On Monday night, Microsoft officially introduced the world to the latest edition to its product family: Internet Explorer 9. That makes March 14, 2011 (also known as PI day) the official birthday of Microsoft’s rebirth in the world of web browsing. Just like any big event, you take some time to celebrate. Here are a few things that you can do to celebrate the return of Internet Explorer. 1. Download It If you’re not a big partier, that’s fine. The one thing you can do (and definitely should) is download it and give it a shot. Sure, IE may have disappointed you in the past, but believe me when I say they really put the effort in this time. The absolute least you can do is give it a shot to see how it stands up against your favourite browser. 2. Get yourself an HTML5 Shirt One of the coolest, if not best parts of IE9 being released is that it officially introduces HTML5 as a fully supported platform from Microsoft. IE9 supports a lot of what is already defined in the HTML5 technical spec, which really demonstrates Microsoft’s support of the new standard. Since HTML5 is cool on the web, it means that it is cool to wear it too. Head over to html5shirt.com and get yourself, or your staff, or your whole family, an HTML5 shirt to show the real world that you are ready for the future of the web. 3. HTML5-ify Something Okay, so maybe a shirt isn’t enough for you. Maybe you need start using HTML5 for real. Help Kill Old IE and Upgrade your Organization See this? This is sad. Upgrading web browsers in an large enterprise or organization is not a trivial task. A lot of companies will use the excuse of not having the resources to upgrade legacy web applications they were built for a specific version of IE and it doesn’t render correctly in legacy browsers. Well, it’s time to stop the excuses. IE9 allows you to define what version of Internet Explorer you would like it to emulate. It takes minimal effort for the developer, and will get rid of the excuses.   • Unity is using something that looks like Emerald instead of the correct theme (like Metacity)

    I just upgraded my netbook thus: Lucid - Maverick - Natty. (I skipped Maverick other than as an upgrade step due to issues with Unity.) Now, I seem to be stuck with something that looks like Emerald but apparently isn't (see note below). Compiz is running, as is gtk-window-decorator, but my title bars aren't following Ubuntu's theme. I was using the Ambiance theme with no problems until the upgrade to Natty. Here's a screenshot: How can I get the default theme? Note: I never installed Emerald, and as far as I can tell it isn't installed. There's no running process containing the string emerald. So I'm not sure where gtk-window-decorator is getting its configuration from.

  • After upgrading to 13.04 Unity interface is not showing

    I've upgraded to Raring last night. The upgrade itself went okay, no errors. But when I rebooted the computer afterwards and logged in to my Unity session, all I could see was the Desktop background (together with Desktop icons), and no Unity interface. The Super button shortcut wasn't showing the Dash, there was no top panel etc. Please see the screenshot. As a hint, I'm suspecting it's got something to do with my switchable graphics. I'm running Ubuntu on Acer Aspire AS5830TG with nVidia GT540M and an Intel integrated card. In 12.10 I was using Bumblebee to manage the graphic card switching. During the upgrade I saw something related to nvidia had to be uninstalled, but didn't pay much attention to it. I can't be sure if it has anything to do with my problem though. What could possibly go wrong?

I have added the PPA and run the update and upgrade commands but I still have Thunar 1.2.3 In Synaptic, Thunar looks ready for upgrade: It asks to uninstall some XFCE stuff that I might hope to reinstall later but then something is fishy Is this new version limited to the Xfce desktop? Also, now, when I try Update Manager, I get this: and ...unless I remove the xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12 PPAs. So, removing Thunar in Synaptic and all that seems related to it, and then adding those PPAs, and trying to install Thunar, the following info emerges: What is to be done?

  • Slow wifi after upgrading kubuntu 13.04 to 13.10

    After upgrading from kubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 suddenly my wifi connection is very slow. Ping times are varying from 200 up to 1500 ms to www.google.nl. When I connect my ethernet cable they drop to normal times like 8 or 9 ms. Anyone experiencing the same problem or know a solution I can try? During the upgrade process a few times they asked whether I wanted to keep or replace some kind of configuration file. I'm not sure anymore which file it was, but maybe this has something to do with it. Before the upgrade both wired and wireless connection worked perfect.

  • freebsd-update from 8.3-RELEASE to 9.0-RELEASE: How to deal with dozens of diffs?

    I am upgrading a FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE system to FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE using freebsd-update. This is my first time performing a major version upgrade in FreeBSD. At one point in the process, freebsd-update performs a diff on files which are different then what is expected for the 9.0-RELEASE. It compares the current version on the system with the new changes added from 9.0-RELEASE. There are dozens of files in the list. Thus, I am presented with dozens and dozens of diffs which open in a vi window and look like this: The following file could not be merged automatically: /etc/ntp.conf Press Enter to edit this file in vi and resolve the conflicts manually... ### vi window opens <<<<<<< current version driftfile /etc/ntp/drift ======= # # $FreeBSD: release/9.0.0/etc/ntp.conf 195652 2009-07-13 05:51:33Z dwmalone $ # # Default NTP servers for the FreeBSD operating system. # # Don't forget to enable ntpd in /etc/rc.conf with: # ntpd_enable="YES" # # The driftfile is by default /var/db/ntpd.drift, check # /etc/defaults/rc.conf on how to change the location. # >>>>>>> 9.0-RELEASE restrict default notrust nomodify ignore And so on. This requires that I manually edit each file and remove the strings like <<<<<<< current version >>>>>>> 9.0-RELEASE and =======. As I discovered afterwards, if I don't remove these strings, they end up in the file afterwards. There are dozens of files which differ between 8.3 and 9.0, and I have a dozen local modifications myself. It appears that freebsd-update is using a diff, sdiff or mergemaster function of some sort, but I can't tell what it is doing exactly. Processing these files is tedious. Is there a way that I can just say "Accept new version" or "keep old version" or "Your merge is correct"? There has got to be an easier way to deal with these files. I must be missing something. This isn't a huge problem for one machine, but eventually I'll be doing this dozens of times and I want to find an easier way.

I'm trying to upgrade to 8.1 preview, so I downloaded the 64 bits ISO of Windows 8.1 preview (french):fr_windows_8.1_preview_x64_dvd_2358804.iso My I start the setup from the media, the setup does not propose me to upgrade and keep my applications. Only Keep personal files only and Keep nothing are available. When I read the technet page Supported Upgrade Path, upgrading and keeping everything should be proposed. Why can't I upgrade? Do I missed something?

  • After Upgrading to 12.04 the Kernel won't Initiate

    I had 11.10 and tried to upgrade recently, via the installer pop-up reminder. Afterwards it would not boot, citing an issue with the kernel. So I've setup a 12.04 installation USB, which appears to work fine. The problem is it doesn't provide an upgrade option, just format and install or install alongside the current broken kernel. I believe I should be able to still get the information from the broken OS after installing alongside, but if there is a way to fix this more directly that would be preferable.
