• MS Build Script accepting a list or collection of project names to build and deploy

  I want to create a MS Build script (executed by way of TFS Build Server) that will accept a list of project names that need to be built, unit tested and deployed. The reason is that I want one script to serve many 'like' structured solutions. All the solutions are SOA in nature and share the same framework, project structure and deployment requirements. I've done this in Nant and acheived great success out of having one build file serving 4 solutions - it just accepted a list of web project names to compile and deploy to our test/uat environments. What is the syntax to cycle through a collection of project names suppled as params via MS Build?

• Sporadic name resolution failure happening on web service call

  One of our wcf service applications calls a seperate third party web service to submit information. We are getting the following error every so often, but not all the time: System.Net.WebException: The remote name could not be resolved: 'ws.examplesite.net' at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetRequestStream() at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.Invoke(String methodName, Object[] parameters) The wierd thing is that after the error happens, we can hit "Submit" again a second later and it will go through just fine. We have checked and double checked with our network guys and they have confirmed that DNS is correct, and they have done multiple nslookups in a row to confirm. This is happening in all environments (dev, test and prod). We use the third party test and prod urls, and it is happening when we point to both. Does anyone have any other trouble shooting techniques for this or any reason this would happen? Much thanks, ~Ansley

  Hey all! I had a quick question about Django URL configuration, and I guess REGEX as well. I have a small configuration application that takes in environments and artifacts in the following way: url(r'^env/(?P<env>\w+)/artifact/(?P<artifact>\w+)/$', 'config.views.ipview', name="bothlist"), Now, this works fine, but what I would like to do is have it be able to have additional parameters that are optional, such as a verbose mode or no formating mode. I know how to do this just fine in the views, but I can't wrap my head around the regex. the call would be something like GET /env/<env>/artifact/<artifact>/<opt:verbose>/<opt:noformat> Any help would be appreciated, thanks! -Shawn

• Django exclude(**kwargs) help

  Hey guys/gals! I had a question for you, something that I can't seem to find the solution for... Basically, I have a model called Environment, and I am passing all of them to a view, and there are particular environments that I would like to exclude. Now, I know there is a exclude function on a queryset, but I can't seem to figure out how to use it for multiple options... For example, I tried this but it didn't work: kwargs = {"name": "env1", "name": "env2"} envs = Environment.objects.exclude( kwards ) But the only thing that it will exclude is the last "name" value in the list of kwargs. I understand why it does that now, but I still can't seem to exclude multiple objects with one command. Any help is much appreciated! Shawn

• IPC::Open3 Fails Running Under Apache

  I have a module that uses IPC::Open3 (or IPC::Open2, both exhibit this problem) to call an external binary (bogofilter in this case) and feed it some input via the child-input filehandle, then reads the result from the child-output handle. The code works fine when run in most environments. However, the main use of this module is in a web service that runs under Apache 2.2.6. And under that environment, I get the error: Cannot fdopen STDOUT: Invalid argument This only happens when the code runs under Apache. Previously, the code constructed a horribly complex command, which included a here-document for the input, and ran it with back-ticks. THAT worked, but was very slow and prone to breaking in unique and perplexing ways. I would hate to have to revert to the old version, but I cannot crack this.

Also, Curious if anyone has configured their Zend Framework to automatically switch from production, staging, test.. etc based on Host information.. example.. if (hostname = 'prodServer') ... blah if (hostname = 'testServer') ... blah I'm new to Zend but I typically configure my projects to automatically switch run environments based on the host information. thanks

  Hello, Consider the situation below. Two tables (A & B), in two environments (DEV & TEST), with records in those tables. If you look the content of the tables, you understand that functionnal data are identical. I mean except the PK and FK values, the name Roger is sill connected to Fruit & Vegetable. In DEV environment : Table A 1 Roger 2 Kevin Table B (italic field is FK to table A) 1 1 Fruit 2 1 Vegetable 3 2 Meat In TEST environment : Table A 4 Roger 5 Kevin Table B (italic field is FK to table A) 7 4 Fruit 8 4 Vegetable 9 5 Meat I'm looking for a SQL Data Compare tool which will tell me there is no difference in the above case. • Include params/request information in Rails logger?

  Hi everyone, I'm trying to get some more information into my Rails logs, specifically the requested URI or current params, if available (and I appreciate that they won't always be). However I just don't seem able to. Here's what I've done so far: #config/environments/production.rb config.logger = Logger.new(config.log_path) config.log_level = :error config.logger.level = Logger::ERROR #config/environment.rb class Logger def format_message(level, time, progname, msg) "**********************************************************************\n#{level} #{time.to_s(:db)} -- #{msg}\n" end end So I can customize the message fine, yet I don't seem to be able to access the params/request variables here. • vs 2010 Deployment without Web Deploy

  with vs 2008 I always used Web Deployment Project to build to three different environments. It is maybe not the best solution, since I still have to xcopy the built files to the server, but it is simple. now with vs 2010 it looks promising, but It looks also complicated. My hosting doesn't have Web Deploy, the newest feature and the flagship technology for deployment in vs2010. My question how can I just build for each environment and copy the files over to the server. Using the Build Deployment Package will create the zip file and when I extract it, it will output so many files and confusing folder structure. Anyone has suggestion?

Somethig I tried: This error is solved if I change my project file format "MSBuild (Visual Studio 2008)" to "MonoDevelop 1.0" (Preferences Load/Save Project file format to use when creating new projects) There is no problem when building console app project.   I am trying to properly extract methods definitions that are generated by comtypes for Com Interfaces using a regex. Furthermore some of them are blank which causes even more problems for me. • Rails Action and Fragment Caching during Development?

  I'm just starting to get into Rails caching and am wondering how to test whether or not caching is working in my development environment. I have set these two config variables for both the development (temporarily) and production environments: config.action_controller.perform_caching = true config.action_controller.page_cache_directory = File.join(RAILS_ROOT, 'public', 'cache') And my controller basically looks like this (using the resource_controller gem): class EventsController < Spree::BaseController resource_controller caches_page :index index.response do |format| format.html format.xml { render :xml => @collection.to_xml } end # ... end If I do that, I get these files: public/cache/events.html public/cache/events.xml But when I change caches_page to caches_action, I don't see any generated files and am not sure how to tell if the response has been cached. What do I need to know to know that this is working? I've read the docs and related, the rails caching guides, the railscast, and a few other docs, but I'm still wondering where everything is stored. • Best practices for managing limited client licenses/login

  I have a multi-user software solution (containing different applications, i.e. EXEs) that should allow only a limited number of concurrent users. It's designed to run in an intranet. I dont have a really good, satisfactory solution to the problem of counting the client licenses yet. The key requirements are: Multiple instances (starts) of the same application (= process) should count as only one client licence Starting different applications of the software solution should also count as only one (the same) client licence Application crash should not lead to orphaned used licences The above should work also for Terminal Server environments (all clients same IP, but different install folders) I'm looking for estabilished patterns, solutions, tips for managing used client licenses. Specific hints for the above sitaution are also welcome.

  I'm looking to make a browser add-on as widely and easily distributable as possible. Is there a set of wrapper addons for all the major browsers that will let me write one piece of code and it can execute in any of the environments? I don't need anything fancy, just DOM and some ajax stuff. Something along the lines of greasemonkey for IE, FF, and Chrome would be nice. In the same vein, is there a way to link to my script so that it prompts for an install of greasemonkey (if it isn't installed) and then leads the script?

• Reference app relative virtual paths in .css file

  Assume I have an "images" folder directory under the root of my application. How can I, from within a .css file, reference an image in this directory using an ASP.NET app relative path. Example: When in development, the path of ~/Images/Test.gif might resolve to /MyApp/Images/Test.gif while, in production, it might resolve to /Images/Test.gif (depending on the virtual directory for the application). I, obviously, want to avoid having to modify the .css file between environments. I know you can use Page.ResolveClientUrl to inject a url into a control's Style collection dynamically at render time. I would like to avoid doing this.

• zlib memory usage / performance. With 500kb of data.

  Is zLib Worth it? Are there other better suited compressors? I am using an embedded system. Frequently, I have only 3MB of RAM or less available to my application. So I am considering using zlib to compress my buffers. I am concerned about overhead however. The buffer's average size will be 30kb. This probably won't get compressed by zlib. Anyone know of a good compressor for extremely limited memory environments? However, I will experience occasional maximum buffer sizes of 700kb, with 500kb much more common. Is zlib worth it in this case? Or is the overhead too much to justify? My sole considerations for compression are RAM overhead of algorithm and performance at least as good as zlib.

• Continous Build Integration with SourceSafe and Batch Files

  I want to create a continuous build integration system for .NET using just Windows batch files and Visual Source Safe. I've come up with the following batch file so far - set ssdir=\\xxxx\vss cd d:\mydir "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual SourceSafe\ss.exe" diff "$/sourcedir" -R -Q > diffout.txt This will spit out a file containg lines like "SourceSafe files different from local files" when a change has been made. My challenge is to figure out if those lines are in the file, then do a get and kick off MSBuild if they are. I'd then schedule the batch file to run every 10 minutes or so. Anyone got any thoughts on how to do that? Or any other ways of doing continuous build integration without downloading a complicated build automation system? Update: Happy to use cscript or powershell too, though not really familiar with those environments. My main aim is to avoid installing 3rd party software

• Unit Testing in QTestLib - running single test / tests in class / all tests

  I'm just starting to use QTestLib. I have gone through the manual and tutorial. Although I understand how to create tests, I'm just not getting how to make those tests convenient to run. My unit test background is NUnit and MSTest. In those environments, it was trivial (using a GUI, at least) to alternate between running a single test, or all tests in a single test class, or all tests in the entire project, just by clicking the right button. All I'm seeing in QTestLib is either you use the QTEST_MAIN macro to run the tests in a single class, then compile and test each file separately; or use QTest::qExec() in main() to define which objects to test, and then manually change that and recompile when you want to add/remove test classes. I'm sure I'm missing something. I'd like to be able to easily: Run a single test method Run the tests in an entire class Run all tests Any of those would call the appropriate setup / teardown functions.

• Run another version of Python using virtualenv

  I apologize in advance if the question is dummy ,i use Python 3.2.3 on Windows xp ,now i need Python3.3.2 , but i can't remove Python 3.2.3 because i have many codes and packages need to be run by it. I installed virtualenv to run two versions of Python in two different environments , but after that i didn't know what to do to run a code using Python 3.3.2 , here what i did: C:\>virtualenv.exe env1 C:\>env1\Scripts\activate now i don't know what to do after a folder was created its name env1 , i downloaded Python 3.3.2 and installed it in the same folder (env1) , is that correct ? then i try the following: (env1) C:\>python3.3.2 I got the following : 'python3.3.2' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. also i tried : (env1) C:\>python python33 I got the following: python: can't open file 'python33': [Errno 2] No such file or directory As i mentioned , i stuck at this point , any help will be very appreciated. • ASP.NET Development Server - Empty webResource.axd after conversion from 2.0 to 3.5

  I have moved a project from asp.net 2.0 to 3.5. The original project was using the atlas ajax extensions so I have modified the code to use the built in ajax features in 3.5. When running the project within the dev environemnt (VS2008 on Vista Business SP1) and using the asp.net dev server I receive javascript errors such as WebForm_PostBackOptions which point to a missing handler/module. If I deploy the project and run it stand alone within IIS or if I use Fiddler2 while running in VS2008 I do not see the errors and fiddler shows that the axd files are being downloaded correctly. Also deploying to a 2003 server does not show any issues. I could just carry on and forget this as it works when deployed but I would like to understand what is happening. Has anyone got an ideas as to what is going on here and how to get the same results accross all environments?

• How do I detect the environment in Salesforce?

  I am integrating our back end systems with Salesforce using the web services. I have production and stage environments running on different URLs. I need to be able to have the endpoint of the web service call be different depending on whether the code is running in the production or sandbox Salesforce instance. How do I detect the environment. Currently I am considering looking up a user to see if there user name ends in 'devsandbox' as I have been unable to identify a system object that I can query to get the environment. Further clarification: The location I need to determine this is within the Apex code that is invoked when I select a button in Salesforce. My custom controller needs to know if it running in the production or sandbox Salesforce environment.

• Can somebody explain in a few sentences how these technologies relate: Flex, Flash, Air, ActionScrip

  I've read about each of these but I still don't understand how they all inter-operate, which are competing technologies, or even really what each of them is distinctly. Flash, Air, Flex... Are these all "containers"/JVM-like runtime environments, in which ActionScript code runs? SWF,FLV,AIR... Are these competing file formats which a Flash, Air or Flex runtime environment executes? ActionScript is a C-like language which compiles to SWF, FLV or AIR files? Sorry, with all the marketing around these terms, some of which are used interchangeably, I am quite lost. Suppose I wanted to write an AIR application... what would that entail? Writing ActionScript, compiling it to a SWF, and then installing the AIR runtime to execute it? How's that different than Flash? If I want to play AIR applications do I need a separate AIR runtime or does Flash execute AIR apps?
