• How do I set up my own proxy server?

  This website (abc.com) slowed access from our original IP address. How do I implement my own proxy server to hide my IP while browsing abc.com? Do I need special hardware/software combo to achieve this? If I can generate about 5 proxies and alternate amongst those 5 while browsing abc.com would be awesome. Please suggest. Thanks guys!

• Thread Local Storage and local method variables

  In c#, each thread has its own stack space. If this is the case, why is the following code not thread-safe? (It is stated that this code is thread-safe on this post: Locking in C# class Foo { private int count = 0; public void TrySomething() { count++; } } As count is an int (stack variable), surely this value would be isolated to an individual thread, on its own stack, and therefore thread-safe? I am probably missing something here, but I dont understand what is actually in Thread Local Storage if not stack-based variables for the thread?

• Web Service appears as website instead of developer web server

  I recently reimaged my PC and regrabbed one of our projects from Source Safe. In our solution we have a web service that normally runs on a server, however we can build the webservice on our localhost for debugging as well. However, now whenever I grab the project from source safe it is building the webservice as a website instead of a developer web server. This is causing a variety of issue, specifically I am no longer able to specify which port I would like that webservice to use. As a result I cannot connect to our database through my local webservice. How can I change the project in my solution that controls the webservice from a website to a developer web server? • Is it okay to pass injected EntityManagers to EJB bean's helper classes and use it?

  We have some JavaEE5 stateless EJB bean that passes the injected EntityManager to its helpers. Is this safe? It has worked well until now, but I found out some Oracle document that states its implementation of EntityManager is thread-safe. Now I wonder whether the reason we did not have issues until now, was only because the implementation we were using happened to be thread-safe (we use Oracle). @Stateless class SomeBean { @PersistenceContext private EntityManager em; private SomeHelper helper; @PostConstruct public void init(){ helper = new SomeHelper(em); } @Override public void business(){ helper.doSomethingWithEm(); } } Actually it makes sense.. If EntityManager is thread-unsafe, a container would have to do inercept business() this.em = newEntityManager(); business(); which will not propagate to its helper classes. If so, what is the best practice in this kind of a situation? Passing EntityManagerFactory instead of EntityManager?

I want to ensure that JS is always enabled while browsing any part of the plone site. While browsing, if JS is disabled, I can redirect to another page with tag to enable the JS in the browser and give a hlink to the site back if it is enabled. I am using Plone 4.1

  I recently asked a question on using volatile and was directed to read some very informative articles from Intel and others discussing memory barriers and their uses. After reading these articles I have become quite paranoid though. I have a 64-bit machine. Is it safe to memcpy into adjacent, non-overlapping regions of memory from multiple threads? For example, say I have a buffer: char buff[10]; Is it always safe for one thread to memcpy into the first 5 bytes while a second thread copies into the last 5 bytes? My gut reaction (and some simple tests) indicate that this is completely safe, but I have been unable to find documentation anywhere that can completely convince me.

  Please see the warning below taken from the StreamWriter class specification (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.io.streamwriter.aspx): "Any public static (Shared in Visual Basic) members of this type are thread safe. Any instance members are not guaranteed to be thread safe." I understand that a W3WC process contains two thread pools i.e. worker threads and I/O threads. A worker thread could contain many threads of its own (if the application creates its own System.Thread instances). Does the warning only relate to System.Threads or does it relate to worker threads and I/O threads as well I.e. as the instance variables of the streamwriter class are not thread safe then does this mean that there would be problems if multiple worker threads access it eg if two users on two different web clients attempt to write to the log file at the same time, then could one lock out the other?

• Offer access to a private page without login

  So I've been struggling with a nice and easy way to allow users to access a private page without asking them to fill out a login/password form. What I'm thinking about using right now is for each private page I generate a uniqueid (using php uniqid function) and then send the URI to the user. He would access his private page as "www.mywebsite.com/private_page/13ffa2c4a". I think it's relatively safe and user friendly, without asking too much of information. I thought maybe when the user access this page it would ask for it's e-mail just to be sure, but the best would be nothing at all. Is this really safe? I mean not internet banking safe, but enough for a simple access? Do you think there's a better solution? Thanks. :)

• What can Go chan do that a list cannot?

  I want to know in which situation Go chan makes code much simpler than using list or queue or array that is usually available in all languages. As it was stated by Rob Pike in one of his speeches about Go lexer, Go channels help to organize data flow between structures that are not homomorphic. I am interested in a simple Go code sample with chan that becomes MUCH more complicated in another language (for example C#) where chan is not available. I am not interested in samples that use chan just to increase performance by avoiding waiting of data between generating list and consuming the list (which can be solved by chunking) or as a way to organize thread safe queue or thread-safe communication (which can be easily solved by locking primitives). I am interested in a sample that makes code simpler structurally disregarding size of data. If such sample does not exist then sample where size of data matters. I guess desired sample would contain bi-directional communication between generator and consumer. Also if someone could add tag [channel] to the list of available tags, that would be great.

  New to Linux and having minor issues :/ . I followed this guide initially but did not recieve the proper output and did not show my ATI Radeon HD 5000 temp or fan speed. Then used this guide, same problems exhibited. No issues installing and no errors. I think its not reading i2c for some reason. The proprietary driver is installed and functioning correctly according fglrxinfo. I can use aticonfig commands and view both temp and fan. Any ideas on how to get it working under 'sensors'? To avoid this, you use the lock keyword, but if you use that in the wrong way, your code deadlocks. It's all a nightmare. Luckily, there's a better way - Actors. They're really easy to think about. They're really safe (if you follow a couple of simple rules).   I have Ubuntu 10.10 and using VirtualBox 3.2. As a Guest OS I have another Ubuntu in the VirtualBox. I am starting Guest Ubuntu automatically using following command once my Host Ubuntu boots: VBoxHeadless -startvm Ubuntu --vrdp on Then I can access to it with ssh or tsclient. Now I need to shutdown automatically Guest Ubuntu once I shutdown my Host Ubuntu. Does anybody know any safe method to automatically shutdown Guest Ubuntu with a command line? • How do I disable changing proxy settings?

  I've got several machines, running 14.04.1, for kids to access. Each machine has accounts for each kid, as well accounts for several adults. Although I've set a system wide proxy use policy, it doesn't get used by Chrome. Instead, I had to log into each kids account and set a proxy use policy, pointing to tinyproxy/dansguardian, for safe internet access. The problem is that, should the kids get an ounce of computer savvy, they'll figure out that they can launch the proxy settings config panel from Unity, then change the proxy settings to None, and completely bypass the "safe" internet scheme I've setup. Can anyone tell me how I can disable those user accounts from being able to modify their proxy settings (not the "system wide" ones... those arent used.. this is the per-user settings). Thanks

In fact all the top bar mini short cut icons have been amputated and crippled leaving them with no rights. This severely impacts on our custom aps., similar to FireFox bookmarks, which can no longer be right clicked to bring up a context menu. It is possible to disengage FF's File|Edit|... menu bar from the top by running it in safe-mode so the menu bar is resident in a window, restoring right clicks, but our aps. do not have "safe modes". How can right clicks in menu bars be restored? reference

  I'm in my mid twenties, and I'm in a safe, comfortable job as a Software Developer. The work environment is great, I'm well paid, the benefits are good. I enjoy my job. Some friends passed my name on to some guys starting a new company. I had some informal chats with them and they liked me. They've asked me to joint their start-up as tech lead, designing and building their product from scratch. They're fully funded, and they know what they're doing. Taking the job would require giving up my safe, enjoyable, relaxed job for a risky, stressful, hard one, albeit with the potential to be really great in future. Should I take the job?

• How often should saving to disk occur in an automatically saving text editor?

  I am developing a simple text editor and would like the application to save the text automatically. In other words, the user would never have to press a save button. I have seen other applications that do this, and was wondering how often is it safe to write files to disk? From a user experience standpoint, it seems that the more frequently this happens the better, but I am worried about performance and possible disk wear (especially on writes to SSDs). It seems like the operating system disk caching might help avoid these problems, but I also don't know if its safe to rely on that for an application like this. I was planning on writing the whole document to disk at each save, but this just seems terribly inefficient if the OS ends up writing it to disk to frequently, but relying on program unload may lose data in the case of a crash. Does anyone have any experience dealing with this that might be able to help?

• Graphics corrupt after upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04

  I'm stuck at the moment with an ubuntu that boots into an unusable white screen after upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04. I've tried booting into safe X mode but it just throws me back to the safe menu every time. Restore previous graphics driver, use default graphics configuration and set up new graphics configuration all don't work either. I've tried various methods of resetting the graphics from the command line, but none are working due to unmet dependencies. These cannot be fixed by doing the normal "apt-get -f install" because its saying there is a dpkg error in var/lib/dpkg/status (blank line relating to skype-wrapper). I haven't been able to find any other way to fix the dependencies yet. Can someone please give me some advice on what to do, I really don't want to go the re install route.
