  http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlparametercollection.addwithvalue.aspx I'm used to adding sql parameters to a sqlCommand using the add() function. This allows me to specify the type of the sqlParameter, but it requires another line to set the value. It's nice to use the AddWithValue function, but it skips the "specify the parameter type" step. I'm guessing this causes the parameters to be sent over as strings contained within single quotes (''), but I'm not sure. Is this the case, and does this cause significantly slower performance of the stored procedures? Note: I understand that it is nice to validate user data on the .NET side of things by specifying the data type for params -- I'm only concerned about reflection-type overhead of AddWithValue either on the .NET or SQL side.

• Using PDF in iPad

  Has Anyone tried using PDF in iPad Application, using CGPDf functions. I have used this in iPhone and it works perfectly , but when i use the same code in iPad , the Page are Shrunk in size, after a try outs i set the Scale as follows CGContextScaleCTM(context,1.85, -1.80); This time the it fits the screen perfectly , but that was just a trial and error , why does it not fit the screen as in iPhone, i have set the view size correctly too. • How to structure VB.NET windows forms applications

  What is the best way to structure a VB.NET windows forms application so that code can be reused and the app can be extended easily. I used to create lots of new forms. This lead to lots of repeated code and forms which did similar things. Now, for forms which do similar jobs, such as view/edit/delete items from a specific db table, I create a form with the required controls, have the form create an instance of a class with params such as a collection of the controls and a string containing the db table name. Then the individual controls call functions of the class. Advanced forms will inherit and extend this basic form class. 1) Has there already been work done in this area? 2) Are there books / articles available which discuss the options available on this topic? • OpenLDAP and user role based accedss controll (RBAC)

  Hello, my company uses an openldap server which stores corporate user information ((username,passwd and some other information like email are stored in ldap).. Till now they only use it for authentication but now we'd like to use for authentication also, this means that we'll create roles (as ldap attributes in a new schema) and assign those roles in the users. My actual question is if there is a best-practice to follow for using openldap for authentication on many applications (most written in php). I understand how to make roles and assign them to users for just one application, but what about the others (each application of course has its own roles). Should I just create an ou=appName,ou=roles,dc=mycompany for each application, put the roles as attributes there and just add each role as an attribute of the user object ? is there any other recommendations ? thanks

• Scheme: Detecting duplicate elements in a list

  Does R6RS or Chez Scheme v7.9.4 have a library function to check if a list contains duplicate elements? Alternatively, do either have any built in functionality for sets (which dis-allow duplicate elements)? So far, I've only been able to find an example here. The problem with that is that it doesn't appear to actually be part of the Chez Scheme library. Although I could write my own version of this, I'd much rather use a well known, tested, and maintained library function - especially given how basic an operation this is. So a simple "use these built-in functions" or a "no built-in library implements this" will suffice. Thanks!

• Why does this call to jQuery's $.ajax() fire an empty request in Chrome and Firefox?

  Hello, I am trying to call a WCF RESTful service from jQuery. I am using JSON to encode both request and response.   Here's a very simple example of what I'm trying to get around: class Test(object): some_dict = {Test: True} The problem is that I cannot refer to Test while it's still being defined Normally, I'd just do this: class Test(object): def __init__(self): self.__class__.some_dict = {Test: True} But I never create an instance of this class. It's really just a container to hold a group of related functions and data (I have several of these classes, and I pass around references to them, so it is necessary for Test to be it's own class) So my question is, how could I refer to Test while it's being defined, or is there something similar to __init__ that get's called as soon as the class is defined? If possible, I want self.some_dict = {Test: True} to remain inside the class definition. This is the only way I know how to do this so far: class Test(object): @classmethod def class_init(cls): cls.some_dict = {Test: True} Test.class_init()

• Ext JS how to tell PagingToolbar to use parent Grid storage?

  I'm trying to build application that use single config passed by server as non native JSON (can contain functions). Everything works fine so far but I'm curious why PagingToolbar does not have an option to use parent Grid store? I have tried to set store in my config like this, but without success: {... store:Ext.StoreMgr.lookup('unique_store_id') } Is there any way to do so without writing tons of javascript for each view defining store, grid and other items in my application or at least extend functionality of PaginationToolbar that use options from parent object? • reporting services: use a custom assembly with a local (RDLC) report

  Hello: I am designing a report that will be used in local mode (an RDLC file) in a Winform app. I have a custom assembly with a static class that has some functions that I want to use inside of the report (as expressions). I have found all sorts of help for doing this with RDL reports, but I'm running into a permissions problem with my RDLC report. I get the following error at runtime: "The report references the code module (my module), which is not a trusted assembly". I know that this is some kind of a code security issue, but I'm not sure what to do to fix it. The documentation that I have seen online is aimed at RDL reports, and it instructs me to edit a SQL Server-specific policy file. I'm using RDLC, so there is no sql server involved. What do I need to do to acquire the appropriate permissions?

• Accessing one process's memory contents from another module

  I am developing a virtual device driver such that the user can write to the driver a process' pid and a virtual address, and the module will use these two values to get the memory contents of the target process. I am wondering if there is any easy functions that can fetch user page's data at this virtual address. I have tried get_user but this is not possible because the modules executing get_user at another process's context. I also tried to use ptrace_readdata, however, it seems that the file at /kernel/ptrace.c leaves a function access_process_vm undefined and also I don't know how to compile the source code of my module with this file (the linker seaches file in /linux/include by default). I am wondering if there are any other solutions...

Let's say I have 50 Bubble sprites and each circle's radius should be updated with a mathematical formula. How do I organize this logic? How do I update all Bubble sprites within the BubbleContainer? • SQL Split function that handles string with delimeter appearing between text qualifiers?

  There are several SQL split functions, from loop driven, to using xml commands, and even using a numbers table. I haven't found one that supports text qualifiers. Using the example string below, I would like to split on ",", but not when it appears between double or single quotes. • Is recursion ever faster than looping?

  I know that recursion is sometimes a lot cleaner than looping, and I'm not asking anything about when I should use recursion over iteration, I know there are lots of questions about that already. What I'm asking is, is recursion ever faster than a loop? To me it seems like, you would always be able to refine a loop and get it to perform more quickly than a recursive function because the loop is absent constantly setting up new stack frames. I'm specifically looking for whether recursion is faster in applications where recursion is the right way to handle the data, such as in some sorting functions, in binary trees, etc.

• "Randomly" occurring errors...

  Hi, My website has a setup whereby when the application starts a module called SiteContent is "created". This runs a clearup function which basically deletes any irrelevant data from the database, in case any has been left in there from previously run functions. The module has instances of Manager classes - namely RangeManager, CollectionManager, DesignManager. There are others but I will just use these as an example. Each Manager class contains an array of items - items may be of type Range, Collection or Design, whichever one is relevant. Data for each range is then read into an instance of Range, Collection or Design. I know this is basically duplicating data - not very efficient but its my final year project at the moment so I can always change it to use Linq or something similar later, when I am not pressured by the one month deadline. I have a form which, on clicking the Save button, saves data by calling SiteContent.RangeManager.Create(vars) or SiteContent.RangeManager.Update(Range As Range, vars) (or the equivalent for other manager classes, whichever one happens to be relevant). These functions call a stored procedure to insert or update in the relevant table. Classes Range, Collection and Design all have attributes such as Name, Description, Display and several others. When the Create or Update function is called, the Manager loops through all the other items to check if an item with the same name already exists. The Update function ensures that it does not compare the item being updated to itself. A custom exception (ItemAlreadyExistsException) is thrown if another item with the same name is found. For some weird reason, if I go into a Range, Collection or Design in edit mode, change something and try to update it, it occasionally doesnt update the item. When I say occasionally I mean every 3 - 4 page loads, sometimes more. I see absolutely no pattern in when or why it occurs. I have a try-catch statement which catches ItemAlreadyExistsException, and outputs "An item with this name already exists" when caught. Occasionally it will output this; other times it will not. Does anyone have any idea why this could happen? Maybe a mistake which someone has made and solved before? I used to have regular expressions in place that the names were compared to - I believe it was [a-zA-Z]{1, 100} (between 1 and 100 lower- or upper-case characters). For some reason the customer who I am developing the site for used to get errors saying its not in the correct format. Yet he could try the same text 5 minutes later and it would work fine. I am thinking this could well be the same problem, since both problems occur at random. Many thanks in advance. Regards, Richard Clarke Edit: After much time spent narrowing down the code, I have decided to wait till my brother, who has been a programmer for at least 8 years more than I have, to come down over Easter and get him to have a look at it. If he cant solve it then I will zip the files up and put them somewhere for people to access and have a go at. I narrowed it down literally to the minimum number of files possible, and it still occurs. It seems to be about every 10th time. Having said that, I force the manager classes to refresh every 10 page loads or 5 minutes (whichever one is sooner). I may look into this - this could be causing a problem. Basically each Manager contains an array of an object. This array is populated using data from the database. The Update function takes an instance of the item and the new values to be set for the object. If it happens to be a page load where the array is reset (ie the data is loaded freshly from the database) then the object instance with the same ID wont be the same instance as the one being passed in. This explains the fact that it throws an ItemAlreadyExistsException now and then. It all makes sense now the more I think about it. If I were to pass in the ID of the object to be altered, rather than the object itself, then it should work perfectly. I will answer the question if I solve it..

  I'm looking to use NVelocity in my ASP.NET MVC application, not as a view engine, just for rendering some email templates. However, I cannot for the life of me get it to work. I have downloaded it from the castle project and followed the example at http://www.castleproject.org/others/nvelocity/usingit.html#step1 No matter what I try I don't seem to be able to load a template located in my site. The example suggests using the absolute path, which I have tried to no avail: Template t = engine.GetTemplate("/Templates/TestEmail.vm"); So please can someone give me two examples. One of loading a template located in the web site directory and secondly one parsing a string variable (as it is likely that my templates will be stored in a database). Many thanks Ben

  Hello, I have this code that saves a pdf file. FileStream fs = new FileStream(SaveLocation, FileMode.Create); fs.Write(result.DocumentBytes, 0, result.DocumentBytes.Length); fs.Flush(); fs.Close(); It works fine. However sometimes it does not release the lock right away and that causes file locking exceptions with functions run after this one run. Is there a ideal way to release the file lock right after the fs.Close() thanks!

• Start position for a reused t- sql cursor?

  I'm working on a stored procedure that uses a cursor on a temporary table (I have read a bit about why cursors are undesirable, but in this situation I believe I still need to use one). In my procedure I need to step through the rows of the table twice. Having declared the cursor, already stepped through the temporary table once and closed the cursor, would the position of the cursor remain at the end of the table when re-opened or does it reposition itself to the initial starting position (ie: before the first row)? Alternatively, to reposition the cursor must I do a 'FETCH FIRST' before stepping through again? Am I right to assume the 'cost' of doing this repositioning and reusing the cursor would be less than deallocating and reallocating the cursor?
