  I need to retrieve what's the current date and time for the database I'm connected with SQLAlchemy (not date and time of the machine where I'm running Python code). • How to store account-specific information in ASP.NET MVC 2

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. There are two tables like "FIRST_KIND_OF_USERS" and "SECOND_KIND_OF_USERS". Both are mapped to the default aspnet_users table via UserId column. Each of them has it's own integer primary key column like "FirstKindOfUsersId". When a user is trying to add some data to the database, for instance, "Create a new Task" I would like to add a new row in Tasks table with "FirstKindOfUsersId" value. Where should I store or get this value? At the moment I have these possible solutions: Get "FirstKindOfUsersId" value by User.Identity.Name each time; Use SESSION[] for storing these values (Where and when should I save these ones?)   Hi guys. I'm building a site, and I need to query my last two tracks from my soundcloud account and display them on my page. I've read the Soundcloud API documentation but it seems obscure and far from my reach. I've installed the PHP library for using the API and Oauth, and set up my SoundCloud application to get my Consumer Keys, but I can't start the OAuth session. I'm using this library. I was wondering if maybe you could hand me some sample code for doing this. That would be great!!

• Assigning a MVC Controller property from Asp.Net page

  I don't know if I've understanding MVC correctly if my question makes no sense, but I'm trying to understand the following: I have some code on a controller that returns JSON data. The JSON data is populated based on a choice from a dropdown box on an Asp.Net page. I thought (incorrectly) that Session variables would be shared between the Asp.Net project and the MVC Project. What I'd like to do therefore (if this is possible), is to call a Sub on the MVC that sets a variable before the JSON query is run. I have the following: Sub SetCountryID(ByVal CountryID As Integer) Me.pCountrySelectedID = CountryID End Sub Which I can call by the following: Response.Write("http://localhost:7970/Home/SetCountryID/?CountryID=44") But this then results in a blank page - again obviouslly totally incorrect! Am I going about MVC the wrong way or do I still have a hell of a lot more learning to do? Is this even possible to do?

• Using setSourceType with image picker up hides status bar

  I am pretty sure this is a bug but I thought I would check. I used the camera overlay to add a button so that on the iphone a user can switch from the camera view to the photo library. When button is taped the source type switches fine but the status bar is missing from the photo library. Throughout the rest of that session the status bar remains missing from all views evet thougth isStatusBarHidden reports NO. This is how the camera overlay view is created if (cameraOverlayView == nil) { [[NSBundle mainBundle] loadNibNamed:@"CameraOverlayView" owner:self options:nil]; } If camera is available this is when I set source type and add overlay if ([UIImagePickerController isSourceTypeAvailable:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera]) { [imagePicker setSourceType:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera]; [imagePicker setCameraOverlayView:cameraOverlayView]; } Here is the action statement to change source type. (IBAction)selectImage; { [imagePicker setSourceType:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypePhotoLibrary]; } If I don't tap the button on the overlay there is no problem with the status bar. PS. I did submit a bug report on this.

• Transient network dropout for Xen DomU's

  We've got a CentOS server running a cluster of virtuals. Occasionally the cluster's internal network drops out for a minute or so ... and then comes back. The problem is somehow related to the actual network traffic, but it is not a simple load issue. (The system is generally lightly loaded, and the problem occurs irrespective of actual load.) The setup: CentOS 5.6 on Dom0, various CentOS on the DomU's Hardware - a Dell R710 with a BroadCom NextXpress 2 NIC (sigh) using the latest drivers for the NIC from BroadCom Xen configured to use network-bridge and vif-bridge Some iptable tweaks to route an unrelated port to one of the virtuals. The system has one externally visible IP address, and Dom0 runs an Apache httpd configured with a number of virtual hosts each of which reverse proxies to web servers running on the virtuals. (The virtuals have to be NAT'ed, primarily because we don't have enough allocated public IP addresses.) The symptoms: Works fine most of the time. When someone tries to UPLOAD a large file to one virtuals, the internal network drops out ... for all virtuals: The Dom0 httpd sees a network timeout talking to the backend server on the virtual and reports a 502. A previously established ssh connection from Dom0 to any of the DomU's freezes. Our monitoring shows ping failures for traffic between virtuals. The Xen consoles to the DomU's do not freeze. No log messages in any log files that I can see, on either Dom0 or the DomU's ... apart from the Dom0 httpd logs. After a minute or so, the problem clears by itself. This is 100% reproducible. What we've tried: Downloading, building and installing the latest BNX2 driver on Dom0 Turning off MSI on the NIC - adding "options bnx2 disable_msi=1" to /etc/modprobe.conf Turning off tcp segmentation offload - "ethtool -K eth0 tso off". Sacrificing a black rooster at midnight. I've exhausted all my options apart from switching to KVM ... or slaughtering more roosters. Any suggestions?

  Hello everyone. I am designing a web application in ASP.NET / C# where each registered user has the ability to add/modify/delete rows based on their user-id. Take this example: I am going to edit my route on the page /route.aspx?routeid=854 which belongs to me (user-id: 1). But because I am a curious guy I try to access /route.aspx?routeid=855 which belongs to another user (user-id: 2). How can I best avoid people from accessing other peoples data? Should I send each user id (from session) with each database-call, should I validate user/password on every page load or what is the best and most secure approach? I hope I made this clear enough.

My id is generated using an UUID. an i want to retrieve this id, wich is given as a parameter to a mocked object. • Security in API authentication

  We are in the process of revamping our server side API, and we need to manage security. Our current model requires that a credentials object (containing user, password, and pin) be included in each method invocation. Our development team, however, has decided that we should have session objects instead (which is fine by me), but the new credentials are just a GUID. This is very different from what I've seen in other APIs in our industry, so I'm a bit concerned about how secure the new model will be. I asked them if they had analyzed both alternatives, and they said they haven't. Does anyone know if there're any clear advantages, disadvantages, risks, etc. of using a set of credentials versus just one element (complex as it may be)? PS: the communication channel would be secure in either case, and it's separate from this particular topic

  I just came from Simple Design and Testing Conference. In one of the session we were talking about evil keywords in programming languages. Corey Haines, who proposed the subject, was convinced that if statement is absolute evil. His alternative was to create functions with predicates. Can you please explain to me why if is evil. I understand that you can write very ugly code abusing if. But I don't believe that it's that bad.

• Embed remote desktop in browser

  I would like to embed a Remote Desktop session within my browser. I must use remote desktop because my clients can't install any additional software on the server. Here are some problems that I can already foresee: 1) I believe that I can embed an RDP ActiveX control, but then all I could support is IE. And even then, IE lockdown may forbid ActiveX controls. 2) I don't know anything about Apple computers, but I presume that they don't inherently run RDP? 3) I think there are ways to run RDP through a Java control. I don't have experience to know if this is a good or bad idea. I suppose that Java may even be disabled on some browsers, but don't know if this is a common case? So, what options have I got here to make this work reliably? I presume that I may need some default options (ie ActiveX), and then some fallback options (ie Java), and code to identify the correct option each time.

• PHP: passing GET between multiple pages

  I'm building a set of pages where I have a number of GET variables and it is often valuable to keep passing it along to the next page. This leads to ugly code where I have to have "if this $_GET variable is set, dynamically add it to this hyperlink". This is, in many senses, not a problem; but I had the thought "there must be a better way to do this", I mean after all basically all I want is to take the '?' and everything after it and append it to the links on that page, it would seem this should be rather simple (or at least possible to do in a for loop). I tried google searching but couldn't find anything, so I figured I'd see if any of you happen to know. Why not use SESSION? Because these pages need to be capable of being bookmarked. Thank you.

• How to generate a random alpha-numeric string in Java

  I've been looking for a simple java algorithm to generate a pseudo-random alpha-numeric string. In my situation it would be used as a unique session/key identifier that would "likely" be unique over 500K+ generation (my needs don't really require anything much more sophisticated) . Ideally I would be able to specify a length depending on my uniqueness needs. For example, a generated string of length 12 might look something like "AEYGF7K0DM1X". Answers: I like @Apocalisp and @erickson's answers equally well. The only downside to @Apocalisp's answer is it requires an apache class. Thanks to both for the help!

  Hi All, This is my first winform app in .NET... I have made a couple of ASP.NET app... In this app, I have some common variables, like current user name, his selected process etc.. etc.. This should be made accessible from all forms in the app at any time... How could I do this... Is there any place like "Session" in ASP.NET here... Further How do coders generally pass information from one form to another... Here I want to pass on the info I acquired in the first form to the subsequent forms... • Fedora 11 System - Failed Hard Drive Removed, and Boot gets GRUB Hard Disk Error

  Greetings, I have a machine with a 120GB ATA drive that has what I thought to be non-essential data on it. I also have a 320GB SATA hard drive with the OS/Application/Files (good data I want to keep). My 120GB ATA is failing I believe, as my computer kept slowing to a halt. However, when I move the drive from BIOS my computer will not start, says "GRUB Hard Disk Error". I know that my Fedora system has an LVM setup. I am looking to just remove the 120GB drive from "the mix", and just have one hard drive. How do I recover ? Thank you. I have access to a Linux Live CD right now and can make any changes. However, it won't boot into my OS - it fails. Host B has four NICs which are bonded using the balance-alb mode. Both hosts run RHEL 6.0, and both are on the same IPv4 subnet. Traffic analysis Host A is sending data to Host B using some SQL database application. Traffic from Host A to Host B: The source int/MAC is eth0/AA:AA:AA:AA:AA:AA, the destination int/MAC is eth5/B5:B5:B5:B5:B5:B5. Traffic from Host B to Host A: The source int/MAC is eth0/B0:B0:B0:B0:B0:B0, the destination int/MAC is eth0/AA:AA:AA:AA:AA:AA. Once the TCP connection has been established, Host B sends no further frames out eth5. The MAC address of eth5 expires from the bridge tables of both Switch 1 & Switch 2. Switch 1 continues to receive frames from Host A which are destined for B5:B5:B5:B5:B5:B5. Because Switch 1 and Switch 2 no longer have bridge table entries for B5:B5:B5:B5:B5:B5, they flood the frames out all ports on the same VLAN (except for the one it came in on, of course). Reproduce If you ping Host B from a workstation which is connected to either Switch 1 or 2, B5:B5:B5:B5:B5:B5 re-enters the bridge tables and the flooding stops. After five minutes (the default bridge table timeout), flooding resumes. Question It is clear that on Host B, frames arrive on eth5 and exit out eth0. This seems ok as that's what the Linux bonding algorithm is designed to do - balance incoming and outgoing traffic. But since the switch stops receiving frames with the source MAC of eth5, it gets timed out of the bridge table, resulting in flooding. Is this normal? Why aren't any more frames originating from eth5? Is it because there is simply no other traffic going on (the only connection is a single large data transfer from Host A)? I've researched this for a long time and haven't found an answer. Documentation states that no switch changes are necessary when using mode 6 of the Linux interface bonding (balance-alb). Is this behavior occurring because Host B doesn't send any further packets out of eth5, whereas in normal circumstances it's expected that it would? One solution is to setup a cron job which pings Host B to keep the bridge table entries from timing out, but that seems like a dirty hack.

  I have been doing some research lately about best approaches to authenticating web services calls (REST SOAP or whatever). But none of the Approaches convinced me... But i still can't a make a choise... Some talk about SSL and http basic authentication -login/password- which just seems weird for a machine (i mean having to assign a login/password to a machine, or is it not ?). Some others say API keys (seems like these scheme is more used for tracking and not realy for securing). Some say tokens (like session IDs) but shouldn't we stay stateless (especially if in REST style) ? In my use case, when a remote app is calling one of our web services, i have to authenticate the calling application obviously, and the call must - if applicable - tell me which user it impersonates so i can deal with authorization later. Any thoughts ?

I dont want to call the Twitter API while the tests run. Is there any Mocking Framework wich can do such things?

  The company I work for is looking to implement a caching solution. We have several WCF Web Services hosted and we need to cache certain values that can be persisted and fetched regardless of a client's session to a service. I am looking at the following technologies: Caching Application Block 4.1 WCF TCP Service using HttpRuntime Caching Memcached Win32 and Client Microsoft AppFabric Caching Beta 2 Our test server is a Windows Server 2003 with IIS6, but our production server is Windows Server 2008, so any of the above options would work (except for AppFabric Caching on our test server). Does anyone have any experience with any of these? This caching solution will not be used to store a lot of data, but it will need to be fetched from frequently and fast. Thanks in advance.

• Proxy Error 502 "Reason: Error reading from remote server" with Apache 2.2.3 (Debian) mod_proxy and Jetty 6.1.18

  Apache is receiving requests at port :80 and proxying them to Jetty at port :8080 The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server The proxy server could not handle the request GET /. My dilemma: Everything works fine normally (fast requests, few seconds or few tens of seconds long requests are processed ok). Problems occur when request processing takes long (few minutes?). If I issue request instead directly to Jetty at port :8080 the request is processed OK. So problem is likely to sit somewhere between Apache and Jetty where I am using mod_proxy. How to solve this? I have already tried some "tricks" related to KeepAlive settings, without luck.
