• Strings are UTF-16…. There is an error in XML document (1, 1).

- by Shawn Cicoria
I had a situation today where an xml document had a directive indicating it was utf-8.  So, the code in question was reading in the “string” of that xml then attempting to de-serialize it using an Xsd generated type. What you end up with is an exception indicating that there’s an error in the Xml document at (1,1) or something to that effect. The fix is, run it through a memory stream – which reads the string, but at utf8 bytes – if you have things that fall outside of 8 bit chars, you’ll get an exception.   //Need to read it to bytes, to undo the fact that strings are UTF-16 all the time. //We want it to handle it as UTF8. byte[] bytes = Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(_myXmlString); TargetType myInstance = null; using (MemoryStream memStream = new MemoryStream(bytes)) { XmlSerializer tokenSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TargetType)); myInstance = (TargetType)tokenSerializer.Deserialize(memStream); }   Writing is similar – also, adding the default namespace prevents the additional xmlns additions that aren’t necessary:   XmlWriterSettings settings = new XmlWriterSettings() { Encoding = Encoding.UTF8, Indent = true, NewLineOnAttributes = true, }; XmlSerializerNamespaces xmlnsEmpty = new XmlSerializerNamespaces(); xmlnsEmpty.Add("", "http://www.wow.thisworks.com/2010/05"); MemoryStream memStr = new MemoryStream(); using (XmlWriter writer = XmlTextWriter.Create(memStr, settings)) { XmlSerializer tokenSerializer = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TargetType)); tokenSerializer.Serialize(writer, theInstance, xmlnsEmpty); }

• Where do I read more about building an architecture like Google has? [on hold]

- by user107148
I want to develop a program that watches and traverses a rather big network for data. This data should then be available to search through with my program, maybe through a web interface or something. My intuitive thought at the moment is to build an architecture kind of like the one Google has. One "front-end" (the Google Search page) which is essentially a regular web application and one "back-end" (which in Google's case traverses the web). Now for the hard part: If I decide to make such a system, how should communication be done between these parts? One idea I had is to use some kind of database that both the back-end and front-end can access, but then comes the issues of concurrent writes and reads. Another issue with just using a database to communicate is that it makes it hard to "notify" the other part when something changes. Let's say that I want the "front-end" part to push changes to the UI when a change is noticed in the back-end. Then the back-end would have to have some way of notifying the front-end of this.

• PASS: Bylaw Changes

- by Bill Graziano
While you’re reading this, a post should be going up on the PASS blog on the plans to change our bylaws. You should be able to find our old bylaws, our proposed bylaws and a red-lined version of the changes. We plan to listen to feedback until March 31st. At that point we’ll decide whether to vote on these changes or take other action. The executive summary is that we’re adding a restriction to prevent more than two people from the same company on the Board and eliminating the Board’s Officer Appointment Committee to have Officers directly elected by the Board. This second change better matches how officer elections have been conducted in the past. The Gritty Details Our scope was to change bylaws to match how PASS actually works and tackle a limited set of issues. Changing the bylaws is hard. We’ve been working on these changes since the March board meeting last year. At that meeting we met and talked through the issues we wanted to address. In years past the Board has tried to come up with language and then we’ve discussed and negotiated to get to the result. In March, we gave HQ guidance on what we wanted and asked them to come up with a starting point. Hannes worked on building us an initial set of changes that we could work our way through. Discussing changes like this over email is difficult wasn’t very productive. We do a much better job on this at the in-person Board meetings. Unfortunately there are only 2 or 3 of those a year. In August we met in Nashville and spent time discussing the changes. That was also the day after we released the slate for the 2010 election. The discussion around that colored what we talked about in terms of these changes. We talked very briefly at the Summit and again reviewed and revised the changes at the Board meeting in January. This is the result of those changes and discussions. We made numerous small changes to clean up language and make wording more clear. We also made two big changes. Director Employment Restrictions The first is that only two people from the same company can serve on the Board at the same time. The actual language in section VI.3 reads: A maximum of two (2) Directors who are employed by, or who are joint owners or partners in, the same for-profit venture, company, organization, or other legal entity, may concurrently serve on the PASS Board of Directors at any time. The definition of “employed” is at the sole discretion of the Board. And what a mess this turns out to be in practice. Our membership is a hodgepodge of interlocking relationships. Let’s say three Board members get together and start a blog service for SQL Server bloggers. It’s technically for-profit. Let’s assume it makes $8 in the first year. Does that trigger this clause? (Technically yes.) We had a horrible time trying to write language that covered everything. All the sample bylaws that we found were just as vague as this. That led to the third clause in this section. The first sentence reads: The Board of Directors reserves the right, strictly on a case-by-case basis, to overrule the requirements of Section VI.3 by majority decision for any single Director’s conflict of employment. We needed some way to handle the trivial issues and exercise some judgment. It seems like a public vote is the best way. This discloses the relationship and gets each Board member on record on the issue. In practice I think this clause will rarely be used. I think this entire section will only be invoked for actual employment issues and not for small side projects. In either case we have the mechanisms in place to handle it in a public, transparent way. That’s the first and third clauses. The second clause says that if your situation changes and you fall afoul of this restriction you need to notify the Board. The clause further states that if this new job means a Board members violates the “two-per-company” rule the Board may request their resignation. The Board can also allow the person to continue serving with a majority vote. I think this will also take some judgment. Consider a person switching jobs that leads to three people from the same company. I’m very likely to ask for someone to resign if all three are two weeks into a two year term. I’m unlikely to ask anyone to resign if one is two weeks away from ending their term. In either case, the decision will be a public vote that we can be held accountable for. One concern that was raised was whether this would affect someone choosing to accept a job. I think that’s a choice for them to make. PASS is clearly stating its intent that only two directors from any one organization should serve at any time. Once these bylaws are approved, this policy should not come as a surprise to any potential or current Board members considering a job change. This clause isn’t perfect. The biggest hole is business relationships that aren’t defined above. Let’s say that two employees from company “X” serve on the Board. What happens if I accept a full-time consulting contract with that company? Let’s assume I’m working directly for one of the two existing Board members. That doesn’t violate section VI.3. But I think it’s clearly the kind of relationship we’d like to prevent. Unfortunately that was even harder to write than what we have now. I fully expect that in the next revision of the bylaws we’ll address this. It just didn’t make it into this one. Officer Elections The officer election process received a slightly different rewrite. Our goal was to codify in the bylaws the actual process we used to elect the officers. The officers are the President, Executive Vice-President (EVP) and Vice-President of Marketing. The Immediate Past President (IPP) is also an officer but isn’t elected. The IPP serves in that role for two years after completing their term as President. We do that for continuity’s sake. Some organizations have a President-elect that serves for one or two years. The group that founded PASS chose to have an IPP. When I started on the Board, the Nominating Committee (NomCom) selected the slate for the at-large directors and the slate for the officers. There was always one candidate for each officer position. It wasn’t really an election so much as the NomCom decided who the next person would be for each officer position. Behind the scenes the Board worked to select the best people for the role. In June 2009 that process was changed to bring it line with what actually happens. An Officer Appointment Committee was created that was a subset of the Board. That committee would take time to interview the candidates and present a slate to the Board for approval. The majority vote of the Board would determine the officers for the next two years. In practice the Board itself interviewed the candidates and conducted the elections. That means it was time to change the bylaws again. Section VII.2 and VII.3 spell out the process used to select the officers. We use the phrase “Officer Appointment” to separate it from the Director election but the end result is that the Board elects the officers. Section VII.3 starts: Officers shall be appointed bi-annually by a majority of all the voting members of the Board of Directors. Everything else revolves around that sentence. We use the word appoint but they truly are elected. There are details in the bylaws for term limits, minimum requirements for President (1 prior term as an officer), tie breakers and filling vacancies. In practice we will have an election for President, then an election for EVP and then an election for VP Marketing. That means that losing candidates will be able to fall down the ladder and run for the next open position. Another point to note is that officers aren’t at-large directors. That means if a current sitting officer loses all three elections they are off the Board. Having Board member votes public will help with the transparency of this approach. This process has a number of positive and negatives. The biggest concern I expect to hear is that our members don’t directly choose the officers. I’m going to try and list all the positives and negatives of this approach. Many non-profits value continuity and are slower to change than a business. On the plus side this promotes that. On the negative side this promotes that. If we change too slowly the members complain that we aren’t responsive. If we change too quickly we make mistakes and fail at various things. We’ve been criticized for both of those lately so I’m not entirely sure where to draw the line. My rough assumption to this point is that we’re going too slow on governance and too quickly on becoming “more than a Summit.” This approach creates competition in the officer elections. If you are an at-large director there is no consequence to losing an election. If you are an officer the only way to stay on the Board is to win an officer election or an at-large election. If you are an officer and lose an election you can always run for the next office down. This makes it very easy for multiple people to contest an election. There is value in a person moving through the officer positions up to the Presidency. Having the Board select the officers promotes this. The down side is that it takes a LOT of time to get to the Presidency. We’ve had good people struggle with burnout. We’ve had lots of discussion around this. The process as we’ve described it here makes it possible for someone to move quickly through the ranks but doesn’t prevent people from working their way up through each role. We talked long and hard about having the officers elected by the members. We had a self-imposed deadline to complete these changes prior to elections this summer. The other challenge was that our original goal was to make the bylaws reflect our actual process rather than create a new one. I believe we accomplished this goal. We ran out of time to consider this option in the detail it needs. Having member elections for officers needs a number of problems solved. We would need a way for candidates to fall through the election. This is what promotes competition. Without this few people would risk an election and we’ll be back to one candidate per slot. We need to do this without having multiple elections. We may be able to copy what other organizations are doing but I was surprised at how little I could find on other organizations. We also need a way for people that lose an officer election to win an at-large election. Otherwise we’ll have very little competition for officers. This brings me to an area that I think we as a Board haven’t done a good job. We haven’t built a strong process to tell you who is doing a good job and who isn’t. This is a double-edged sword. I don’t want to highlight Board members that are failing. That’s not a good way to get people to volunteer and run for the Board. But I also need a way let the members make an informed choice about who is doing a good job and would make a good officer. Encouraging Board members to blog, publishing minutes and making votes public helps in that regard but isn’t the final answer. I don’t know what the final answer is yet. I do know that the Board members themselves are uniquely positioned to know which other Board members are doing good work. They know who speaks up in meetings, who works to build consensus, who has good ideas and who works with the members. What I Could Do Better I’ve learned a lot writing this about how we communicated with our members. The next time we revise the bylaws I’d do a few things differently. The biggest change would be to provide better documentation. The March 2009 minutes provide a very detailed look into what changes we wanted to make to the bylaws. Looking back, I’m a little surprised at how closely they matched our final changes and covered the various arguments. If you just read those you’d get 90% of what we eventually changed. Nearly everything else was just details around implementation. I’d also consider publishing a scope document defining exactly what we were doing any why. I think it really helped that we had a limited, defined goal in mind. I don’t think we did a good job communicating that goal outside the meeting minutes though. That said, I wish I’d blogged more after the August and January meeting. I think it would have helped more people to know that this change was coming and to be ready for it. Conclusion These changes address two big concerns that the Board had. First, it prevents a single organization from dominating the Board. Second, it codifies and clearly spells out how officers are elected. This is the process that was previously followed but it was somewhat murky. These changes bring clarity to this and clearly explain the process the Board will follow. We’re going to listen to feedback until March 31st. At that time we’ll decide whether to approve these changes. I’m also assuming that we’ll start another round of changes in the next year or two. Are there other issues in the bylaws that we should tackle in the future?

• OIM 11g : Multi-thread approach for writing custom scheduled job

- by Saravanan V S
In this post I have shared my experience of designing and developing an OIM schedule job that uses multi threaded approach for updating data in OIM using APIs. I have used thread pool (in particular fixed thread pool) pattern in developing the OIM schedule job. The thread pooling pattern has noted advantages compared to thread per task approach. I have listed few of the advantage here · Threads are reused · Creation and tear-down cost of thread is reduced · Task execution latency is reduced · Improved performance · Controlled and efficient management of memory and resources used by threads More about java thread pool http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/concurrency/pools.html The following diagram depicts the high-level architectural diagram of the schedule job that process input from a flat file to update OIM process form data using fixed thread pool approach The custom scheduled job shared in this post is developed to meet following requirement 1) Need to process a CSV extract that contains identity, account identifying key and list of data to be updated on an existing OIM resource account. 2) CSV file can contain data for multiple resources configured in OIM 3) List of attribute to update and mapping between CSV column to OIM fields may vary between resources The following are three Java class developed for this requirement (I have given only prototype of the code that explains how to use thread pools in schedule task) CustomScheduler.java - Implementation of TaskSupport class that reads and passes the parameters configured on the schedule job to Thread Executor class. package com.oracle.oim.scheduler; import java.util.HashMap; import com.oracle.oim.bo.MultiThreadDataRecon; import oracle.iam.scheduler.vo.TaskSupport; public class CustomScheduler extends TaskSupport { public void execute(HashMap options) throws Exception { /* Read Schedule Job Parameters */ String param1 = (String) options.get(“Parameter1”); . int noOfThread = (int) options.get(“No of Threads”); . String paramn = (int) options.get(“ParamterN”); /* Provide all the required input configured on schedule job to Thread Pool Executor implementation class like 1) Name of the file, 2) Delimiter 3) Header Row Numer 4) Line Escape character 5) Config and resource map lookup 6) No the thread to create */ new MultiThreadDataRecon(all_required_parameters, noOfThreads).reconcile(); } public HashMap getAttributes() { return null; } public void setAttributes() { } } MultiThreadDataRecon.java – Helper class that reads data from input file, initialize the thread executor and builds the task queue. package com.oracle.oim.bo; import <required file IO classes>; import <required java.util classes>; import <required OIM API classes>; import <csv reader api>; public class MultiThreadDataRecon { private int noOfThreads; private ExecutorService threadExecutor = null; • C#/.NET Little Wonders: Interlocked CompareExchange()

- by James Michael Hare
Once again, in this series of posts I look at the parts of the .NET Framework that may seem trivial, but can help improve your code by making it easier to write and maintain. The index of all my past little wonders posts can be found here. Two posts ago, I discussed the Interlocked Add(), Increment(), and Decrement() methods (here) for adding and subtracting values in a thread-safe, lightweight manner. Then, last post I talked about the Interlocked Read() and Exchange() methods (here) for safely and efficiently reading and setting 32 or 64 bit values (or references). This week, we’ll round out the discussion by talking about the Interlocked CompareExchange() method and how it can be put to use to exchange a value if the current value is what you expected it to be. Dirty reads can lead to bad results Many of the uses of Interlocked that we’ve explored so far have centered around either reading, setting, or adding values. But what happens if you want to do something more complex such as setting a value based on the previous value in some manner? Perhaps you were creating an application that reads a current balance, applies a deposit, and then saves the new modified balance, where of course you’d want that to happen atomically. If you read the balance, then go to save the new balance and between that time the previous balance has already changed, you’ll have an issue! Think about it, if we read the current balance as $400, and we are applying a new deposit of $50.75, but meanwhile someone else deposits $200 and sets the total to $600, but then we write a total of $450.75 we’ve lost $200! Now, certainly for int and long values we can use Interlocked.Add() to handles these cases, and it works well for that. But what if we want to work with doubles, for example? Let’s say we wanted to add the numbers from 0 to 99,999 in parallel. We could do this by spawning several parallel tasks to continuously add to a total: 1: double total = 0; 2: 3: Parallel.For(0, 10000, next => 4: { 5: total += next; 6: }); Were this run on one thread using a standard for loop, we’d expect an answer of 4,999,950,000 (the sum of all numbers from 0 to 99,999). But when we run this in parallel as written above, we’ll likely get something far off. The result of one of my runs, for example, was 1,281,880,740. That is way off! If this were banking software we’d be in big trouble with our clients. So what happened? The += operator is not atomic, it will read in the current value, add the result, then store it back into the total. At any point in all of this another thread could read a “dirty” current total and accidentally “skip” our add. So, to clean this up, we could use a lock to guarantee concurrency: 1: double total = 0.0; 2: object locker = new object(); 3: 4: Parallel.For(0, count, next => 5: { 6: lock (locker) 7: { 8: total += next; 9: } 10: }); Which will give us the correct result of 4,999,950,000. One thing to note is that locking can be heavy, especially if the operation being locked over is trivial, or the life of the lock is a high percentage of the work being performed concurrently. In the case above, the lock consumes pretty much all of the time of each parallel task – and the task being locked on is relatively trivial. Now, let me put in a disclaimer here before we go further: For most uses, lock is more than sufficient for your needs, and is often the simplest solution! So, if lock is sufficient for most needs, why would we ever consider another solution? The problem with locking is that it can suspend execution of your thread while it waits for the signal that the lock is free. Moreover, if the operation being locked over is trivial, the lock can add a very high level of overhead. This is why things like Interlocked.Increment() perform so well, instead of locking just to perform an increment, we perform the increment with an atomic, lockless method. As with all things performance related, it’s important to profile before jumping to the conclusion that you should optimize everything in your path. If your profiling shows that locking is causing a high level of waiting in your application, then it’s time to consider lighter alternatives such as Interlocked. CompareExchange() – Exchange existing value if equal some value So let’s look at how we could use CompareExchange() to solve our problem above. The general syntax of CompareExchange() is: T CompareExchange<T>(ref T location, T newValue, T expectedValue) If the value in location == expectedValue, then newValue is exchanged. Either way, the value in location (before exchange) is returned. Actually, CompareExchange() is not one method, but a family of overloaded methods that can take int, long, float, double, pointers, or references. It cannot take other value types (that is, can’t CompareExchange() two DateTime instances directly). Also keep in mind that the version that takes any reference type (the generic overload) only checks for reference equality, it does not call any overridden Equals(). So how does this help us? Well, we can grab the current total, and exchange the new value if total hasn’t changed. This would look like this: 1: // grab the snapshot 2: double current = total; 3: 4: // if the total hasn’t changed since I grabbed the snapshot, then 5: // set it to the new total 6: Interlocked.CompareExchange(ref total, current + next, current); So what the code above says is: if the amount in total (1st arg) is the same as the amount in current (3rd arg), then set total to current + next (2nd arg). This check and exchange pair is atomic (and thus thread-safe). This works if total is the same as our snapshot in current, but the problem, is what happens if they aren’t the same? Well, we know that in either case we will get the previous value of total (before the exchange), back as a result. Thus, we can test this against our snapshot to see if it was the value we expected: 1: // if the value returned is != current, then our snapshot must be out of date 2: // which means we didn't (and shouldn't) apply current + next 3: if (Interlocked.CompareExchange(ref total, current + next, current) != current) 4: { 5: // ooops, total was not equal to our snapshot in current, what should we do??? 6: } So what do we do if we fail? That’s up to you and the problem you are trying to solve. It’s possible you would decide to abort the whole transaction, or perhaps do a lightweight spin and try again. Let’s try that: 1: double current = total; 2: 3: // make first attempt... 4: if (Interlocked.CompareExchange(ref total, current + i, current) != current) 5: { 6: // if we fail, go into a spin wait, spin, and try again until succeed 7: var spinner = new SpinWait(); 8: 9: do 10: { 11: spinner.SpinOnce(); 12: current = total; 13: } 14: while (Interlocked.CompareExchange(ref total, current + i, current) != current); 15: } 16: This is not trivial code, but it illustrates a possible use of CompareExchange(). What we are doing is first checking to see if we succeed on the first try, and if so great! If not, we create a SpinWait and then repeat the process of SpinOnce(), grab a fresh snapshot, and repeat until CompareExchnage() succeeds. You may wonder why not a simple do-while here, and the reason it’s more efficient to only create the SpinWait until we absolutely know we need one, for optimal efficiency. Though not as simple (or maintainable) as a simple lock, this will perform better in many situations. Comparing an unlocked (and wrong) version, a version using lock, and the Interlocked of the code, we get the following average times for multiple iterations of adding the sum of 100,000 numbers: 1: Unlocked money average time: 2.1 ms 2: Locked money average time: 5.1 ms 3: Interlocked money average time: 3 ms So the Interlocked.CompareExchange(), while heavier to code, came in lighter than the lock, offering a good compromise of safety and performance when we need to reduce contention. CompareExchange() - it’s not just for adding stuff… So that was one simple use of CompareExchange() in the context of adding double values -- which meant we couldn’t have used the simpler Interlocked.Add() -- but it has other uses as well. If you think about it, this really works anytime you want to create something new based on a current value without using a full lock. For example, you could use it to create a simple lazy instantiation implementation. In this case, we want to set the lazy instance only if the previous value was null: 1: public static class Lazy<T> where T : class, new() 2: { 3: private static T _instance; 4: 5: public static T Instance 6: { 7: get 8: { 9: // if current is null, we need to create new instance 10: if (_instance == null) 11: { 12: // attempt create, it will only set if previous was null 13: Interlocked.CompareExchange(ref _instance, new T(), (T)null); 14: } 15: 16: return _instance; 17: } 18: } 19: } So, if _instance == null, this will create a new T() and attempt to exchange it with _instance. If _instance is not null, then it does nothing and we discard the new T() we created. This is a way to create lazy instances of a type where we are more concerned about locking overhead than creating an accidental duplicate which is not used. In fact, the BCL implementation of Lazy<T> offers a similar thread-safety choice for Publication thread safety, where it will not guarantee only one instance was created, but it will guarantee that all readers get the same instance. Another possible use would be in concurrent collections. Let’s say, for example, that you are creating your own brand new super stack that uses a linked list paradigm and is “lock free”. We could use Interlocked.CompareExchange() to be able to do a lockless Push() which could be more efficient in multi-threaded applications where several threads are pushing and popping on the stack concurrently. Yes, there are already concurrent collections in the BCL (in .NET 4.0 as part of the TPL), but it’s a fun exercise! So let’s assume we have a node like this: 1: public sealed class Node<T> 2: { 3: // the data for this node 4: public T Data { get; set; } 5: 6: // the link to the next instance 7: internal Node<T> Next { get; set; } 8: } Then, perhaps, our stack’s Push() operation might look something like: 1: public sealed class SuperStack<T> 2: { 3: private volatile T _head; 4: 5: public void Push(T value) 6: { 7: var newNode = new Node<int> { Data = value, Next = _head }; 8: 9: if (Interlocked.CompareExchange(ref _head, newNode, newNode.Next) != newNode.Next) 10: { 11: var spinner = new SpinWait(); 12: 13: do 14: { 15: spinner.SpinOnce(); 16: newNode.Next = _head; 17: } 18: while (Interlocked.CompareExchange(ref _head, newNode, newNode.Next) != newNode.Next); 19: } 20: } 21: 22: // ... 23: } Notice a similar paradigm here as with adding our doubles before. What we are doing is creating the new Node with the data to push, and with a Next value being the original node referenced by _head. This will create our stack behavior (LIFO – Last In, First Out). Now, we have to set _head to now refer to the newNode, but we must first make sure it hasn’t changed! So we check to see if _head has the same value we saved in our snapshot as newNode.Next, and if so, we set _head to newNode. This is all done atomically, and the result is _head’s original value, as long as the original value was what we assumed it was with newNode.Next, then we are good and we set it without a lock! If not, we SpinWait and try again. Once again, this is much lighter than locking in highly parallelized code with lots of contention. If I compare the method above with a similar class using lock, I get the following results for pushing 100,000 items: 1: Locked SuperStack average time: 6 ms 2: Interlocked SuperStack average time: 4.5 ms So, once again, we can get more efficient than a lock, though there is the cost of added code complexity. Fortunately for you, most of the concurrent collection you’d ever need are already created for you in the System.Collections.Concurrent (here) namespace – for more information, see my Little Wonders – The Concurent Collections Part 1 (here), Part 2 (here), and Part 3 (here). Summary We’ve seen before how the Interlocked class can be used to safely and efficiently add, increment, decrement, read, and exchange values in a multi-threaded environment. In addition to these, Interlocked CompareExchange() can be used to perform more complex logic without the need of a lock when lock contention is a concern. The added efficiency, though, comes at the cost of more complex code. As such, the standard lock is often sufficient for most thread-safety needs. But if profiling indicates you spend a lot of time waiting for locks, or if you just need a lock for something simple such as an increment, decrement, read, exchange, etc., then consider using the Interlocked class’s methods to reduce wait. • D3.js: "NS_ERROR_DOM_BAD_URI: Access to restricted URI denied"

- by user2102328
I have an html-file with several d3-graphs directly written in script tags into it. When I outsource one of the graphs into an external js file I get this message "NS_ERROR_DOM_BAD_URI: Access to restricted URI denied". If I delete the code with d3.json where it reads a local json file the error disappears. But it has to be possible to load a json file in an external js which is embedded into an html, right? d3.json("forcetree.json", function(json) { root = json; update(); });

• Repository Pattern with Entity Framework 3.5 and MVVM

- by Ravi
I am developing a Database File System. I am using - .Net framework 3.5 Entity Framework 3.5 WPF with MVVM pattern The project spans across multiple assemblies each using same model. One assembly,let's call it a "server", only adds data to the database using EF i.e. same model.Other assemblies (including the UI) both reads and writes the data.The changes made by server should immediately reflect in other assemblies. The database contains self referencing tables where each entity can have single OR no parent and (may be) some children. I want to use repository pattern which can also provide some mechanism to handle this hierarchical nature. I have already done reading on this on Code Project. It shares the same context(entities) everywhere. My question is - Should I share the same context everywhere? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing that?

• Populating Tcl Treeview with Sqlite Data

- by DFM
Hello: I am building a Tcl application that reads off of a Sqlite Db. Currently, I can enter data into the database using the Tcl frontend. Now, I am trying to figure out how to display the data within the Sqlite Db from the Tcl frontend. After a little bit of research, I found that the treeview widget would work well for my needs. I now have the following code: set z1 [ttk::treeview .c1.t1 -columns {1 2} -show headings] $z1 heading #1 -text "First Name" $z1 heading #2 -text "Last Name" proc Srch {} {global z1 sqlite3 db test.db pack $z1 db close } When the "Srch" procedure is executed (button event), the treeview (z1) appears with the headings First Name and Last Name. Additionally, the Sqlite Db gets connected, then closes. I wanted to add code that would populate the treeview from the Sqlite Db between connecting to the Db and packing the treeview (z1). Does anyone know the correct syntax to populate a Tcl treeview with data from Sqlite? Thank you everyone in advance, DFM

• Prevent Python from caching the imported modules

- by Olivier
While developing a largeish project (split in several files and folders) in Python with IPython, I run into the trouble of cached imported modules. The problem is that instructions import module only reads the module once, even if that module has changed! So each time I change something in my package, I have to quit and restart IPython. Painful. Is there any way to properly force reloading some modules? Or, better, to somehow prevent Python from caching them? I tried several approaches, but none works. In particular I run into really, really weird bugs, like some modules or variables mysteriously becoming equal to None... The only sensible resource I found is Reloading Python modules, from pyunit, but I have not checked it. I would like something like that. A good alternative would be for IPython to restart, or restart the Python interpreter somehow. So, if you develop in Python, what solution have you found to this problem?

• NoSQL vs Ehcache caching advise for speeding up read only mysql Database

- by paddydub
I'm building a Route Planner Webapp using Spring/Hibernate/Tomcat and a mysql database, I have a database containing read only data, such as Bus Stop Coordinates, Bus times which is never updated. I'm trying to make the app run faster, each time the application is run it will preform approx 1000 reads to the database to calculate a route. I have setup a Ehcache which greatly improves the read from database times. I'm now setting terracotta + Ehcache distributed caching to share the cache with multiple Tomcat JVMs. This seems a bit complicated. I've tried memcached but it was not performing as fast as ehcache. I'm wondering if a MongoDb or Redis would be better suited. I have no experience with nosql but I would appreciate if anyone has any ideas. What i need is quick access to the read only database.

• ASP.NET application/web service not working on Windows Vista/IIS 7: access right problem?

- by Achim
I have a .NET 3.5 based web service running at http://localhost/serivce.svc/. Then I have an ASP.NET application running at http://localhost/myApp. In Application_Load my application reads some XML configuration from the web service. That works fine on my machine, but: On Windows Vista with IIS 7 the request to the web services fails. The web service can be accessed via the browser without any problem. I configured the app pool of my application to run as admin. I added the admin to the IIS_USRS group, but it still cannot access the web service. impersonate=true/false seems not to make a difference.

• How to convert binary read/write to non-binary read/write in C++

- by Phenom
I have some C++ code from somewhere that reads and writes data in binary format. I want to see what it's reading and writing in the file, so I want to convert it's binary read and write to non-binary read and write. Also, when I convert the binary write to non-binary write, I want it to still be able to read in the information correctly. How can this be done? The write function: int btwrite(short rrn, BTPAGE *page_ptr) { // long lseek(), addr; long addr; addr = (long) rrn * (long) PAGESIZE + HEADERSIZE; lseek(btfd, addr, 0); return (write(btfd, page_ptr, PAGESIZE)); } The read function: int btread(short rrn, BTPAGE *page_ptr) { // long lseek(), addr; long addr; addr = (long)rrn * (long)PAGESIZE + HEADERSIZE; lseek(btfd, addr, 0); return ( read(btfd, page_ptr, PAGESIZE) ); }

• Non-blocking read on a stream in python.

- by Mathieu Pagé
Hi, I'm using the subprocess module to start a subprocess and connect to it's output stream (stdout). I want to be able to execute non-blocking reads on its stdout. Is there a way to make .readline non-bloking or to check if there is data on the stream before I invoke .readline? I'd like this to be portable or at least work under Windows and Linux. here is how I do it for now (It's blocking on the .readline if no data is avaible): p = subprocess.Popen('myprogram.exe', stdout = subprocess.PIPE) str = p.stdout.readline() Thanks for your help.

Sorry if I am not supposed to post beginner level questions here..I am new to this site Please read the code below first I am confused about getchar() 's role in the following code.. I mean I know its helping me see the output window which will only be closed when I press enter key So getchar() is basically waiting for me to press enter and then reads a single character .. Now my question.. what is that single character this function is reading ?? I did not press any key from the keyboard for it to read Now when its not reading anything..why it does not give an error saying hey u didn't enter anything for me to read ..lol...(told u its a dumb question) #include <stdio.h> int main() { printf( "blah \n" ); getchar(); return 0; }

• EOF error encountered while converting bytearray to bitmapdata

- by intoTHEwild
I am using var bitmapdata:BitmapData=new BitmapData(); var pixels:Bytearray=new Bytearray(); pixels = rleDecodePixles(); bitmapdata.setPixels(bitmapdata.rect, pixels); In the 4th line in the code above i am getting "Error: Error #2030: End of file was encountered." I checked the length of the pixels object which is 4 times the width*height of the rect object. Given that setPixels() functions reads unsigned int from bytearray and sets that value to pixels, I think it should work. But I have no clue why this wont work. The pixels object is filled after RLE decoding of the data which i get from a server. Is there any work around or any other method which I could try to use. The loader class wont work as the data that I get from the server is not in any of the recognized format. Any help is greatly appreciated. Shrikant Thanks.

• Do WPF ComboBox SelectedIndex and SelectedValue have different behavior on SelectionChanged event?

- by Junior Mayhé
Hello guys I got this cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged firing as expected. The problem is when a external method tries to set cbxJobPosition. cbxJobPosition is databinded with a list of objects of type JobPosition: JobPositionID: 1, JobPositionName: Manager JobPositionID: 2, JobPositionName: Employee JobPositionID: 3, JobPositionName: Third party Here's the XAML: <ComboBox Cursor="Hand" DataContext="{Binding}" ItemsSource="{Binding}" FontSize="13" Name="cbxJobPosition" SelectedValuePath="JobPositionID" DisplayMemberPath="JobPositionName" SelectedIndex="0" Width="233" Height="23" SelectionChanged="cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged" /> On UserControl_Loaded method, it reads from database the list of jobs and try to set the specific job position "Third party": //calls cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged and passes the correct SelectedValue within cbxJobPosition.SelectedIndex = 3; //calls cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged and but won't pass the correct SelectedValue within cbxJobPosition.SelectedValue = "3"; As you can notice, when the processing is automatically redirected to cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged, the SelectedValue attribute will have different values for each statement above when you're debugging within cbxJobPosition_SelectionChanged event. Does anyone know if this difference is expected, am I missing something or it could be a bug?

• Can two Silverlight applications share IsolatedStorage on one machine?

- by Edward Tanguay
What identifies an application and when can two applications share IsolatedStorage if at all, i.e.: if I want to have two Silverlight applications share IsolatedStorage space, is this possible? What kind of "application id" do I need to give to do this? if I don't want two Silverlight applications to share IsolatedStorage, how do I prevent this? Do I need to do this? For instance, I've noticed when I develop a Silverlight application, I can press F5, in the application save to Isolated Storage, stop the application, press F5 again, and it reads from the same IsolatedStorage. (I would think that a new compilation would cause it to use new IsolatedStorage.) However, when I then copy the .xap and .html files to another directory and open the .html file, it does NOT share the IsolatedStorage with the application I was developing. What changed? What is going on behind the scenes here so I know when IsolatedStorage is shared and when it isn't?

• mySQL auto increment problem: Duplicate entry '4294967295' for key 1

- by Josh
I have a table of emails. The last record in there for an auto increment id is 3780, which is a legit record. Any new record I now insert is being inserted right there. However, in my logs I have the occasional: Query FAIL: INSERT INTO mail.messages (timestamp_queue) VALUES (:time); Array ( [0] => 23000 [1] => 1062 [2] => Duplicate entry '4294967295' for key 1 ) Somehow, the autoincrement jumped up to the INT max of 4294967295 Why on god's green earth would this get jumped up so high? I have no inserts with an id field. The show status for that table, Auto_increment table now reads: 4294967296 How could something like this occur? I realize the id field should perhaps be a big int, but the worry I have is that somehow this thing jumps back up. Josh

• QTableWidget signal cellChanged(): distinguish between user input and change by routines

- by crabman
i am using PyQt but my question is a general Qt one: I have a QTableWidget that is set up by the function updateTable. It writes the data from DATASET to the table when it is called. Unfortunately this causes my QTableWidget to emit the signal cellChanged() for every cell. The signal cellChanged() is connected to a function on_tableWidget_cellChanged that reads the contents of the changed cell and writes it back to DATASET. This is necessary to allow the user to change the data manually. So everytime the table is updated, its contents are written back to DATASET. Is there a way to distinguish if the cell was changed by the user or by updateTable? i thought of disconnecting on_tableWidget_cellChanged by updateTable temporarily but that seems to be a little dirty.

• Custom MediaStreamSource and MediaElement.Naturalduration property

- by Tilo Skomudek
i have written a custom mediastreamsource, that can play media from growing source files (mpeg transport streams). Once it reaches the end of its mediastream, it reads the new duration from the mediafile and continues to deliver samples. The MediaElement plays continously. Unfortunately i haven´t found a way to update the MediaElement.NaturalDuration property. Hence i cannot seek into the “reloaded” area, because ME doesn´t know about it and sets my position change to its NaturalDuration value. I tried to call ReportOpenMediaCompleted after getting the new stream length. Then Naturalduration get´s updated, but i cannot play anymore. Is there any other way to deal with it ?

• ajax call through cas

- by manu1001
I need to write a google gadget that reads feeds from google groups. Trouble is I'm making an ajax call to retrieve the feeds and our google apps domain is protected by CAS (central authentication service). So, I'm getting a 400 bad request on making the call. I suspect that the browser is not sending the cookie when making ajax call. How do I ensure that the cookie is also sent with the ajax call? OR if that's not supposed to be the problem, what do i need to do?
