    The best intentions were having me at perhaps posting more than twice a month, and here we are and … well it has been busy. There has been a lot of SharePoint 2010 already in this first number of weeks of the year, a good amount of TFS 2010, but even better working quite actively on two topics that I enjoy quite a bit … Windows Azure and Application Lifecycle Management.  And there is more to come around those two. Through the influencers program with Geekswithblogs and Discountasp.net I got access to a hosted TFS solution that I am currently testing and will be posting my findings and documenting a good amount of information on that process. Another great resource has been fpweb.net, and there will be more details on this too.  Pretty exciting stuff! That is what is going on and what will be coming on here shortly.

    I have to select only unique records from an XML document, in the context of an <xsl:for-each> loop. As indicated above, each item contains other elements that we do not wish to include in the comparison. 'Uniqueness' should be a factor of those three elements, and those alone. I have attempted to accomplish this through the following: availList/item[not(schDate = preceding:: schDate and schFrmTime = preceding:: schFrmTime and schToTime = preceding:: schToTime)] The idea behind this is to select records where there is no preceding element with the same schDate, schFrmTime and schToTime. However, its output is missing the last item. This is because my XPath is actually excluding items where all of the child element values are matched within the entire preceding document. No single item matches all of the last item's child elements - but because each element's value is individually present in another item, the last item gets excluded. I could get the correct result by comparing all child values as a concatenated string to the same concatenated values for each preceding item. Does anybody know of a way I could do this?

  • Using Visual Studio 2008 to Assemble, Link, Debug, and Execute MASM 6.11 Assembly Code

    I would like to use Visual Studio 2008 to the greatest extent possible while effectively compiling/linking/building/etc code as if all these build processes were being done by the tools provided with MASM 6.11. The exact version of MASM does not matter, so long as it's within the 6.x range, as that is what my college is using to teach 16-bit assembly. I have done some research on the subject and have come to the conclusion that there are several options: Reconfigure VS to call the MASM 6.11 executables with the same flags, etc as MASM 6.11 would natively do. Create intermediary batch file(s) to be called by VS to then invoke the proper commands for MASM's linker, etc. Reconfigure VS's built-in build tools/rules (assembler, linker, etc) to provide an environment identical to the one used by MASM 6.11. Option (2) was brought up when I realized that the options available in VS's "External Tools" interface may be insufficient to correctly invoke MASM's build tools, thus a batch file to interpret VS's strict method of passing arguments might be helpful, as a lot of my learning about how to get this working involved my manually calling ML.exe, LINK.exe, etc from the command prompt. Below are several links that may prove useful in answering my question. Please keep in mind that I have read them all and none are the actual solution. I can only hope my specifying MASM 6.11 doesn't prevent anyone from contributing a perhaps more generalized answer.   • Drawing custom graphics on the iPhone: CALayer vs. CGContext

    Hi all, I have an application in which I'm doing some custom drawing, a bunch of lines on a gradient background, like so (ignore the text, they're just UILabels): At the moment, that's all done by starting a new CGContext, drawing stuff into it with CGContextDrawLinearGradient and CGContextStrokePath, then finally saving the resulting image with UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext. The positioning info is calculated while I'm laying out those labels, so it'd be a PITA (and duplication of effort) to calculate it all over again when the containing UIView is drawn with drawRect, so I'm drawing it ahead of time into a UIImage. All works fine, so far so good. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that it may be more efficient to use CALayers to do this drawing. My (cursory) understanding of the difference between the two approaches is that a CALayer is more like a bunch of instructions to draw stuff, and so takes up less memory until it's actually drawn onscreen, whereas drawing everything into a UIImage ahead of time means that you've got a sodding great bitmap kicking around in memory all the time, whether it's drawn or not. Is that a correct understanding? What is generally considered to be the best way of drawing custom images on the iPhone?

I just don't want to buy a bunch of domains and then later regret not changing the domain registrar when i registered them. I will also be using google app engine and i would like to ultimately have a subdomain configured to use amazon cloud front.

  • WPF Animation FPS vs. CPU usage - Am I expecting too much?

    Working on a screen saver for my wife, http://cchearts.codeplex.com/, and while I've been able to improve FPS on lower end machines (switch from Path to StreamGeometry, use DrawingVisual instead of UserControl, etc) the CPU usage still seems very high. Here's some numbers I ran from a few 5 minute sampling periods: ~60FPS 35% average CPU on Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.2GHz, 3GB ram, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M (128MB), Vista [My dev laptop] ~40FPS 50% average CPU on Pentium D @ 3.4GHz, 1.5GB ram, Standard VGA Graphics Adapter (unknown), 2003 Server [A crappy desktop] I can understand the lower frame rate and higher CPU usage on the crappy desktop but it still seems pretty high and 35% on my dev laptop seems high as well. I'd really like to analyze the application to get more details but I'm having issues there as well so I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong (never profiled WPF before). WPF Performance Suite: Process Launch Error Unable to attach to process: CCHearts.exe Do you want to kill it? This error message occurs when I click cancel after attempting launch. If I don't click cancel it sits there idle, I guess waiting to attach. Performance Explorer: Could not launch C:\Projects2\CC.Hearts\CC.Hearts\bin\Debug (USEVISUAL)\CCHearts.exe. Previous attempt to profile the application finished unsuccessfully. Please restart the application. Output Window from Performance: Profiling started. Profiling process ID 5360 (CCHearts). Process ID 5360 has exited. Data written to C:\Projects2\CC.Hearts\CCHearts100608.vsp. Profiling finished. PRF0025: No data was collected. Profiling complete. So I'm stuck wanting to improve performance but have no concrete way to determine where the bottleneck is. Have been relatively successful throwing darts at this point but I'm beyond that now :) PS: Screensaver is hosted at CodePlex if you want to look at the source and missed the link above. Edit: My RenderOptions darts... // NOTE: Grasping at straws here ;-) RenderOptions.SetBitmapScalingMode(newHeart, BitmapScalingMode.LowQuality); RenderOptions.SetCachingHint(newHeart, CachingHint.Cache); RenderOptions.SetEdgeMode(newHeart, EdgeMode.Aliased); I threw those a little while back and didn't see much difference (not sure if the bitmap scaling even comes into play). Really wish I could get profiling working to know where I should try to optimize. For now I assume there is some overhead in creating a new HeartVisual and the DrawingVisual contained inside. Maybe if I reset and reused the hearts (tossed them in a queue once they completed or something) I'd see an improvement. Shrug Throwing darts while blindfolder is always fun.

Both papers describe integer sorting algorithms that run in O(nloglog(n)) time. What is the difference between the two? Have there been any more recent findings about this topic?     This is a very strange one. I have an asp.net MVC 1 app. Under IIS6, with no anon access - only integrated windows auth - every thing works fine. When I look at the access logs, that's what I see, with one oddity - the js library is requested during the page first request, but not for any subsequent page requests. Log looks like: GET / 401 GET / 200 GET /Content/Site.css 304 GET /Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js 401 GET /Scripts/jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.min.js 401 GET /Scripts/jquery.tablesorter.min.js 401 GET /Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js 304 GET /Scripts/jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.min.js 304 GET /Scripts/jquery.tablesorter.min.js 304 GET /Content/Images/logo.jpg 401 GET /Content/Images/logo.jpg 304 GET /Foo 401 GET /Foo 200 POST /Foo/Delete 302 GET /Foo/List 200 POST /Foo/List 200 This corresponds to home page, click on "Foo", delete a record, click a checkbox (which causes the 2nd POST). Under IIS7.5, it sometimes fails - the click on the check box doesn't cause a postback, but there are no obvious reasons why. I've noticed under IIS7.5 that every single page request re-issues the requests for the js libraries - the first one a 401, followed by either a 200 (OK) or 304 (not modified), as opposed to the above log extract where that only happened during the 1st request. Is there any way to eliminate the 401 requests? Could a timing issue have something to do with the click being ignored? Would increasing the number of concurrent connections help? Any other ideas? I'm at a bit of a loss to explain this.
