  In User Controls or Custom Controls DO NOT use ViewState to store non public properties. Persisting non public properties in ViewState results in loss of functionality if the Page hosting the controls has ViewState disabled since it can no longer reset values of non public properties on page load. • Getting Internal Name of a Share Point List Fields

  Over the last 2 weeks i was developing a tool to migrate Lotus notes data base to Share point. The mapping between Lotus notes schema and share point list schema was done manually in an xml file for out tool. To map the columns we wanted internal names of each field. There are quite a few ways to achieve this, have explained few below. If you want internal names for one or 2 columns you can do so by navigating to the list setting and clicking on the column name. Once you are in column's details, you can check the query string of the page. The last item in the query string would be field's internal. Replace all "%5f" with '_' will give you the field internal name. In my case there were more than 80 columns. I used power shell to get the list of columns with details. Open windows Powershell and paste the following script after modifying the url and list name. All the site content will be listed at the left hand side, expand the list, right click and select generate wrapper class.

• Need help deciding if Joomla! experience as a good metric for hiring a particular prospective employee.

  My company has been looking to hire a PHP developer. Some of the requirements for the job include: an understanding of design patterns, particularly MVC. some knowledge of PHP 5.3's new features. experience working with a PHP framework (it doesn't matter which one). I interviewed a man today who's primary work experience involved working with Joomla!. As an employee, he will be required to work on existing and new web applications that use Zend Framework, CakePHP and/or CodeIgniter. It is my opinion that we shouldn't dismiss hiring a developer just because he has not used the same technologies that he'll be using on the job. So, I'd like to know about the kind of coding experience working with Joomla! can provide. I've never bothered to take more than a brief look (if that) at the Joomla! package, so I'm hoping to lean on the knowledge of my peers. Would you consider Joomla! to contain a professional code-base? Is the package well organized, and/or OO in general, or is it more like WordPress where logic and presentation are commingled? When working with Joomla!, is the developer encouraged to use best practices? In your opinion, would experience working with Joomla! garner the skills needed to get up to speed with Zend or CakePHP quickly, or will there be a steep learning curve ahead of the developer? I'm not saying that Joomla! is a bad technology, or even that it is lower on the totem pole when compared to the frameworks I've mentioned. Maybe it's awesome, I dunno. I simply have no idea!

• Ubuntu won't boot after initializing the Build Environment for Android

  My laptop worked perfectly util I initialized the build environment for Android. The GUI won't start. It looks like some kinds of graphics card problems. I tried to fix it but after trying a lot of solutions on the internet nothing worked. (I only know basic linux stuffs.) I've already reinstalled the OS. However, I still want to build the Android from source. Any idea what might cause the problem? any workaround? • Adsense click bot is click bombing my site

  I have a site that get's roughly 7,000 - 10,000 page views per day right now. Starting around 1 AM on 7/1/12 I noticed the CTR was rising dramatically. These clicks would be credited then de-credited soon after. So, they were obviously fraudulent clicks. The next day I had about 200 clicks in account with about 100 of them being fraudulent. It's about 3 - 8 per hour evenly dispersed for each of the three ads 24 hours a day. This leads me to believe that it's some sort of Adsense click bot. Also, I removed the ads last evening then put them back up around 3AM and the invalid clicks started within 10 minutes. I signed up for statcounter.com to analyze the exit links on the Adsense. Then I conditionally blocked ads for the IP address of the person / bot I suspected doing this. But, I think that the bot has several proxies to choose from and can refresh IP addresses. I've notified Google through the invalid click form / email 4 times over the past two days in order to let them know I'm aware of the situation and am working on a solution. I've also temporally removed all ads on that site. How can I block a bot like this? Thank you.

  I am using google maps and returning html/lat/long from my MySQL database Currently A user picks a business category e.g; "Video Production". an ajax call is sent to a CodeIgniter controller the Controller then queries the db, and returns the following data via JSON Lat/Long of the marker HTML for the popup window this is approximately 34 rows in the database across two tables per business the ajax call receives this data and then plots the marker along with the html onto the map The data that is returned from the controller is one big json object... This is done for all businesses that exist in the Video Production category (currently approx 40 businesses). As you can see, pulling this data for multiple categories (100s of businesses) can get very very taxing on the server. My question is Would it be more beneficial to modify the process flow as such: a user picks a business category e.g; "Video Production". an ajax call is sent to a CodeIgniter controller the controller then queries the database for the location base information lat/long level (used to change marker icon color) This would be a single row per business with several columns the ajax call receives this data and then plots the marker on the map when the user clicks a marker an ajax call is sent to a CodeIgniter Controller the controller queries the database for the HTML and additional data based on business_id and if not, what are some better suggestions to this problem? In summary this means rather than including the HTML and additional data along for each business, only submitting minimal location information and then re-query for that information when each business marker is clicked. Potential Downsides longer load times when a user clicks a marker icon more code?? more queries to the database

• Advice on a good comeback strategy after years of java abstinence

  It's almost 5 yrs since I left the java IT-project/enterprise business. Before I was a highly skilled enterprise developer / OO architect with more than 10 years experience in the business. I was proficient in many of those enterprise related technologies, including DWHing. Since then I haven't been doing any large scale programming, a little bit of C, Python, some dips into Scala, hacking a small java-plugin framework, opengl, but only as fun projects. Now I want to re-enter the java stage again, i.e. I'm looking for job opportunities as a developer. But I fear I might have lost much of my former punching strength, e.g. I would have to give my SQL knowledge a deep refreshing breath, re-visit basic stuff like design patterns, enterprise architectures, etc. and probably learn the new stuff like EJB3.1, JEE 6 too. I also missed the whole scrum craze. So from your own experience, what subject should I tackle first? Like technology (which ones?) or design skills (uml..)? But what I'm also wondering is since the basic design / architectural principles haven't changed much by now, what would be the chance on the job market for someone like me who left the java-world at a time where everything was less fragmented and EJB2.1 and XDoclet were de-facto standards? And how could I convince a potential employer that I'm still an effective on-the-job learner? Should I rather aim for "junior positions" ? Lots of questions but I'd be really glad if you could share your (encouraging :) thoughts with me. cheers! (btw I'm based in Austria)

  I've been using verbatim string literals for some time now, and never quite thought about using a regular string literal until I started to come across them in Microsoft provided XNA samples. With that said, I'm trying to implement a new AudioManager class from the Net Rumble sample. I have two (2) issues here: Question 1: In my code for my GameplayScreen screen I have a folder location written as the following, and it works fine: menuButton = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuButton"); menuClose = content.Load<SoundEffect>(@"sfx/menuClose"); If you notice, you'll see that I'm using a verbatim string, with a forward slash "/". In the AudioManager class, they use a regular string literal, but with two backslashes "\". I understand that one is used as an escape, but why are they BACK instead of FORWARD? (See below) soundList[soundName] = game.Content.Load<SoundEffect>("audio\\wav\\"+ soundName); Question 2: I seem to be doing everything correctly in my AudioManager class, but I'm not sure of what this line means: audioFileList = audioFolder.GetFiles("*.xnb"); I suppose that the *xnb means look for everything BUT files that end in *xnb? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with my file locations, as the sound effects are not playing.   Hello, I'm Sophia. I have an interest in self-learning either Python, or Ruby. The primary reason for my interest is to make my life more stable by having freelance work = $. It seems that programming offers a way for me to escape my condition of poverty (I'm on the edge of homelessness right now) while at the same time making it possible for me to go to uni. I intend on being a math/philosophy major. I have messed with Python a little bit in the past, but it didn't click super well. The people who say I should choose Python say as much because it is considered a good first language/teaching language, and that it is general-purpose. The people who say I should choose Ruby point out that I'm a very right-brained thinker, and having multiple ways to do something will make it much easier for me to write good code. So, basically, I'm starting this thread as a dialog with people who know more than I do, as an attempt to make the decision. :-) I've thought about asking this in stackoverflow, but they're much more strict about closing threads than here, and I'm sort of worried my thread will be closed. :/ TL;DR Python or Ruby for freelance work opportunities ($) as a first language? Additional question (if anyone cares to answer): I have a personal feeling that if I devote myself to learning, I'd be worth hiring for a project in about 8 weeks of work. I base this on a conservative estimate of my intellectual capacities, as well as possessing motivation to improve my life. • Kubuntu 11.04 bad experience, Gimp crashes and other bugs

  I installed Kubuntu 11.04 64bit today. First let me expose some issues, this is not a rant, just some observations on Kubuntu 11.04 :) Flash doesn't work. The package "flashplugin-installer" was installed by rekonq. But still no flash. Additional Drivers (jockey-kde) doesn't show up automatically after first login. I tried to delete a large file (19,2 GB), an error appeared: "Please empty the trash first, no more space available" or something like that, but you know what? My trash was empty! (Then I found in Dolphin the settings to increment the max size of the trash). Amarok has no play/pause/forward/back buttons, only after changing settings to show those buttons on the top bar. GTK applications like ubuntu software center, inkscape... are in english, but my default language is "german". Only gimp allows to install the "de" language pack. The numblock turns off after each restart. In the KDE Control Center, the "remember last state" of numblock is set. But this is not working. I had some crashes: Nepomuk, Policy-kit, plasma-workspace and gimp. But now to the important stuff. I really need Gimp to work. • My blog not even ranking for exact title match [on hold]

  I have original in detail blog posts related to blogging and SEO. This domain has been dropped (expired) 2 times before my acquisition. I am the 3rd owner of the domain since 143 days. Blog posts are not ranking even for exact titles. Google+ or LinkedIn shares will show up instead of my content.Some blog posts are not even indexed. I am hardly getting around 7 organic visits / day. Suspect: Dropped domain, less likely used for spam( WayBack machine (2 drops) 3 captures since 2004, I don't know whether there was Email spam) (But no manual actions in WMT, so no reconsideration request). What's the reason for this? Should I wait? How can I tell Google that ownership is changed and the domain is now spam-free? or should I de-index it and start a new blog? Thank you, for any advises.

• Files backup utility with incremental backups that would keep backup device clean

  I've tested a few of backup utilities and still haven't found one that would satisfy me. Almost every one of them has two options: - full backup - not an option to use frequently - incremental backup - seems right, but there's one thing about it: Incremental backup builds on a base of a full backup, backing up only those files, that were created/changed. The thing is, that after some time you've got a lot of unwanted files from the old backups bloating your backup device. Also, if you'd accidentally delete your full (first) backup file, then the differential backups would be corrupted (you wouldn't be able to restore them). The thing I'm looking for is a program, that would backup files simply by copying them. It would check the backup device whether it contains the file (unchanged): - if yes, it should proceed to the next file (we've got current version backed up) - if no, it would copy the file to the backup device - if the device contains a file that is no longer on our disk, the program would delete it from the backup device Is there any such utility, that would work this way? If not, do you have any hints on how to backup fairly big amounts of data (around 20gb) quite frequently with incremental backups and not be exposed to those unwanted effects of backup size puffing up?

• Code maintenance: keeping a bad pattern when extending new code for being consistent or not ?

  I have to extend an existing module of a project. I don't like the way it has been done (lots of anti-pattern involved, like copy/pasted code). I don't want to perform a complete refactor. Should I: create new methods using existing convention, even if I feel it wrong, to avoid confusion for the next maintainer and being consistent with the code base? or try to use what I feel better even if it is introducing another pattern in the code ? Precison edited after first answers: The existing code is not a mess. It is easy to follow and understand. BUT it is introducing lots of boilerplate code that can be avoided with good design (resulting code might become harder to follow then). In my current case it's a good old JDBC (spring template inboard) DAO module, but I have already encounter this dilemma and I'm seeking for other dev feedback. I don't want to refactor because I don't have time. And even with time it will be hard to justify that a whole perfectly working module needs refactoring. Refactoring cost will be heavier than its benefits. Remember: code is not messy or over-complex. I can not extract few methods there and introduce an abstract class here. It is more a flaw in the design (result of extreme 'Keep It Stupid Simple' I think) So the question can also be asked like that: You, as developer, do you prefer to maintain easy stupid boring code OR to have some helpers that will do the stupid boring code at your place ? Downside of the last possibility being that you'll have to learn some stuff and maybe you will have to maintain the easy stupid boring code too until a full refactoring is done)

• How should Code Review be Carried Out?

  My previous question has to do with how to advance code review among the developers. Here I am interested in how the code review session should be carried out, so that both the reviewer and reviewed are feeling comfortable about it. I have done some code review before, but the experience sucks big time. My previous manager would come to us-- on an ad hoc basis-- and tell us to explain our code to him. Since he wasn't very familiar with the code base, I spent a huge amount of times explaining just the most basic structure of my code to him. This took a long time and by the time we were done, we were both exhausted. Then he would raise issues with my code. Most issues he raised were cosmetic in nature ( e.g, don't use region for this code block, change the variable name from xxx to yyy even though the later makes even less sense, and so on). We did this a few rounds, and the review session didn't derive much benefits for us, and we stopped. What do you have to do, in order to make code review a natural, enjoyable, thought stimulating, bug-fixing and mutual-learning experience?
