• Ruby on Rails - Calendar Display

  We want to create a calendar view in a room scheduling application. The outcome we want is to have hours open (variable depending on day) across the top of the grid and the names of the rooms down the left side of the grid. The body would be populated with bookings for that day. The visual we're seeking is similar to the "Weekly Builder" plugin for Rails (http://dmix.ca/2009/06/weeklybuilder-a-weekly-calendar-plugin-for-rails/). We've tried using CSS to create variably-sized images, but this isn't working out. Are there any plugins available or other ways anyone can think of to accomplish this kind of visual? Thanks

• Simple Version Contol

  We work on a lot of small website projects. There are three of us in different physical locations. I would like a system that is very simple where the main concern is checking out and checking in web files (php, css, images, js) so that we don't accidentally overwrite each other's code. We also need a way to synch our local file systems with the files on the webserver and with each other. Rolling back to older versions is nice but features like branching and merging are not important. It seems like GIT may be overkill for our purpose or maybe not. Can you recommend anything?

• How to add space after elements added via jQuery

  I am rendering a similar construct to the below with some server side code. The server side code inserts hard returns in between the project label and text fields. Not a big deal except the below jQuery code inserts the project label and text fields mashed together. var projectLabel = $('<label for="project">Project</label>'); var projectField = $('<input type="text" name="project" id="projectName" />'); projectLabel.insertBefore($(this)); projectField.insertBefore($(this)); Because of this discrepancy the elements rendered server side have a space between them while the ones rendered on the client do not. I've tried adding a nbsp; at the end of each line to no avail. Unfortunately, I have been unable to remove the hard returns outputted by the server side code. Further because of the space I can't fix this with CSS. What are my options for adding spacing via jQuery?

• Any advantage to using SVG font in @font-face instead of TTF/EOT?

  I am investigating the usage of SVG fonts in @font-face declaration. So far, only Safari 4 and Opera 10 seem to support it (see an example for test [1]). Firefox 3.5 does not support it but there is a bug report [2] but no fix has been supplied yet (though there are patches). I also came across this discussion[3] which tangentially talks about advantages/disadvantages of SVG fonts. I am wondering, with @font-face support in major browsers, what is the advantage of using SVG font format in lieu of TTF/OTF/EOT formats? The only advantage I can glean from the discussion linked above was that you can add your own missing gylphs to fonts that do not support them yet. I've recently started learning web programming. I really like SVG + CSS, and was wondering -- why do people not design entire webpages in SVG? Context SVG provides beautiful primitive: quadratic + cubic bezier curves; lines + filling -- all as vector graphics SVG provides text SVG provides affine transformations Questions Are there examples of people designing entire websites as a giant SVG file? If not, what the limitations? Are there performance hits when using SVG primitives as opposed to divs/tables?

• Can I run multiple websites under a single membership database?

  Hi all, I'm trying to plan a series of websites that all share many of the resources such as css/jscript/images/content etc. For this reason I wanted to run all of the websites under the same application and IIS profile, but depending on the URL being used change the masterpage and theme/skin. The ASP.NET membership database seems as if it was designed with this goal in mind because it allows you to setup multiple applications, however I believe the purpose for which this was built was to allow applications to be run under virtual directories/fodlers, not on seperate urls. • Binding Click event in KnockoutJS

  I have a which has a css binding according to the value of 'rowState' as follows which is working fine. Now, I need to bind the 'click' event to fire only if the rowState is not 2. I tried the following, but with no success. I do not want to use the if statement as the div has got lots of content which I would need to repeat. The only difference is to make the div not clickable if rowState is 2. Could you please help me to sort this out?

  Actually I have a domain - domainone.com I have created a subdomain cname of anoter domain as abc.domaintwo.com - CNAME as - domainone.com so that I can use the js and css files e.g domainone.com/js/jquery.js files as abc.domaintwo.com/js/jquery.js SO Far everything is FINE, no issues at all. Problem: I have a custom 404 page for domainone.com and now when that abc.domaintwo.com goes 404 same page appears which i don't want. Any help is appreciated. Htaccess of domainone.com: ErrorDocument 404 /404/ All i want is to have different 404 for both..... Notes: Don't have access to shell for symlinks or alias as I am on shared hosting.

• IE6 and IE7 Standalone: Prove they're not the real thing

  It's common knowledge on SO (see this question) that to run IE6 and IE7 you need a Windows box (or virtual box) with only those apps installed. I doubt this is true (they are the real versions, I think). The two browsers I'm interested in are: Standalone IE6 from the MultipleIEs install Standalone IE7 also from Tredosoft (but published elsewhere) These two plus a "real" install of IE8 give you three IE versions in one Windows install. While we all know that "You're out of luck if you're trying to run them all reliably in one VM," but can someone please show me JS, CSS, or HTML (or a plugin, etc.) that does not work on the standalone versions as it should?

My problem is with the always-updating resource collection and with the building times, as in a time is set when the building, ship, research, and etc completes building and updates the user's profile even if the user is offline. What and/or where should I learn to make this? Should it be a constantly running script in the background Note that I wish to only use PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Mysql but will learn something new if needed. Cron jobs or the Windows equivalent seem to be the way, but it doesn't seem right or best to me.c

• Looking for a specific kind of WEB framework, no malarkey please

  We do maintenence on a number of systems. I'm finally in a place where I'm teh fucking boss for once, and have to design a large system that will have a long maintenance contract. There's a couple of tasks I find myself always repeating: 1) similar tasks for users with JS and those without 2) similar things for contents and rss/atom feeds, etc. To combat these I will need appropriate handling of assets (think JS files, CSS, themes/templates, etc.), excellent auth/user systems, javascript/ajax forethought, appropriate model setups. Codeigniter fails on many of these. Basically, with enough time I could build this system with Zend, but I'm curious what else is out there as Zend is also kind of a heavy-weight. We need something that is Rapid but maintainable, CodeIgniter is not maintainable. We will have a lot of AJAX APIs in place for the design team to play with. At first I thought jQuery was cool, but now I'm looking at Dojo.

• .htaccess redirect question

  I have a slight problem with .htaccess redirect. I have a dynamic site with 2 levels of variables - content="type -(alpha)" and ID="number" but this is very not seo friendly what I really would like to create is a rewrite rule that generates a "friendly" url for serach engines & users alike. Very much like WordPress does. Each ID is already unique (obviously) and on creation is creating a unique "permalink" field so for example ID=1 has a "permalink field" as "2009/10/27/page title" and ID=100 would be "2010/10/27 page title". I would like folder/wall.php?content=type&ID=number to redirect to folder/permalink.php/html/htm (don't mind a non dynamic extension) Any clues? - this is not right (I know) but it also "breaks" my css file RewriteEngine On RewriteRule wall/content/(.*)/ID/(.*)/ wall.php?content=$1&ID=$2 RewriteRule wall/content/(.*)/ID/(.*) wall.php?content=$1&ID=$2

• Nivo Slider thumbnails not displaying properly in IE

  Making a new site but something is happening to it in IE. I've purchased the Nivo Slider for wordpress plugin and it working fine however it's not displaying the thumbnails under the banner in IE. This is what it looks like in firefox This is what it looks like in IE Because this is a plugin (and the website isn't giving me any support after 2 days) I dont really have the source CSS but I was hoping you could take a look at it with come developer tools to see why it might not be showing in IE? • h3 tag text/image replacement, does this hurt seo?

  I'm trying to "replace" text with an image in all of my h3 tags. I want the image to be in the html to avoid multiple h3 classes as this is being done for a portfolio and there will be about 10 h3 tags on the page. My question is, will this be viewed as an attempt to hide, stuff keywords by google for seo purposes? If it will then does anyone know a better way to accomplish this? • NavigateUrl="#" becomes href="SubFolder/#"??

  This isn't exactly Fermat's last theorem, but it keeps coming back to annoy me like an unpaid phone bill from college. Sometimes I want to create a HyperLink that does not cause a postback, so I want the target url to be #. When the markup happens to be from a UserControl in a subfolder, / |- Home.aspx (uses UC.ascx) |- Sub |- UC.ascx the URL is rewritten with a relative path, e.g. <asp:HyperLink runat="server" NavigateUrl="#" >Click Me!</asp:HyperLink> becomes <a href="SubFolder/#">Click Me!</a> Which is, unfortunately, wrong. Obviously I can get around this by not using a server control, but it seems stupid. Can this be avoided? The point here is I will add a click event with jQuery or in code-behind, and I never want it to cause a postback, but I want it to be a hyperlink for CSS reasons.

I want to avoid using cache because for this to work it must first load all the content. I was searching online for possible solution. • Is there an easy way to add a secure file upload form (username, password, select file) to a website

Have an architect who wants his clients to enable his clients to upload (ftp - but don't know if http could be a better alternative?) files (plans etc.) to him, through the website I'm designing for him. I have seen similar things available on printers websites... I have seen uploadify, but it requires flash (I can only code HTML, CSS and a tiny bit of PHP), and don't think it is a secure option. I have also seen net2ftp, but don't really understand how it works. Any direction would be sincerely appreciated.

If I want to rewrite some files (for example public/styles.css) I must simply create it in my app (the_app). If I want new functions in my app I can create a plugin. • How do I submit a form from another page?

  I have a two page site. Each page contains a header with "tabs" at the top, to navigate between page 1 and 2. When a tab is selected, I need the selected page to re-POST to the server, to quickly refresh before it is displayed. I have a form on each page that allows a manual refresh from that page but need to submit that form from the other page. For example, page 2 is displayed. The tab for page 1 is selected (which is on page 2) It should then submit the refresh form on page 1. Any help is appreciated. (Using jQuery, js, html and CSS)
