• Monitoring .NET ASP.NET Applications

  I have a number of applications running on top of ASP.NET I want to monitor. The main things I care about are: Exceptions: We currently some custom code which will email us when an exception occurs. If the application is failing hard it will crash our outlook... I know (and use) elmah which partly solves the problem however it is still just a big table of exceptions with a pretty(ish) UI. I want something that makes sense of all of these exceptions (e.g. groups exceptions, alerts when new ones occur, tells me what the common ones are that I should fix, etc) Logging: We currently log to files which are then accessible via a shared folder which dev's grep & tail. Does anyone know of better ways of presenting this information. In an ideal world I want to associate it with exceptions. Performance: Request times, memory usage, cpu, etc. whatever stats I can get I'm guessing this is probably going to be solved by a number of tools, has anyone got any suggestions?

• Cannot customize Solution Explorer project context menu in VS 2010

  I'm trying to customize that context menu which comes up when you right click the project in the Solution Explorer. When I goto: Tools - Customize - Commands - Context Menu (radio button) - Project and Solution Context Menus | Project (drop down) I get nothing in the "controls:" list. I can modify other context menus starting with "Project and Solution Context Menus" but none of them is the right one. Any ideas? Currently I have ReSharper, PowerTools and StyleCop installed, but I have installed and uninstalled bunch of other addins (dotTrace, CodeIt.Right, VisualHG, DevExpress, random stuff from Extension Manager).

  how can I modify the embedded photo gallery slideshow from Google's Picasa to auto repeat the pictures, i.e. play them over and over again? • Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

• Facebook Graph API - Get like count on page/group photos

  I've been testing graph API and ran into a problem. How can I get like count from photos of a page/group? I'm administrator/creator of a group. When entering in https://developers.facebook.com/tools/explorer/ certain photo ID from that group it brings almost all data, even comments, but not the like count. For like part it needs (according to docs) access token despite the fact that anyone can access that info. How to get access token of my page/group with required permissions and how to use it to get info I need? If possible I would like to get JSON from a single address if it is possible.

• Android Source code download error

  Hi all I have followed the instructions on the Android website on how to download the latest android source code files but it gives errors when i run this command: repo init -u git://android2.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git It gives the following error: Getting repo ... from git://android.git.kernel.org/tools/repo.git android.git.kernel.org[0: 199.6.1.176]: errno=Connection refused android.git.kernel.org[0: 130.239.17.12]: errno=Connection refused fatal: unable to connect a socket (Connection refused) On checking forums for its resolution, i was told that port 9418 was being blocked. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and ensured that the firewall wasnt blocking the port and also enabled the port and the above IP addresses. I also spoke to the networking peeps who ensured that no traffic from the internet is being blocked. I would be glad if i could get directions on how to proceed next. Many thanks as you respond. • Firebug is permanently inactive

  Firebug used to work fine -- until something happened -- not sure what. FF 3.6.3 on XP PRo current. The net effect is Firebug is now always inactive. The icon is present and gray as is normal. Click on the icon and I get: It does this regardless of the site. I've uninstalled Firebug and re-installed. nada. Additionally, the Tools Firebug menu yields nothing. The only unusual issue I can think of is it may of stopped working sometime after I created an additional FF profile (which has since been removed) for a test. Somehow, in removing the extra profile, my bookmarks were deleted. I recovered them from by my online-backup service. Any suggestions? I'd really like to get the Firebug functionality back. thanks.

  I'm using Eclipse Juno to create jax-ws webservice on WebSphere® Application Server V8.5 Tools. The WebService sometimes are created but most often he fails to create wsdl. For exemplify, i try to create a simple webservice named Web: import javax.jws.WebMethod; import javax.jws.WebService; @WebService public class Web { @WebMethod public String getName() { return "myName"; } } After deploy this webservice and viewing WebSphere administration page not exists any service named WebService. I tried too access the generated WebSphere wsdl from the url localhost:9080/MyProject/WebService/WebService.wsdl but this not exists. My project have a configured MANIFEST file that contains: Manifest-Version: 1.0 UseWSFEP61ScanPolicy: true I'm actually using servlet 3.0 but tried with 2.3. Anyone can help me to do WebSphere approprieate scan annotations of ws-jax and create wsdl on server?

  I am planning to use Drizzle in my next C# Mono app. Since there is no C# client available for Drizzle, I thought I would have a stab at writing my own by converting the Java client, and then making it work with DBLinq. Having seen the Java client, I realise that it's a longer job that I had anticipated, and I don't have the time. Besides the Java client is not all that mature yet. Since there is an official Drizzle C client library (libdrizzle), writing a C# wrapper might be the best solution. Are there any tools available that can assist in generating the code for this?

These tests make a request to the view and compare the returned contents. How can I disable the translations while running the unit tests? • How to adapt a SOAP Service to REST in java?

  I need to integrate some services that are external and that are offered as SOAP Services. I don't like to use SOAP inside our system for a few reasons. I think from a pragmatic point of view it should be fairly easy to adapt SOAP to REST. This is not a SOAP vs. REST question! I'm just trying to collect java libraries, code, howtos etc. to accomplish this. Due the difference in its nature I don't expect a ready made solution. Just a couple of hints for tools and such to get going.

• Plotting 500 US cities to a map

  I have 500 US cities in a MySQL table. I have the city name, state, longitude and latitude. I want to visually see these cities plotted on a map of the US. How can I do this? Are they any free tools available? Google Maps or Google Earth maybe? Obviously, it would take forever to plot each city individually. So I need a quick way of doing it, either through a program or by exporting the table as a spreadsheet and uploading it into some kind of generator that will do the plotting for me. Please let me know your ideas. Thanks.

• Strange sql query result from Mysql and from PHP mysqli_query!

  this is the query command echo from php web page: SELECT DISTINCT FT.file_type_name AS type,FT.file_type_en AS tp,FT.file_type_id AS fti, MATCH(keywords) AGAINST ('words <2' IN BOOLEAN MODE ) AS score FROM movie AS M,file_type AS FT WHERE MATCH (keywords) AGAINST ('words <2' IN BOOLEAN MODE ) AND M.type_cn = FT.file_type_id HAVING score >=1 ORDER BY FT.file_type_order; I am running above query in MySQL tools HeidiSQL and got only tow row records which score are 1.66666 and 2. If I remove the HAVING clause I would got three row records with one's score less than 1. But the same query I get from PHP mysqli_query() were all the three records and the one which score less than 1 became 1. What is the problem. Any tips will be pleasure. Thank you very much!!

• Embedded MongoDB when running integration tests

  My question is a variation of this one. Since my Java Web-app project requires a lot of read filters/queries and interfaces with tools like GridFS, I'm struggling to think of a sensible way to simulate MongoDB in the way the above solution suggests. Therefore, I'm considering running an embedded instance of MongoDB alongside my integration tests. I'd like it to start up automatically (either for each test or the whole suite), flush the database for every test, and shut down at the end. These tests might be run on development machines as well as the CI server, so my solution will also need to be portable. Can anyone with more knowledge on MongoDB help me get idea of the feasibility of this approach, and/or perhaps suggest any reading material that might help me get started? I'm also open to other suggestions people might have on how I could approach this problem...

• How can I merge CSS definitions in files into inline style attributes, using Perl?

  Many email clients don't like linked CSS stylesheets, or even the embedded <style> tag, but rather want the CSS to appear inline as style attributes on all your markup. BAD: <link rel=stylesheet type="text/css" href="/style.css"> BAD: <style type="text/css">...</style> WORKS: <h1 style="margin: 0">...</h1> However this inline style attribute approach is a right pain to manage. I've found tools for Ruby and PHP that will take a CSS file and some separate markup as input and return you the merged result - a single file of markup with all the CSS converted to style attributes. I'm looking for a Perl solution to this problem, but I've not found one on CPAN or by searching Google. Any pointers?   Is there a decent GUI tool for Windows that allows to publish files from/to a remote FTP (or SFTP) server with the same ease of use that WinMerge offers in local discs? I'll basically use it to upload changes to web sites. I've tried like a dozen tools and they're all terrible. They have difficult interfaces, you need to spend ten minutes configuring absurdly complicate project settings, there's no simple way to ignore specific files or they use custom databases that break when someone else uploads files—not to mention deployment frameworks that force you to script everything in their custom language. I don't need or even want to schedule or automate. I want a manual process I can review. I'm tired of picking files one by one in Filezilla while reading the Subversion logs. I'd love an open source tool but...

  I'm trying to work out a good method to manage code changes on a large project with multiple teams. We use subversion at the moment, but I want more flexibility in building a new release than I seem to be able to get with subversion. Here's roughly I want: for each developer to create easily identifiable patches for the project. Each patch delivers a complete user story (a releasable feature or fix). It might encompass many changes to many files. developers are able to easily apply and remove their own and other patches to facilitate testing release manager selects the patches to be used in the next release into a new branch branch is tested, fixes merged in, and ultimately merged into live teams can then pull these changes back down into their sandboxes. I'm looking at stacked git as a way of achieving this, but what other tools or techniques can deliver this sort of workflow?

  I want to create a web app that will use wicket, hibernate and spring frameworks. My IDE of choice is Eclipse, I am using maven for the .war generation and I am running Mac OS. What steps should I follow to correctly install and configure all the tools so as to have a project running that relies on these 3 frameworks. • Is there are standard way to store a database schema outside a python app

  I am working on a small database application in Python (currently targeting 2.5 and 2.6) using sqlite3. It would be helpful to be able to provide a series of functions that could setup the database and validate that it matches the current schema. Before I reinvent the wheel, I thought I'd look around for libraries that would provide something similar. I'd love to have something akin to RoR's migrations. xml2ddl doesn't appear to be meant as a library (although it could be used that way), and more importantly doesn't support sqlite3. I'm also worried about the need to move to Python 3 one day given the lack of recent attention to xml2ddl. Are there other tools around that people are using to handle this?

• Recognizing synchronization object hanging two 3rd party executables

  I'm using a 3rd party tool, which uses a 4th party plugin. Occasionally, the tool will hang when launched. Looking at the stack traces, I can see a few threads are waiting on WaitForSingleObject, and my bet is that they're blocking each other. Some of the threads start at the 3rt party tool, and some at the 4th party plugin. What I'd like to do is file the most detailed complaint to the 3rd party tool vendor, assuming it's its fault (I don't trust their local support to get those details themselves). For that, I'd like to: Find out what are the synchronization objects currently waited on Find out who has created those synchronization objects Tools currently at hand are VS2005, WinDbg and Process Explorer. OS is Window 7 64 bit. Any suggestions?

• Why wouldn't an S3 ACL "stick"?

  We would like to set an ACL to allow access to one of our buckets with a partner account. We've tested the process on a test account and everything works fine. On our production account/buckets, however, we can set the ACL and see the update but as soon as we attempt to access the bucket from the other account we get a forbidden response. Afterwards, when we look at the ACL list for the bucket, the permission is gone. We've tried using both Amazon's new S3 tool in the AWS Management Console and CloudBerry Explorer and both tools exhibit exactly the same behavior. Using the same process to update an ACL from our test account works as expected ( the ACL update "sticks" ). What would cause the ACL to not "stick"? Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix/workaround the problem?
