  • Unable to boot Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu

    - by Devendra
I have Windows 7 on my machine and then installed Ubuntu 12.04 using a live CD. I can see both Windows 7 and Ubuntu in the grub menu, but when I select Windows 7 it shows a black screen for about 2 seconds and the returns to the Grub menu. But if I select Ubuntu it's working fine. This week Microsoft is hosting the first edition of their annual TechReady conference. Even though TechReady is an internal conference, Microsoft invited us to present a not one but two sessions about some our recent work. We are particularly proud of the fact that one of those sessions is about our SO-Aware service registry. We see this as a recognition to the growing popularity of SO-Aware as the best Agile SOA governance solution in the Microsoft platform. Well, on Tuesday I had the opportunity...(read more)

  • WebCenter Spaces 11g - UI Customization

    - by john.brunswick
When developing on top of a portal platform to support an intranet or extranet, a portion of the development time is spent adjusting the out-of-box user templates to adjust the look and feel of the platform for your organization. Generally your deployment will not need to look like anything like the sites posted on http://cssremix.com/ or http://www.webcreme.com/, but will meet business needs by adjusting basic elements like navigation, color palate and logo placement. After spending some time doing custom UI development with WebCenter Spaces 11G I have gathered a few tips that I hope can help to speed anyone's efforts to quickly "skin" a WebCenter Spaces deployment. A detailed white paper was released that outlines a technique to quickly update the UI during runtime - http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/webcenter/pdf/owcs_r11120_cust_skins_runtime_wp.pdf. Customizing at "runtime" means using CSS and images to adjust the page layout and feel, which when creatively done can change the pages drastically. WebCenter also allows for detailed templates to manage the placement of major page elements like menus, sidebar, etc, but by adjusting only images and CSS we can end up with something like the custom solution shown below. view large image Let's dive right in and take a look at some tools to make our efforts more efficient.

On Linux, the Root user is equivalent to the Administrator user on Windows. However, while Windows has long had a culture of average users logging in as Administrator, you shouldn’t log in as root on Linux. Microsoft tried to improve Windows security practices with UAC – you shouldn’t log in as root on Linux for the same reason you shouldn’t disable UAC on Windows. What could be the reason not routing to MVC. Do we need to plug some extra dlls?

  • Improving performance for web scraping code

    - by Pankaj Upadhyay
I have a website in which the code scrapes other websites for getting the accurate data. While the code works good but there a decent lag in performance because the code firsts downloads the html stream from various sites(some times 9 websites), extracts the relative part and then renders the html page. What should I do to get an optimal performance. Should I change from shared hosting (godaddy) to my own server or it has nothing to do with my hosting and I need to make changes to my code?

  • How can an experienced web developer transition to desktop development?

    - by Craige
I'm a web developer, first and foremost. I've been programming for 5 or 6 years now, all of which has been web-based. I'm good at my job, both specifically as a web developer and as a programmer in general. I have decided recently that I would like to learn some desktop programming to to beef up my skill-set. My question is this: How can an experienced web developer transition to desktop development? To elaborate: I have always been a web-developer, and I can design and build web-applications without any problem. When it comes to sitting down with a to learn some desktop oriented programming, my problem isn't with any of the technical matters, but rather coming up with an idea to program. I draw a blank.

Today I found that my Redhat server has run out of hard disk space. • GRUB 2 problem after Mac OS X update

    - by vallllll
I have a MacBook Pro in dual boot Mac OS X / Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin). When I boot it I have a rEFIt menu, and I can chose between Mac OS X and Linux. A few days ago I have updated Mac OS X from 10.7 (Lion) to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) using a .dmg image provided by my company. Since then when I select Linux in rEFIt it says: No bootable device --insert boot disk and press any key I have tried going to rEFIt partitioning tool. This is what I got: As suggested in Mac OSX Mavericks update rEFIT broken I wanted to fix the issue the same way as AndrewM, but I don't have the option "MBR table must be updated". Then I booted on Ubuntu 12.04 CD, chose repair broken system, chose root patition /dev/sda6 as this is where my Ubuntu file system is. I got a shell, but I don't really know how to repair the poblem since if it was just Windows dual boot. A GRUB update would solve the issue, but here I don't know where the GRUB 2 is installed. Here are results from Parted, and it is a bit confusing for me as the Mac partition is the one with boot: As you can see the entry 1 is an EFI system partition and is the boot partition, so I wonder if I should install GRUB there or in sda6, which is the Ubuntu filesystem. I am not sure should I work on rEFIt shell or Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I don't remember where GRUB was before update. UPDATE: using same link above I have tried RoundSparrow hilltx answer and installed rEFInd, but the result is same.... still no bootable device when I select Linux. UPDATE 2: just used alternate CD again, mounted on /dev/sda6 and the ran update-grub. It seemed to wok and started listing all my kernels. But after rebooting several times still no bootable device when I select Linux in rEFInd. UDATE 3: Have tried to boot from Ubuntu cd and select "boot from first available filesystem. I got error and dropped to grub rescue shell. • Web standards or risk avoidance?

    - by Junior Dev
My company is building an App Engine application. The app encounters a bug (possibly due to an issue with App Engine itself, as per our research) on IE9, but it cannot be reliably reproduced and is experienced by a small percentage of users. The workaround is to force IE9 to use IE8 mode. As a lazy front end developer (who doesn't like CSS hacks, shims and polyfills) I think it's OK to at least try going back to IE9 mode and see what happens, while we're still in private beta. The senior engineer (being more pragmatic) would rather that we continue forcing IE9 users to use the older IE8 mode. Who is right?

  • Recommend good shared hosting [closed]

    - by Django Reinhardt
It seems that everyone has something bad to say about the "big" shared hosting sites like 1and1, HostGator, GoDaddy, etc. but what are the ones you've had GOOD experiences with? I'm going to focus this question on LAMP stacks, given that they're the most popular option for shared hosting, but if you have an especially good experience with a different stack. Good shared hosting should be: Competitively priced - But not at the expense of... Fully featured - Email, PHP, MySQL, but what else? Highly customizable - Do you have access to advanced features like being able to deliver static content? Up to date - Do they run PHP4 as standard, or do they run the latest version? Customer service - When you have a problem are they rude and unhelpful? Do they take ages to reply? So how about it? Who have YOU have a good experience with?
