after trialing it with a client. I really like the features to autosync my repositories(reducing accidental forks), the documentation support(both wiki and embedded/versioned) that supports my need to document the code and the project in different spaces, the easy to configure issue tracker, nice access control, skinnable web interface and helpful community.

• How to define the order with ImportMany attribute?

  Hi to all, I am just getting into MEF and was wondering how you could define the order of collection exported with [ImportMany]? What I mean here is if I had two classes (Class1, Class2) that implement the interface IService and each of the implementations are in two different libraries (although they could be in the same), I want the Class2 instance to be created before the Class1 instance in the IEnumerable collection defined by the ImportMany attribute. So it is like a pipeline of functionality where Class2 calls are made before Class1 calls. Also, I have an another Class (Class3 which also implements IService) in another library, which I want introduced later on (i.e. some logging utility), how do I make this the 3rd instance in the ImportMany collection? Because it's a Remote Session Bean, i have to annotate it with the following Java Annotation: @Target({ElementType.TYPE}) @Retention(RetentionPolicy.RUNTIME) public @interface Remote { Class[] value() default {}; } I only found this example for scala 2.7. In Scala 2.7, its possible to define the session bean like this: @Remote {val value = Array(classOf[ITest])} class MyEJB ... How can i use this annotation the same way with Scala 2.8? I already tried many different versions, all resulting in "annotation argument needs to be a constant", "illegal start of simple expression".   Now that I got my head wrapped around the 'C' language to a point where I feel proficient enough to write clean code, I'd like to focus my attention on project architecture guidelines. I'm looking for a good resource that coves the following topics: How to create an interface that promotes code maintainability and is extensible for future upgrades. Library creation guidelines. Example, when should I consider using static vs dynamic libraries. How to properly design an ABI to cope with either one. Header files: what to partition out and when. Examples on when to use 1:1 vs 1:many .h to .c Anything you feel I missed but is important when attempting to architect a new C project. Ideally, I'd like to see some example projects ranging from small to large and see how the architecture changes depending on project size, function or customer. • Lego-Style Cocoa Workflow Application

  Hi, I currently have to develop a system very similar to MIT's Scratch's UI. In case you don't know it, here a screenshot: http://kidconfidence.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/scratch1.png Basically you have bricks in the library on the left you can drop into the window on the right side. The problem I have is that I'm new to Cocoa and not sure what would be the best way to accomplish that. Because you can nest these bricks sometimes and other times stick them together I wonder if there is something that would help implementing that. I recognize this is not a very common interface that there are probably no implementations of that around, but maybe there are helpers for parts of this. Regards, Armin

• Erlang: Interfacing with Xalan: port driver or nif?

  I'd like to get a real XSLT processor working with erlang. Which would be the best interface, nif or port driver? According to the nif documentation, nif calls block the runtime, so they should not take long. Is processing a long xml document too long? Also, I'd like to allow erlang callbacks during the transformation. Does that seem possible? Possible with nif but not port drivers or vice versa? I've never written any C, so I figured this would be good introduction. Xalan is C++. I assume nif can work with that, right?

There's my real object on the remote server, there's the local implementation (the proxy itself), and there's the interface I provide to my program which hides the details of where the object actually is. The local representation may contact a local or a remote implementation of the object. What is the standard terminology in Java for these things? What should I name my interfaces/classes? I've seen the terms Subjects, Images, and Implementations thrown around (probably from the GOF days), but I wonder what is acceptable way to do the naming for a framework written in Java.

• iPhone: Best Method for Passing Data to and from a Server

  I am developing an iPhone application that downloads data from a website. The website database is implemented in SQL and the site itself uses the classic ASP interface. I am unsure as to which method would be best for transferring data to and from the server. Both JSON and SOAP require XML processing and I'm not sure how that affects performance or which of those two is best. What would be the best method in general for data transfer given the server configuration we currently have? I very new to this field and I'm a bit confused. Any help would be appreciated.

• How can I authenticate when using the Bugzilla Perl API in a script?

  Working from the Bugzilla API, I've written a quick Perl script to clone a Bugzilla Product (recreating all the Components under their new Product). The Bugzilla Perl API is quite easy to use from the command line. I could have just worked on the database directly, but I wanted a longer-term solution. Another option was the webservice, but I thought I'd try using the API directly this time. The one problem I'm running into is authenticating as my Bz admin user so I can create the new components. Looking at Bugzilla's Bugzilla.pm file, I see that they just run login() from a Bugzilla::Auth object. I'm not sure how to get the username and password in there. I suppose I could just add the script to the Bugzilla admin interface... Can any of you point me in the right direction?

• Implements an Undo/Redo in MVC

  Hello, I have a Java application and I want to implement an Undo/Redo option. the value that I want to stock and that I want to be able to recover is an integer. My Class Model implements the interface StateEditable and I have to redefine the 2 functions restoreState(Hashtable<?, ?> state) and storeState(Hashtable<Object, Object> state) but I don't know what to put on them. It will be really great if somebody can help me to do that. • Is it possible to call a user-space callback function from kernel space in Linux (ioctl)?

  Is it possible to expand the ioctl interface in Linux so that the user-space application can send a pointer to a function to the kernel space driver? I'm in particular thinking of ways to handle the stream in user-controllable way but doing it in the kernel. Those operations could be attached to the kernel module but this would make development a lot easier as I wouldn't need to mess with the kernel during development. More specifically, this would be the process: Data is read by the driver to a buffer. Data is handled by these user-defined functions in place. Some more handling is done, possibly with some HW blocks. Data is used by a user-space application.

  Im using the standard java ws implementation shipped with e.g. java6 (javax.jws.*). Do I have to annotate MyOwnException with e.g the @WebFault annotation? Or if this is a bad idea, are there any recommended Exceptions to throw from a webservice like this?

• "Verbose Dictionary" in C#, 'override new' this[] or implement IDictionary

  All I want is a dictionary which tells me which key it couldn't find, rather than just saying The given key was not present in the dictionary. I briefly considered doing a subclass with override new this[TKey key], but felt it was a bit hacky, so I've gone with implementing the IDictionary interface, and passing everything through directly to an inner Dictionary, with the only additional logic being in the indexer: public TValue this[TKey key] { get { ThrowIfKeyNotFound(key); return _dic[key]; } set { ThrowIfKeyNotFound(key); _dic[key] = value; } } private void ThrowIfKeyNotFound(TKey key) { if(!_dic.ContainsKey(key)) throw new ArgumentOutOfRangeException("Can't find key [" + key + "] in dictionary"); } Is this the right/only way to go?
