• Finalists for the Microsoft Accelerator for Windows Azure

  Today, I am pleased to announce the ten finalists for the Microsoft Accelerator for Windows Azure powered by TechStars. These startups are about to launch into a three-month program where they will develop new products and businesses using Windows Azure. The response to the program has been fantastic - we received nearly 600 applications from entrepreneurs in 69 countries around the world, spanning a host of industries including retail, travel, entertainment, banking, real estate and more.  There were so many innovative ideas and amazing teams that it really made the selection process hard.  We finally landed on 10 finalists, based on their experience, qualifications, and innovative business ideas built on the cloud. This fall’s Windows Azure class includes: Advertory – Berlin, Germany. Advertory helps local businesses increase revenue and build customer loyalty. Appetas – Seattle, WA. Appetas' mission is to make restaurants look as beautiful online as they do on the plate! BagsUp – Sydney, Australia. Find great places from people you trust. Embarke – San Diego, CA. Embarke allows developers and companies the ability to integrate with any human communication channel (Facebook, Email, Text Message, Twitter) without having to learn the specifics, write code, or spend time on any of them. Fanzo – Seattle, WA. Fanzo puts sports fans in the spotlight. Find other fans, show off your fanswagger and get rewarded for your passion. MetricsHub – Bellevue, WA. A service providing cloud monitoring with incident detection and prebuilt workflows for remedying common problems. Mobilligy – Bellevue, WA. Mobilligy revolutionizes how people pay their bills by bringing convenient, secure, and instant bill payment support to mobile devices. Realty Mogul – Los Angeles, CA. Realty Mogul is a crowdfunding platform for real estate where accredited investors pool capital and invest in properties that are acquired, managed and eventually resold by professional private real estate companies and their management teams. Staq – San Francisco, CA. Back-end as a service for APIs. Socedo – Bellevue, WA. A simple and effective web application for lead generation and relationship management on Twitter. Each startup will be hosted in Seattle and mentored by entrepreneurs and venture capitalists as well as leaders from Windows Azure and other Microsoft organizations. The teams will spend the first month ideating and refining their business concepts with input and advice from their mentors as well as Microsoft customers, followed by two months of design and development. They will present their results to investors and Microsoft partners at an event in mid-January. We are really looking forward to seeing how their businesses evolve.  These teams have demonstrated incredible energy, passion, and innovative capabilities – and they are ready to show the world what’s possible with Windows Azure. • Oracle WebCenter: The Best of the Best

  You may remember that the key goals of the new release of WebCenter are providing a Modern User Experience, unparalleled Application Integration, converging all the best of the existing portal platforms into WebCenter and delivering a Common User Experience Architecture.  Last week, we provided an overview of Oracle WebCenter, and this week, we'll focus on Convergence and how the new release of Oracle WebCenter is the Best of the Best..Our development team has been working very hard to bring all the best capabilities from each of the existing portal products into one modern user experience platform that provides a robust foundation for moving customers into the future.  Each of the development teams still maintain their existing products to support the current customers,  but they've been tasked with converging their unique best of breed features into the new WebCenter release so that it will meet the broadest set of use cases possible. For example, we've taken the fastest and most scalable portlet engine in the industry with Oracle WebLogic Portal, integrated it within WebCenter, and improved performance further, to deliver even more performance for our customers.  In addition, we've focused on extending the reach of all the different user experience resources so that customers can deliver robust capabilities into their existing portals, applications, composite applications, dashboards, mobile applications, really any channel that requires information.  And finally, we've combined a whole set of community and multi-site capabilities leveraging the pioneering capabilities of Plumtree portal directly into the new WebCenter release.  While at the same time we've built and delivered the new WebCenter release, we've also provided new feature releases of all the existing products.  In this way, customers can continue to gain value out of their existing investments while at the same time have the smoothest path to upgrading to the new WebCenter release. With the new WebCenter release, we are delivering a converged platform to address all portal requirements that have been delivered by different point products in our portal portfolio in the past. Additionally, this release delivers the most modern user experience that goes well beyond the experience the other portal products provided. This is because the new WebCenter release has been built from the ground up with modern technologies around rich clients, SOA, and customizations compared with other portal products whose architecture has been adapted to add capabilities like AJAX, personalization, and social computing.The new WebCenter release addresses the broadest set of use cases using single product set and single architecture spanning extranet sites to social communities. It helps customers manage, maintain and develop one technology set, but leverage it throughout their organization whether it's embedded in an application or a new destination for improved customer and employee productivity. • DialogFX: A New Approach to JavaFX Dialogs

  How would you like a quick and easy drop-in dialog box capability for JavaFX? That's what I was thinking when a weekend presented itself. And never being one to waste a good weekend...  :-) After doing some "roll-your-own" basic dialog building for a JavaFX app, I recently stumbled across Anton Smirnov's work on GitHub. It was a good start, but it wasn't exactly what I was after, and ideas just kept popping up of things I'd do differently. I wanted something a bit more streamlined, a bit easier to just "drop in and use". And so DialogFX was born. DialogFX wasn't intended to be overly fancy, overly clever - just useful and robust. Here were my goals: Easy to use. A dialog "system" should be so simple to use a new developer can drop it in quickly with nearly no learning curve. A seasoned developer shouldn't even have to think, just tap in a few lines and go. Why should dialogs slow "actual development"?  :-) Defaults. If you don't specify something (dialog type, buttons, etc.), a good dialog system should still work. It may not be pretty, but it shouldn't throw gears. Sharable. It's all open source. Even the icons are in the commons, so they can be reused at will. You can pass custom button labels in and designate the index of the default button (responding to the ENTER key) and the cancel button (for ESCAPE). Optional parameters, of course, but nice when you may want them. Also, the showDialog() method actually returns the index of the button pressed. Rather than create EventHandlers in the dialog that really have little to do with the dialog itself, you can respond to the user's choice within the calling object. Or not. Again, it's your choice.  :-) And finally, I've Javadoc'ed the code in the main places. Hopefully, this will make it easy to get up and running quickly and with a minimum of fuss. How Do I Get (Git?)   When installing Ubuntu 11.10 on Windows XP (2nd option in installer), the install failed with popup. How can I fix this? These days, watching an ordinary ant painstakingly carry a leaf in Animal Planet can be an exhilarating experience as you get to see not only the slightest movement but also the demarcation line between the insect’s head, thorax and abdomen. The crystal clear imagery was made possible by the sharp minds and the tinkering hands of the scientists that have designed the modern world’s HDTV. What is HDTV and what makes people so agog to have this new innovation in TV watching? HDTV stands for High Definition TV. Television viewing has indeed made a big leap. From the grainy black and whites, TV viewing had moved to colored TVs, progressed to SD TVs and now to HDTV. HDTV is the emerging trend in TV viewing as it delivers bigger and clearer pictures and better audio. Viewers can have a cinema-like TV viewing experience right in the comforts of their own home. With HDTV the viewer is allowed to have a better viewing range. With Standard (SD) TV, the viewer has to be at a distance that is from 3 to 6 times the size of the screen. HDTV allows the viewer to enjoy sharper and clearer images as it is possible to sit at a distance that is 1.5 or 3 times the size of the screen without noticing any image pixilation. Although HDTV appears to be a fairly new innovation, this system has actually existed in various forms years ago. Development of the HDTV was started in Europe as early as 1940s. However, the NTSC and the PAL/SECAM, the two analog TV standards became dominant and became popular worldwide. The analog TV was replaced by the digital TV platform in the 1990s. Even during the analog era, attempts have been made to develop HDTV. Japan has come out with MUSE system. However, due to channel bandwidth requirement concerns, the program was shelved. The entry of four organizations into the HDTV market spurred the development of a beneficial coalition. The AT&T, ATRC, MIT and Zenith HDTV combined forces. In 1993, a Grand Alliance was formed. This group is composed of researchers and HDTV manufacturers. A common standard for the broadcast system of HDTV was developed. In 1995, the system was tested and found successful. With the higher screen resolution of HDTV, viewing has never been more enjoyable. • Defining Social Media Terms

  As I talk about social in the context of retail, I sometimes get tripped up on different terms. I know what I mean, but the audience may have something else in mind. So I decided to see if I could find some well accepted definitions for common terms. While there are definitions on the Internet, I'm not sure they are well accepted. After reviewing several, here's what I came up with: Social Network: a structure of individuals and groups connected together by commonality. That seems pretty straightforward. A group of friends, co-workers, music fans, etc. The key here is that they have something in common that connects them. Social Media: Internet channels that support the collaborative publishing of information by and for social networks. The key here is to differentiate between traditional one-way media, and conversational social media. When its social its two-way, allowing both the publishing and consuming of information. Examples are blogs, wikis, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Social Marketing: the use of social media for marketing, public relations, and customer service. Wikipedia actually includes "selling" here but I think that's separate from marketing, as you'll see further down below. Most people look at social media as entertainment, but the marketing angle adds business value. This is where retailers discover and engage customers to build a relationship. Social Merchandising: the integration of social media and product discovery. Whereas marketing is focused more on brand image, customer engagement, and promotions, merchandising is more directly trying to convert browsers into purchases. This includes deciding what customers want, often by asking the social network, and deciding how to position products to the social network. Social Selling: the incorporation of e-commerce into social media. While on a social media site, social selling enables the purchasing of goods/services in the user's context, without leaving the social media channel. If a user clicks on an advertisement and is taken to an e-commerce site, then that's really just web advertising and not social selling. Well, do these terms and definitions make sense? • Future of Active FoxPro Pages - secured

  Finally some official news about Active FoxPro Pages, aka AFP. The German company BvL Bürosysteme Vertriebs GmbH bought all rights of Active FoxPro Pages from the insolvency stock. Being a former customer and intensive user of AFP since version 2.0 BvL has own interest in the continuation of AFP on current and future web servers. Together with their partners Christof Wollenhaupt (Foxpert Software Development & Consulting) and Jochen Kirstätter (IOS Indian Ocean Software Ltd) BvL will continue with development, support and marketing of AFP in the upcoming weeks. There will be an updated version of AFP, the relaunch of the website, re-enabling of activation server, re-establishment of support channel, and much more... Personally, I am relieved that this superb product made its way out of the dust of the past years. The goal of the video is to learn something in 1 minute. In our daily life we are all very busy and hardly have time for anything. No matter how much we are busy – we all have one minute of time. Sometime we wait for a minute in elevators, at the escalator, at a coffee shop, or just waiting for our phone reboot. Today is a fantastic day – 12/12/12. • Using SurfaceFormat.Single and HLSL for GPGPU with XNA

  I'm trying to implement a so-called ping-pong technique in XNA; you basically have two RenderTarget2D A and B and at each iteration you use one as texture and the other as target - and vice versa - for a quad rendered through an HLSL pixel shader. step1: A--PS--B step2: B--PS--A step3: A--PS--B ... In my setup, both RenderTargets are SurfaceFormat.Single. In my .fx file, I have a tachnique to do the update, and another to render the "current buffer" to the screen. Before starting the "ping-pong", buffer A is filled with test data with SetData<float>(float[]) function: this seems to work properly, because if I render a quad on the screen through the "Draw" pixel shader, i do see the test data being correctly rendered. However, if i do update buffer B, something does not function proerly and the next rendering to screen will be all black. For debug purposes, i replaced the "Update" HLSL pixel shader with one that should simply copy buffer A into B (or B into A depending on which among "ping" and "pong" phases we are...). From some examples i found on the net, i see that in order to correctly fetch a float value from a texture sampler from HLSL code, i should only need to care for the red channel.
