• Key logger wont record key strokes without console

  I created a small basic key logger in C++. For some reason when I compile and run the program with the console displayed, it will record every key stroke I make in whatever program I am using such as a browser and store it in a text file. However when I make it so that it WON'T display a console window, it will not record anything and it's just a process in the background doing nothing. • C# Console Application - Odd behaviour - char '\a'

  After extensive debugging of an application, I noticed the console window would hang when searching text for the char '\a'. The goal is to strip out characters from a file. The console window would always hang upon exiting the program, and it would make it to the last statement of main. I removed the '\a' from the switch statement and the console application does not hang anymore. Any idea why? • Cannot get SCVMM Admin Console to Connect to Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

  I cannot get SCVMM Admin console to connect to Hyper-V Server 2008. I have changed all firewall settings on the server to allow for a connection, I have even tried turning the firewall off completely. I am getting this error message: Unable to connect to the Virtual Machine Manager server xx.xxx.xxx.xx. the Virtual Machine Manager service on that servier did not respond. Verify that Virtual Machine Manager has been installed on the server and that the Virtual Machine Manager service is running. Then try to connect again. If the problem persists, restart the Virtual Machine Manager Service. ID: 1602 I have tried restarting the VMMS service, and that did not work. I have posted a similar question to this before, and was told to make sure to intall the Hyper-V agent on the Hyper-V server. I was told that SCVMM can push the agent out to the server. However, if I cannot connect to the server, how can I use SCVMM to push out the agent? Thanks for any help.

• SSH to VM rejecting password, works from virt-manager console

  First of all, I'm sorry if there is a duplicate post somewhere. I searched for a while but none of the posts I found fixed my problem. It's fairly annoying. I created a new VM on our network and when using virt-manager I can log into the VM fine with the username and password. When I try to ssh to the VM from anywhere else it rejects the password, but I know the password is correct. I've even changed it multiple times to make sure its correct. The address I'm ssh'ing to is definitely pointing at the right VM as well, I've tested all this. It's still usable, but the virt-manager console is very limited so the sooner I can get to the bottom of this the better. VM is running ubuntu 12.04 btw. EDIT 1 Checked the auth.log and all I'm getting is "sshd[29304]:Connection closed by 'server.ip.address' [preauth]". I also tried allowing logging in as root, and even turned off password auth altogether in sshd_config and still nothing! I then turned on "AllowEmptyPasswords", still a whole lot of nothing.

• How to enable the 2 concurrent (+1 console) sessions on Windows Server 2012

  I have a Windows Server 2012 VM running on Windows Azure. I want to enable the ability for 2 simultaneous administrative sessions over Remote Desktop. This is permitted under the EULA for Windows Server 2012. This is NOT the same thing as the fully-blown Terminal Services / RDS feature. In Windows Server 2000 and 2003, multiple concurrent sessions (up to a limit of 2, plus the root /console session) were enabled by default (such that logging-in via RDP without logging-out first would create a new session rather than reconnecting to the old session). In Server 2008 and later it uses single-sessions by default, as this simplifies administration (as most people want to connect to old sessions). In Windows Server 2008 R2, you can add the MMC snap-ins for Remote Desktop Host Configuration which allows you to re-enable concurrent sessions. However, in Server 2012, after adding the Remote Administration snap-ins from Server Manager it seems the Remote Desktop Host Configuration snap-in has been removed. How can I re-enable the multiple concurrent sessions for Remote Desktop for Administration in Windows Server 2012?

• Explorer.exe not starting after login on Windows Server 2003 (Terminal Services and console)

  When users login to a Windows Server 2003 R2 running Terminal Services they have a blank desktop. Upon inspection, explorer.exe is not running. When I login as administrator, using either RDP or to the console, I am having the same issue. I can pull up the taskman and start explorer.exe manually. I have another Terminal Server setup exactly the same way (same apps, settings, GPO, etc . . .) the only difference is we deployed Symantec Endpoint Client 11.0.5 on Friday. For some reason the working Terminal Server is still on 11.0.4, but the suspect server received the 11.0.5 client upgrade. I checked the eventviewer for any relevant explorer.exe entries to no avail. It seems that if SEP is preventing explorer.exe from starting at login it would do the same for the domain admin starting explorer.exe from the taskman. I disabled the SEP client and services on the server and issued smc -stop and tried logging in again. Still no explorer.exe. So I'm not sure if the client upgrade is relevant but it is worth mentioning since that was the last system change. The 2 servers are members of a NLB group. I took the bad terminal server out of the group until the issue is resolved. Actually stopped the host using NLB manager Any help is appreciated.

• Gray Progress Bar in Macbook Boot caused by Partition Fault

  Here's my problem: When I try to load my macbook it shows the gray progress bar. It takes a while to fill the whole progress and after it macbook just shuts down. I tried to boot from recovery partition and run Disk Utility to repair it. Disk Utility showed my "Macintosh HD" in a gray color and failed to repair it. I thought all my data was lost, but then I tried the following: So I booted into ubunto from live usb and it successfully mounted my macintosh hd hfs+ partition. Parted shows me the following partitions on my disk: Disk /dev/sda: 500GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 20.5kB 210MB 210MB fat32 EFI System Partition boot 2 210MB 499GB 499GB hfs+ Macintosh HD 3 499GB 500GB 650MB hfs+ Recovery HD Seems legit except for FAT32 for EFI System Partition. Since all my data is okay and backed up what should I do to recover the system. I don't really want to reinstall all the system though I believe there's a command to make it allright in linux.   Is it possible for S.M.A.R.T. to give false readings (say I was fiddling with lots of recovery programs, transfers, so on and so forth) or is it absolutely a read-only direct correlation to the physical status of a drive? Does SpinRite level 5 "recover bad sectors" operate on those marked at the factory? Are they on the same level as your generic bad sector, with SpinRite thus having full access? (Also I'm curious if SMART's bad sector count is zero'd afterward or if it includes factory marked sectors.) The main firmware of some drives, like a WD Passport is stored on the platter. How is it protected? Is it through marking them as bad sectors? If so, I'm wondering if SpinRite's sector recovery could bring about firmware corruption on these drives. Is the failure of a drive to report valid identity information (hdparm -I /dev/xx) consistent with corrupted firmware, or just general disk failure? I may be misunderstanding the role of firmware here. I feel I've read a drive's identity information is on the platter, just like the partition tables and so on. Is this true? (Apologizes if this is more appropriate for SuperUser.)

• Auto-rebuild RAID6 with MDADM

  Hello everybody, i'm new in this forum, and because I see that a lot of people get helped here, i'll ask my question here! I have a openSUSE 11.3 Linux computer with 5 disks of 1TB (WD enterprise disks) in it. with mdadm I configured an RAID6 device. Now, after a lot of thorough testing, i've noticed that when the computer goes down unsuspectedly it could happen (1 time out of 10) that while booting, the md0 device isn't recognised, and then the machine goes in "recovery mode", which means that i have to 'CTRL + C' it so it can boot to openSUSE. Once in openSUSE i have to readd the drive manually with 'mdadm /dev/md0 --add /dev/sdX'. After this everything works back fine (after resynching). So my question is: Is there a way to auto-rebuild the RAID6 device when there are problems? and how can I stop this "recovery mode" from happening. Because the computer will be in a place I can't go to, to connect a keyboard, 'CTRL + C' it just to get in openSUSE. • During Vista Repair - No operating system is listed.

  After a Windows update, my brother's Gateway computer loads to the "Step 3 of 3: 0%" and reboots. Safe Mode does not work. I placed a Vista DVD in the drive, and re-booted. (Note, this is my Vista DVD, not the Recovery/System disc that would come with a computer. Gateway does not give you CD's anymore. I believe they store recovery on a partition, but that partition has been wiped out). I chose "Repair Your Computer" I get a dialog box, but no operating system is listed. I'm then prompted to "Load Drivers". What drivers am I supposed to be loading here and where from? I placed a CD in the drive to "load drivers" but I don't see my DVD drive listed. All I saw where X:/Sources along with several Removable Media slots that were empty. On another screen I tried Startup Repair, which didn't do anything. I attempted to use System Restore - but it doesn't detect the hard drive. I'm guessing that I'm missing some sort of SATA driver and that is why the hard disk is not being found. Any ideas on this?

• Recover data from physically damaged harddrive. What are my options?

  I was trying to replace the power supply in my desktop PC and ended up physically damaging the data connection from the hard drive to the motherboard. The plastic shelf for the copper prongs on the hard drive broke into the cable. Here is a picture of my handy work: I went to Best Buy Geek Squad to discuss my options and they said that they will need to send it to the recover center it could cost anywhere between $250 to $1600 USD to recover the data out the hard drive Is this reasonable for data recovery from a physically damaged hard drive? Are there any other options I can explore? I am going to talk to the data doctors to see what my options are. Update I took the HD to Data Doctors, and they told me that the SATA connection was broken to they would need to replaced the data connector and then copy the data to a brand new hard drive. So, with the initial analysis, cost of replacement parts, and data recovery fee it came out to $865.00 USD. The technician specifically stated if this was an older hard drive that would just need to replace the data connector. But because there is specific information related to the individual hard drive in the flash ROM, they need to transfer the data to a brand new hard drive.

• Dell XPS 15 L502X hard drive Partition

  I have a situation here. I got my new Dell XPS 15 Laptop. The configuration of hard drive is as below : Volume 1: (OEM Partition): 133MB Volume 2: OS (C:): 685.25 GB Volume 3: Recovery : 13.25 GB Now, I am trying to re-partition my C Drive to have a C: drive with 100 GB and a new drive with 585 GB. Earlier, I tried using the Windows 7 Disk Management to shrink and extend the volume. That lead to the OS and hard drive not working. Dell Tech support tried to fix the issue, but they were not able to fix the issue online. Later a Dell Technician arrived my place, and replaced the hard drive with a new hard drive. Please help me re-partition the C: Drive with 100 GB, and new D drive with 585 GB. I don't want to lose my Recovery Partition. SOLUTION As Suggested by KCotreau below , I have done exactly. I have resized the C drive to 100 GB. And then applied the changes. Windows got restarted. On the boot screen, the partition was taking place. It took around 30 mins ( approx. ). Once after restart, I can see my C drive is 100 GB. Now opened the Easeus again. And created a new partition for the free space ( 585 GB ) this took 10 seconds to create. • Exchange 2003: recover mailbox when migrated to 2007

  We have migrated almost all of our mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to 2007 so both are still up and co-existing in our domain. One mailbox is missing some mails, and I tried to recover from an Exchange 2003 backup using ExMerge as usual, but it throws an error: Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d) This should be normal when a mailbox has been migrated to 2007 and you try to recover a 2003 backup as stated here: http://www.petri.co.il/restoring-exchange-2003-mailboxes-exchange-2007-exmerge.htm We then tried the solution given in the article (copying the value "homemdb" for the user and pasting this in "msExchOrigMDB" for the Recovery Storage Group object in adsiedit). The error unfortuntely persists. So my question is, how can I extract a .pst from a mailbox in the recovery storage group when both Exchange 2003 and 2007 are running? I assume this is why the solution in the article didn't work. If no solution is possible using regular tools (exmerge, eseutil, etc.) which third-party tool should we choose - preferably the cheapest as we only need this one mailbox recovered.

• How I can recover files when the folder shows empty but the files are not deleted?

  Yesterday, my laptop caught a virus which caused massive damage. Since them, I have been trying to recover important files before reformatting my computer, a task the virus has not made easy. Restoration points predating the attack have been deleted. Most of my folders show empty. My Start menu is essentially empty, with the exception of Trillian and Mirror's Edge. The same goes for my Desktop, which only has programs which were installed after the attack. Searching for files though my computer is pretty much useless, as it only rarely brings up anything. I suspect most of my files have not been deleted. While my folders show empty, uTorrent still does display them and I can open them from here. Unfortunately, when I select Open Containing Folder, the folder still shows as completely empty even if I'm currently watching a video from that very folder. Further adding evidence to the not-deleted, just-missing theory, the data recovery software I'm using (Restoration) cannot find only find an handful of the missing files. If they were deleted, I could do a forensic recovery to get them back but since they're probably still somewhere on my computer, just out out of my reach, I can't find them. Under those circumstances, is there a way I can recover those files?

• MBR seems to be gone

  So, horror story for everyone. I bought two spanking new HDD's. MM!! Gbitage. I removed all my old HDD's, physically labelled them, and was preparing to install all new HDD's (fresh sys install included!) To make sure what HDD was what, I popped each OLD HDD (data filleD!) into a Thermaltake Blacx toaster.. surprisingly BOTH couldn't be read. I didn't have static on my hands! I'm certain of it. I touched metal, touched wood, before beginning this all. Thinking that was strage, I hauled up the new sys, installed Win XP (of course!) on the new HDD, and now the two OLD HDD's (data filled!) that were entered into the toaster cannot be read. And they had tons of data on them. I read about MBR's being nuked and it sounds like that is what it is. But I'm at a loss what to do. There are so many MBR recovery programs out there, I kind of feel overwhelmed. I don't want to lose my data by just pikcing one, yet it seems so close within reach, I'm not panicking anymore.. Anybody have a play by play that I could follow? I just don't want to spend $900 on data recovery centers if I can do this myself..

• RabbitMQ Management console not working

  I have started with RabbitMQ. I have a (windows) machine on which I installed two RabbitMQ nodes as a service - I have choose the nodename, port and service name for each of them. The services are running normally (i see that they are listening in a netstat-a). I have also installed management plugin with "rabbitmq-plugins enable rabbitmq_management" and restarted both services. But the plugin isn't running - I dont see it listening in a netstat and I can't connect to the management console via browser. Any idea what could be wrong? Is there any log to see what is goind on? • In need of assistance for recovering a lost partition

  The program that has worked for the most part is Active@ Partition Recovery. I'm so close but yet so far from recovering my data. Okay so here's what happens. In the following screenshot (blanked out a folder and filename with profanity in case some of you guys are at work :P), it detects the partition I accidentally deleted with ALL 100% of my data listed. Of course, I didn't write ANY data to that drive after I did this. But when I click "recover" and finishes the recovery process, in Windows I click on the partition that was just was just recovered... It's EMPTY. The program seems to be able to see my lost files, but when I recover the partition windows doesn't seem to think the same =( Things I tried: I tried running a chkdsk /r /f after I recovered the partition, apparently it couldn't find any errors. Tried using other software like TestDisk to recover the partition, but they (all) act similar to Windows in that it detects the (missing) partition but when I browse it there's no files. The partition is there along with all the file and data information. The sector information is also in the screenshot, is there any way I can use this to my advantage in recovering my data? Other information: Dualboot: Win8 / Ubuntu 12.10 x64 1TB Internal desktop drive, GPT Layout, NTFS formatted drive, 64K allocation size.

• I (stupidly) converted a TrueCrypt encrypted disk to GPT in Disk Management: now TrueCrypt won't mount it

  Backstory: After moving a Macrium Reflect disk image from my TrueCrypt external drive (with whole disk encryption) onto a unencrypted drive and using Windows PE with Macrium Reflect to restore my internal disk to the recovery image on the external unencrypted drive, my Windows 8 failed to boot. I then went back and also recovered the System Partition (looking now, it is currently EFI), but I still couldn't boot into my backup.. I was in a hurry to get online for something so I just did a clean install of Windows 8, without the backup.. After I installed Windows 8, I went into Disk Management out of curiosity to see if there were other partitions with Windows 8 that Macruim might have missed, and there is (by default) a Recovery Partition of 100MB. My memory of this is hazy, as I was trying to get up and running for an exam at 4 AM: Something in Disk Management prompted me to convert my encrypted external drive to GPT.. I have no idea why I did this, but I went ahead and allowed it to convert my TrueCrypt drive to GPT. Now, I can't mount the drive in TrueCrypt.. Disk Management sees it as Disk 1, Basic, and Unallocated. I tried converting it back to MBR with Disk Management, but no dice with TrueCrypt :( If I try to mount the disk in TrueCrypt I get the message: Incorrect password or not a TrueCrypt volume I should never have messed with a Truecrypt drive in Disk Management, but I did. I have important college work in that drive, and fear I have lost it forever. PLEASE HELP

• Users Password does not reset after successful login at the console but works fine with SSH

  The title says it all. I have my unsuccessful login attempts set to three. I purposefully fail logging in 2x, then when I SSH into the box successfully the 3rd time my count drops back to zero; exactly what should happen. But at the console I get failed login attempts EVEN for my successful login attempts. I am using RHEL 5.6 and no I am not able to upgrade. Maybe I could generate a new temporary random password and send it by e-mail but I think it is as risky as the above point. Can I send a url by e-mail for example http://mysite.com/token=xxxx where xxxx is a random token associated with the user. So when the user navigates to that url he/she can reset the password. Any ideas?
