• How to enable connection security for WMI firewall rules when using VAMT 2.0?

  I want to use VAMT 2.0 to install product keys and active software in remote machines. Everything works fine as long as the ASync-In, DCOM-In, and WMI-In Windows Firewall rules are enabled and the action is set to Allow the connection. However, when I try using Allow the connection if it is secure (regardless of the connection security option chosen) VAMT won't connect to the remote machine. I tried using wbemtest and the error always is “The RPC server is unavailable”, error code 0x800706ba. How do I setup at least some level of connection security for remote WMI access for VAMT to work? I googled for correct VAMT setup, read the Volume Activation 2.0 Step-by-Step guide, but no luck finding anything about connection security.

• vsftpd not allowing uploads. 550 response

  I've set vsftpd up on a centos box. I keep trying to upload files but I keep getting "550 Failed to change directory" and "550 Could not get file size." • Ubuntu boots into command line instead of X.

  I posted this on the Ubuntu forums and they had no good answer. I hope you guys have a solution! On my relatively new install, it's booting into command line instead of X--again. This is the reason I reinstalled in the first place. This has happened to me three times now. So, I boot up and it gets past GRUB, past the glowing Ubuntu option, then it prompts me for my username, then password. I run: startx And that starts the GUI for about a minute, then it runs the GUI login system. To add to the mess, the network-applet is not shown in the panel. Additionally, Chrome will not launch (I ran Firefox from the terminal). What's the problem here?

• HP ProBook 4720s UEFI boot only manually into 12.04

  I'm trying to get UEFI boot on my ProBook 4720s. Because I swapped the HDD for a SSD I had a blank canvas to start. The 12.04 Live DVD refuses to boot into UEFI, as do Alternate and desktop CD's. However, when I make a 16Gb flashdrive into a live FS using the bootdisk tool in ubuntu, I can boot from USB, manually into UEFI mode. It even sidesteps to DVD as medium when I boot from USB with 12.04 Live DVD present. I installed a GPT partitiontable with part 1, label EFI, fs FAT32, flag BOOT, mounts at /boot/efi part 2, label Linux-ROOT, fs ext4, no flags, mounts at / part 3, label Linux-SWAP, fs swap, no flags, mounts as swap So far, My system refuses to boot from harddrive by itself. I have to select "Boot from EFI file" and manually browse to (HD0,GPT1)\EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi any other option ends in "no system disk, please insert boot disk" I tried installing BURG, but that merely enforces non-efi boot. I tried most of the solutions I could find, but one says \EFI\grub\grub.cfg next says \EFI\ubuntu\ubuntu,cfg I'm confused and getting frustrated. How do I correctly install Ubuntu 12.04 in UEFI mode on this machine???

• IE8 Crash On Startup

  Hello All, I have a problem - IE8 has suddenly stopped working. I was doing some development work, and suddenly IE8 crashed every time I tried to use it. I've rebooted, but still crash every time I try to open it. There is no real indication as to what has gone wrong. It just says "Internet Explorer has stopped working". I've tried almost everything that I've seen when I've Googled it: I disabled all Add-Ins via Manage Add-Ins, but it still crashes on startup* I re-registered IEPROXY.DLL * The thing I don't understand is that if I start from the Run box with the -extoff option, IE starts up. Isn't that the same as disabling all Add-Ins? Any ideas? Thanks, wTs

• How do I tell sudo to write files with a umask of 0022?

  I recently upgrading to Snow Leopard. I have noticed that some files written by MacPorts are installed with the wrong permission -- they are written with a umask of 0077. I think I have narrowed down the problem: The port command is invoked via sudo. My .bashrc file specifies a umask of 0077. On older versions of OS X (10.5 and below), sudo used the umask of the root user (which was 0022); however, now it uses my umask of 0077. Is there anyway to have sudo use the old behavior? Right now, it's kind of annoying because I have to use sudo to run simple commands like port installed, port outdated, etc. (The problem is described in more detail in this MacPorts ticket.) Edit I discovered the umask option for sudo, and in /etc/sudoers I added the following line: Defaults umask=0022 However, this did not function as desired, because the real umask used by sudo is the union of the user mask with this default mask.

  Request-Reply is a new feature in 11g JMSAdapter that helps you achieve the following:Allows you to combine Request and Reply in a single step. In the prior releases of the Oracle SOA Suite, you would require to configure two distinct adapters. Performs automatic correlation without you needing to configure BPEL "correlation sets". This would work seamlessly in Mediator and BPMN as well.In order to configure the JMSAdapter Request-Reply, please follow these steps:1) Drag and drop a JMSAdapter onto the "External References" swim lane in your composite editor. 2) Enter default values for the first few screens in the JMS Adapter wizard till you hit the screen where the wizard prompts you to enter the operation name. Select "Request-Reply" as the "Operation Type" and Asynchronous as "Operation Name".3) Select the Request and Reply queues in the following screens of the wizard. The message will be en-queued in the "Request" queue and the reply will be returned in the "Reply" queue. The reason I have used such a selector is that the back-end system that reads from the request queue and generates the response in the response queue actually generates more than one response and hence I must use a filter to exclude the unwanted responses.4) Select the message schema for request as well as response. 5) Add an <invoke> activity in BPEL corresponding to the JMS Adapter partner link. Please note that I am setting an additional header as my third-party application requires this.6) Add a <receive> activity just after the <invoke> and select the "Reply" operation. • Making a full-screen animation on Android? Should I use OPENGL?

  Say I need to make several full-screen animation that would consist of about 500+ frames each, similar to the TalkingTom app ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.outfit7.talkingtom2free ). Animation should be playing at a reasonable speed - supposedly not less, then 20fps - and pictures should be of a reasonable quality, not overly compressed. What method do you think should I use? So far I tried: storing each frame as a compressed JPEG before animation starts, loading each frame into a byteArray as the animation plays, decode corresponding byteArray into a bitmap and draw it on a surface view. Problem - speed is too low, usually about 5-10 FPS. I have thought of two other options. turning all animations into one movie file... but I guess there might be problems with starting, pausing and seeking to the exactly right frame... what do you think? another option I thought about was using OPENGL ( while I never worked with it before ), to play animation frame by frame. What do you think, would opengl be able to handle it? Thanks!

• Where in the user profile are the Firefox search engine choices stored?

  We have a large number of user profiles that were created on Ubuntu 10.04 and they had access to Google as a choice in the search bar and Google was the provider for queries typed into the super bar. When logging into these same profiles from Mint 15 client machines, the Google search option does not exist for these users, as is the default for Mint. This setting seems to be user specific, but not a part of the FireFox profile? It seems if it were a part of the FF profile, it would "just work" on Mint for these profiles, so I suspect the configuration may be stored somewhere else in the user's profile? Could someone please tell me where in a user's profile the search engine options are set? We would like to set this once, and then drop this configuration into everyones profile so all of our users don't have to do this manually.

• Unity install removed window borders, and display drivers.

  I installed unity, used for a while. Then i installed gnome-shell, used it for a while. Now decided to switch back to standard. Gnome is not working the way it use to be. I am using T61 with nvidia-latest drivers. Following issues... Window borders are not showing. Installed compiz settings, and re-check window decorations option. I had to re-install nvidia driver, as when I tried to apply normal visual effects, it said no display driver found. Gnome panel is not coming, and mouse pointer is a "cross" than a "arrow". I then opened a terminal and enter gnome-panel. Panel came and window borders came back. Nothing is showing on desktop, and the right click is also not populating the menu. When i loging, an error message saying, docky did not start and it requires compiz to work. After starting gnome-panel from terminal, i went to systempreferencesAppearance. And selected normal visual effects. It activated, i selected keep the settings. Now when i restart or re-login, everything is gone. I have to run gnome-panel manually, and then re-enable visual setting. Ofcourse i can add gnome-panel in startup applications, but i want to know what has installing unity/gnome-shell has done, that these setting are messed up. I manually removed mutter, as Appearance application was showing mutter installed, cant enable effects. What shall i do to get back a standard gnome-desktop back.

• How to remove empty revisions from existing svn dump file?

  I have an svn dump file which includes "empty" revisions (these were created by svnsync when synching only a subdirectory of an existing repository). Since I'd like to use the svnsync'd repository as the new master (no need to sync again), I wanted to get rid of all the empty revisions. Unfortunately, running the dump through svndumpfilter does not seem to remove the empty revisions, probably because svndumpfilter only looks at revisions it cleaned up by itself with the --exclude option (see also here) I was also looking into svndumptool, but it does not seem to provide this functionality. Is it possible to filter these revisions in any other way?

• What are the options for hosting a small Plone site?

  I’ve developed a portfolio website for myself using Plone 4, and I’m looking for someplace to host it. Most Plone hosting services seem to focus on large, corporate deployments, but I need something that I can afford on a very limited budget and fits a small, single-admin website. My understanding is that my basic options are thus: I can go with a hosting service that specifically provides Plone. I know of WebFaction, but what others exist? Also, I’d have two stipulations for a Plone hosting service: (a) It needs to use Plone 4, for which I’ve developed my site, and (b) it needs to allow me SSH access to a home directory (including the Plone configuration), so that I may use my custom development eggs and such. I could use a VPS hosting service. What are my options here? Again, I need something cheap and scaled to my level. I could use Amazon EC2 or a similar service (please tell me of any) and pay by the tiniest unit of data. I’m a little scared of this because I have no idea how to do a cost-benefit analysis between this and a regular VPS host. The advantage of this approach would be that I only pay for what I use, making it very scalable, but I don’t know how the overall cost would compare to any VPS host under similar circumstances. What factors enter into the cost of Amazon EC2? What can I expect to pay under either option for regular traffic for a new website? Which one is more desirable for when a rush of visitors drive up my bandwidth bill? One last note: I know Plone isn’t common for websites for individuals, but please don’t try to talk me out of it here; that’s a completely different subject. For now, assume I’m sticking with Plone for good. Also, I have seen the Plone hosting services list on Plone.org—it’s twenty pages long, and the first page was nothing but professional Plone consulting services that sometimes offer hosting for business clients. • PHP Browser Game Question - Pretty General Language Suitability and Approach Question

  I'm developing a browser game, using PHP, but I'm unsure if the way I'm going about doing it is to be encouraged anymore. It's basically one of those MMOs where you level up various buildings and what have you, but, you then commit some abstract fighting entity that the game gives you, to an automated battle with another player (producing a textual, but hopefully amusing and varied combat report). Basically, as soon as two players agree to fight, PHP functions on the "fight.php" page run queries against a huge MySQL database, looking up all sorts of complicated fight moves and outcomes. There are about three hundred thousand combinations of combat stance, attack, move and defensive stances, so obviously this is quite a resource hungry process, and, on the super cheapo hosted server I'm using for development, it rapidly runs out of memory. The PHP script for the fight logic currently has about a thousand lines of code in it, and I'd say it's about half-finished as I try to add a bit of AI into the fight script. Is there a better way to do something this massive than simply having some functions in a PHP file calling the MySQL Database? I taught myself a modicum of PHP a while ago, and most of the stuff I read online (ages ago) about similar games was all PHP-based. but a) am I right to be using PHP at all, and b) am I missing some clever way of doing things that will somehow reduce server resource requirements? I'd consider non PHP alternatives but, if PHP is suitable, I'd rather stick to that, so there's no overhead of learning something new. I think I'd bite that bullet if it's the best option for a better game, though.

• Picasa "sync to web" folders losing sync when they are moved

  I've been using the Picasa "sync to web" feature but recently noticed that several folders, with a lot of synced photos and videos inside them, lost their synced status as soon as I moved them to another location on the disk (not through the Picasa "move folder" command). These folders now still appear with the green arrow indicating that their contents were uploaded, but they lost the blue sync icon they previously had (and are no longer syncing...). If I try to reactivate the "sync to web" option for these folders, Picasa starts re-uploading ALL of their contents. This is absurd.. and would take ages to complete. Is there any way I can somehow get Picasa to recognize these moved folders as the counterpart folder of an existing online folder for sync purposes?

• IE9 Kiosk Mode scheduled task opens behind taskbar

  I've set up a scheduled task in Windows 7 Pro to open up Internet Explorer 9 (x86 version) in kiosk mode. The scheduled task executes when a certain user logs in, and this user is logged in automatically when Windows starts. This is the command I'm using to start IE: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -k http://example.com So far so good - the computer boots up, the user gets logged in, and IE opens up in kiosk mode. The problem is that IE seems to open behind the taskbar - so the taskbar (start menu, pinned programs, etc.) appears at the bottom of the window, and the bottom of the IE window is visible through the taskbar (since the taskbar is translucent). Is there anything I can do, preferably without installing any third party programs (although I will go for that option if none other is available), to ensure that the IE9 kiosk window always opens in front of the taskbar?

• how do I have a windows group automatically map a drive on connection?

  I have 3 different windows user groups. Each group needs to have a certain drive mapped, unique to that group. Is there a way to say x group maps to y drive every time they connect? If I put something in their start up, that's a lot of manual work. I am needing something that I have set per user group, if possible. If this is not feasible, is there another option? • How to boot between OSes from inside each OS? in a Windows/Ubuntu dual boot system

  My ideal scenario is that there is a script/command to boot into the alternate OS from the current OS you are in, restarting the same OS without running the script/command will return it to the same OS. Currently I have grub setup to remember the last OS booted, using GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, I'd like to keep this option. I have read about the ability to manipulate grub from within Ubuntu to boot into windows, shown in this link. Is there a way to similarly boot into Ubuntu from within Windows? I am primarily connecting to this device remotely and hence my query.

• Add unallocated space to lvm

  I shrunk my windows partition and now have 10 GB of unallocated space that I now want to use to grow my / partition which is an ext4 in an lvm. I'm running Fedora 12. I ran system-config-lvm but the "Initialize Entry" button is greyed out. The unallocated space is not adjacent to the lvm but I cannot move the partitions in GParted like I was able to with ext3 in the past. I cannot create a new partition either as it says it cannot have more than 4 primary partitions. I don't see any option to create an extended partition. So my question is, how do I add that unallocated space to the lvm so I can grow the size of the / partition? I don't want to reinstall Fedora.

• Apache proxying to Unicorn server times out, how to avoid?

  I have a Teambox installation running on Unicorn, and the latter sometimes times out after 30 seconds. The idea of this configuration would be for Apache to wait until the Unicorn master server sends a timeout, because if I'm not wrong, Unicorn will quit the timed-out worker process but spawn a new one to handle the same request. Is there a way to configure Apache to not timeout like the nginx configuration of timeout = 0? Thanks for the help! EDIT I found a way, though it doesn't really work as I expected. In the ProxyPass directive you have to specify a retry=0 option after the url: ProxyPass / http://url/ retry=0 It doesn't work if the url is a ProxyBalancer though.

• What cloud backup solution supports a "backup server to cloud" configuration?

  What online backup tool allows you to: A) Back up Windows, Linux and optionally Mac desktops and servers to the cloud B) Do so by first backing up to a central server or appliance C) Allow restoring from that appliance when possible and if not go to the cloud For now the best option I have seen is i365 by seagate with an appliance between the local computers and the cloud. I know Microsoft also has an i365 plugin for DPM, as well as an Iron Mountain plugin. However, I feel that there must be a simpler way to do this. Can any of the "simpler" solutions like Jungle Disk or anything else going to s3, Mozy, Carbonite, Crashplan, etc do this? Thank you

• Why would the IIS UrlRewrite module continue redirecting requests after the rule is removed?

  Our application uses the IIS UrlRewrite module to temporarily redirect requests during upgrades to a maintenance site. We have seen a few instances where even though the redirect rule has been removed, the server continues to redirect all requests according to the removed rule. There does not seem to be any pattern with this, and has only occurred once or twice. We have taken the following steps to try and determine the cause of this behavior. Verified that the original rule was a 307 temporary redirect Requested the application from machines that had never requested it before Used a different browser Added and removed a dummy rule from the IIS management console Checked the http kernel cache using netsh http show cachestate Modified the applicationHost.config file by hand (the rule was not still in the file, we just added a superfluous space) In the past when this has happened, we have been able to restart IIS and it solves the problem but that is not always an option and we really want to figure out what the root cause is. How or why would UrlRewrite be caching the response and not responding to configuration changes?
