  • nagios wrongly reports packet loss

    Lately, on my nagios 3.2.3 install (CentOS5, monitoring ~ 300 hosts, 1150 services) has sdtarted to occasionally report high packet loss on 50-60 hosts at a time. Problem is it's bogus. Manual runs of ping (or its own check_ping binary) finds no fault with any of the affected hosts. The only possible cures I found so far are: run all the checks manually (they will succeed but it may act up again on next check) acknowledge and wait for the problem to go away (may take several ours) I suspect (but have no particular reason other than single rescheduled checks succeeding) that the problem may lay with all the checks being mass scheduled together - in which case introducing some jitter in the scheduling (how?) might help. Or it may be something completely different. Ideas, anyone?

File "<string>", line 1, in bind socket.error: (98, 'Address already in use') This seems normal, lets see what has that socket: # netstat -untap | grep 12351 {no output} # grep 12351 /proc/net/tcp {no output} # lsof | grep 12351 {no output} # fuser -n tcp 12351 {no output, repeating the python test fails again} # nc localhost 12351 {no output} # nmap localhost 12351 {shows port closed} Other high ports work fine (eg 12352 works) Is there something magic about this port? Is there somewhere else I can look? Where does python find out that socket is in use that netstat doesnt know about? Any other way I can find out what/if that socket is?

    For 3 days now I've been unable to boot into my Windows 7 partition, and all my research has been to no avail. I'm hoping someone here has more ideas on how to fix this. When I boot up now, I get the black screen with BCD error that says theres no valid file system or it may be corrupt (pardon my lack of detail, no copy/paste is available then). When I boot with the Windows 7 disc and go into repair tools, no operating system is found, and attempting to automatically repair the problem fails with Unknown Operating System (Unknown Disk) or something similar. When I drop into the command prompt, I am able to see and navigate my C:\ drive without issue. I attempt to use bootrec: C:\> bootrec /ScanOS Finds C:\Windows as a system partition. C:\> bootrec /RebuildBCD Fails with volume does not contain a recognized file system. please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. So then I attempt to fix the bootsector: C:\> bootsect /nt60 C: /force Which completes successfully (sorry, no output..) Upon rebooting, I have the same problem. I've also tried all of the above after making my Windows partition active: C:\> diskpart DISKPART> select disk 1 DISKPART> select partition 1 DISKPART> active DISKPART> exit Then bootrec as above, both with and without a reboot after the DISKPART commands. Then I've also tried rebuilding the BCD store by hand: set systemdrive=C: set tempbcd=C:\boot\bcd.temp set tempfile=C:\boot\temp.txt bcdedit -createstore %tempbcd% bcdedit.exe -store %tempbcd% -create {bootmgr} -d "Windows Boot Manager" bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -create -d "Windows Vista" -application osloader>%tempfile% set /p winvistaguid= <%tempfile% set winvistaguid=%winvistaguid:~10,38% bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -set %winvistaguid% osdevice partition=%systemdrive% bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -set %winvistaguid% device partition=%systemdrive% bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -set %winvistaguid% path \Windows\system32\winload.exe bcdedit -store %tempbcd% -set %winvistaguid% systemroot \Windows bcdedit -import %tempbcd% However on the import, I get my familiar friendly message: volume does not contain a recognized file system. please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted I'm at my wits end here, and I cannot understand why Windows refuses to see this as a valid install. When I list the disk/partition in DISKPART, it shows up as NTFS and "Healthy", and I can navigate the directory structure from DOS with no problems. I really, really do not want to reformat and reinstall. I know this problem can be solved!

  • Custom Extensions on Managed Chromebooks

    I am a developer looking for the best way to set up different schools with their own custom, private extensions (ie School A should be the only one with access to Extension A). Theoretically, I am aware that there are a few ways to get a custom, private extension pushed out on a domain: Host the .crx on a server and click "Specify a Custom App" in the management console. Create a Domain App by uploading a zip to the Chrome Web Store Upload the extension from my developer account to the Chrome Web Store and publish to a single "trusted tester," or make it unlisted Option (1), hosting the .crx, has not been working. I am not sure why, but the extension is simply not pushing out. I link directly to the crx file, which has the right ID and MIME type, still, no dice. If anyone has any tips or suggestions for getting this to work, I would love to hear them! Option (2), having the school create a domain app, seems a bit inefficient because it requires all schools to upload their own zip. So essentially I would have to email a zip file to the school, and have them publish it. All updates to the extension will also require a similar process, so this doesn't seem ideal. I doubt that option (3) would work. If I published to the admin as a "trusted tester", I don't think that the other people in the domain would be able to access it. If it is unlisted, I do not know how an admin could find it in the Chrome Web Store dialog. Also, I would rather avoid security through obscurity. Has anyone had success with hosting the extension and using the Specify a Custom App feature? Any other suggestions for getting a Custom Extension pushed out by the management console?     Seems like this is broken again (http://serverfault.com/questions/177268/ssrs-report-unable-to-load-client-print-control and SQL 2008 SP2 RsClientPrint ActiveX - "Unable to load client print control"). We updated all of our Windows 7 clients last Friday and it looks like the mighty "Unable to load client print control" has returned since then. Anyone aware of possible problems with the latest batch of Windows Updates?

  • Windows 7 wifi reports "no network access" and "no internet access" but connects in fedora

    I am running windows 7 home basic (64bit) on a Acer 5742G laptop with Atheos wifi adapter in it. Yesterday, I hiberneted my computer as I always do and up untill then the wifi was working fine. When I booted my computer up again today I started having a strange problem: It detects my wifi but after connecting to it, it keeps on oscillating between states of no network access and no internet access. I can't connect to anything (the internet or my router). I tried to reset my internet protocol stack using this fixit file. I also tried to uninstall and reinstall my network driver. Neither helped. I am using the same laptop's fedora installation right now and the wifi is working perfectly fine. Please help. Edit To add additional details, I have Microsoft Security essentials as my antivirus software and I haven't messed with the firewall or the router configurations.

    On an Ubuntu VM I ran: sudo nmap -sP 192.168.0.* This returned: Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2010-12-28 22:46 PST Host 192.168.0.0 is up (0.00064s latency). Host 192.168.0.1 is up (0.00078s latency). Host 192.168.0.2 is up (0.00011s latency). . . . Host 192.168.0.254 is up (0.00068s latency). Host 192.168.0.255 is up (0.00066s latency). The problem is I only have 4 live machines on 192.168.0.* so why did nmap report every ip in the subnet has a live host? The ip address of the Ubuntu machine is 192.168.28.131 From this VM I can ping the live systems on my internal subnet 192.168.0.* and get the expected response. And if I ping a machine that doesn't exist I can get no response as expected.

    I have Apache 2.2, and it's got modaspdotnet installed - the 2.2 version. I followed the advice at Configuring ASP.NET MVC2 on Apache 2.2 using mod_aspdotnet, and the server works basically very well. However, I'm trying to create custom extensions (e.g. file.customname, instead of file.aspx), similar to how Apache/PHP/htaccess can handle this. (I think it's mod_rewrite or .htaccess, forgotten which now!) What would I do to get these custom file types (all serving .NET files) working? The extensions are given custom names by me, simply for testing purposes This is a tourism site [a testing one, btw], and it's working OK on localhost for basic pages, but I wanted to know how to do this. How would I go about this? I've had a look on Google etc. but custom HTTP handlers was all I could really find! Thanks

  • Video driver reports 8-bit color depth after Windows Update

    Windows Update pushed out a new video driver for the Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family. One HP 6730b laptop was updated from 8.15.10.1872 to 8.15.10.2021. After the update the color depth is reported as 8-bit even if the setting is 32-bit. This means that Areo effects are disabled. Downgrading to 8.15.10.1872 did not help. Is there any way to force the video driver to report 32-bit color depth?
