  • Should I keep separate client codebases and databases for a software-as-a-service application?

    My question is about the architecture of my application. I have a Rails application where companies can administrate all things related to their clients. Companies would buy a subscription and their users can access the application online. Hopefully I will get multiple companies subscribing to my application/service. What should I do with my code and database? Seperate app code base and database per company One app code base but seperate database per company One app code base and one database The decision involves security (e.g. a user from company X should not see any data from company Y) performance (let's suppose it becomes successful, it should have a good performance) and scalability (again, if successful, it should have a good performance but also easy for me to handle all the companies, code changes, etc). For the sake of maintainability, I tend to opt for the one code base, but for the database I really don't know. What do you think is the best option?

  • Where does Rails get it's datetime for creating records?

    I have a rails app with a data model called 'jobs' and i'm faced with a critical design choice crossroads. I don't know enough about Rails and it's inner workings to be able to say for sure what I should do despite a complete read of the rails and ruby docs. I want to be able to accurately display the age of a job record in days. So when a customer logs in, they can see that the job they submitted is 'x' days old. Where does a rails app on Heroku get it's time stamps? From Heroku? or the customers system clock? If a customer has a out of date system clock and submits a job, it could really mess up the sorting of their job list, not to mention me the overseer of job records. Any advice out there? EDIT: Just to be clear, i'm not asking how to list jobs by their date, but to which clock does a rails app on Heroku base it's records.

    I'm planning to create a game on my own and will most likely hire an artist in the future. I just want to know if making a game in 2d will a lot cheaper than making it on 3d? Here's my plan: If it will be a 2d game.. I'll probably make a platform game. More like a Braid level of graphics. If it will be a 3d game.. Closest of graphics I'll ask for will be far cry 1 or if possible oblivion. So any thoughts? I'm funding all of it on my own. It will be my first game but will use maybe an engine around if it will be a 3d game. If 2d, I have my own engine lying around here. Thank you, Balls

Edit: I want to use the calender to sync my appointments with google - e.g. I open my "ubuntu-calender", make a new appointment and it syncs with google calendar. Also return way. The same with contacts. I want a see and edit all my contacts in an app and have them sync with google.     I'm trying to add a news carousel on my OneHub site. I know there are quite a few plugins that I can use, but I'm looking for a ready-to-use hosted solution where people can log-on and manage the content, and I can simply include as an iFrame widget on our OneHub site. We would prefer to use Expression Engine, since we're using this on some of our other websites. It looks like Expression Engine + JQuery Cycle Rotator might be an option, not sure how easily I can get this onto OneHub though... WordPress has a carousel plugin as well that I'll explore. Anyhow, while I'm trying out these options, I figured I would put a question out there for any thoughts or advice, other solutions, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Alan

  • A separate solution for types, etc?

    I'm currently in progress updating some engine-code(which does not work, so it is more like creating a engine). I've decided to swap over to SFML(instead of my own crappy renderer, window manager, and audio), Box2d(since I need physics, but have none), and some small utils I've built myself. The problem is that each of the project mentioned over use different types for things like Vector2, etc. So to the question; Is it a good idea to replace box2d and SFML vectors with my own vector class? (Which is one of my better implementations) My idea then was to have a seperate .lib with all my classes that should be shared between all the projects in the solution.

  • SMTP mailbox unavailable - intermittent and self-inflicted

    I have an app that runs daily, sending confirmation emails to dozens of customers. Emails are sent using SMTP with authentication. The app also has some error handling, and occasionally anonymous SMTP is used to notify the webmaster that an e-mail issue has been encountered (a malformed email address, usually). Whenever these warning notifications are sent, the customer notifications that follow throw an error: "Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.7.1 Unable to relay". The customer notification emails are sent, but my app drops into the exception handler. And all subsequent customer notification emails have this problem. Everything is fine next time the programs run, until a webmaster warning email is sent. Anyone have an ideas what would cause this? My first thought was that the client didn't like being switched back and forth between anonymous to authenticated modes. I created a separate client for each mode, but that didn't help.

  • What's the best way to handle slopes for a platfomer game using Box2D

    I would like to know if there is any known solution for handling the player's movement on slopes using Box2D engine. I tried to do it using a circle as the player. Everything was fine until I tried to walk on slopes, the main problem is that due to gravity, the circle does not stop on the slope. Please if somebody has tried this before I'll appreciate it. If you have a better solution without the physics engine would be fine for me too. Thank you.

  • Do you think that GAE alone is enough to justify learning Python over Ruby?

    Considering the fact that you don't have to get involved in setting up/buying a server or even buying a domain, do you think that fact alone is enough to choose one over the other? I don't necessarily want to work on Google App Engine, I just find it convenient when it comes to hosting/environment/etc. and wondering if that's a good enough reason to learn python. In any case, I'm not looking for a debate between python and ruby but more on Google App Engine and whether its value is enough to dictate the language you should learn.

    I was wondering if someone could help me how to manage temporarily inactive website in regards of SEO and search engine. the case is i managed a big ecommerce site, and sometime i need to put down page(s). could be days, could be weeks, could be months, and it depends on our vendor. if my visitors land on the page that been temporarily inactive then i can give them a message that the vendor they looking for is not available at this time and he can check back later OR check another vendor with similar products, but how do i send my message to search engine robots? if i use 301 status and forward URL page to another similar products, then the chance that the current URL being deindex is huge while i still want to use that URL for the future if my vendor want to re-join. any advise will highly appriciated

    It's an idea I've heard repeated in a handful of places. Some more or less acknowledging that once trying to solve a problem purely in SQL exceeds a certain level of complexity you should indeed be handling it in code. The logic behind the idea is that for the large majority of cases, the database engine will do a better job at finding the most efficient way of completing your task than you could in code. Especially when it comes to things like making the results conditional on operations performed on the data. Arguably with modern engines effectively JIT'ing + caching the compiled version of your query it'd make sense on the surface. The question is whether or not leveraging your database engine in this way is inherently bad design practice (and why). The lines become blurred further when all the logic exists inside the database and you're just hitting it via an ORM.

    Microsoft has recently launched Razor view engine with ASP.NET MVC RC2. It’s going to be promising one. There are lots of features bundled with this view engine. But in earlier version of ASP.NET 3 MVC. We were are not having Synatx intellisense provided for asp.net mvc views  in Visual Studio 2010. So either we have to depend third party tools like Resharper or we have to manage it without intellisesnse. But with ASP.NET MVC 3 RC2 Microsoft has moved one step forward and its providing syntax intellisense without installing any third party addons in Visual Studio. Here is example of it.     I'm learning how to develop an android app (nothing serious, just for learning and fun), so I devised the following goal: an app that learns with users actions and, some time later, starts to suggest some useful things. For example: The user add some notes daily, in the morning, and mark some of them as done generally on thursdays and sundays, at evening. Based on that behaviour and the relation of the notes marked as done, the app will prioritize notes that are more propense to be marked, and avoid notifying in days where no note is marked. This is a silly example but I think it ilustrates well what I want to do. I know this is a matter of machine learning, but I don't know where I should start learning. To anyone interested, I'm build a backend in Python, so any libraries or frameworks in this language are very welcome. The frontend, by the way, is sencha touch + phonegap.
