  Hi all. I need to connect via remote desktop to a Windows XP machine (logging out the current user), do some stuff, and then logout the rdesktop session and having a user X which log in (from the front-end I mean). I try to be clearer: I've some windows XP machines which offers some interactive informations in public places. I need to rdekstop them to do some assistance, and then I'd like to logout and have the main user (the one which offers the service) logged back. I know there's a command for the windows prompt to achieve this, but cannot find it out!

  My home network consists of a couple Windows XP machines and a Windows 7 box. One of the Windows XP boxes is like a shared server accessed via Remote Desktop. I have an account on there and my gf has another. Previously I was able to save RDC shortcuts to this shared server including credentials. So in order to access the server from a computer on the network, I just needed to open the shortcut. I thus would have two shortcuts, one for my account and one for my gf's. In Windows 7, it seems to store credentials for a box based on machine name. I.e. I can only store one set of credentials per machine name. This seems incredibly stupid so my question is: In Windows 7, is there some way to have RDC shortcuts that use different credentials to login to the same target box?

Try reconnecting to the Windows-based computer, or contact our administrator. I have downloaded CoRD, and for some reason, that works okay. I can also connect from a Windows 7 running on VMWare Fusion. On Windows 7, I use SonicWall Global VPN Client, and on the Mac, I use VPN tracker, if that is related... What's going on?

• Windows user cannot connect via application, but can via Remote Desktop

  I have an application (ASG-Zena) giving an 1385 error (Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer) when trying to run a batch job. I have checked on "Access this computer from the network" includes Everyone and Administrators and many others. "Deny access to this computer from the network" make sure that Guest is not listed there. If you still have problems, then maybe make sure that nothing is listed there. Administrative tools...local security policy..security options "Network access sharing and security model for local accounts" there are 2 options either classic or 'guest only'. Mine is set to classic. (These diagnostics come from this post) The account in question is added to the Administrator group on this computer. I know the login is valid because I regularly login to the server via remote Desktop. What other settings should I check?

  I want to mount iso files without root permission by fuseiso, and this is how to mount a iso file: fuseiso -p '/path/to/isofilename' '/media/isofilename' , so I make a .desktop file followed Freedesktop Standard (The Exec key) as bellow: #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open [Desktop Entry] Name=Mount ISO image Name[zh_TW]=??????? Exec=fuseiso -p %U "/media/$(basename %U)" Terminal=false MimeType=application/x-cd-image , but it failed. I think it failed because of $(basename %U), if it is changed to a fixed string, the iso file can be mounted. How can I solve this problem?

  I have another question posted in regards to the practicality of whitelisting. In this question I'm simply looking for an frequently updated list of top known used Desktop web browsers to use as part of my whitelist. I'm not trying to target any specific OS so please show one, show all. The list of browsers for desktops isn't exploding, but it does grow. I've only recently been made aware of other browsers that have multiple rendering engines. I'm not always on top of the text based browsers found out there either. I'm aware of the mobile browser platform and there is an active list used with regular expression for identification purposes that I will use as well as whatever I can find for the desktop platforms.

• Camtasia on remote computer?

  I have a need to use one laptop for a live presentation (with projector, etc.), but record that presentation on another laptop -- similar to what I can do with Camtasia, only with the recording happening on another laptop. Is this possible? What do I need to do this? Some VGA device that goes between the presenting machine and the projector? Some USB device? My ideal requirements: The machines must be "standard" laptops (so I can't just add a new card to a desktop, etc.). I prefer a hardware solution, but cannot involve studio type equipment. I'd prefer not to install Camtasia (or similar) on the presenting machine for two reasons: licensing issues performance issues (sometimes the presentations are machine intensive and I don't want the recording software to interfere with the presentation) I'd appreciate any tips. • Server 2008 R2 Remote Desktop Gateway Role and IIS7

  I am attempting to setup a RD Gateway for a client. When I first set it up I noticed that IIS did not have the 'Defualt Web Site' so I created it and assigned it an id of 1 and set the bindings to port 80 and 443. I then re installed the RD Gateway role with the idea that it would then configure IIS correctly. It did not. How would I go about making sure a re install of the Remote Desktop Gateway role configures IIS correctly? I cannot re install IIS as there is a site that is already on there that I cannot take down

• Prevent machine in a LAN from receiving a remote shutdown

  I'm probably just overreacting, but I recently came across a LAN-scanner that showed me the option "remote shutdown", for all found computers on the scanned network. Now, how exactly does this work? If I send such a message, will the shutdown happen no matter what, or is it required to have the password/user-name of the user of that other computer. Mostly I'm wondering: can this be done to me and how do I prevent it? EDIT: what's more, I had the scanner check for shares. The result being this: Double clicking the links opens them in explorer, basically meaning my entire C and F drive(only 2 HD's I have) are completely exposed to anyone in my LAN. Or can I open these because it's my own machine?

  Hi everyone, I have a linksys wrt54g router and a windows 7 box at home I'd like to be able to remote desktop into from work. Would it be possible for someone to point me in the right direction on what I need to configure to get this working, both on the router and on the win 7 box?   I am running a Windows slave for Husdon 1.337 (Linux master). When running a project on the Windows node, it fails with the following message: Building remotely on winTestSlave Checking out a fresh workspace because there's no workspace at C:\hudson\***\ejb remote file operation failed It did work yesterday and I have not upgraded Hudson or changed its configurations (or the slave's configurations) in any way. I establish the connection between the slave and the master by running the following command on a cygwim prompt on the slave: java -jar slave.jar -jnlpUrl http://myserver/computer/winTestSlave/slave-agent.jnlp I saw the issue http://issues.hudson-ci.org/browse/HUDSON-5374 and did as instructed in the work-around but that did not work. I also tried with a newer version of slave.jar (version 1.356) but that did not work either. Does anyone please have any idea of how to fix this? I really cannot find more information anywhere else!

  Preliminary Note: After reading what I wrote below, I would like to stress that this ain't a TeamViewer ad. It's just that all other tools that I checkked online seem to miss one feature or the other. :-) OK, so I'm currently trying to get a picture of available solutions for remote desktop software. I have found (through personal usage) that TeamViewer pretty much ticks all boxes that I personally would want from any remoting tool. (Specifically it's setup is amazingly trivial.) It supports a wide range of platforms and it's even free for private use, so I'm really quite OK with it. I would be interested if anyone knows of other tools that ticks as many boxes as TeamViewer seems to do.

  I have two Mac notebooks at home, I have assigned them static private IPs. I have also set my router to a DynDNS address, which updates everytime my router gets a new public IP. I have enabled Screen Sharing on both notebooks. I can successfully goto my router webpage using the DynDNS address. I understand I need to port-forward to get Screen Sharing to work from outside. Lets assume, notebooks have private IP 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 I am kind of lost here, would appreciate some help (I need to be able remote desktop to both notebooks)

• Rolling desktop recorder?

  I want a piece of software that will constantly record what I'm doing on my desktop, discarding footage that's over [30] seconds old. Its recording would be a rolling one. The idea is that I can somehow hit a button and see "what just happened". I don't want to have to babysit it. That is, I don't want a piece of software designed for screencasting (which I'm not trying to do). My bias against that is based on my (maybe incorrect?) assumption that I'd regularly have to start/stop the recording throughout the day. The idea is that this piece of software would consume fewer resources (than a screencast recorder) on my box, as it's only keeping a very limited amount of footage in memory (and low quality would even be acceptable), because it's discarding frames fairly quickly after they're captured. Where can I find a piece of software with features like this?

  I want to set up a server to allow remote access over a WAN. The purpose is to allow people to remote connect and download specific files from a specified folder hosted on the server. Is there software available to achieve this, preferably with an interface so I can easily add and remove users, plus monitor who is connected at any time? I have looked around and only found terminal references, and not very clear how to set up. I have a service running on my Win server, but I am hoping to move from that to Ubuntu for my file sharing. I do not want people who access the server to have any local accounts or any access to any folder/files apart from authorised folders/files. Thanks

• VPN provider for remote access to servers from a known IP address

  My organization has a few servers that are being hosted by a provider and we limit remote access to a whitelist and deny access to any IPs not on the whitelist. We would like to find a hosted VPN service that we can connect to that would give us a known IP that we could add to our whitelist and gain access to the servers while on the road. Does anyone know of any such services? I don't think we can just setup the VPN built in to Windows Server since the servers are hosted. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• External stereo receiver and speakers on desktop PC work during test but no other time

  I have a desktop PC running Windows 7. I have connected an external stereo receiver and speakers to it and everything works fine when I test it in the Realtek Audio Sound through the control panel. However, when I play a video or an audio CD, the stereo speakers do not work. I have line in, line out, and speakers connected to the receiver. I have been through the configure speakers portion also. Is there someplace else I need to configure?

  I'm hoping to try and do some trans-atlantic tech support for my in-laws. Both my machine and theirs are running Windows 7 Home Premium. I read in this HowToGeek article that the Home editions of Windows 7 and Vista don't support remote access. What's the most straightforward way for me to access their machine - bearing in mind that they are a retired couple and this is their first computer and therefore anything that needs to happen at their end needs to be super simple. Free would be prefered but if there is a good paid for solution I'd consider it.

• Windows sometimes minimizes game and shows the desktop?

  For some reason, every once in a while when I'm playing a full-screen game in Windows 7, the game will minimize and focus will be given to the Desktop. I don't know what does this because no other problem appears to activate (nothing new in the taskbar or system tray appears). This occurs in a variety of games, from a variety of publishers, so it's definitely not the game that's having the problem. When this occurs, I can simply click on the game to go back to it, but it's obviously still quite annoying. Anyone know what's going on here? Is this a common occurrence with a simple fix?   I am a programmer using Linux as my main OS, however sometimes I need to use windows (ie, office, ea). I'm running qemu with kvm to access the windows "machine". I would like to achieve something that is described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SeamlessVirtualization (It means I would be able to run chosen applications on Windows and then display them locally on Linux as separate windows achieving good desktop integration). However seamless rdp is buggy and doesn't work on my machine (probably because I'm using a tiling window manager and a 64bit system). Are you aware of any other solution then rdp seamless mode? I would prefer to still use quemu because it uses cpu hardware virtualization, so different protocol/client combination would be preferable.

• Windows Desktop Randomly Switches Resolution

  Once per log in a specific account, Windows XP is switching to 800x600 and 8 (looks like) bit color. It then after a few seconds switches back to the regular settings. This, so far, has only happened, once per log in session but it is becoming very annoying for the end user. :P Any ideas? I've tried turning off hardware acceleration as well as getting rid of her picture desktop wallpaper but nothing has made a difference. Thanks for any help!

• Is it possible to make the desktop background transparent or otherwise hidden?

  I'm running Ubuntu in a virtual machine via VirtualBox. I have the seamless mode turned on, which is pretty cool. However, if I move an Ubuntu window around quickly, I can see the redraw of the ubuntu background quickly before it's hidden by VirtualBox again. This isn't a huge deal, but I'd like to fix it, if possible. I see two possible options that don't involve changing VirtualBox code: 1. Make the Ubuntu desktop transparent 2. Make the Ubuntu desktop hidden entirely Is it possible to do either? I know that Compiz Fusion has/had a feature to do this for their cube effects, but I don't think that I can run this on the VM. And, even if I could, I don't want to run those services for this one small feature.

  i'm stuck in connecting to a PostresSQL database from remote host. The server is accepting incoming connections on port 5432 and i've configured pg_hba.conf like this: local all all md5 host all all 0.0.0.0/0 md5 and the postgresql.conf like this: listen_addresses = '*' port = 5432 max_connections = 100 I don't have any problem accessing from local but when i try to connect via psql with something like this: psql -U myuser -h hostname db_name I get this error: psql: FATAL: no pg_hba.conf entry for host "87.zz.yy.xxx", user "myuser", database "db_name", SSL off I also tried to put the host 87.zz.yy.xxx in the pg_hba.conf file without success.

  I have a windows server 2003 computer that is accessed by remote desktop connection. To access the server all you need to know is the IP address of the computer. I want to limit the computers that can access the windows server computer to authorized computers only. The authorized computers won't have static IPs, so I cannot limit them on basis of IP address. Can I limit them on basis of MAC id perhaps? I won't mind using third party solution like Teamviewer or Logmein etc. So How can I solve this problem?
