• How can I get data off of a (probably) very corrupt drive?

  So, my younger brother wanted my help today. Apparently, he was helping a friend install Ubuntu to his laptop, and midway through the install (on a filled hard-drive with Windows 8, from the liveusb thing): 1) They realized that they had chosen "Erase and install" accidentally and decided the best course of action was to (in the middle of an install, remember) 2) Force shutdown the computer. After I had replaced my eyeballs back into their sockets, my bro asked if I could do anything about his friend's data, which he wanted back. This, however, drifts out of my normal comfort zone. I know this about the install: 1) It was on a fairly new Windows 8 laptop, so it had whatever filesystem it uses nowadays on the entire drive 2) They didn't choose the "zero out drive data" option 3) They stopped the install at some point (not sure if before or after wipe) I can imagine that it now has two corrupted filesystems on it (whatever Windows 8 was on and ext3) and that some of the data still exists (assuming it wasn't overwritten already). Is there anything that can be done for whatever data is left on the drive?

• Microsoft Researchers shows off best Touch Screen ever made. Better than Apple touch screens!

  All the touch devices we have in market today like iPads, iPhones, Samsung tablets and phones, etc.  have a very small issue – 100 milliseconds of lag. The lag is the amount of time a touch device takes to respond after you touch the device. The 100 milliseconds of lag may not be an issue when you are tapping and swapping the interface elements on a device, but they are apparent when you wing your finger around the screen faster. For example if you use any painting app, the lag is very obvious and screen responds slowly than an artist can paint with his finger. Researchers at Microsoft labs came out with a prototype of touch device that drastically cuts down the 100 milliseconds of lag time to just 1 millisecond. That’s 100 times faster than today’s touch screen devices. Check out the video embedded below for a demo of new touch screen. Over at TechCrunch, Chris Velazco says: The difference is staggering, especially when Dietz trots out the slow-motion footage. With the delay between touch input and screen response slashed by orders of magnitude, a device that sports the sort of super-low-latency Dietz envisions has the potential to feel far more (for lack of a better term) natural than its brethren. There’s zero delay when you slide a checker across a board, for example, and bringing that sort of instantaneous feedback to the many screens in our lives could help to bridge the gap between operating a bit of software and the feeling of interacting with objects.   It will be great boost to Microsoft’s tablet strategy if they succeed in bringing this research into mass market and allow it’s partners to use the technology on Windows 8 tablets.

• HOWTO Turn off SPARC T4 or Intel AES-NI crypto acceleration.

  Since we released hardware crypto acceleration for SPARC T4 and Intel AES-NI support we have had a common question come up: 'How do I test without the hardware crypto acceleration?'. Initially this came up just for development use so developers can do unit testing on a machine that has hardware offload but still cover the code paths for a machine that doesn't (our integration and release testing would run on all supported types of hardware anyway).  I've also seen it asked in a customer context too so that we can show that there is a performance gain from the hardware crypto acceleration, (not just the fact that SPARC T4 much faster performing processor than T3) and measure what it is for their application. With SPARC T2/T3 we could easily disable the hardware crypto offload by running 'cryptoadm disable provider=n2cp/0'.  We can't do that with SPARC T4 or with Intel AES-NI because in both of those classes of processor the encryption doesn't require a device driver instead it is unprivileged user land callable instructions. Turns out there is away to do this by using features of the Solaris runtime loader (ld.so.1). First I need to expose a little bit of implementation detail about how the Solaris Cryptographic Framework is implemented in Solaris 11.  One of the new Solaris 11 features of the linker/loader is the ability to have a single ELF object that has multiple different implementations of the same functions that are selected at runtime based on the capabilities of the machine.  The alternate to this is having the application coded to call getisax() and make the choice itself.  We use this functionality of the linker/loader when we build the userland libraries for the Solaris Cryptographic Framework (specifically libmd.so, and the unfortunately misnamed due to historical reasons libsoftcrypto.so) The Solaris linker/loader allows control of a lot of its functionality via environment variables, we can use that to control the version of the cryptographic functions we run.  To do this we simply export the LD_HWCAP environment variable with values that tell ld.so.1 to not select the HWCAP section matching certain features even if isainfo says they are present.  For SPARC T4 that would be: export LD_HWCAP="-aes -des -md5 -sha256 -sha512 -mont -mpul" and for Intel systems with AES-NI support: export LD_HWCAP="-aes" This will work for consumers of the Solaris Cryptographic Framework that use the Solaris PKCS#11 libraries or use libmd.so interfaces directly.  It also works for the Oracle DB and Java JCE.  However does not work for the default enabled OpenSSL "t4" or "aes-ni" engines (unfortunately) because they do explicit calls to getisax() themselves rather than using multiple ELF cap sections. However we can still use OpenSSL to demonstrate this by explicitly selecting "pkcs11" engine  using only a single process and thread.  $ openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 54170.81k 187416.00k 489725.70k 805445.63k 1018880.00k $ LD_HWCAP="-aes" openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 29376.37k 58328.13k 79031.55k 86738.26k 89191.77k We can clearly see the difference this makes in the case where AES offload to the SPARC T4 was disabled. The "t4" engine is faster than the pkcs11 one because there is less overhead (again on a SPARC T4-1 using only a single process/thread - using -multi you will get even bigger numbers). $ openssl speed -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 85526.61k 89298.84k 91970.30k 92662.78k 92842.67k Yet another cool feature of the Solaris linker/loader, thanks Rod and Ali. Note these above openssl speed output is not intended to show the actual performance of any particular benchmark just that there is a significant improvement from using hardware acceleration on SPARC T4. • I have permanent connections to Canonical servers, what are they for and how can I turn them off?

  After the recent upgrade to 12, I notice permanent connections to canonical servers. Running netstat -tp gives: Foreign Address State PID/Program name mulberry.canonical:http CLOSE_WAIT 6537/ubuntu-geoip-p alkes.canonical.co:http CLOSE_WAIT 6667/python alkes.canonical.co:http CLOSE_WAIT 6667/python Why are there permanent connections and how could I stop this behavior? And if this is intentional, who is responsible? I would like to understand why this was done because to me it seems like a bad idea.

• When clientTransferProhibited is off to transfer a domain name, couldn't the name be stolen?

  I'd like to transfer a domain from one registrar (Key-systems) to another registrar (OVH). I don't really understand the procedure and I'm a bit confused... I read everywhere that clientTransferProhibited prevents people from stealing your domain name. Now apparently during the course of transferring my domain from Key-systems to OVH, I'll to change clientTransferProhibited so that the transfer is allowed. Wouldn't my domain then become "stealable" during some amount of time? (a few hours / days / week)

• Trade off: Lower the number of URLs in sitemap from 43k to 23k or update the sitemap.xml only weekly basis

  we rewrote the sitemap creation process. Now the sitemap contains 43.000 URLs. 20k more than before. We have daily changing in URLs. The script that is creating the complete sitemap takes more than 30h. So we can not build it every day. Lets say that increasing the speed of the script is not possible. What should I do? A: Stay with the 23k URLs and update it daily B: Increase number of URLs to 43k and update it weekly

• How do I copy an existing hard disc to a new one so I can boot off the new disc?

  I currently have a failing hard drive which is the only hard drive in the machine. I have just bought a new hard drive to replace it, and my plan is to copy the contents of the old drive onto the new one, and then replace the old drive in the machine with the new one. I presumably can't just copy the whole directory structure (or can I)? What do I need to do to manage this, assuming it is possible? Is there a utility to do this for me? (The old drive is hopefully good for a few more hours.) (I hope by this means to keep all the software and configuration files as they are, to avoid having to re-install everything. Can that be done?)

• Why is Joomla based website that was copied off of live server into localhost not showing pictures and throwing 404 error?

  I have copied Joomla based website via FTP onto my machine and I am trying to make it run on my localhost which is provided by the latest version of XAMPP. I have exported and imported the DB with no problems. I have placed all the files and folders into htdocs folder but when I go to localhost/examplesite all I get is the text that is on the front page but no pictures and it displays 404 Error. Do I need to make changes to .htaccess? If so, can some one point me to the right direction? Thanks

• CentOS 6: Can not start NFS

  I am unable to start the NFS service. When starting there is no error. But the services are stopt after it. No messages at all in /var/log/messages. Same happens to rpcbind serivce. Any idea what this could be? I also tried to disable iptables. • Can I toggle word-wrapping on/off quickly in Gedit?

  Depending on nature of the text, some times line wrapping is convenient, some times it is just confusing. And every time I need to switch this (pretty frequently) I have to do to View - Preferences - Enable text wrapping - Close - 4 clicks, not mentioning all the hand, eye and thought motion. Can this be done a quicker way? Most of text editors have this 2 clicks away (in a menu) at maximum, some have it on a toolbar or a hot key, but I couldn;t find any quick way in Gedit :-( Maybe there is a hot key I don't know?

• Why did visual programming never take off and what future paradigms might change that?

  As the number of "visual" OS's such as Android, iOS and the promised Windows 8 are becoming more popular, it does not seem to me that we programmers have new ways to code using these new technologies, due to a possible lack in new visual programming languages paradigms. I've seen several discussions about incompatibilities between the current coding development environment, and the new OS approaches from Windows 8, Android and other tablets OS's. I mean, today if we have a new tablet, it's almost a requirement for coding, to have, for instance, an external keyboard (due it seems to me it's very difficult to program using the touch screen), exactly because the coding assistance is not conceived to "write" thousands of lines of code. So, how advanced should be the "new" visual programming languages paradigms? Which characteristics these new paradigms would be required?

• Develop in trunk and then branch off, or in release branch and then merge back?

  Say that we've decided on following a "release-based" branching strategy, so we'll have a branch for each release, and we can add maintenance updates as sub-branches from those. Does it matter whether we: develop and stabilize a new release in the trunk and then "save" that state in a new release branch; or first create that release branch and only merge into the trunk when the branch is stable? I find the former to be easier to deal with (less merging necessary), especially when we don't develop on multiple upcoming releases at the same time. Under normal circumstances we would all be working on the trunk, and only work on released branches if there are bugs to fix. What is the trunk actually used for in the latter approach? It seems to be almost obsolete, because I could create a future release branch based on the most recent released branch rather than from the trunk. Details based on comment below: Our product consists of a base platform and a number of modules on top; each is developed and even distributed separately from each other. Most team members work on several of these areas, so there's partial overlap between people. We generally work only on 1 future release and not at all on existing releases. One or two might work on a bugfix for an existing release for short periods of time. Our work isn't compiled and it's a mix of Unix shell scripts, XML configuration files, SQL packages, and more -- so there's no way to have push-button builds that can be tested. That's done manually, which is a bit laborious. A release cycle is typically half a year or more for the base platform; often 1 month for the modules.

• Why Can't Computers Off My Network See the Site? [migrated]

  Have just set up Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc. on my Ubuntu OS, and I was wondering why computers that are not on my network can not see the basic index.html that Apache uses as the default. I set up the static ip address for my computer, and I use 192.168.1.100 for computers to view the simple site. Is there something I am missing that will allow others to access my site? (It is REALLY simple; no graphics, CSS, etc.)

• What percentage should a consulting company take off the top of your pay?

  Let's say that, hypothetically, a programmer is being paid $40 / hour for a 6 month contract, through a contracting agency. That contracting agency is being paid $85 / hour for every hour that programmer works by the client. So the programmer only actually takes home 47% of what the client is paying per hour. Is this normal, or is the percentage unusually low? Other things to consider: The consulting agency isn't paying benefits P.S (If this is normal, I'd also be curious what the justification would be to take that high of a percentage. And if it is NOT normal, what would be a normal percentage?)

• When I boot it says "No any drive found" and turns off after upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04

  I did an upgrade on the weekend from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (karmic to lucid). Now, when I restart my computer, it goes through the regular load screen showing my P5K Asus motherboard, just like before but instead of showing the Ubuntu load screen, it tries to start grub but fails and then says "No any drive found" and the screen goes black. I've tried changing the drive configuration in the BIOS to AHCI or RAID and that didn't work. I've tried disabling JMICRON but to no avail. I'm running out of options here. Any advice?

• When trying running Ubuntu 12.10 off a usb drive, I encounter an error while prevent me from doing anything else

  The details are that I used Universal USB Installer version 1.9.1.8 from pendrivelinux.com to install ubuntu 12.10 onto a 4gb pendrive as per instruction on Ubuntu's website. However, after I boot with drive I am met with the following message: "The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." Pressing Ctrl Alt F1 doesn't allow me access and the options on the dialog box either send me through a loop returning me to the previous dialog or just leave me dead in the water. Pressing Ctrl Alt Del does however restart the computer if I am dead in the water, so ubuntu isn't COMPLETELY unresponsive... I feel I should mention that I'm trying to run this distribution on my netbook. I can't install it directly to the harddrive since I need my current Windows distribution for certain programs that don't quite agree with WINE yet.
