  • Batch add/import of a list of users to a group in Active Directory?

    We have two lists of users (about 1000 each) that we need to add to groups in Active Directory (Windows Server 2003...one list will be in one group, one in the other). All the users currently exist in the directory, but we just need to assign them properly. Is there an easy way to do this without scripting? If not, can it be scripted with Ruby, Perl or Python? Thanks!

  • Accessing files in a directory without x-permission?

    I am having a bit of trouble understanding what the execute permission means for directories. Do I understand it correctly that anything in a directory for which a user does not have x-rights is inaccessible even if the things inside the directory gives specific rights to the user? Or will the user still have direct access to the things in the directory, but simply cannot list what is in the directory? (What I am really trying to understand is how safe a directory is from access from other users if they do not have x-permission for it.)

    I do have a third party product (Jira) that has Active Directory integration via LDAP. I want to enable Jira administrators to edit group memberships and have them syncronized inside Active Directory. This currently works but I needed to use a Domain Administrator service account in order to do this. The question is how can I do this without giving the entire Domain Administrator permission to the service account.

  • Why should I prune old objects from Active Directory?

    What is the point of pruning old objects from Active Directory, especially computer accounts? If a computer is wiped or destroyed, then the stale computer account doesn't pose any security risk because it can't be used any more. And I can't imagine that stale objects affect performance very much, because if they aren't being changed then they aren't being replicated. So, what is the real motivation to keep Active Directory clean of stale objects?

  • SQL SERVER – Installing SQL Server Data Tools and SSRS

    This example is from the Beginning SSRS by Kathi Kellenberger. Supporting files are available with a free download from the www.Joes2Pros.com web site. If you have installed SQL Server, but are missing the Data Tools or Reporting Services Double-click the SQL Server 2012 installation media. Click the Installation link on the left to view the Installation options. Click the top link New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation. Follow the SQL Server Setup wizard until you get to the Installation Type screen. At that screen, select Add features to an existing instance of SQL Server 2012. Click Next to move to the Feature Selection page. Select Reporting Services – Native and SQL Server Data Tools. If the Management Tools have not been installed, go ahead and choose them as well. Continue through the wizard and reboot the computer at the end of the installation if instructed to do so. Configure Reporting Services If you installed Reporting Services during the installation of the SQL Server instance, SSRS will be configured automatically for you. If you install SSRS later, then you will have to go back and configure it as a subsequent step. Click Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2012 > Configuration Tools > Reporting Services Configuration Manager > Connect on the Reporting Services Configuration Connection dialog box. On the left-hand side of the Reporting Services Configuration Manager, click Database. Click the Change Database button on the right side of the screen. Select Create a new report server database and click Next. Click through the rest of the wizard accepting the defaults. This wizard creates two databases: ReportServer, used to store report definitions and security, and ReportServerTempDB which is used as scratch space when preparing reports for user requests. Now click Web Service URL on the left-hand side of the Reporting Services Configuration Manager. Click the Apply button to accept the defaults. If the Apply button has been grayed out, move on to the next step. This step sets up the SSRS web service. The web service is the program that runs in the background that communicates between the web page, which you will set up next, and the databases. The final configuration step is to select the Report Manager URL link on the left. Accept the default settings and click Apply. If the Apply button was already grayed out, this means the SSRS was already configured. This step sets up the Report Manager web site where you will publish reports. You may be wondering if you also must install a web server on your computer. SQL Server does not require that the Internet Information Server (IIS), the Microsoft web server, be installed to run Report Manager. Click Exit to dismiss the Reporting Services Configuration Manager dialog box. Tomorrow’s Post Tomorrow’s blog post will show how to create your first report using the Report Wizard.   • c# Windows Service not appearing in services list after install

    I've created a windows service in c#, using Visual Studio 2008 I pretty much followed this: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/dotnet/simplewindowsservice.aspx I created a setup project, as instructed to in the article, and ran it... it installs my service to c:\program files\product etc.... however, it does not then appear in the services list.. What am i missing?

  • Reporting Services as PDF through WebRequest in C# 3.5 "Not Supported File Type"

    I've inherited a legacy application that is supposed to grab an on the fly pdf from a reporting services server. Everything works fine up until the point where you try to open the pdf being returned and adobe acrobat tells you: Adobe Reader could not open 'thisStoopidReport'.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged(for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). I've done some initial troubleshooting on this. If I replace the url in the WebRequest.Create() call with a valid pdf file on my local machine ie: @"C:temp/validpdf.pdf") then I get a valid PDF. The report itself seems to work fine. If I manually type the URL to the reporting services report that should generate the pdf file I am prompted for user authentication. But after supplying it I get a valid pdf file. I've replace the actual url,username,userpass and domain strings in the code below with bogus values for obvious reasons. All documentation I have seen refers to .NET or Java solutions, I was in doubt whether PHP can be used as access is performed using SOAP. I have found no further information about this, I assume the answer is yes, but wonder why there is not a single reference to this being possible - all solutions seem to be .NET Any suggestions?     Documentation says: The Grails team discourages the embedding of core application logic inside controllers, as it does not promote re-use and a clean separation of concerns. I have one API controller and a few Groovy classes in src/groovy folder. Those classes just implements my application logic so actions in API controller works in this way: //index page def index = { render new IndexApi().index(params) as JSON } I'm curious - is there any reason to move my application logic from plain groovy classes into services ?
