• guidline for promoting a web forum or portal

  I am a web application developer, have developed a lot of sites, portal and apps for clients. Now I want to have own such sites that with which I can do business. But I don't know what are steps to do so. What I know is make a site or portal. But what after that? There are lot of people having so much traffic on sites built with some simple open source. Many of them are forums. I also wanted to start a forum and a web portal. I can develop that or can have open source. But what after that? Content entry and SEO? Is it all to promote a portal or site? Do SEO nowadays work ? or it is all about marketing and advertising? I have no idea about that so please tell what you guys suggest. thanks for every one's opinion in advance.

• Oracle Tutor - Is Anyone Reading Your Documentation?

  If you are responsible for documenting your business practices, wouldn't it be nice to know if anyone is using the documentation? If the employees find it useful? You might want to consider surveying the users of the documentation on a regular basis. There are a number of free survey tools online (search for "free survey tools"), and you can have a survey ready in a matter of minutes. It's as simple as gathering a list of questions and a list of email addresses. For the questions, here are some suggestions. How often do you access the policy and procedure site? How useful is the site? How easy is it to navigate the site? How often are your questions answered on the site? What suggestions do you have to make the site more useful? You may want to consider just asking a few questions each month so that employees can complete the survey in less than 5 minutes (you'll get more responses). Make sure you have several comment boxes in the survey so that the employees can give suggestions. As the users of your documentation, the employees may have some terrific ideas that will enhance the usability of your policy and procedure site. • What is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System?

  In order to understand what an Enterprise Resource Planning System is let us look at a classic American kids snack, the Rice Krispy Treat if we conceptually view the treat as a company’s internal applications as a whole.  Furthermore we can view a company’s departmentalized software applications as the theoretical Rice Krispies in the treat. In addition, the Rice Krispies consist of a combination of ingredients that be broken down into data, user interfaces and business logic. Next, we have the margarine or butter that is used to help the marshmallows bind with the Rice Krispies; this role in our conceptual view is taken by a data source typically as a relational database management system. Finally we have the melted marshmallows which act as the ERP software that connects all of the individual departmental software applications in to one unified system that allows all user one unified system to interact with all of the individual dispersed systems. An example of this would be if a customer places an order with a telephone operator and once the orders is processed an employee in the shipping department can see the order ready for fulfillment on his order screen. The ERP acts a go between for various independent departmental systems so that they can integrate with one another.

• Automated backups for Windows Azure SQL Database

  One of the questions that I've often been asked is about how you can backup databases in Windows Azure SQL Database. What we have had access to was the ability to export a database to a BACPAC. A BACPAC is basically just a zip file that contains a bunch of metadata along with a set of bcp files for each of the tables in the database. Each table in the database is exported one after the other, so this does not produce a transactionally-consistent backup at a specific point in time. To get a transactionally-consistent copy, you need a database that isn't in use.The easiest way to get a database that isn't in use is to use CREATE DATABASE AS COPY OF. This creates a new database as a transactionally-consistent copy of the database that you are copying. You can then use the export options to get a consistent BACPAC created.Previously, I've had to automate this process by myself. Given there was also no SQL Agent in Azure, I used a job in my on-premises SQL Server to do this, using a linked server configuration.Now there's a much simpler way. Windows Azure SQL Database now supports an automated export function. On the Configuration tab for the database, you need to enable the Automated Export function. You can configure how often the operation is performed for you, and which storage account will be used for the backups.It's important to consider the cost impacts of this as well. You are charged for how ever many databases are on your server on a given day. So if you enable a daily backup, you will double your database costs. Do not schedule the backups just before midnight UTC, as that could cause you to have three databases each day instead of one.This is a much needed addition to the capabilities. Scott Guthrie also posted about some other notable changes today, including a preview of a new premium offering for SQL Database. In addition to the Web and Business editions, there will now be a Premium edition that has reserved (rather than shared) resources. • Finishing an iteration early

  I'd like some input on this on those working with agile methodologies... A current project is finding that development on our planned user stories is finishing some time before the end of the iteration, and that the testing effort and business acceptance is what's actually dragging us out longer towards the end. This means that the devs in question have spare time, and they're essentially going out to the iteration+1 backlog and starting work on cards there before our current iteration cards are 'done'. As iteration manager, I want to put a stop to this - I want a more team-orientated approach where the group takes ownership of getting all the cards done, as opposed to "Well, dev's done so what do I dev next?" The problem I face is convincing the team of this. On one hand, I understand why the devs don't want to test the code they've written (there are unit tests they write of course, but the manual testing to be done could be influenced by their bias). The team sees working ahead as making our next iterations easier, because a lot of the work is done before we start. I see this as screwing with the whole system of planning/actuals - but it's difficult to convince the team as to why this matters. What advice can you guys and girls give? How do we stop devs reaching ahead? What should they be doing instead? How much of a problem is this in the scheme of things, if things are still getting done?

• Discovering Your Project

  The discovery phase of any project is both exciting and critical to the project’s success.  There are several key points that you need to keep in mind as you navigate this process. The first thing you need to understand is who the players in the project are and what their motivations are for the project.  Leaving out a key stakeholder in the resulting product is one of the easiest ways to doom your project to fail.  The better the quality of the input you have at this early phase the better chance you will have of creating a well accepted deliverable. The next task you should tackle is to gather the goals for the project.  Specifically, what does the company expect to get for the money they are about to layout.  This seems like a common sense task, but you would be surprised how many teams to straight to building the system.  Even if you are following an agile methodology I believe that this is critical. Inventorying the resources that already exists gives you an idea what you are going to have to build and what you can leverage at lower risk.  This list should include documentation, servers, code repositories, databases, languages, security systems and supporting teams.  All of these are “resources” that can effect the cost and delivery schedule of your project. Finally, you need to verify what you have found and documented with the stakeholders and subject matter experts.  Documentation that has not been reviewed is actually a list of assumptions and we all know that assumptions are the mother of all screw ups. If you give the discovery phase of your project the attention that it deserves your project has a much better chance of success. • An experiment: unlimited free trial

  The .NET Demon team have just implemented an experiment that is quite a break from Red Gate's normal business model. Instead of the tool expiring after the trial period, it now continues to work, but with a new message that appears after the tool has saved you a certain amount of time. The rationale is that a user that stops using .NET Demon because the trial expired isn't doing anyone any good. We'd much rather people continue using it forever, as long as everyone that finds it useful and can afford it still pays for it. Hopefully the message appearing is annoying enough to achieve that, but not for people to uninstall it. It's true that many companies have tried it before with mixed results, but we have a secret weapon. The perfect nag message? The neat thing for .NET Demon is that we can easily measure exactly how much time .NET Demon has saved you, in terms of unnecessary project builds that Visual Studio would have done. When you press F5, the message shows you the time saved, and then makes you wait a shorter time before starting your application. Confronted with the truth about how amazing .NET Demon is, who can do anything but buy it? The real secret though, is that while you wait, .NET Demon gives you entertainment, in the form of a picture of a cute kitten. I've only had time to embed one kitten so far, but the eventual aim is for a random different kitten to appear each time. The psychological health benefits of a dose of kittens in the daily life of the developer are obvious. My only concern is that people will complain after paying for .NET Demon that the kittens are gone.

• Best industry to work for as a developer.

  Hi guys, Hmmm, StackOverflow now warns me of: "The question you're asking appears subjective and is likely to be closed." I've been an avid java (J2SE, JEE) developer for over 5 years now (and I'm not complaining, even though I want to go back to Delphi & C++). My contract has just ended and I'm wondering of possible job to further tackle. I've done banking and insurance industry for all my career (with 1 year on a Fortuner 500 company) and pretty much, banking is the slowest (and boring) industry to work for (IMHO) since they're strict in their business practices (fair enough). The upside is that they pay. My question is: What is the best industry for a developer, who tends to get bored relatively quickly, to work for? Is it also worthwhile for me to do consultancy (and if so, what type of consultancy)? PS There's no gaming industry in South Africa, so suggesting it requires that I have to travel to a country where gaming is alive! I don't see the Community Wiki checkbox, so I don't know how to make this a wiki.

• Payroll Customers Must Apply Mandatory Patches to Maintain Your Supportability

  The HRMS Suite of products has minimum required Rollup Patch (RUP) levels as well as additional mandatory patches that our customers must apply to ensure they are in compliance for support.  Without these patches, customers risk not being able to apply any fixes for issues they encounter as these RUPs and mandatory patches are the minimum patch level expected by Oracle Support and Oracle Development.  Core Payroll and International Payroll customers must apply the yearly Rollup Patch within 12 months of its issue. Legislative Payroll customers have additional requirements for the Rollup Patch, as the RUP generally is a pre-requisite for the next Year End/Fourth Quarter/Year Begin payroll processing supported by Oracle. These minimum RUP patches and other mandatory patches for your product or legislation are created with the following goals in mind: Compliance: Manage the people in your organization within the requirements of a specific country. Supportability: Ensure you are on a common code base so that if problems are identified, patches can be readily provided to you. • Social Media APIs and Their C# Counterparts

• Demantra Implementation Tip Windows and Unix or Linux

  Hello!  Are you implementing using a third party or consulting resources?   Recently we have seen some cases where customers no longer have a windows installation.  After the initial install and configuration, once the instance has gone live, the windows install is either deleted or most likely no longer with the customer as the same was installed on the implementers' laptop to start with. As a result when support comes back requesting the customer to apply a patch and/or upgrade they do not have a windows installation.  This has started happening after Oracle Demantra gave them the option to configure the engine on Unix.  Workaround: It is advisable that the customer keep their Windows installation intact for further patching and/or upgrade.  It is aslo possible that the implementer had installed Demantra on his Windows box and you do not have access to it any more.  It is possible that with the web and engine on Unix, and the silent installer having downloaded all the executable for Business Modeler, to work on the User's client machine, you may no longer need the windows install. I have not tested the above

  When migrating companies from legacy environments to the cloud, invariably you run into older hierarchical, flat file, VSAM, ISAM and other legacy data stores. There are many advantages to moving these databases into a relational database structure. The most important which is that most cloud providers run on relational database models. AWS, for example, supports Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL. The top three 'other reasons' for moving to a relational database are: 1. Data Access – Thousands of database access tools from query creation to business intelligence. 2. Management and monitoring – Hundreds of tools for management and monitoring of the database. 3. Leverage all the free tools from relational database vendors. Free Oracle database tools include: -Application Express – WYSIWIG browse based application development and deployment. -SQL Developer – SQL and PL/SQL development. Database object maintenance. What is interesting is that Big Data NoSQL databases and XML databases are taking us back to the days of VSAM (key value databases) with NoSQL and IMS (hierarchical) with XML databases?
