  • a young intellect asks: Python or Ruby for freelance?

    - by Sophia
Hello, I'm Sophia. I have an interest in self-learning either Python, or Ruby. The primary reason for my interest is to make my life more stable by having freelance work = $. It seems that programming offers a way for me to escape my condition of poverty (I'm on the edge of homelessness right now) while at the same time making it possible for me to go to uni. I intend on being a math/philosophy major. I have messed with Python a little bit in the past, but it didn't click super well. The people who say I should choose Python say as much because it is considered a good first language/teaching language, and that it is general-purpose. The people who say I should choose Ruby point out that I'm a very right-brained thinker, and having multiple ways to do something will make it much easier for me to write good code. So, basically, I'm starting this thread as a dialog with people who know more than I do, as an attempt to make the decision. :-) I've thought about asking this in stackoverflow, but they're much more strict about closing threads than here, and I'm sort of worried my thread will be closed. :/ TL;DR Python or Ruby for freelance work opportunities ($) as a first language? Additional question (if anyone cares to answer): I have a personal feeling that if I devote myself to learning, I'd be worth hiring for a project in about 8 weeks of work. I base this on a conservative estimate of my intellectual capacities, as well as possessing motivation to improve my life. Is my estimate necessarily inaccurate? random tidbit: I'm in Portland, OR I'll answer questions that are asked of me, if I can help the accuracy and insight contained within the dialog.

  • Ruby on Rails undefined method `camelize' for "app":String

    - by Lukasz
Hi! I just tried to play with Ruby on Rails on Snow Leopard. I was following this tutorial: http://developer.apple.com/tools/rubyonrails.html Whatever I try to do with rails I end up with: MacBook-Pro-lm:~ lukasz$ rails blog **undefined method `camelize' for "app":String** MacBook-Pro-lm:~ lukasz$ rails --help **undefined method `camelize' for "app":String** Really basic things... however - verbosing rails works: MacBook-Pro-lm:bin lukasz$ rails -v Rails 2.3.5 MacBook-Pro-lm:~ lukasz$ ruby -v ruby 1.8.7 (2010-01-10 patchlevel 249) [i686-darwin10] MacBook-Pro-lm:bin lukasz$ gem -v 1.3.7 So it seems I have installed and upgarded ruby (using macports), rubygems and rails successfully (according to terminal). There are also few other packages installed to support we development like passenger and mysql5, etc... I can find ruby installed in the /opt/local/bin directory. My environment PATH variable is: PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin The is something fishy going on. It must be some stupid basic problem. Google says that there could be a problem with ruby-iconv library but I can not find/install this package using port or gem commands. Plese help.... what am I missing here?

Will appreciate any thought! Thanks & Regards Note: I'm albe to connect using the same steps on mac 10.5

  • Multiple Ruby versions on one webserver?

    - by Legion
The Ideal Using rvm, it would be awesome to be able to have multiple Rubies on one webserver, and through some sort of server configuration, be able to assign Ruby versions to different Rails/Sinatra/etc apps on a per-project basis. I am aware, from rvm's documentation, that Passenger only works with one Ruby at a time. :( The Compromise Failing that, it would be nice to at least be able to concoct a way to be able to assign projects to a Ruby 1.8 or a Ruby 1.9 interpreter. I've read that using Nginx as a reverse proxy allows running Apache and Nginx on the same box. Would it then be possible to have Apache+Passenger using one Ruby, and Nginx+Passenger using a different one? Maybe use something other than Passenger with Nginx? Am I Barking Up the Wrong Tree? Am I missing a good solution to this issue? Am I walking into a nightmare configuration situation? Is what I want even viable, or is it necessary to run another box to run a separate Ruby version?

  • Ruby Gem Install question + answer(on windows vista Home Basic environment)

    - by Vamsi
Recently I am having problems with installing rcov gem on my windows (vista Home Basic environment), so after googling I found one solution and that is gem install rcov -v 0.8.1.1.0 #version that installs without errors gem update rcov #update to the latest version, in my case rcov-0.8.1.2.0-x86-mswin32 But this solution didn't worked on my colleague's system (windows xp) and after that we came to know about RubyInstaller devkit for winddows But that dev kit is not working on my vista, when I tried gem install rcov in my command prompt, it game me this error, C:\Users\Vamsi>gem install rcov Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing rcov: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. D:/Spritle/Programs/Ruby/bin/ruby.exe extconf.rb creating Makefile nmake 'nmake' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Gem files will remain installed in D:/Spritle/Programs/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/ge ms/rcov-0.9.8 for inspection. Results logged to D:/Spritle/Programs/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rcov-0.9.8/ext /rcovrt/gem_make.out So after that my colleague tried to install nmake as well but it was throwing some other error. Can some one suggest a better solution for solving this problems for all windows environments? I am aware of cygwin for windows but I am not sure that is an 100% solution either.

  • Ruby on Rails (Redmine) on Apache - 503 Error

    - by andrewtweber
I am running a Ruby on Rails application called Redmine. It's been working fine, but today it's giving a 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable error. (It was initially set up by an employee who is now gone.) I check the error log and it says: [Mon Nov 21 11:03:30 2011] [error] (111)Connection refused: proxy: HTTP: attempt to connect to 127.0.0.1:3000 (127.0.0.1) failed [Mon Nov 21 11:03:30 2011] [error] ap_proxy_connect_backend disabling worker for (127.0.0.1) Here's a chunk of my Apache config <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName redmine.{domain}.com RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/%{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ balancer://redminecluster%{REQUEST_URI} [P,QSA,L] </VirtualHost> <Proxy balancer://redminecluster> BalancerMember http://127.0.0.1:3000 </Proxy> I found this link: http://www.redmine.org/boards/2/topics/20561 which suggests I simply need to "start the redmine server." I've tried /etc/init.d/redmine start which gives me this output => Booting Mongrel => Rails 2.3.11 application starting on http://0.0.0.0:3000 The contents of /etc/init.d/redmine: cd /var/redmine sudo ruby script/server -d -e production One thing I immediately notice is that it says 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1. In addition, running top or ps -ef shows no record of a "mongrel" or "redmine" process. I've also tried restarting Apache before and after starting redmine. Not sure where to go from here.

When I first installed Ruby I installed it in a similar manner, from source prefixed at my local $HOME/usr directory. I tried removing each and every file make install installs, then re-installing, but that didn't help. Do you have an idea what the issue is and how to resolve it?

  • Ruby on Rails: url_for :back leads to NoMethodError for back_url

    - by Platinum Azure
Hi all, I'm trying to use url_for(:back) to create a redirect leading back to a previous page upon a user's logging in. I've had it working successfully for when the user just goes to the login page on his or her own. However, when the user is redirected to the login page due to accessing a page requiring that the user be authenticated, the redirect sends the user back to the page before the one s/he had tried to access with insufficient permissions. I'm trying to modify my login controller action to deal with the redirect properly. My plan is to have a query string parameter "redirect" that is used when a forced redirect occurs. In the controller, if that parameter exists that URL is used; otherwise, url_for(:back) is used, or if that doesn't work (due to lack of HTTP_REFERER), then the user is redirected to the site's home page. Here is the code snippet which is supposed to implement this logic: if params[:redirect] @url = params[:redirect] else @url = url_for :back @url ||= url_for :controller => "home", :action => "index" end The error I get is: NoMethodError in UsersController#login undefined method `back_url' for # RAILS_ROOT: [obscured] Application Trace | Framework Trace | Full Trace • Normal memory usage in Rails

    - by Erik
I'm wondering how much memory usage is normal for a ruby process in a rails application? I really need something to benchmark against. In my dev environment WEBrick a single ruby process uses about 61mb to handle 10 simultaneous requests going non stop. In my prod environment Apache2+Passenger starts 7 ruby processes to handle the same ammount of requests. Each of those processes also use up about 60mb. Is this normal? Also, where do I configure how many ruby processes Passenger can start? Or will it start as many as there is memory available for? Thank you! ps. Using Rails3 beta. ds.

  • Writing tests for Rails plugins

    - by Adam
I'm working on a plugin for Rails that would add limited in-memory caching to ActiveRecord's finders. The functionality itself is mature enough, but I can't for the life of me get unit tests to work with the plugin. I now have under vendor/plugins/my_plugin/test/my_plugin_test.rb a standard subclass of ActiveSupport::TestCase with a couple of basic tests. I try running 'rake test' from the plugin directory, and I have confirmed that this task loads the ruby file with the test case, but it doesn't actually run any of the tests. I followed the Rails plugin guide (http://guides.rubyonrails.org/plugins.html) where applicable, but it seems to be horribly outdated (it suggests things that Rails now do automatically, etc.) The only output I get is this: Kakadu:ingenious_record adam$ rake test (in /Users/adam/Sites/1_PRK/vendor/plugins/ingenious_record) /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/bin/ruby -Ilib:lib:test "/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.3/lib/rake/rake_test_loader.rb" "test/ingenious_record_test.rb" The simplest test case looks like this: require 'test_helper' require 'active_record' class IngeniousRecordTest < ActiveSupport::TestCase test "example" do assert false end end This should definitely produce at least some output, and the only test in that file should produce a failed assertion. Any ideas what I could do to get Rails to run my tests?

Let's say i have something like this; <p>ruby, rails, php, python, django and sinatra</p> and i would like to assign links to keywords like ruby and python, so the end results should look like this; <p><a href="http://www.ruby-lang.org">ruby</a>, rails, php, <a href="http://www.python.org">python</a>, django and sinatra</p> Any help or suggestion would be much appreciated!

  • How to resolve high CPU + excessive stat("/etc/localtime") and clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME) calls

    - by Yemster
    I've been experiencing really high CPU on a ruby on rails app (see stack below) and have been trying to diagnose the possible causes to no avail. Stack: ruby 1.9.3 rails 3.2.6 Apache/2.2.21 (Debian) Phusion Passenger 3.0.11 Whenever I run strace against the spiking Rack process PID (see Top excerpt below), I am seeing a tonne of stat("/etc/localtime") and clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME) calls and have no idea how to stop these. Excerpt from Top showin running PID: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 11674 www-user 20 0 313m 182m 5076 R 99 2.3 63:04.60 Rack: /var/www/my_rails_app/current 11634 www-user 20 0 411m 216m 5144 S 10 2.7 197:55.63 Rack: /var/www/my_rails_app/current Strace snippet below: [pid 11674] stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=118, ...}) = 0 [pid 11674] stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=118, ...}) = 0 [pid 11674] stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=118, ...}) = 0 [pid 11674] stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=118, ...}) = 0 [pid 11674] stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=118, ...}) = 0 [pid 11674] clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME, {1354058955, 141474018}) = 0 [pid 11674] clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME, {1354058955, 141577456}) = 0 [pid 11674] clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME, {1354058955, 143073982}) = 0 [pid 11674] poll([{fd=15, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}], 1, 0) = 0 (Timeout) [pid 11674] write(15, "b\0\0\0\3SELECT `images`.* FROM `ima"..., 102) = 102 [pid 11674] read(15, "\1\0\0\1\0229\0\0\2\3def\23myappy_productio"..., 16384) = 2063 [pid 11674] clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME, {1354058955, 144138035}) = 0 [pid 11674] stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=118, ...}) = 0 [pid 11674] stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=118, ...}) = 0 [pid 11674] stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=118, ...}) = 0 [pid 11674] stat("/etc/localtime", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=118, ...}) = 0 ... Things tried so far: Have tried setting time zone as recommended here Made no difference and issue still persists. Content of my /etc/localtime: TZif2UTCTZif2UTC UTC0 Have tried the recommended fix for the leapsecond bug: date -s 'date' No joy so far. I'm fresh out of ideas so any help/advice on how to diagnose or resolve would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I know when should I package my classes in Ruby?

    - by Omega
In Ruby, I'm creating a small game development framework. Just some personal project - a very small group of friends helping. Now I am in need of handling geometric concepts. Rectangles, Circles, Polygons, Vectors, Lines, etc. So I made a class for each of these. I'm stuck deciding whether I should package such classes in a module, such as Geometry. So I'd access them like Geometry::Rectangle, or just Rectangle if I include the module. Now then, my question isn't about this specific scenario. I'd like to know, when is it suitable to package similar classes into one module in Ruby? What factors should I consider? Amount of classes? Usage frequency? Complexity?
