  Hi, I've seen lot of code that handle forms, which creates input fields with names containing square brackets. I understand that this is being somehow converted to PHP arrays when a PHP script examines the $_POST variable. My questions about this: What is the mechanism behind? At which point this names that merely contain brackets are converted to arrays? Is this a feature of the HTPP protocol? Of web servers? Of the PHP language? Continuing the previous question, is this a commonly used hack or a normal programming tool? What are (all) the rules of using brackets in input field names? • Will lock() statement block all threads in the proccess/appdomain?

  Maybe the question sounds silly, but I don't understand 'something about threads and locking and I would like to get a confirmation (here's why I ask). So, if I have 10 servers and 10 request in the same time come to each server, that's 100 request across the farm. Without locking, thats 100 request to the database. If I do something like this: private static readonly object myLockHolder = new object(); if (Cache[key] == null) { lock(myLockHolder) { if (Cache[key] == null) { Cache[key] = LengthyDatabaseCall(); } } } How many database requests will I do? 10? 100? Or as much as I have threads?

• ASP.NET ~ remotely invoking an ASP.NET page

  I have two servers running IIS, say, Server-A and Server-B. Server-A is in the DMZ, visible to all users; Server-B is not in the DMZ. I need to provide a way for users to invoke a page on Server-A which will in turn remotely request a page on Server-B, transparently to the user. In other words, Server-A needs to do this on behalf of the user because the user does not have visibility to Server-B. Is this possible and if so, what is the best method to do this?

  My search server 2008 express crawls 3 sharepoint servers and 1 windows file server. The file server and 2 other sharepoint server crawl all content and master and sub sites just fine. On the 3rd sharepoint server the default site crawl just fine...The second web application site (content database) crawls the top site and crawls all sub sites BUT The subsites get the below error in the crawl log. Deleted by the gatherer (The start address or content source that contained this item was deleted and hence this item was deleted.) I have checked the security rights (OK) I have checked the setting to crawl a SharePoint site (if wrong the top site would not work)... ???? Last part = I can crawl 3 other sharepoint sites (web applications/other content databases) on the same server...It seems to be just this one site...

• How do I make use of multiple cores in Large SQL Server Queries?

  I have two SQL Servers, one for production, and one as an archive. Every night, we've got a SQL job that runs and copies the days production data over to the archive. As we've grown, this process takes longer and longer and longer. When I watch the utilization on the archive server running the archival process, I see that it only ever makes use of a single core. And since this box has eight cores, this is a huge waste of resources. The job runs at 3AM, so it's free to take any and all resources it can find. So what I need to do if figure out how to structure SQL Server jobs so they can take advantage of multiple cores, but I can't find any literature on tackling this problem. We're running SQL Server 2005, but I could certainly push for an upgrade if 2008 takes of this problem.

• Return segmented average from SQL Query?

  Hi, I measure the load on DNS servers every minute and store that into an SQL DB. I want to draw a chart of the load for the last 48 hours. That's 69120 (48*24*60) data points but my chart's only 800 pixels wide so to make things faster I would like my SQL query to return only ~800 data points. It's seems to me like a pretty standard thing to do, but I've been searching the web and in books for such a thing for a while now and the closest I was able to find was a rolling average. What I'm looking for a more of a "segmented average": divide the 69120 data points in ~800 segments, then average each segment. My SQL table is: CREATE TABLE measurements ( ip int, measurement_time int, queries int, query_time float ) My query looks like this SELECT ip, queries FROM measurements WHERE measurement_time>(time()-172800) Thanks a lot!

• send() always interrupted by EPIPE

  I've this weird behaviour in a multithreaded server programmed in C under GNU/Linux. While it's sending data, eventually will be interrupted by SIGPIPE. I managed to ignore signals in send() and treat errno after each action because of it. So, it has two individual sending methods, one that sends a large amount of data at once (or at least tries to), and another that sends a nearly similar amount and slices it in little chunks. Finally, I tried with this to keep it sending data. do { total_bytes_sent += send(client_sd, output_buf + total_bytes_sent, output_buf_len - total_bytes_sent, MSG_NOSIGNAL); } while ((total_bytes_sent < output_buf_len) && (errno != EPIPE)); This ugly piece of code does its work in certain situations, but not always. I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware or ISP problem, as this server is running in six european servers, four in Germany and two in France. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Controlling new features in Spring/Apache tomcat

  Is there a good way to manage roll out of new software in Spring/Tomcat configuration. The problem I am trying to address is being able to rollback newly deployed software provided there are no hard dependencies on other moving pieces. For example changed the guts of an algorithm and now want to deploy the new software with the new change off by default and then turning it on on one of the web servers. An obvious way is to build a session object which has a map of key-value pairs(property,bool) which is populated from a db on a session startup and then the value is persisted for that session. This is so that if the value is reverted back existing sessions which started with the original value retain the original value and giving application consistency. Is there a more obvious inbuilt mechanism to do this?

• Viewstate seems to be hijacked inadvertently

  Hi, we are using asp.net 2.x, we use session state stored in sql server, 2 web servers in loadbalance, iis6. our issue is that in the last 3 months we have had 2 cases where some one using our enquiry form has seen someone else's info e.g. first name and last name. We are not populating the form from objects in session so I have come to the conclusion that the second user has somehow received the viewstate from the first user, after that user has tried to submit and got an error e.g. has posted view state and returned the the same page and the other user has requested that page at the same time (must have been on the same server I am guessing if it is a viewstate issue). have any of you experienced this before? some questions mulling around in my head is how does the worker process know to retun view state to a unique request and how does it determine a unique request etc..

  This question asks about file name the servers sends and the fix was quite simply a content-disposition header in the http response. What I interested in is does anyone know of any way to do this from the client side if the file name is already known? Is there any special javascript to do this for example? A site I have to use but not mine has a FileDownload.aspx but it doesn't send the content-disposition header. I know the filename and would like to be able to create a firefox extensions to use for the poorly coded web site. Thanks

• PHP CURL works fine from localhost not from server

  I have 2 servers, srv1 and srv2. All client sites are stored in srv2 and all authentication details are stored in srv1. Each time a client site is loaded, the site in srv2 sends a curl request to srv1 to validate. I am always getting bool(false) when I print the curl response using var_dump. But if I am requesting for validation from my local wamp installation(localhost) it is perfectly returning the response. According to my understanding srv2 is blocking srv1 ip or something like that. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. The solution is really urgent as all my clients are stuck with invalid authorization message. Edit: Now when i tested curl in srv2 is working fine i think. Because I am able to fetch other websites without any trouble. But I am not able to fetch data from srv1. I can view a page from srv1 through browser url but not through curl.

  I have had a site up and running for quite a while, but I've just started getting the MAC failed error. Quite often too. While coding tonight I've noticed it 4 times or so. The host (through someone else) changed servers and we've had a bunch of issues. This started happening since then. What are all the possibilities that it could be on the server end that I could ask? For example, Gmail appears to ignore the DELE (delete) command from a POP3 client. Instead, it implements its own delete and archive strategy. The purpose of preparing a list is to avoid developers testing a POP3 client against the Gmail POP3 server and then assuming that all POP3 servers behave in the same way.   My app reads a from decentralized (so I have the ability to change servers if I have to) xml file with TBXML parser. The xml file consists of only a few lines like this <xml> <mirror url="http://www.someserverabc.com/data.xml" priority="1"/> <mirror url="http://www.someservermirror.com/data.xml" priority="2"/> <mirror url="http://www.anotherserver.com/data.xml/" priority="3"/> </xml> So I have the corresponding priority to the url. Now I want to check if server with priority 1 is reachable, and if not, try the 2nd one and so forth. If a server is reachable I'm parsing XML with the url from the mirror list How could I implement this approach and is it even a good approach or how can this be tweaked? (is XML even desirable in the first scenario)

  Hello, I am currently running a few perl and python scripts on a windows pc and would like to port over to the Amazon EC2 servers running 64-bit LINUX. The scripts are basic web scrapers that go to a variety of websites, get data and then save daily as csv files. I would like to install these in the cloud and get them running in an automated way so that they will run without my intervention. Also given that I don't want to lose all the data if the instance crashes, I should also upload the csv files to Amazon S3. Any idea how I can do this? • Is an iPhone Call Recorder theoretically possible?

  NOTE: I know neither the iPhone SDK or Objective C, just wondering if possible. I know obviously it would have to be on a Jailbroken device anyway, but it is technically possible for a iPhone call recording application to be made, or is it not possible to hook into the calls or the audio input/output? I know obviously there would be no 'official' way of doing it and certainly not from an App Store application. And I know there are call recording apps which place outgoing calls through their own servers. Just wondering if the reason it doesn't exist yet is just because no-one has coded it or if it's not actually possible?

  My company has just migrated all the code for our website to 3 identical servers on an off-site location. Now it is our job to test them. However, the amount of websites/functionality that we have to test is exorbitant, and multiply that times 3! To check every single link and every single function is a daunting task. We are in the process of manually doing that right now. My question to you guys/girls is this... One application in .asp and second application in java. we want to build interface for universal authentication, so that one can access the other application once signed into one application. Both applications are using SQL database, but one is written in .ASP hosted on Windows server while the other is in JAVA hosted on a Linux server. The applications are currently resided on two different servers. requirements: 1)The end user are most likely to access the applications through .ASP first, then reach the 2nd application more like "back office" management system. 2)he JAVA application currently works well with IE web browser, but not very smooth with other browsers such as Firefox. • How to correctly configure server for Symfony (on shared hosting)?

  Hi! I've decided to learn Symfony and right now I am reading through the very start of the "Practical Symfony" book. After reading the "Web Server Configuration" part I have a question. The manual is describing how to correctly configure the server: browser should have access only to web/ and sf/.../ directories. The manual has great instructions regarding this and being a Linux user I had no problem following them and making everything work on my local machine. However that involves editing VirtualHost entries which normally is not easy to do on common shared hosting servers. So I wonder what is the common technique that Symfony developers use to get the same results in shared hosting environment? I think I can do that by adding "deny from all" in the root and then overwriting that rule in the allowed directories. However I am not sure if that's the easiest way and the way that is normally used.

• What can cause reset connection when running PHP script?

  I've developed a web application with CodeIgniter that works perfectly on my local machines (one with windows and one with Linux). When I moved it to my hosting server, connection gets reset when running one particular PHP script that does a few MySQL queries and some operations on arrays. The data I'm querying is small, just a few tables with up to 25 records. Firefox returns "The connection was reset" after maybe 2-3 seconds. I checked the servers error logs but there was nothing there. Unfortunately I don't have access to Apache error logs. What can cause this behavior?
