  I have disk image with 2 partitions: Partition 1 has cramfs file system (read only). This partition contains all system files of the OS Partition 2 has ext3 file system. This partition has only configuration files that may be changed. How can I install GRUB1 boot loader on MBR. I tried to copy first 446 bytes of my hard disk and copy GRUB files to the /boot directory on the 1st (cramfs) partition. I cannot use grub-install because I have disk image and not disk itself. Any ideas?

I'll have to be very careful because no one can press the restart button for me if anything goes wrong. Have you ever remotely installed Linux? Which way would you recommend? I was lucky enough that everything went smoothly :)

  I've installed libevent on my server in the directory root/data/ and have i'm about to install memcached with ./configure –with-lib-event=/data/; make; make install However, after running a bit I get this error saying i'm pointing to the wrong directory for libevent. checking for libevent directory... configure: error: libevent is required. You can get it from http://www.monkey.org/~provos/libevent/ If it's already installed, specify its path using --with-libevent=/dir/ make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.   i am trying to do an unattended install via php for several packages but every time when the dependencies come up it aborts instead of forcing the answer to be yes. • Terminal Server Install -- Add/Remove Program Message on NonAdministrator Machines

  First time poster... My company uses terminal services for one of our remote offices. Data is kept on a different server. OS is Windows Server 2003. Last week, they needed to purchase a program and have it installed on terminal server, which was done. An administrator session was started, the TS was put into install mode and the program was installed. The TS was then put back into execute mode. The install did not require a reboot. Since then, when any user who does not have administrator privileges initiates a remote session and logs in they get a security message that says "Add / Remove programs has been restricted. Please contact your system administrator." The only option is to click OK, which everyone does and after that there are no issues. Anyone have any idea why this is happening and how to fix? Thanks!

• Why does my .NET 4 application know .NET 4 is not installed

  I developed an application that targeted .NET 4 the other day and XCOPY-installed it to a Windows XP machine. I had told the owner of the machine that they would need to install .NET Framework 4 to run my app and he told me he did (not a reliable source). When I ran the application I was presented with a message box that said this app requires .NET Framework 4, would I like to install it? Clicking the Yes button took me to the Microsoft web site and a few clicks later .NET 4 was installed, and the application successfully launched. Now I normally don't develop applications that target the latest version of .NET, I always target the lowest version I can (what features do I really need?). So this was my first .NET 4 app (and I only targeted 4 because it used a library that did). In the past, XCOPY-installing .NET applications to a machine that didn't have the correct version of .NET installed resulted in the application simply crashing on startup with no useful information presented to the user. Was it built into my app because I targeted .NET X? Was it something already installed on the target machine? I love the feature, I just want to know precisely how to leverage it in the future.

  Ok, so the initial search in StackOverflow shows nothing related for this question. So here it goes: Let's pretend for a moment that you're just getting started in a career in computer programming. Let's say that, for whatever reason, you decide to use the .Net framework as a basis for your programming. Let's also say that you've been exposed to some programming background, but not one in .Net, so it seems foreign to you at first. And lastly, you don't have the benefit of 25 years of exposure to the Win32 API, which explains why it seems so foreign to you when you start looking at it. So the questions are: What is a comprehensive overview of what .Net is? It appears to be a combination of a runtime environment, a set of languages, a common set of libraries, and perhaps a few other things...so it's about as clear as mud. Specifically, what are the key components to .Net? What is the easiest way to understand .Net programming with regard to available APIs? Which language would best suit beginning programming out of the "stock" languages that Microsoft has to offer? (C++, C#, VB, etc.) What are some differences between .Net programming and programming in a procedural language (aka Pascal, Modula, etc.) What are some differences between .Net programming and programming in a "traditional" object-oriented language? (aka Smalltalk, Java, Python, Ruby, etc.) As I currently understand it, the CLR provides a foundation for all of the other languages to run on. What are some of the inherent limitations of the CLR?   We have deployed a .net 4 asp.net site on IIS 6.0. Default.aspx is configured as one of the default document. When we access the site using the following url http://testsite We expect it to render http://testsite/Default.aspx But instead we get 404 Not found error. We did not had this issue when it was deployed on .Net 2.0. Only thing that has changed on the server is that we use .Net 4 instead of .Net 2.

  You can built sample application on ASP.NET MVC 3 for deploying it to your hosting first. To try it out first put it to web server where ASP.NET MVC 3 installed. In this posting I will tell you what files you need and where you can find them. Here are the files you need to upload to get application running on server where ASP.NET MVC 3 is not installed. Also you can deploying ASP.NET MVC 3 web application to server where ASP.NET MVC 3 is not installed like this example: you can change reference to System.Web.Helpers.dll to be the local one so it is copied to bin folder of your application. First file in this list is my web application dll and you don’t need it to get ASP.NET MVC 3 running. All other files are located at the following folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET Web Pages\v1.0\Assemblies\ If there are more files needed in some other scenarios then please leave me a comment here. And… don’t forget to convert the folder in IIS to application. While developing an application locally, this isn’t a problem. But when you are ready to deploy your application to a hosting provider, this might well be a problem if the hoster does not have the ASP.NET MVC assemblies installed in the GAC. Fortunately, ASP.NET MVC is still bin-deployable. If your hosting provider has ASP.NET 3.5 SP1 installed, then you’ll only need to include the MVC DLL. If your hosting provider is still on ASP.NET 3.5, then you’ll need to deploy all three. It turns out that it’s really easy to do so. Also, ASP.NET MVC runs in Medium Trust, so it should work with most hosting providers’ Medium Trust policies. It’s always possible that a hosting provider customizes their Medium Trust policy to be draconian. Deployment is easy when you know what to copy in archive for publishing your web site on ASP.NET MVC 3 or later versions. What I like to do is use the Publish feature of Visual Studio to publish to a local directory and then upload the files to my hosting provider. If your hosting provider supports FTP, you can often skip this intermediate step and publish directly to the FTP site. The first thing I do in preparation is to go to my MVC web application project and expand the References node in the project tree. Select the aforementioned three assemblies and in the Properties dialog, set Copy Local to True. Now just right click on your application and select Publish. This brings up the following Publish wizard Notice that in this example, I selected a local directory. • Migrating a blog from Orchard 0.5 to 0.9

  My personal blog still runs on Orchard 0.5, because the theme that I used to build it is not yet available for more recent versions, but it is still very important for me to know that I can migrate all my content and comments to a new version at any time. Fortunately, Nick Mayne has been consistently shipping a BlogML module a few days after each of the Orchard versions shipped. Because the module gallery for each version is behind a different URL and is kept alive even after a new one shipped, it is very easy to install the module for both versions. Step 0: Setting up the migration environment In order to do the migration, I made a local copy of the production site on my laptop (data included: I'm using SQL CE) and I also created a new local site with a fresh install of Orchard 0.9. Step 1: Enable the gallery feature on both versions From the admin UI, go to Features and locate the Gallery feature under "Packaging". Enable it. You may now click on "Browse Gallery" on the 0.5 instance and "Modules" under "Gallery" for 0.9: Step 2: Install the BlogML module on both versions From the gallery page, locate the BlogML module and install it. Do it on both versions. Then go to Features and enable BlogML under "Content Publishing". Do it on both versions. Step 3: Export from the 0.5 version Click on "Manage Blog" then on "Export using BlogML" from the 0.5 version. The module then informs you of the path of the saved file: Step 4: Import into the 0.9 version From the 0.9 version, click "Import under "Blogs". Click the button to browse to the file that you just saved from 0.5. Then click "Upload file and Import" Step 5: Copy the 0.5 media folder into 0.9 Copy the contents of the 0.5 version's media folder into the media folder of the 0.9 version. Once that is done, you can delete the "Default/Blog Exports" subfolder. Step 6: Configure the target blog Click "Manage Blog", then "Blog Properties" and restore any properties you had on the source blog. For me, it was the title and URL as well as to set the blog as the home page and show it on the main menu: Step 7: Republish the new site to the production server Once this is done and everything works locally, you are ready to publish to the production site. I use FTP. Note: this should work just as well for any couple of versions for which the BlogML module exists, and not just for 0.5 and 0.9.

First, what is the best way to pass the list data to the view? Pass the list in your model with a SelectList property that contains the data Pass the list in via ViewData How do I get a blank value in the DropDownList? Should I build it into the SelectList when I am creating it or is there some other means to tell the helper to auto create an empty value? Lastly, if for some reason there is a server side error and I need to redisplay the screen with the DropDownList, do I need to fetch the list values again to pass into the view model? This data is not maintained between posts (at least not when I pass it via my view model) so I was going to just fetch it again (it's cached). Am I going about this correctly?

  In our current ASP.Net Webforms application we have several composite/template server controls that only exist for a common look and feel. For example, we have a panel control that has a title, a place for buttons related to the contents of the panel, and of course the contents. How is this best accomplished in MVC? RenderPartial doesn't get done what I need here. Should I still be using the same controls, but just on a view page? These controls don't really do anything on postback, they are only there for a common look and feel.

  I have an ASP.NET 3.5 page with an update panel and history enabled. It works fine when I perform async postbacks but I get problems when I want to perform a normal postback. The page load happens fine for the normal postback but then I get asynchronous page loads from the script manager which load the ajax history in. If I could have the ajax history not loading for the times I want to perform a normal postback then everything would be fine. Is there anyway to do this?

  I have single-thread windows form application written with VB.NET and targeting Framework 1.1. The software communicates with external boards through a serial interface, and it mainly consist of a state machine that run some tests, driven in a loop done with a Timer and an Interval of 50ms. The feedback on the user interface is done through some custom events raised during the tests. The problem that is driving me crazy is that the performance slightly decrease over time, and in particular after 1200/1300 test operations. The memory occupied does not increase over time, it is only the CPU that seems interested by this problem. The strange thing is that, targeting framework 2.0 and using the same identical code, I do not have this problem. I know that is difficult without looking at the code, but do you have suggestions how can I approach the problem?

  I am not starting an argumentative discussion here and this post is not about career development, but from the commercial point of view: If a company was using ASP.Net MVC as a main methodology to build their web sites and application. However, ASP.Net MVC takes more time to show a functional application than ASP.Net Web Forms, for example, building domain models would take some time which obviously can't be represented on a UI at that current stage. My question is, if a client wants to see a functional demo application (just a proof of concept) so he knows that the company he is dealing with is professional and capable of doing that. Would it be better to do that demo in ASP.Net Web Forms only to show the client, and then work on the real application using ASP.Net MVC? If not, what are the (quick) alternatives?, I mean, if we tell the client to wait till we have a working demo (by ASP.Net MVC) we may lose the client and the whole project opportunity.

  I'm just wondering, if I have an ASP.net Web Application, either WebForms or MVC, is there any situation where doing stuff asynchronously would make sense? The Web Server already handles threading for me in that it spins up multiple threads to handle requests, and most request processing is rather simple and straight forward. I see some use for when stuff truly is a) expensive and b) can be parallelized. but these are the minority cases (at least from what I've encountered). Is there any gain from async in the simple "Read some input, do some CRUD, display some output" scenario?

• VSTO is Free But Aspose is Speed

  I’ve taken over the completion, deployment, and maintenance of an ASP.NET Web site that generates Office documents using VSTO. VSTO’s a decent concept and works fine for small-scale scenarios like a desktop app or small intranet. However, with multiple simultaneous requests via ASP.NET, we found the Web server performance suffered badly. To spread out the server’s workload, I implemented MSMQ task queuing via a WCF Windows service.  That helped a lot. IIS didn’t drag with only one VSTO/Office instance running. But I  still found it taking too long to produce a single report. A nicely formatted VSTO Excel document was taking 45 minutes.  (The client  didn’t know any better and therefore considered 45 minutes tolerable.) On my own time, I pulled out an old copy of Aspose.Total for .NET. Within an hour, I had converted the VSTO Excel C# code to Aspose Cells code. The improvement was astonishing: Instead of the 45-minutes, the report took under a minute! I’ve pasted the client’s exact chat response after he tried the speedy Aspose version: “WWWWWOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Microsoft’s VSTO is a free product while the Aspose components cost $$$.  Certainly, it can be a tough call when budgets are tight. If you’re trying to convince the client to shell out for something more suitable for the application, get an eval version of Aspose.Total and offer a direct comparison demo.   Hi Experts, I am using asp.net 3.5 and C#. I want to send mail from asp.net, for that I have got some details from my hosting provider which are these: mail.MySite.net UserName Password But I am unable to send mail through these details, I have done the following changes in my web.config file: <system.net> <mailSettings> <smtp> <network host="mail.MySite.net" port="8080" userName="UserName" password="Password" /> </smtp> </mailSettings> </system.net> Also, at the code behind I am writing this function: MailMessage mail = new MailMessage("webmaster@mySite.net", "[email protected]"); mail.Subject = "Hi"; mail.Body = "Test Mail from ASP.NET"; mail.IsBodyHtml = false; SmtpClient smp = new SmtpClient(); smp.Send(mail); but I am getting error message as message sending failed. Please let me know what I am doing wrong and what I have to do to make it work fine. Thanks in advance.
