• Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, now available for download

  Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available for general download for almost a week now.  The Beta of SP1 came couple of months back and it did a lot of performance enhancements, added support for HTML5 tags and few other stuff related to web development.  Now, the final release of SP1 is available.  The good part is that, if you had installed the SP1 beta, you don’t have to remove the Beta and start all over again.  You can apply the final release on top of the Beta and it works like a charm. So, in simplified terms, what is new in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Before I start listing it down, I was checking if there was an MSDN article available on this and found http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg442059.aspx  While it reads (Beta), the same holds good for the release candidate as well.  Unlike VS 2008 SP1 and .NET 3.5 SP1 (which came together), this release doesn’t add any new project templates/item templates. However, there are lot of enhancements related to Web Deployment, Debugging and Unit Testing for .NET 3.5 applications. So, how does one find if you are running the correct version of SP1 final release.   This has been driving me crazy...I have VS 2008 and am developing vb.net applications. How do I specify if I am building a debug or release version? The description I found of how to do this on the Microsoft site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wx0123s5.aspx) don't seem to be accurate. This should be pretty straight forward shouldn't it? It seems that a friend of mine that does C# development says it is easy in his environment. Are the VS environments different between C# and VB?

• OS X Server App ail not accept login credentials

  I cannot login to the server app and i know for sure all the login info is right. every time i enter my password the name window shakes to tell me it's invalid. I never post unless I'm out of ideas and I need it to be up so I can host my splash page tonight. i've spoken with "certified apple" specialists at some local mac stores and they are stumped too. Something is going on with the apache server, that's all i know for sure. I'll be monitoring this closely so any requests for info, etc. can be filled instantly. Thanks in advance. here's a few things i've noticed: I can ssh successfully into the server address as both root and admin. I've been fussing with the workgroup manager and could use guidance if that's where the problem lies. console shows this message repeatedly (org.apache.httpd[1890]) Exited with code: 1).   Oracle released a few days ago ADF Essentials, which is a free version of its Oracle ADF Framework. Oracle ADF Essentials can run on the Glassfish Application Server, well explained by Shay here  . Glassfish is also certified to run ADF Essentials Application. However, It could be possible to run ADF Essentials Applications in a Java EE Container. So, I’ll describe the steps to run the ADF Faces Rich Client demo application into a Tomcat 7. Before we start, you should download the files: • Apache Tomcat 7 : http://tomcat.apache.org/download-70.cgi • Oracle ADF Essentials 11.1.2.3 : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/downloads/index.html • Oracle ADF Faces Components Demo 11.1.2.3: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/downloads/index.html Steps: 1. Extract your tomcat 7. In my case, I choose D:\ apache-tomcat-7.0.29 2. Extract ADF Essentials zip file inside the %TOMCAT_HOME%\lib 3. Put the rcf-dvt-demo.war file inside the %TOMCAT_HOME%\webapps 4. Open the file %TOMCAT_HOME%\bin\catalina.bat (or .sh if you’re in linux environment) and add in the end of the line ‘set JAVA_OPTS=%JAVA_OPTS% %LOGGING_CONFIG%’ this -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m If you don’t do this, probably when you start you’ll see a OutOfMemory error. 5. Here is the little trick, tomcat does not come with jsf jar’s, so you have to put there. So, I went to the Oracle Jdeveloper 11.1.2 instalation and search for this files: • jsf-api.jar • jsf-impl.jar • glassfish.jstl_1.2.0.1.jar 6. You’re ready to start tomcat in %TOMCAT_HOME%\bin\startup.bat If everything is fine, you will be able to open your favourite browser and type http://localhost:8080/rcf-dvt-demo/faces/index.jspx

• Email Deliverability on Yahoo is very poor. Any suggestions please?

  All other ISPs (Google, AOL, Hotmail) are fantastic, hitting 98-100% in the inbox. Yahoo is very random, and lately our deliverability has dropped drastically. All IPs are senders certified by Return Path and supposedly that automatically whitelists our IPs and allows us to send as many emails as we want (from what my boss says). Do I bother with applying to Yahoo's bulk sender form? I run every email campaign through: SpamAssassin (Excellent Scores) Test Accounts (for test deliverability) Old school HTML format I'm running out of ideas and I'm starting to be in the hot seat and I am very fearful for my job position. If you can offer any wise words i will be very grateful. Thank you in advance.

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/StuartBrierley/archive/2013/10/16/biztalk---removing-bam-activities-and-views-using-bm.exe.aspxOn the project I am currently working on, we are making quite extensive use of BAM within our growing number of BizTalk applications, all of which are being deployed and undeployed using the excellent Deployment Framework for BizTalk 5.0.Recently I had an issue where problems on the build server had left the target development servers in a state where the BAM activities and views for a particular application were not being removed by the undeploy process and unfortunately the definition in the solution had changed meaning that I could not easily recreate the file from source control.  To get around this I used the bm.exe application from the command line to manually remove the problem BAM artifacts - bm.exe can be found at the following path:C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010\TrackingC:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2010\TrackingStep1 :Get the BAM Definition FileRun the following command to get the BAm definition file, containing the details of all the activities, views and alerts:bm.exe get-defxml -FileName:{Path and File Name Here}.xmlStep 2: Remove the BAM ArtifactsAt this stage I chose to manually remove each of my problem BAM activities and views using seperate command line calls.  By looking in the definition file I could see the names of the activities and views that I wanted to remove and then use the following commands to remove first the views and then the activities:bm.exe remove-view -name:{viewname}bm.exe remove-activity -name:{activityname}

  Hi folks! I installed on a Vista x64 machine Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (with integrated SQL from the installation package) and when I try to add an MDF file to a project or to the App_Data when working with web, I get the following message: Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URl: http:go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=49251. Just to make sure: SQL 2005 express is installed and I connect to it via SSMS. Update: I am 90% sure that this is a Microsoft bug with x64 machines.

• Unable to copy files previously extracted from archives created on a Mac, even after claiming ownership

  I reinstalled Windows on my computer today, and backed up my music to a USB drive. Now, I'm trying to copy the files onto my fresh Windows partition, but I'm unable to copy files that I obtained within my previous Windows installation from zip archives created on Macs. When I try to copy those previously-extracted files, I get an error saying that I need permission from S-1-5-21-...-1000 (a bizarre long ID). The first thing I tried was to take ownership of the files by setting my new user account as the owner, but that resulted in errors saying that I need permission from myself! Some Googling suggested adding antivirus suggestions, so I excluded the relevant folders from Microsoft Security Essentials, but the issue persists. For what it's worth, it seems that some program (so far I've only installed Chrome, Microsoft Security Essentials, and the latest Windows updates) created an empty folder named 601c8c7f0e0c03f725 at the root of my external USB hard drive. What gives?

• SSIS DSN Not Showing as ODBC Data Source

  I have been following the directions here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlintegrationservices/thread/05ccd778-b78c-4a83-a10a-c4ae412cc6e4 And ran into a problem where my System DSN is not showing up as a ODBC provider. I found this which seemed promising: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000277 I was not able to delete the key but followed but I did what was suggested: "If unable to delete the key, double-click the key and erase the Data value entered. Once done, the value should read ' (value not set) '" However, after following the instructions my System DSN still does not appear as an option. The USER DSN however does show...has shown but does not work as I get a permissions error. Any ideas?

• Monitor-Specific Color Profile Results In Yellow Grayscale Images

  I recently purchased a new Acer S201hl monitor. Many lay reviews compliment its color accuracy with people noting only a bit of a blueish tinge. After a little time, Windows found, and I installed, the Acer drivers via Microsoft Update. During the installation process, the software installed an ICC profile for the monitor from Acer. I recently noticed that when I view photos using Windows Live Photo Gallery, the colors are wrong. For example, grayscale document scans appear with yellow backgrounds instead of white backgrounds. This happens with both my external monitors and my ThinkPad's built-in screen. When I removed the monitor-specific profile from the list of profiles associated with a monitor (for example, removing the Acer profile from the Acer monitor), the problem went away for that screen. I checked with Microsoft KB939395 and though it says "an incorrect color profile [...] is used for the monitor," the profile associated with my ThinkPad's screen seemed to be correct, based on its name.

• Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

  Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported. • Oracle Sun Solaris 11.1 Completes EAL4+ Common Criteria Evaluation

  Oracle is pleased to announce that the Oracle Solaris 11.1 operating system has achieved a Common Criteria certification at Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4 augmented by Flaw Remediation under the Canadian Communications Security Establishment’s (CSEC) Canadian Common Criteria  Scheme (CCCS).  EAL4 is the highest level achievable for commercial software, and is the highest level mutually recognized by 26 countries under the current Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement (CCRA).  Oracle Solaris 11.1 is conformant to the BSI Operating System Protection Profile v2.0 with the following four extended packages. (1) Advanced Management, (2) Extended Identification and Authentication, (3) Labeled Security, and (4) Virtualization. Common Criteria is an international framework (ISO/IEC 15408) which defines a common approach for evaluating security features and capabilities of Information Technology security products.
