• Ubuntu Software Centre is gone! How can I get it back?

  Right. I am having MAJOR issues. (It would be much appreciated if you would solve them for me! Check my profile for open questions...) Following an answerer... who sorry to say... didn't give a great answer because it was just a graphical way of doing what I had already done - suggested I purge a library. Turns out that library controlled the Advanced Packaging Tool (apt), Ubuntu Software Centre and the repositories. Not a great tool to mess with. While trying to purge the library, it came up with 'Removing MyUnity.. Removing x... Removing x... Removing Ubuntu Software Centre... Removing X... Removing apt..." I quickly recognized and force shut-down my system. But I guess it was too late. So... well, plainly put - how do I get it back?!

• Do out-of-office replies get sent to the return-path header?

  I always thought that the return-path header was used for bounced messages, so I have my email newsletter software setup to unsubscribe anyone whose email address replies back to the return-path email address. But recently some users started telling me their out-of-office replies where unsubscribing them. Do out-of-office replies get sent to the return-path on some email servers? I could check all emails to that address and see if they have the "message/delivery-status" content-type in one of the parts, but I wasn't sure if this was necessary.

• How come Win+R prompt can open Python when it's not in my path?

  When I use the run prompt in Windows XP Professional (Win+R), and type python.exe or python, it works and greets me with the python prompt. However, when I start a cmd window, and then type python.exe or python, it doesn't find it. This is what I expect, as the Python directory (for me, I:\Python31\) is not in my PATH. How come, then, that if I type python.exe in the Win+R prompt, it works? Edit: here is a partial output of SET, I removed most irrelevant entries, I'm not sure why is it useful, apart from the PATH variable which I already said doesn't include the Python directory. If you need a particular variable other than these, please ask. • Determing software estimates and tracking past estimates

  I know that this probably has as many answers as users here on SO, but software estimation always seemed like an esoteric science. Software developers don't have a magic book to refer to as exist in many other industries. I've been spending the last couple of days working on putting together some estimates for a bit of work that I am proposing for a freelance project that I am working on and am having trouble getting it down. I'm not experienced with any real software estimation practices and am trying to go from the gut based on my experience but also trying to be a little loose (not too loose though) on the estimates to leave me a bit of room to work. I read this blog entry http://blogs.popart.com/2007/07/what-scotty-from-star-trek-can-teach-us-about-managing-expectations/ that was linked to from SO and would like to start tracking my estimates at work as well even though I'm not really required to create estimates there. What tools or techniques would you recommend? Also, how much padding do you usually add in to a time estimate?

• Discussions on software architecture - Is StackOverflow appropriate place?

  Hi guys, I am using StackOverFlow for sometime, and its absolutely absolutely awesome for discussions on coding issues. But I don't see discussions on software architecture and designs. What I mean is, I don't see discussions where people put their design ideas and architecture of their software for discussions and ask for reviews and comments. So my question is, is StackOverFlow not the place for such discussions and is there any other place specialized for such discussions. (Like http://serverfault.com for system administrators or http://superuser.com). I am asking this question because, I am a beginner and am coding a piece of software for a course project and am too enthusiastic about it (and passionate too) and want to release it as OpenSource. And I want the code to be highly modular and highly extensible. But as a beginner I am not sure if the design I have comeup is good or not. So want to discuss it with people. • Licencing: release the same software with double licence

  In my free time, I develop (alone, sigh) a project, in particoular an application library. I've released it using GPL v3. At this time, this project has come very useful for a job. I'd like to release my OSS library toghether with the application using the same GPL v3 licence, with the exception that it can be linked for the specific application, or for the specific application vendor. AFAIK, the copyright owner can handle the entire source and licencing it, I did it; and probably the licence owner could cut&paste its own code, change its licence and use for other projects, isn't? But an GPL'ed library cannot be linked with a proprietary software, right? But software could be double-licenced, as MySQL does. So the question is: what should I do to allow the distribution of my GPL'ed library with a proprietary software, being the copyright owner?

• Software Protection: Shuffeling my application?

  Hi, I want to continue on my previous question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3007168/torrents-can-i-protect-my-software-by-sending-wrong-bytes Developer Art suggested to add a unique key to the application, to identifier the cracker. But JAB said that crackers can search where my unique key is located by checking for binary differences, if the cracker has multiple copies of my software. Then crackers change that key to make them self anonymous. That is true. Now comes the question: If I want to add a unique key, are there tools to shuffle (a kind of obfuscation) the program modules? So, that a binary compare would say that the two files are completely different. So they can't locate the identifier key. I'm pretty sure it is possible (maybe by replacing assembler blocks and make some jumps). I think it would be enough to make 30 to 40 shuffles of my software. Thanks

  I am part of a growing software project with at least 200 active developer in 10 locations. I would like to set up an on-line chat forum for developers because I think it would help to coordinate efforts. We have an email mailing list but I feel like some questions or announcements are too informal to send to everyone while mentioning it in a chat forum might be a useful community resource. I have never participated in a software project that used an on-line chat forum so I would like to hear about peoples experiences. I am particularly interested in technical issues: Use of IRC vs. alternative platforms; how to manage access, eg. for developers only, allowing users to participate; the value of requiring certain announcements to be made on the chat forum eg who is resolving broken builds etc. If I pitch the idea to the community I would like to have some good arguments why it would be a good idea and some prospective of its usefulness in other software projects.

What kinds of software you install on another partition? If you install software on another partition, do you install them on a dedicated partition to these software?   So far I had /Applications/play-1.2.5/ added to my $PATH variable. Now I'm working with 2.2.1, which I installed in /Applications/play-2.2.1 and changed in ~/.bash_profile (which is getting sourced at startup). However, when printing $PATH, 1.2.5 is somehow still around: mbp:~ user$ echo $PATH /usr/local/share/npm/bin:/Applications/play-2.2.1:/usr/local/heroku/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/Applications/play-1.2.5:/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/:/opt/X11/bin As far as I now, I only entered $PATH variables in .bash_profile, which looks like this: mbp:~ user$ cat .bash_profile source ~/.git-completion.bash ### Added by the Heroku Toolbelt export PATH="/usr/local/heroku/bin:$PATH" ### Play Framework export PATH="/Applications/play-2.2.1:$PATH" export PATH="/usr/local/share/npm/bin:$PATH" I'm also not sure where the XAMPP extension to the variable comes from. Perhaps this seems a little exotic, but it seems like a function that includes message calls or even method invocations on other objects could be automatically converted to a sequence diagram given that it is not hard to do manually. Similarly, when a sequence diagram is modified, based on the message name and type of message, should it not be possible to add a message or method to the calling object?

• Convert a Relative URL to an Absolute URL in Actionscript / Flex

  I am working with Flex, and I need to take a relative URL source property and convert it to an absolute URL before loading it. The specific case I am working with involves tweaking SoundEffect's load method. I need to determine if a file will be loaded from the local file system or over the network from looking at the source property, and the easiest way I've found to do this is to generate the absolute URL. I'm having trouble generating the absolute URL for sound effect in particular. Here were my initial thoughts, which haven't worked. Look for the DisplayObject that the Sound Effect targets, and use its loaderInfo property. The target is null when the SoundEffect loads, so this doesn't work. Look at FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication, at the url or loaderInfo properties. Neither of these are set, however. Look at the FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.systemManager.loaderInfo. This was also not set. The SoundEffect.as code basically boils down to var url:String = "mySound.mp3"; /*>> I'd like to convert the URL to absolute form here and tweak it as necessary <<*/ var req:URLRequest = new URLRequest(url); var loader:Loader = new Loader(); loader.load(req); Does anyone know how to do this? Any help clarifying the rules of how relative urls are resolved for URLRequests in ActionScript would also be much appreciated. edit I would also be perfectly satisfied with some way to tell whether the url will be loaded from the local file system or over the network. Looking at an absolute URL it would just be easy to look at the prefix, like file:// or http://.
