• Why would I want to have a non-standard attribute?

  The documentation on Core Data entities says: You might implement a custom class, for example, to provide custom accessor or validation methods, to use non-standard attributes, to specify dependent keys, to calculate derived values, or to implement any other custom logic. I stumbled over the non-standard attributes claim. It's just a guess: If my attribute is anything other than NSString, NSNumber or NSDate I will want to have a non-standard Attribute with special setter and getter methods? So, for example, if I wanted to store an image, this would be a non-standard Attribute with type NSData and a special method, say -(void)setImageWithFileURL:(NSURL*)url which then pulls the image data from the file, puts in in an NSData and assigns it to core data? Or did I get that wrong?

• Is it bad practice to select upstream servers based upon the HTTP method?

  I'm wondering if it is bad practice to have a reverse proxy that selects the upstream server depending on the HTTP method used? The background is that I have an abitrary web server that handles POST requests with some logic behind. The same resources also contain static content, that can be retrieved using GET. After some benchmarking I realized that nginx would handle the static content way faster than my abitrary web server doing this. I checked the option to forward incoming requests internally using nginx, which is feasible. But this would lead to the fact that different servers would serve a distinct resource, only depending on issuing a GET or POST, including different header fields.

  I'm currently trying to write a stored procedure that can compute the biweekly periods when a date is passed in as a parameter. The business logic: the first Monday of the year is first day of the biweekly period. For example in 2010: period period_start period_end 1 2010-01-04 2010-01-17 2 2010-01-18 2010-01-31 3 2010-02-01 2010-02-14 .... 26 2010-12-20 2011-01-02 Passing today's date of 2010-12-31 will return 26, 2010-12-20 and 2011-01-02.   I am trying to learn Java. I would like to implement a simple networked connect 4 game as well as a chat feature. I want my network logic to be non blocking so after much study I found that SocketChannel is what I am after regrading my needs. What has not made sense still is the lack of CallBack functions in SocketChannels.. Like one finds in C#. My query for this time is: How do I deliver the data received to the Chat or Game form (JFrame)? Some guidance is most welcome.

• Which SharePoint Authentication Mode Should I be using for this scenario?

  I currently have a sharepoint 2010 site for which NTLM windows authentication has been enabled (by default it is against Active Directory I believe). I'd need to change this so that I have 1 custom login page which accepts username/password/domain and validates those information against the active directory, then if that was valid, I'll write logic to logon to another webservice which is located on another server and returns me a unique sessionId that I can store (as a cookie) for further use. Please could you advise which authentication mode I can use to create this custom login page? should that be FBA against AD? not sure how that works. Thanks in advance.

  Hi, We are planning to develop a client server application using C# and MySQL. We plan to sell the product on the shelf like any other software utility. We are worried about the decompilation of our product which does have some sort of edge over our competitors in terms of usability and bundled functionality. How can we prevent our software from decompilation, so the business logic of the product remains intact? We have heard about Reflector and other decompilers which makes our code very much vulnerable for copying. Our customer base is not Corporates by medical practitioners who themselves may not do it but our competitors may want to copy/disable licensing so value of our software goes down.   What is the best practice is in the case of altering the render order of elements on a webpage. For example, I have two DIVs that are to be displayed on a page: <div id="appleSection"> <!-- Apple DIVs, content, form elements, etc --> </div> <div id="orangeSection"> <!-- Orange DIVs, content, form elements, etc --> </div> Depending on user selection (perhaps by country or something), the order which the DIVs are presented to the user can differ. Certain conditions present appleSection above orangeSection, and for other conditions, their order is reversed. If the core logic of the page is the same regardless, is it a best practice to determine order on the server-side (perhaps via two pages that differ in the order of the DIVs), or is it more appropriate to have just a single page and use CSS to control whether appleSection is above orangeSection or vice versa?

  Please help me understand: print gettype(new CustomerObject()) prints: "object" (so it is an object) BUT print gettype((new CustomerObject())->get_customer()); prints: unexpected T_OBJECT_OPERATOR If I do it over two lines it works fine $object = new Customer($order->customer_id); print gettype($object); prints: object $customer = $object->get_customer(); print gettype($customer); prints: array It appears that the lines cannot be joined into a single call. Is this correct? and what is the logic behind that?

• PreparedStatement and 'null' value in WHERE clause

  I am using PrepareStatement and BatchUpdate for executimg a UPDATE query. In for loop I create a Batch. At end of loop I execute batch. Above logic works fine if SQL query used in PrepareStatement does not have null values in WHERE claues. Update Statement fails if there is null value in WHERE clasue. • Should Perl's opendir always return . and .. first?

  opendir MYDIR, "$dir"; my @FILES = readdir MYDIR; closedir MYDIR; It appears that 99.9 % of the time the first two entries in the array are always “.” and “..”. Later logic in the script has issues if it is not true. I ran into a case where the directory entries appeared later. Is this indicative of the file system being corrupt or something else? Is there a known order to what opendir returns?

  I have a query that is looking at a 'page_views' table. And I so far have the ability to get the total views by day. However, I am having an issue with getting unique views by day. The column I am testing against is user_id... Here's the query I have for total views. SELECT site_id, CONCAT(month(created_at) , '-', day(created_at), '-' , year(created_at)) as created_at_date, COUNT(*) as total_results FROM page_views GROUP BY day(created_at) I can't figure out the logic to just get the unique views, by day based on the user_id column though.

• Input Sanitation Best Practices

  Our team has recently been working on a logic and data layer for our database. We were not approved to utilize Entity or Linq to SQL for the data layer. It was primarily built by hand. A lot of the SQL is auto generated. An obvious down fall of this is the need to sanitize inputs prior to retrieval and insertion. What are the best methods for doing this? Searching for terms like insert, delete, etc seems like a poor way to accomplish this. Is there a better alternative?

I am trying to add a Silverlight control to my Existing ASP.NET project where i used to add reference to my Business Logic Project and access methods from My UI pages of ASP.NET Web application. Now I have added one Silverlight project to my solution. How can I use the already existing BL method which is in a C# class library ? When tried to add reference, it is saying that "You can only add project reference to other silver light projects in the solution". Should i give up ? Is there any way to get rid of this ?

• Unique number identifier generation

  I have to create logic for generation unique number identifier for records in database. id, generated in database is a separate column. At this moment, when user calls "create record" action, I save new record, get its database id, generate record number using this id, then put it to the edit form. Using this way means that all entity fields should be nullable to save record to database. I don't like this way. I know that should be better way. Is there a better practice to generate unique number identifier? What is possibility of generating non-unique random numbers? Thank you

  Hi, Could some one possibly clarify this for me. In the MVC paradigm, the idea is to keep the controller as thin as possible, it is also true that the model is the bit that communicates with data sources such as the database, XML-RPC etc and this is where the business logic should go. Is the POST and GET data a 'data source' and should that kind of data be handled by the model or should it be by the controller. I would normally call a method in the model and pass it the post data, the data would be quality checked by the controller and the model method would simply do the insertion or whatever. Should it be though that controller just calls the model method if a post has occured and it is responsible for sanity check, data checks etc.

• How does including a .csv work in an enum?

  enum ID // IDs { ID_HEADER = 0, // ID 0 = headers #include "DATA.CSV" ID_LIMIT }; I inherited some code here..... Looking at "DATA.CSV" I see all the ID's used to populate the enum in column B, along with other data. My question: How does the enum know that it is using "column B" to retrieve it's members? There must be some other logic in the application yet I don't see it. What else should I look for? Thanks.

• Best place/area to store file for Trail period

  I need to have a trial period (7 days) in my application. From this I came to know that you can do that by keeping permanent file, database or shared preference. Where do I keep that file so that the user isn't able to see/delete it. If I put that logic in Sharedpreference or a file with a path "data/data/packagename", when the application is uninstalled then all history will be lost. Any other workaround/ideas? Note: there is no server, application works locally with no Internet.

  this is might be really weird, but I have no idea what kinda wizardry of this. Basically, my Visual Studio stopped responding to my changes, it stopped building solution. I can comment code, which would completely ruin the logic of program, and Visual Studio will still run program that I guess it has in memory. It's really annoying, and I have no idea what it is. I keep restarting software, but it's still does the same. It's a licensed software. I was wondering If someone knew what was going on. Thanks!

• Creating WebService test harness

  Hello, I am trying to create a test harness for our QA staff to test our internal web services. I would like to create a web app that will allow them to enter a uri then submit. The web app will then interrogate the uri to get the appropriate parameters expected and returns with a generated input form. I know, this would be similar to SOAPUI and others. However, I feel it would be earier for them to be able to just use a form with entry fields and click a button to invoke the service and get the results back for display in the web app. In addition, I could create some custom logic that allows them to generate specific behavior they need. Has anybody done anything like this? I have searched and have found similar functionality but nothing close enough to help me. If you need more details please let me know.   I've written code to smooth an image using a 3x3 averaging filter, however the output is strange, it is almost all black.   We had a requirement to build a ASP.NET 3.5 web application using web forms, WCF, ADO.NET and SQL Server. The users would connect via Internet. Recently we understood that it is possible that users would often remain disconnected and would have Internet access intermittently. I need to understand if we can create occasionally connected web application using asp.net 3.5 - what all technologies/features we need to use? Is MS Sync Framework the answer to the problem - is it a viable option to use with web application? Is windows application the right approach instead of web applications - where the business logic would be run at the client itself, using local SQL Express editions with data then been synced up with Enterprise SQL server at server end when connection is established using replication and/or MS Sync framework. In that case is there a need to use WCF? Does Silverlight applications help in this context -building paritally connected web apps? Really appreciate if you can give pointers to how to go about this task of creating .net partially connected apps (not mobile apps)?
