• Evolution email forgets all settings after reboot

  My Evolution email client keeps forgetting all settings after a reboot or even a logout/login! Please help! I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a new laptop. To move my Evolution settings and email over to the new machine, I selected "backup", which creates a single tar.gz archive of all Evolution settings and mail. I copied the file to the new computer, started Evolution which presented me with the startup assistant. I selected 'restore from backup', pointed at the tar.gz file and all was beautifully restored. All seemed to work just fine. However, after a reboot I noticed that Evolution seems to have forgotten all settings: I get the startup assistant again when I start Evolution. I checked that the .conf/evolution and .local/share/evolution directories were still present, yet, none of that seemed to matter, it wanted me to restore from a backup again. The version of Ubuntu (12.04) and Evolution (3.2.3) are the same on the old and new laptop. Just stopping and restarting Evolution does not cause this problem. Even if I manually kill all Evolution related processes, the settings will be remembered and it can start up no problem. The problem only happens on logout/login or reboot. • How to reset display settings in XFCE \ Ubuntu 12.04 and also flgrx drivers

  I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and since I hate unity I installed the Xubuntu package and am using XFCE instead. Since I have a Radeon HD5770 I also installed the fglrx drivers. This all went fine (aside from the fact that the post-release update fglrx drivers have an error on installation and Ubuntu thinks they're not installed when they actually are. I configured my display settings (dual monitors, a 17" CRT on VGA and a 17" LCD on DVI) in the amdcccle program and everything was perfect. THEN, 2 days ago, I accidentally clicked on the "Display" settings in XFCE "settings" manager. After that, everything got screwed. Now, I normally run the CRT at 1152x854 and the LCD at 1280x1024 with the CRT as my primary monitor (with panel) and the LCD without panels etc just to display other windows when I want to drag them over there. The problem is now that if I set my CRT to 1152x864, it stays at 1280x1024 virtually and half the stuff falls off the screen. It also puts the LCD at 1280x1024 BUT then overlays the CRT's display ontop with different wallpaper in an L shape down the right-hand and bottom edges. In short, nothing makes sense and everything is FUBAR. I tried uninstalling fglrx through synaptic, and renaming xorg.conf and also the xfce XML file that has monitor settings but it still won't make sense. Unity on the other hand can currently set everything normally so the problem appears to be only with XFCE. In any case, I can't even get the fglrx drivers back, when I re-installed them, I can't run amdccle anymore as it says the driver isn't installed!! Can someone help me reset my XFCE settings so the monitors aren't screwed with some incorrect virtual desktop size and also so I can get fglrx drivers back and working? I really don't want to have to format and reinstall and go through all the hassle but it looks like I may have to :(

• Sharing configuration settings between Windows Azure roles

  If you are working on a medium-large Windows Azure project it's likely it will involve more than one role, for example separate web and worker roles. Unfortunately although all the windows azure configuration settings are stored in a single cscfg file, there is no way to share configuration settings between multiple roles. This means you have to duplicate common settings like connection strings across all your roles. There is an open Connect issue about this topic, but Microsoft have not said when they will fix it. In the mean time I've put together a dirty dirty hack cunning workaround that creates a fake role containing your shared configuration settings, and copies it to all roles as part of the build process. Here's how you set it up: 1. Download the zip file attached to this post, and unzip it into the folder containing your Azure project (not your solution folder). 2. • Cloud Backup: Getting the Users' Backs Up

  On Wednesday last week, Microsoft announced that as of July 1, all data transfers into its Microsoft Azure cloud will be free (though you have to pay for transferring data out). On Thursday last week, SQL Azure in Western Europe went down. It was a relatively short outage, but since SQL Azure currently provides no easy way to take a standard backup of a database and store it locally, many people had no recourse but to wait patiently for their cloud-based app to resume. It seems that Microsoft are very keen encourage developers to move their data onto their cloud, but are developers ready to do it, given that such basic backup capabilities are lacking? Recently on Simple-Talk, Mike Mooney described a perfect use case for the Microsoft Cloud. They had a simple web-based application with a SQL Server backend; they could move the application to Windows Azure, and the data into SQL Azure and in the process free themselves from much of the hassle surrounding management and scaling of the hardware, network and so on. It was a great fit and yet it nearly didn't happen; lack of support for the BACKUP command almost proved a show-stopper. Of course, backups of Azure databases are always and have always been taken automatically, for disaster recovery purposes, but these are strictly on-cloud copies and as of now it is not possible to use them to them to restore a database to a particular point in time. It seems that none of those clever Microsoft people managed to predict the need to perform basic backups of Azure databases so that copies could be stored locally, outside the Azure universe. At the very least, as Mike points out, performing a local backup before a new deployment is more or less mandatory. Microsoft did at least note the sound of gnashing teeth and, as a stop-gap measure, offered SQL Azure Database Copy which basically allows you to create an online clone of your database, but this doesn't allow for storing local archives of the data. To that end MS has provided SQL Azure Import/Export, to package up and export a database and its data, using BACPACs. These BACPACs do not guarantee transactional consistency; for example, if a child table is modified after the parent is copied, then the copied database will be in inconsistent state (meaning, to add to the fun, BACPACs need to be created from a database copy). In any event, widespread problems with BACPAC's evil cousin, the DACPAC have been well-documented, and it seems likely that many will also give BACPAC the bum's rush. Finally, in a TechEd 2011 presentation tagged "SQL Azure Advanced Administration", it was announced that "backup and restore" were coming in the next SQL Azure CTP. And yet this still doesn't mean that we'll get simple backups as DBAs know and love them. What it does mean, at least, is the ability to restore any given database to a point in time within a 2-week window. For the time being, if you want a local copy of your data and don't want to brave the BACPAC, one is left with SSIS or BCP, creative use of schema and data comparison tools, or use of SQL Azure Backup (currently in beta) in order to perform this simple but vital task. • How do I disable changing proxy settings?

  I've got several machines, running 14.04.1, for kids to access. Each machine has accounts for each kid, as well accounts for several adults. Although I've set a system wide proxy use policy, it doesn't get used by Chrome. Instead, I had to log into each kids account and set a proxy use policy, pointing to tinyproxy/dansguardian, for safe internet access. The problem is that, should the kids get an ounce of computer savvy, they'll figure out that they can launch the proxy settings config panel from Unity, then change the proxy settings to None, and completely bypass the "safe" internet scheme I've setup. Can anyone tell me how I can disable those user accounts from being able to modify their proxy settings (not the "system wide" ones... those arent used.. this is the per-user settings). Thanks

• Cookie Settings Storage Method

  I've got an web app that needs to store some non-sensitive preferences for the user. Right now I'm storing their language preference and what mode they want a window opened in by default in two cookies: "lang" can be "en" or "de" "mode" can be "design" or "view" I might add a few more in the future. I'm not sure how many, but probably never more than a dozen. Language is parsed on every request, whereas the mode cookie is only used occasionally. I saw a recommendation that made sense I shouldn't try to do what I was originally planning to do and strongly type a user settings class deserialized on each request because of the overhead involved. I see three options here and I'm not sure which is the best overall. Keep things as they are, add a new cookie for each new setting Combine the cookies into a single settings cookie and add future values to it Change the mode cookie to settings (leaving language alone), add new user settings values to the settings cookie All would work obviously. I'm leaning toward option three, but I'm not sure if there's a best practice for this?

• How can I take a one time full backup of a Windows Server without the need for a restore program?

  I have a Windows SBS server with about 500GB of data that I'm decommissioning but I'd like to take a final backup of the server and place it on an external USB drive. I already have multiple backups of the server on disk from the past but they are through Simpana Commvault. I'd like a backup that will simply copy the file structure, ACLs, timestamps, etc. as is to a NTFS volume on the external drive. This way if someone says "I need x file on the server you decommed" I can search the external drive real quick instead of firing up Commvault, cataloging, restore, etc. I know the built-in Windows backup is great, I just don't feel like running it for a restore job on this. I'd like an option where in the future it won't require a program to run a restore. Rather a simple mount of the drive will suffice. I believe I can use robocopy just fine, but I'm not sure if it will grab the Windows directory, system files, and full user profiles correctly even with the /ZB option. Options? Is Robocopy /E /ZB /COPYALL /DCOPY:DAT /MT:32 /R:5 /W:5 /LOG:copylog.log the way to go here?

• Most cost efficient way to backup Subversion data to S3?

  I'm looking at using S3 as an offsite backup repo for my Subversion database. When I dump my SVN database, it's about 10 gigabytes. I would like to avoid the charge of uploading that data repeatedly. The anatomy of this large file such that new changes to Subversion modify the tail of the file, with everything else staying the same. Because Amazon S3 does not allow you to "patch" files with changes, I will have to upload ten gigs every time I instantiate a backup after doing a simple submit to Subversion. Here are the options as I see them: Option 1 I am looking at duplicity which has --volsize which splits data over an amount of megs. Is it possible to split the Subversion dumps using this so further incremental backups are measured in megabytes? Option 2 Can I just backup the hot subversion repository? This seems like a bad idea if it is in the middle of writing a submit. However, I have the option of taking the repo offline between the hours of midnight and 4am. Each revision in my Berkeley DB uses a file as its record.

• How can I backup entire installations of a program, instead of just manually backing up individual f

  It seems pretty straightforward to backup individual files, such as pictures, saved games, or settings files - just copy them straight over to your 2nd HDD or to an online service like DropBox. However, is there any way to backup entire installations of a program? For instance, my Firefox directory has a lot of personal customizations and add-ons. I don't want to go through each item and decide to back it up or let it go. So my next option is to copy out the entire directory for backup. But, if I copy the entire directory back onto the HD after a format, it is not an integrated installation and this seems like it could be troublesome. I would assume Windows cannot detect the directory for uninstallation, or would not let you choose Firefox as your default browser, right? I'm no pro, but this sounds like a bad idea. So my question is whether there is a good way to preserve all necessary files, while also preserving the full installation process of an application. This is not specific to Firefox - I would like to know how to do this for any application. Thank you.

  I set up an amazon ec2 instance using ubuntu server edition. I install LAMP stack on it. I did up a php web app running on mysql. I have not officially launched, but I need to know this before launching. Should I backup my database data? If so, how should I do it as cost effective as possible? Previously for another web app, i wrote a perl or bash script (cannot remember) that will be executed by cron on a daily basis. The script will then backup the database into a single .sql file and send as email attachment to my gmail account. That web app was on shared hosting hence, I was quite sure i needed to do backup of my database. My files are on git repo so I am not worried about that. Please advise. I am totally unfamiliar with AWS. Only know as much as setting up an account. That is all. Thank you.

Each dump is 20MiB. does this every six hours (one months of backups is roughly 2GiB) The problem with this setup is that if my local machine goes down for whatever reason, no backups will be made. Also, I can't have the cron run from the server, because I can't have it scp'd to my local machine from my server (firewalls and all that crap). My local machine is running Ubuntu 10.04, and my server is Ubuntu 9.10 server edition. I looked into Ubuntu One, but currently it's gui-only. I also looked into dropbox, but it's a pain in the ass to get setup in linux without gui support. Amazon S3 looks good but it's not free (yet dirt cheap). Is there any other alternative that I should look into? I'd prefer something where I can just have my script dump the database into a directory, and have the backup service 'watch' that folder and sync accordingly. I can maybe also have my local machine sync to the cloud backup so I have even more redundancy, plus easy access to my backups for use in testing.

• I need to preserve a tape using symantec backup exec. I'm aving trouble doing so

  Please forgive me if this is the wrong stack exchange site. Please suggest which one I should post this to if it is. There's an automatic tape machine running in a remote location, with software (symantec backup exec 11d) Recently one of the servers being backed up had problems with its raid controller, so one of the drives has become invisible. I need to preserve the last good backup of that drive so I am trying to replace the tape with the most recent backup of that drive on it with one of the scratch tapes (blank tapes) present in the machine. I've tried the following... Associate the blank media with the media set in question (Wednesday) For the existing media (the tape with the data I want to keep) I click 'move to vault' and move it to the offline vault. I associate it with something other than 'Wednesday' (a media set called 'keep data infinitely...') I then do an inventory on that slot. The above steps I'm led to believe are supposed to put the fresh tape in the slot that had the tape I want to keep in it. But it just keeps showing up as containing the tape I want to keep after the inventory. (after refreshing the device tree) I am a complete newbie with this software. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong, and/or tell me how to acheive my desired goal Edit: Just want to point out that I did try to get help directly from symantec with this, but having jumped through countless hoops to create an account and create a support ticket my progress was halted by requiring something called a 'tecnical contact id' at the final step with no explanation of what it is or how to get one.

• How to backup virtual machines on a standalone ESXi host?

  Standalone ESXi (4.1) host without any vCenter Server. How to backup virtual machines as quickly and storage-friendly as possible? I know I can access the ESXi console and use the standard Unix cp command, but this has the downfall of copying the whole VMDK files, not only their actually used space; so, for a 30-GB VMDK of which only 1 GB is used, the backup would take 30 full GBs of space, and time accordingly. And yes, I know about thin-provisioned virtual disks, but they tend to behave very badly when physically copied, and/or to blow up to their full provisioned size; also, they are not recommended for actual VM performance. It is ok for me to shut down the VMs before backing them up (i.e. I don't need "live" backups); but I need a way to copy them around efficiently; and yes, a way to automate shutdown/startup when taking a backup would also help. I only have ESXi; no Service Console, no vCenter Server... what's the best way to handle this task? Also, what about restores?

  I am a freelance developer. I have a PC, a laptop and an old testing and file server machine. I might add one or two in future. I want to have an on-site backup machine that can handle backups of ALL these machines - file backups, MySQL backups, backup of subversion repository, etc.. When building the machine, which components should I invest more in? Examples: The cabinet should have lots of room for expansion. Hard disk size should be large. But I guess hard disk speed need not be high (?) But other components like, RAM, PSU, Processor, Network card, Cooling, etc.. how much relative importance do these have in a backup machine? Which of these components should be high-end or large, and which ones need not be? Some Idea of the load: There will TBs of data. File backups and subversion repository backups will at least be done daily. MySQL backups done weekly. assume 3 machines at the moment and somewhere around 10 machines in the future.

  Which Windows 8 tool should I use to "read", "upload", my Windows 7 latest backup DVD (is it possible?). I've just installed W8 and haven't made any changes to my new ecosystem and, what happened was that, as I was managing my new drivers, some mess* occurred, I confess, and now what I have left is every single backup tool I made use of W7, like system images, restore dvds, backup up to date monthly and so on, and would like to keep in touch with W8. I'm one of those with problems managing the amd switchable gpu drivers. Now I want to stay with W8 (download version - didn't clean install) but with my old personal files. I don't care to programs updates. I got everything original on dvds, of my interest. Yesterday I tried refreshing W8 once but didn't work. Maybe trying again tonight. What would you guys do in my place, please? *the mess I am talking about is to have disabled my intel (the only driver left) gpu in device manager tool in W8. I got black screen on system boot. • Server.transfer causing HttpException

  I am developing a C#/SQL ASP.NET web application in VS 2008. Currently I am using the Server.Transfer method to transfer control from one ASPX.CS file to another ASPX file. The first time through, this works. But after control is transferred to this new file it encounters a condition: if (restart == false) { where "restart" is a boolean variable. • choose append to existing backup instead of overwrite

  Hello, I have a database and I made it's first backup 2 days ago. Then yesterday I spent an entire adding new records. This morning I ran a backup, (but I selected append to existing backup set) as pictured below. I just ran a restore and I found that it wiped out all my data from yesterday and it restored it from the backup of 2 days ago. Not the version from this mornings backup. I zipped this backup file to be safe. I changed some data in the DB, Then I ran the back up again, but this time I selected "overwrite all existing backup sets" Now when I restore the db it's seems to restore the data from the backup correctly. I think I learned a lesson here, correctly if I'm wrong My questions is, Did I lose an entire day of work? I still have this morning's backup .bak file safe in a zip. Is there anyway I can restore is with the right data?

• Is there a way to make my Windows know about my BIOS settings?

  For a very specific situation on a project, I need to make a Windows machine know about some specific settings at the BIOS(such as Enabled/Disabled PXE boot, Boot Sequence, Bios Version, and more....). I'm thinking in doing this with powershell, VBScript, or whatever(actually doesn't matter how, I just need to read these settings from Windows). I'm reseaching this and found nothing for now, there is a way(maybe a indirect one)?

• Can I back-up to partition to restore my computer to factory settings?

  I have a VAIO model VPC-F11JFX/B. I want to restore it to factory settings (instead of formatting it so I can keep the programs it comes with like VAIO Care). I have like 20 GB of data so I can't copy it into my flash drive and it would take up like 7 of my CD's so I can't do that either. So can I make a new partition (called D) and move the files to D from C. Because I don't know if restoring to factory settings is going to wipe the entire drive or just the partition.

  Periodically I back up the keys within my servers and databases, and when I do, I blog a reminder here. This should be part of your standard backup rotation – the keys should be backed up often enough to have at hand and again when they change. The first key you need to back up is the Service Master Key, which each Instance already has built-in. You do that with the BACKUP SERVICE MASTER KEY command, which you can read more about here. The second set of keys are the Database Master Keys, stored per database, if you’ve created one. You can back those up with the BACKUP MASTER KEY command, which you can read more about here. Finally, you can use the keys to create certificates and other keys – those should also be backed up. Read more about those here. Anyway, the important part here is the backup.   I am trying to create a backup of my website for free. I just want to have a backup of my website, including not only all files and the configuration but also the databases. I mean, a full backup. If it can be done automatically, it would be better. I feel there are better ways than using the cpanel to achieve that (actually, I believe sometimes web hosters does not have any cpanel). I read the following on how to do it: Automatically mirror the entire contents and configuration of your main server to a secondary backup server on a completely separate network in a different data centre. Use RSync, FXP, cPanel voodoo, or whatever method you wish to automate syncing. That is why I installed Rsync Daemon which is an alternative to SSH for remote backups. I configured it but the test went wrong. • Ghosting Program for Ubuntu 12.10

  I am looking to figure out how to set up a mass backup system for a computer network (of about 25) and am looking for a ghosting program that makes an image of the entire system for backup/recovery purposes. While clonezilla would work.. you have to manually boot us the CD for it. I am looking for a program that runs INSIDE Ubuntu that sends a system image backup off to the network server at set times, then when needed could also be used to burn the clone back to the machine. Another words- automatically and the only time I have to do anything to it is when I need to burn a backup BACK to a 'crapped' machine. Any ideas?

• Is it possible to boot without mounting /home?

  I want to backup my /home partition on /dev/sda6 using partclone, a command line utility. To do so, I first have to unmount the partition that I want to backup. Most of the time, this is easy, but /home is used by so many processes that it can't be unmounted without first killing all those processes. So, the thing I'm looking for is a way to boot Ubuntu, without mounting /home, so I can back up the not-mounted /dev/sda6 partition. Is that possible? To be clear, it would be nice if this special boot could be 'one-time-only'. So I'm not looking for ways to change /etc/fstab in such way that /dev/sda6 won't be mounted. That's because that would require me to change /etc/fstab twice each time just to make a backup. I'm aware of the fact that there are other backup solutions available, such as deja-dup. I'd like to use partclone, though.

• Is there a way to tell .NET where to look for the user settings file?

  Basically multiple instances of our application will be launched but they need to have separate user settings. We currently have use "user settings" for that, and it works fine for a single instance (per windows user) but we would like to be able to launch multiple instances with say a settings path passed in via command line. Is there a way to do this with the built-in .NET settings or will we have to roll our own?
