• High CPU usage with Team Speak 3.0.0-rc2

  The CPU usage is always around 40 percent. I use push-to-talk and I had uninstalled pulseaudio. Now I use Alsa. I don't even have to connect to a Server. By simply starting TS the cpu usage goes up 40 percent and stays there. The CPU usage of 3.0.0-rc1 [Build: 14468] is constantly 14 percent. UPDATE: Thanks to nickguletskii's link I googled for "alsa cpu usage" (without quotes) and it brought me to a forum. A user wrote that by directly selecting the hardware with "plughw:x.x" won't impact the performance of the system. I have selected it in the TS 3 configuration and it worked. But this solution is not optimal because now no other program can access the sound output. If you need any further information or my question is unclear than please tell me.

  I use Ubuntu 12.10 and I tried to follow this guide Install android sdk and eclipse in Ubuntu 12.04 but I keep getting this error: Error: The AVD manager normally uses the user's profile directory to store AVD files. However it failed to find the default profile directory. To fix this, please set the environment variable ANDROID_SDK_HOME to a valid path such as ¨~¨. Any ideas how can I fix this?

  I don't know about you, but for a long time I have used XCOPY statements in my Visual Studio post build events to copy my Umbraco files from the project folders to the local version of the website associated with the project.For the last few months we have been building a website framework for a client, who has subsequently sold the site to 5 clients, each with a different skin and some variations in their functional requirements.So, we now have a single source solutions, that builds and copies the site files into 5 seperate local websites, which enables us to easily test them all, what we had found was that this process was starting to slow up our build process and was reaching 30-45 seconds on a high spec Quad core machine (and slower on others)Today I asked Colin to create seperate Solution Configurations within Visual Studio so that while we were developing we could target a single site, and when we wanted to test all sites, we could target "ALL" and the Post Build script would then copy the files to all sites.This worked well, and with a couple of other optimisations, our build was now taking about 10 seconds for a single site.Then Colin came across ROBOCOPY and suggested that maybe this would be a suitable alternative to XCOPY, well, I had not heard of it.. (shock horror some of you shout, some I am sure like me, are also wondering what it is!)ROBOCOPY is new in Windows Vista & Windows 7 (you can also download it for XP & Windows 2003) and it has a lot of additional features, the two that were most interesting to us were:/MIR = Mirror a folder tree/XD = Exclude Directories/NP = No Progress (i.e. it does not give you a chart of it's results, which just fills up your Output window!)So, we set about implementing ROBOCOPY, we decided to use the /MIR switch on all folders that we knew were always stored in our project folders:- images- css- masterpages- xsltAnd for other files we just used the straight robocopy functionality.We also decided to exclude all the .SVN directories using the /XD switch and finally we added the /NP switch as mentioned above.The beauty of all of this, is the /MIR functionality, as this means that only files that have changed will be copied across which greatly speeds up the process, especially on the images folders which previously copied across on every build, now, if we add a new image to the project it will be copied across automatically and then never again, unless we change it of course!The build time now for all sites is approximately 4 seconds and for a single site, 2 seconds, I would highly recommend the time to make the same optimisations to your build processes if you have not done so already.

• What type of Multimeter is safe to use on computers?

  In "Upgrading and Repairing PC's - 18th edition" by Scott Mueller on pg. 1278 he discusses multimeters. "You should only use a DMM (digital multimeter) instead of the older needle-type multimeters because the older meters work by injecting 9V into the circuit when measuring resistance, which damages most computer circuits. A DMM uses a much smaller voltage (usually 1.5V) when making resistance measurements, which is safe for electronic equipment." Most DMM's that I've looked at have 9V batteries. Are they internally stepping down the voltage used when making these measurements? Wouldn't the concern of injecting 9V be true when measuring continuity as well? A little off topic, there is a fascinating way to test for laptop screen inverter failure, (http://www.fonerbooks.com/test.htm), is anyone aware of a safe DMM that is capable of this as well?

• JMeter Stress testing

  MAMP server hosting a Joomla instance. I'd like to hear the community's thoughts on the best way to stress test the server and find it's breaking point on concurrent users etc. Currently I have setup a test plan which I have going to the home page, grabbing the index.php, css, js and all images and have run tests on 1 to 100 users and a varying number of loops. What I'd like to know is how do I determine at what number of concurrent requests or looping requests is a good way to gauge if my server can handle the proposed increase in traffic? What is a good KB/sec, Throughput, Average, Max, Min via the Aggregate Report and at what number of threads/loops etc? I have googled and have not found immediate answers to these questions and thought to come here. More or less I have just used this http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/usermanual/jmeter_proxy_step_by_step.pdf to guide me and then I have been winging it in terms of Thread and Loop numbers. Any light shed on these subject would be much appreciated.

For example, this is a simple test.cmd file: java java This should cause Java to print its help message twice.   In a code review, what do you look for to assess a developer's expertise? Given an opportunity to look at a developer's work on a real-world project, what tell-tale signs are a tip-off to carelessness or lack of experience? Conversely, where do you look in the code to find evidence of a developer's skill or knowledge of best practices? For example, if I'm looking at a typical Rails app, I would be happy to see the developer is using RSpec (showing a commitment to using test-driven development and knowledge that RSpec is currently more popular than the default TestUnit). But in examining the specs for a Rails model, I see that the developer is testing associations, which might indicate a lack of real understanding of Rails testing requirements (since such tests are redundant given that they only test what's already implemented and tested in ActiveRecord). More generally, I might look to see if developers are writing their own implementations versus using widely available gems or if they are cleaning up code versus leaving lots of commented-out "leftovers." What helps you determine the skill of a Rails developer? What's your code quality checklist?

• OS X: Finder error -36 when using SMB shares on a Samba server bound to AD

  We're looking at deploying SMB homes on Debian (5.0.3) for our mac clients rather than purchasing four new Xserves. We've got our test servers built and functioning properly. Windows clients behave perfectly, but we've run into an issue with OS X (10.6.x and 10.5.x). We're going this route instead of Windows file servers due to a whole bunch of other issues that arise when going that way. Specifically, when mounting a SMB share with unix extensions switched on and the remote server bound to AD, the finder cannot save files on the share, instead touching the file and then bombing out with a -36 IO error, folder creation is fine. Copying files in the terminal behaves fine and the problem seems to be limited to the finder. The issue arises (I think) as the remote UID/GID is passed across when using unix extensions. OS X uses its own winbind idmap (odsam) to work out the effective UID/GID from AD users and groups whilst we're using a rid map on the server. Consequently, there is a mismatch in ownership which the finder chooses to honour. How OS X appears to handle this is to use the remote uid and gid at the file permission level (see below) and then set an OS X acl granting the local uid/gid to have the appropriate permissions on the file. I think the finder touches the file (which the kernel allows because of the ACL) and then checks the filesystem perms and drops out with the IO error. This works for most things but is causing a few apps that expect certain perms to break in subtle ways. Worst case scenario is that we'll continue running in this way but we would like to have the unix extensions on. Regards. • Do all Mac OS X applications require Admin permissions to 'install'?

  I'm new to the whole Mac OS X operating system. I'm trying to learn and I've got myself a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.7.3. I've created a test user that can not administrate so that I can test out permissions and I've found that I can not do anything in the Applications folder, which includes 'installing' applications (even those drag 'n' drop ones) and creating folders, without entering an Admin name and password. However, I was under the impression that this wasn't the case and you only needed Admin permissions to write to somewhere like Preferences, so can somebody please clarify why it is asking for Admin when I try to drag 'n' drop applications into the Applications folder.

• Solution 6 : Kill a Non-Clustered Process during Two-Node Cluster Failover

  Using Visual Studio 2008 and C#, I developed a windows service A and deployed it to two nodes of a windows server 2008 failover cluster. The service A is part of the failover cluster service, which means, when failover occurs at node1, the cluster service will failover the windows service A from node 1 to node 2. One of the tasks implemented by the windows service A is to start, monitor or kill a process B. The process B is installed to the two nodes but is not part of the failover cluster service. When a failover occurs at node1, the cluster service does not failover the process B from node 1 to node 2, and the process B continues running at node1. The requirement is: When failover occurs at node1, we want the process B running at node1 gets killed, but we do not want the process B be part of the failover cluster service. The first idea that pops up immediately is to put some code in an event handler triggered by the failover in the windows service A. The failover effect to the windows service A is similar to using the task manager to kill the process of the windows service A, but there is no event in windows service that can be triggered by killing the process of the window service. The events related to terminating a windows service are OnStop and OnShutDown, but killing the process of windows service A triggers neither of them. The OnStop event can only be triggered by stopping the windows service using Services Control Manager or Services Management Console. Apparently, the first idea is not feasible. The second idea that emerges is to put code into the OnStart event handler of the windows service A. When failover occurs at node 1, the windows service A is killed at node 1 and started at node 2. During the starting, the windows service A at node 2 kills the process B that is running at node 1. It is a workaround and works very well. The C# code implementation within the OnStart event handler is as following: 1.       Capture server names of the two nodes from App.config 2.       Determine server name of the remote node. 3.       Kill the process B running on the remote node. • Disable comments / Spam protection

  My client site is built in Silverstripe, there is a news page, and it allows people to leave comments. Unfortunately we've got loads of spam emails. I'm new to this, is there any way we can disable the comment field by default? How do I do it? Alternatively is there easy way for me to install a spam protection? Thanks heaps. • Install Oracle Drive and TNS for Windows XP?

  I am building a box with Windows XP with some applications. One application requires connection to an Oracle database on remote. I have installed OracleXEClient.exe from Oracle download. The installation does install "Oracle Provider for OLE DB" driver. My problem is that I still cannot make connections to the remote Oracle db. The test I have done is to create a UDL file with Oracle provider OLE DB connection. The error message is: --------------------------- Microsoft Data Link Error --------------------------- Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified I think I may miss TNSNAMEC.ora in the box. I can find this file from another box where Oracle connection works fine. I am not sure what package I should install (from Oracle) so that the default TNSNAEMES.ora will be installed with related files and setup path for accessing the TNS file?

  There was a spring in the step of some members of our development teams here at Red Gate, on hearing that on five gold awards at 2012′s SQL Mag Community and Editors Choice Awards. And why not? It’s a nice recognition that their efforts were appreciated by many in the SQL Server community. The team at Simple-Talk don’t tend to spring, but even we felt a twinge of pride in the fact that SQL Scripts Manager received Gold for Editor’s Choice in the Best Free Tools category.
