• Inserting multiple links to one image in Confluence

  I am setting up a Wiki in Confluence v3.5.1 I have added a visio diagram (JPG) to a page (this diagram will take up most of the page) - This diagram depicts the workflow between developers and support and clients. I envisage users being able to click on different parts of the diagram and it to open up child pages with more details about that particular process (with videos on 'how-to' do that specific task, like log issues in Jira) However, from what I can see, there is no way from the Confluence editor to add multiple links to the one image, right? I looked at Anchors, but this does not look like it will do the job. So, what is the best option? I remember Dreamweaver having these sorts of tools built in, and there appears to be other utilities that can help put in image map HTML tags, but I cannot see a way of easily editing the HTML in Confluence editor. Also worried about the headache this could cause with managing future changes of the page.

• Code Review process

  I'm looking for a light-weight code review process. A couple of requirements, the reviewer must be able to do the review alone at the time of his/her choosing (not tied to check-ins), the reviewer must be able to easily find the target code, the review has to leave some document showing what was reviewed. I know there are tools available for code review but I work in a very ridig environment and introducing new tools is not an option. One idea I've been thinking about is to create a new Visual Studio Task List token called REVIEW, and use it to mark the code that needs reviewing. Something like, // REVIEW doe_john: New method, not sure about the exception. Then we would add a Review workitem in TFS (we're using the CMM template). Another possibility, which I would actually prefer, would be to have developers create a TFS Review workitem and add links to code to it, but I don't know if this is possible. Obviously you can add a link to a file, but I'd like to have a link to a particular method.

• Permanent redirect domain to www subdomain without web.config

  I've just set up a site via 1and1 and have run into an issue, I want to accomplish the simple task of redirecting the root domain to the www sub domain however due to complications I cant seam to find a way to get it to work. I'm on a Microsoft (asp.net) package so can't use .htaccess, also the IIS server they have doesn't have the URL redirect module installed (so can't use <rewrite> in web.config). They have built in HTTP forwarding options however if I set the root domain to redirect to the www sub domain it just infinitely redirects. Hopefully there is some obvious option/method I've missed during the past two days of searching!

• Cowboy Agile?

  In a previous post, I outlined the rules of Scrum.  This post details one of those rules. I’ve often heard similar phrases around Scrum that clue me in to someone who doesn’t understand Scrum.  The phrases go something like this: “We don’t do Agile because the idea of letting people just do whatever they want is wrong.  We believe in a more structured approach.” (i.e. Work is Prison, and I’m the Warden!) “I love Agile.  Agile lets us do whatever we want!” (Cowboy Agile?) “We’re Agile, but we use a process that I’ve created.” (Cowboy Agile?) All of those phrases have one thing in common:  The assumption that Agile, and I mean Scrum, lets you do whatever you want.  This is simply not true. Executing Scrum properly requires more dedication, rigor, and diligence than happens in most traditional development methods. Scrum and Waterfall Compared Since Scrum and Waterfall are two of the most commonly used methodologies, a little bit of contrasting and comparing is in order. Waterfall Scrum A project manager defines all tasks and then manages the tasks that team members are working on. The team members define the tasks and estimates of the stories for the current iteration.  Any team member may work on any task in the iteration. Usually only a few milestones that need to be met, the milestones are measured in months, and these milestones are expected to be missed.  Little work is ever done to improve estimates and poor estimators can hide behind high estimates. Stories must be delivered every iteration, milestones are measured in hours, and the team is expected to figure out why their estimates were wrong, even when they were under.  Repeated misses can get the entire team fired. Partially completed work is normal. Partially completed work doesn’t count. Nobody knows the task you’re working on. Everyone knows what you’re working on, whether or not you’re making progress and how much longer you think its going to take, in hours. Little requirement to show working code.  Prototypes are ok. Working code must be shown each iteration.  No smoke and mirrors allowed.  Testing is done in lengthy cycles at the end of development.  Developers aren’t held accountable. Testing is part of the team.  If the testers don’t accept the story as complete, the team can’t count it.  Complete means that the story’s functionality works as designed.  The team can’t have any open defects on the story. Velocity is rarely truly measured and difficult to evaluate. Velocity is integral to the process and can be seen at a glance and everyone in the company knows what it is. A business analyst writes requirements.  Designers mock up screens.  Developers hide behind “I did it just like the spec doc told me to and made the screen exactly like the picture” Developers are expected to collaborate in real time.  If a design is bad or lacks needed details, the developers are required to get it right in the iteration, because all software must be functional.  Designers and Business Analysts are part of the team and must do their work in iterations slightly ahead of the developers. Upper Management is often surprised.  “You told me things were going well two months ago!” Management receives updates at the end of every iteration showing them exactly what the team did and how that compares to what' is remaining in the backlog.  Managers know every iteration what their money is buying. Status meetings are rare or don’t occur.  Email is a primary form of communication. Teams coordinate every single day with each other and use other high bandwidth communication channels to make sure they’re making progress.  Email is used only as a last resort.  Instead, team members stand up, walk to each other, and talk, face to face.  If that’s not possible, they pick up the phone. IF someone asks what happened, its at the end of a lengthy development cycle measured in months, and nobody really knows why it happened. Someone asks what happened every iteration.  The team talks about what happened, and then adapts to make sure that what happened either never happens again or happens every time.   That’s probably enough for now.  As you can see, a lot is required of Scrum teams! One of the key differences in Scrum is that the burden for many activities is shifted to a group of people who share responsibility, instead of a single person having responsibility.  This is a very good thing, since small groups usually come up with better and more insightful work than single individuals.  This shift also results in better velocity.  Team members can take vacations and the rest of the team simply picks up the slack.  With Waterfall, if a key team member takes a vacation, delays can ensue. Scrum requires much more out of every team member and as a result, Scrum teams outperform non-Scrum teams working 60 hour weeks. • Why do operating systems do low level stuff in C and C++? Why not just C++?

  On the Wikipedia page for Windows, it states the Windows is written in Assembly for the bootloader and task switcher, and C and C++ for kernel routines. This confuses me because AFAIK, you can call C++ functions from an extern "C"'d block as C++ is just C with extra features (all of which can be rewritten in C if you wanted to AFAIK). I can get using C for the kernel functions so pure C apps can use them (like printf and such), but if they can just be wrapped in an extern "C " block, then why code in C? So my question is: Why would a kernel be written in both C and C++ instead of just C++

  Hi all, In SharePoint 2010, This is rare error, I got when I deploy and activate Feature using VS2010. Deployment works file  but in activation process it get stuct and throws error. Error occurred in deployment step 'Activate Features': The field with Id {GUID} defined in feature {GUID} was found in the current site collection or in a subsite. When I googled I found very good solution  from Sandeep Snahta Blog. http://snahta.blogspot.hk/2011/10/error-in-activate-features-from-visual.html As suggested in this blog, there is two option to overcome this error; Close VS2010 and restart again. • Philly GiveCamp 2010

  Spent the weekend helping out several non-profits doing what we like to do best...  Designing, developing and making people very happy with their new websites, systems, applications and features.  Form what I saw at this GiveCamp about 75 percent of the non-profits needed updated or new websites supporting CMS features and the ability for staff members to update the content on their websites.... Some cool apps were designed and developed..... A centralized system for distribution of daily schedules and task assistance to autistic clients was a show stopper with an awesome central management interface, IPhone and in the future windows phone support for tactile, auditory and visual cues. SharePoint was upgraded and forms were automated for a volunteer fire company that desperately needed some automation to help the fireman do their primary job. Many cool sites for non-profits that had ether an outdated or non existent web presence.

• Design patterns and multiple programming languages

  I am referring here to the design patterns found in the GOF book. First, how I see it, there are a few peculiarities to design pattern and knowing multiple languages, for example in Java you really need a singleton but in Python you can do without it you write a module, I saw somewhere a wiki trying to write all GOF patterns for JavaScript and all the entries were empty, I guess because it might be a daunting task to do that adaptation. If there is someone who is using design patterns and is programming multiple languages supporting the OOP paradigm and can give me a hint on how should I approach design patterns. An approach that might help me in all languages I use(Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby): Can I write good application without knowing exactly the GOF design patterns or I might need just some of them which might be crucial and if yes which one, are there alternatives to GOF for specific languages, and should a programmer or a team make their own design patterns set?

• ubuntu is very slow

  Hello all. I am new with Ubuntu, and it is very slow(even in Ubuntu 2D). The performance is degraded for almost any task. I just reinstalled with amd64, and tried updating the Nvidia drivers with Nvidia Xserver. but it made no difference. • Crashes while playing Mp3 songs

  I have Downloaded and Installed Ubuntu last month while downloading codecs for playing Music and Video Formats my Laptop (Dell XPS) crashed. later i again started the system now the problems i face are 1) After Signing in as User/Admin the wallpaper loads while all other windows disappear no UI (task bar and dock) is displayed even after say 30 min. 2) I uninstalled and reinstalled Ubnutu hence there were no problems but when i play Music files the Laptop crashes and the same sequence as above follows this has happened for last 6 times. 3) Whenever the UI disaapears after logging in the Hard Disk starts to heat up and there is considerable increase in power usage of the system. where in the power drain is notable. • How should calculations be handled in a document database

  Ok, so I have a program that basically logs errors into a nosql database. Right now there is just a single model for an error and its stored as a document in the nosql database. Basically I want to summarize across different errors and produce a summary of the "types" of errors that occured. Traditionally in a SQL database the this normalization would work with groupings, sums and averages but in a NoSQL database I assume I need to use mapreduce. My current model seems unfit for the task, how should I change the way I store "models" in order to make statistical analysis easy? Would a NoSQL database even be the right tool for this type of problem? I'm storing things in Google AppEngine's BigTable, so there are some limitations to think of as well.

• Configuring mouse buttons to switch between apps?

  I just installed 14.04, so I'm using the default setup (Unity, I guess). I have these two extra mouse buttons on the side of my mouse. Is there any way to map these so they can switch between open apps? What would be perfect is if clicking on button 6 (or whatever it is) would cycle forward through apps, button 7 would go backwards, and holding one of the buttons would show the task list and let you click on the app you want. That's really what I want.

• Spring MVC vs raw servlets and template engine?

  I've read numerous articles about the Spring MVC framework, and I still can't see the benefits of using it. It looks like writing even a simple application with it requires creating a big hodgepodge of XML files and annotations and other reams of code to conform to what the framework wants, a whole bunch of moving parts to accomplish a simple single task. Any time I look at a Spring example, I can see how I can write something with the same functionality using a simple servlet and template engine (e.g. FreeMarker, StringTemplate), in half the lines of code and little or no XML files and other artifacts. Just grab the data from the session and request, call the application domain objects if necessary, pass the results to the template engine to generate the resulting web page, done. What am I missing? Can you describe even one example of something that is actually made simpler with Spring than using a combination of raw servlets with a template engine? Or is Spring MVC just one of those overly complicated things that people use only because their boss tells them to use it?
