• I'm Sick of Web Development - What avenues are open to me ...?

  I've been working as a web developer since 1998, mostly with ASP/ASP.Net/C# but began as a Java coder (JSP mostly). Its been fun but now I'm feeling jaded and can see the need for a change. I've considered iOS/Cocoa development and Android development recently (Objective-C looks hard while I'm a former Java developer) but I'm not sure of Career opportunities being proficient in either would afford The incline of the learning curve - I just turned 40 and I know I'm not as sharp or as quick as I once was. Does anyone have any experiences/ opinions/ advice for me? Thanks.

• Strategy to keep track of stored files in the documents directory?

  In my app, the user can save his input to disk. This is done with NSKeyedArchiver. Currently I simply name my files with a timestamp. But of course, the user may want to load one of them back in to keep on editing them. What would be the most reliable / safe strategy to keep track of those files? I need to present the user a list of those files, so that he can choose one to open. Currently I think of making an archived NSMutableArray which simply stores the file names, but I feel that this strategy is not really good. We all know when we save files sometimes something goes wrong, and this seems very likely to get currupted easily, or not? How would you do it?

Either based no the OS developer specification, or because it is common usage if there is no recommandation. Please provide one answer per platform, with different directories. Also, example of how to get the directory location in C++ or C is best, as it's the language you'll have more hard time. Locations: Player's game data (saved games, config).   I've currently graduated from my first run at higher education, landed my first full-time gig as a web application developer, and absolutely love it. My question is that in looking for jobs I ran across many jobs that require a certain level of experience and code examples. Much of the work I am doing is both protected by a login, and closed source. How does someone, that is just starting out and needs to be building a resume, go about preparing for the next job. (no matter how much i love my current job, i feel like it's only responsible to always be preparing)

• IWebBrowser2: how to force links to open in new window?

  The MSDN documentation on WebBrowser Customization explains how to prevent new windows from being opened and how to cancel navigation. In my case, my application is hosting an IWebBrowser2 but I don't want the user to navigate to new pages within my app. Instead, I'd like to open all links in a new IE window. The desired behavior is: user clicks a link, and a new window opens with that URL. A similar question was asked and answered here and rather than pollute that answered post, it was suggested I open a new discussion. The members on the related post suggested I should be able to do this by trapping DISPID_BEFORENAVIGATE2, setting the cancel flag, and writing code to open a new window, but I've found out that the browser control gets lots of BeforeNavigate2 events that seem to be initiated by scripts on the main page. For example, amazon.com fires BeforeNavigate2 events like crazy, and they are not a result of link invocation. Replies appreciated!

  I know that on Windows it's quite futile to try to backup the "C:" partition file-wise and that's why a full partition backup is needed. Is it OK to backup a the root Linux partition file-wise? Are there any downsides? Clarification Here, I don't care about advantages of partial backups. I'm going to do additional separate backups of /home, etc. What I'm interested in here is the comparison of backup of all files from / vs. backup of the whole partition as device What are the advantages of something like dd if=/dev/sda1 ...?

• How do you fix "Too many open files" problem in Hudson?

  We use Hudson as a continuous integration system to execute automated builds (nightly and based on CVS polling) of a lot of our projects. Some projects poll CVS every 15 minutes, some others poll every 5 minutes and some poll every hour. Every few weeks we'll get a build that fails with the following output: FATAL: java.io.IOException: Too many open files java.io.IOException: java.io.IOException: Too many open files at java.lang.UNIXProcess.<init>(UNIXProcess.java:148) The next build always worked (with 0 changes) so we always chalked it up to 2 build jobs being run at the same time and happening to have too many files open during the process. This weekend we had a build fail Friday night (automatic nightly build) with the message and every other nightly build also failed. Somehow this triggered Hudson to continuously build every project which failed until the issue was resolved. This resulted in a build every 30 minutes or so of every project until sometime Saturday night when the issue magically disappeared.

• Known problems with filemtime() on Windows - files getting touched arbitrarily?

  Is there a known issue leading to file modification times of cache files on Windows XP SP 3 getting arbitrarily updated, but without any actual change? Is there some service on a standard Windows XP - Backup, Sync, Versioning, Virus scanner - known to touch files? They all have a .txt extension. If there isn't, forget it. Then I'm getting something wrong in my cache routines, and I'll debug my way through. Background: I'm building a simple caching wrapper around a slow web site on a Windows server. I am comparing the filemtime() time stamp to some columns in the data base to determine whether a cached file is stale. I'm having problems using this method because the modification time of the cache files seems to get updated in between operations without me doing anything. THis results in stale files being displayed. I'm the only user on the machine. The operating system is Windows XP, the webserver a XAMPP Apache 2 with PHP 5.2

• Path Environmental Variable errors

  So, I am trying to learn java. I installed the JDK and proceeded to write a few programs. Each time, I have to give the path to javac.exe to compile the .java file. SO, I decided to tweak the %PATH% variable. And no matter what I change it to, it doesn't work. when I do an echo %PATH%, I get 'Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.   This is the message I get when I try to rip a cd from any player. I usually use the stock Rhythmbox but have tried others to no avail. I have just updated to 12.10 from 12.04 and I had no problems in 12.04. I have read the other posts and have switched to the Main Server in the Software Sources menu. I have installed Ubuntu Restricted Extras. Nothing seems to help. I would appreciate any help.   What is the best and most safest way to handle PHP sessions. Is the best way to store sessions in: Database (more reliable, but high bottleneck, slow speed, not good for high database usage websites)? Memcache (super fast, but distributed more security problems, chances of loosing data when the server restarted and chances of loosing data when the cache is full)? Files (default option, I guess slow since it reads and writes from file I/O, less security, etc). Which method is the best? What are the problems and good things of each of those approaches?

  Several days ago I heard a sentence "Cracking company name routers are not a crime.". I asked "Why?" and the guy explained to me that company name used a linux distribution on their routers which source can not be closed because of their license but company name closed it. What do you think about this? Doing otherwise unethical "cracking" becomes ethical, or somewhat neutral if the software in question is "cracked" too? By "cracking" I don't mean breaking into a computer through someones' company name router but "cracking" my own router's OS which otherwise would be unethical.
