  • Audio server with best API?

    I'm a web dev, working in a small studio with a couple of other devs and some crayon-munchers (or, "designers"). Like all the best and trendiest creative studios, we have tunes. Our tunes consists of a set of speakers that whoever wants to can plug into their machine, and DJ their little socks off via iTunes, Spotify, VLC or whatever their music player of choice happens to be. Obviously, this lacks finesse. What we WANT is this: a single, dedicated machine running some sort of audio player (ideally Win-based, but a Linux flavour isn't impossible), that exposes an API. We (ie: me and the other devs) want to write a web-based client onto it, that'll let us remotely do all sorts of funky stuff like generating on-the-fly genre-based playlists, and voting for tracks, and making tea. My question - and please forgive me if this isn't the place for such a question, I was going to ask on Stackoverflow but that didn't seem right either - is this: what's the best player to start with? What can do all of this? I know VLC can function as a streaming server, but know nothing of any API it may have. I'd rather chop my pinky off than use iTunes, but if it does what we want, then... Anyhow, thanks for reading. All comments and suggestions gratefully received.

  • Server Running but unable to log in to it

    I have a Windows Server 2003 server that is running sql server. Users can access the databases running on it fine, but I am unable to log on to it by remote desktop or directly at the machine. I am able to view the event logs remotely and I can't see anything that shouts out as being a problem. What options can people think of for regaining access to this server or finding out more information about the problem? I am able to reinstall the operating system but would like to leave that as a last resort.

  • What does SQL Server's BACKUPIO wait type mean?

    I'm using Sql Server 2008 ("R1"), with some maintenance plans that back up my databases to a network share. Some of my backup jobs show long waits of type "BACKUPIO". Of course it seems like this is an I/O subsystem limitation, but I'm skeptical. Perfmon stats for I/O on the production (source) server are well within normal trends for that server. The destination server shows a sustained 7MB/s write rate, which seems incredibly low, even for a slow disk. The network link is gigabit ethernet and nowhere near saturated. The few docs I've turned up about BACKUPIO indicate that it's not specifically a wait on I/O, surprisingly enough. This MSFT doc says it's abnormal unless you're using a tape drive, which I'm not. But it doesn't say (or I don't understand) exactly what resource is missing. http://www.docstoc.com/docs/24580659/Performance-Tuning-in-SQL-Server-2005 And this piece says it's not related to I/O performance at all. http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=686168&seqNum=5 "Note that BACKUPIO and IO_AUDIT_MUTEX are not related to IO performance." Anyway, does anyone know what BACKUPIO actually means and/or what I can do to diagnose or eliminate it?

  • Strange Windows Server 2008 R2 (FTP Server) Error - Caused by a specific combination of characters in the filename of uploaded file

    We are running Windows Server 2008 R2, which is setup to be a FTP server. Everything seemed to be working fine until one our our cilents started complaining about their uploads being halted with the message "Connection with server reset". Further diagnosis revealed that a specific combination of characters in the filename will cause a repeatable error. I am hoping that a form expert can confirm the error or perhaps provide a solution. This is an example filename that will always cause the error: REPORT_FILED_000000001 (extension does not matter) Any help would be greatly appreciated! We need files named like this to work properly with our FTP server.

  • How to allow simple file sharing on Windows Server 2008R2 through VPN

    We are a small, distributed company with a Windows Server 2008R2 installation. I would like to set up a way for our employees to connect securely to this server via VPN and then be able to map a network drive. I have gotten this to work somewhat by installing the Network Policy and Access Services Role on the server and using the default settings. I have also created a network share on the server. The problem is that our connectivity is sporadic (sometimes the service stops listening on the port or simply refuses to authorize correct credentials) and slow. I can always connect through VPN, but mapping is problematic. I would be grateful for the answer on how to accomplish this as well as some guidance on whether I am on the right track.     We have a Windows 8 machine that we installed SQL Server 2005 on first. We then uninstalled it and installed SQL Server 2012 - unsuccessfully. The installation wizard hung at the point where it says: SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu64 The event log showed the following error: The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with the following service-specific error: WARNING: You have until SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) to logoff. If you have not logged off at this time, your session will be disconnected, and any open files or devices you have open may lose data. We got the same error while trying to start the service. We tried uninstalling and re-installing but faced the same issue. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to log Windows server share connections?

    Can anyone make a suggestion for the best way to log connections and disconnections from Windows workstations to a Windows Server 2003 file share? We're having some issues with workstations that have a drive mapped to a server that seem to work fine for awhile and then suddenly appear to get disconnected from the server (with files open). Needless to say this causes some data corruption and error messages. It would help me to troubleshoot the problem if we could somehow monitor and log the session connections and disconnections, to attempt to correlate the connectivity issues with what actions the user is taking at the time and what the server is doing. I just haven't been able to find a way to do this. Specifically I'm talking about the same information that is displayed in the Computer Management control panel applet in the "System Tools|Shared Folders|Sessions" page. Thanks!

  • SQL SERVER – Simple Example to Configure Resource Governor – Introduction to Resource Governor

    Let us jump right away with question and answer mode. What is resource governor? Resource Governor is a feature which can manage SQL Server Workload and System Resource Consumption. We can limit the amount of CPU and memory consumption by limiting /governing /throttling on the SQL Server. Why is resource governor required? If there are different workloads running on SQL Server and each of the workload needs different resources or when workloads are competing for resources with each other and affecting the performance of the whole server resource governor is a very important task. What will be the real world example of need of resource governor? Here are two simple scenarios where the resource governor can be very useful. Scenario 1: A server which is running OLTP workload and various resource intensive reports on the same server. The ideal situation is where there are two servers which are data synced with each other and one server runs OLTP transactions and the second server runs all the resource intensive reports. However, not everybody has the luxury to set up this kind of environment. In case of the situation where reports and OLTP transactions are running on the same server, limiting the resources to the reporting workload it can be ensured that OTLP’s critical transaction is not throttled. Scenario 2: There are two DBAs in one organization. One DBA A runs critical queries for business and another DBA B is doing maintenance of the database. At any point in time the DBA A’s work should not be affected but at the same time DBA B should be allowed to work as well. The ideal situation is that when DBA B starts working he get some resources but he can’t get more than defined resources. Does SQL Server have any default resource governor component? Yes, SQL Server have two by default created resource governor component. 1) Internal –This is used by database engine exclusives and user have no control. 2) Default – This is used by all the workloads which are not assigned to any other group. What are the major components of the resource governor? Resource Pools Workload Groups Classification In simple words here is what the process of resource governor is. Create resource pool Create a workload group Create classification function based on the criteria specified Enable Resource Governor with classification function Let me further explain you the same with graphical image.   • WDS DHCP same server on Windows Server 2008

    I have been struggling with a problem on my Windows Server 2008 for the past 4 - 5 hours and cannot figure out whats wrong. I have tried pretty much everything that I found on google and all the links are purple. Hopefully you guys can help me. I am running a Windows Server 2008 Standard edition with the latest updates as of today. Furthermore I am running a Windows Server 2003. Both are virtual machines on my ESXi 5 server. My network is: 192.168.10.0/24 W2k8: 192.168.10.251 is the PDC running ADS, DHCP and WDS W2k3: 192.168.10.253 AND 192.168.1.175 running Routing and Remote Access and ISA 2006 Enterprise In my internal network (192.168.10.0/24) I have my client machine (192.168.10.10) that runs a VMWare Workstation. I am trying to deploy Windows 7 Home Premium to a virtual machine on my VMWorkstation via PXE. I have set the Workstation's VM network adapter to "bridged" so that it uses the physical network adapter and is connected to my internal network. The DHCP pool is configured to give IP addresses from 192.168.10.10-192.168.10.15 (works for normal clients and is not used up) When I start my VM with the PXE I get the error: PXE-E52:proxyDHCP offers were received. No DHCP offers were received Apperently this means "that means that WDS responded but the DHCP server did not." People suggested to direct the traffic to both WDS and DHCP on the router, since everything is on the same subnet there is no need for that as the broadcast is seen by everyone (WDS and DHCP) No reservation for the virtual mac addrs is made on the DHCP. Furthermore it was suggested to configure the DHCP options: Option 60= PXEClient Option 66= WDS server name or IP address Option 67= Boot file name However, this is not recommended by Microsoft, I tried it and it did not solve my problem. The configuration on the WDS (My System is German therefore the actual naming might be different): PXE response tab: PXE responses is set to "ALL (known and unknown)" DHCP Tab: Do not listen to port 67 is NOT ticked - if I tick this I do not get any responses and the PXE errors gets PXE-E51 that neither DHCP or proxyDHCP were received DHCP-Option 60 for "PXEClient" is ticked The confusing part here is that it is advised in the tab to tick the first option since it is on the same server. Network Configuration Tab: Use the following IP-Address range for Multicast-IP-Address: 224.0.1.0 - 224.0.10.0 Thats not the default one, however it is in the allowed range. The UDP port range is the default since it is not advised to change them. I tried to change the "networkprofile" from 100mbits/1gbits and custom. I am running a 1gbit network with CAT6 cables and 1gbit netgear switch 5 ports. Everything is configured to use 1gbit. The WDS is authorised for the DHCP server. My ISA 2006 configuration: For the internal networking i have configured the following policy array: Allow protocols on internal network including the w2k3 host: 67,68,53,ICMP, 4011 UDP receive, 64001-6500 UDP send receive, 69 UDP send Routing and Remote Access I tried the DHCP relay agent configuration that was suggested as well, but that did not work I would highly appreciate anykind of help because I am pretty much done here with my nerves.     As root, using a reasonably default .profile and .shrc and an empty tmux.conf, I am unable to split the window horizontally. There are a number of cases to consider so I'll list them clearly. root's .profile and .shrc, tmux works perfectly. Occasionally (twice out of the 50 or so times I've tested it), the splitting will work fine once in a session. (This happened for example when I ran ktrace on tmux, which I can also post) To explain the 'suddenly' part of the title: when I started my newly updated mysql56-server, tmux immediately exited and lost the session. Recently I changed architectures, from FreeBSD 10.0 i386 to amd64, and I am still working through shared library incompatibilities. I suspect that this could be involved, but I can't imagine how an incompatibility of this sort could result in such a specific, isolated failure.

  • Can't install SQL Express 2008R2- caspol.exe application error - the application failed to initialize

    I'm trying to install SQL Server Express 2008 R2 on Windows 2003 Server (enterprise edition). I get the following error message: Title: caspol.exe - Application Error Text: The application failed to initialize properly (0x000007b), Click on OK to terminate the application. I get the same error message both when downloading the installer and running it and when using the web platform installer. All the pages on the internet I've found about similar problem say it's a corrupt .net installation issue - This server runs multiple .net apps and I've never had any problems with any of them. I've uninstalled and reinstalled .net (causing a painful outage) and nothing changed. Does anyone here has any idea what might cause this? Update 1: additional information I forgot to include: 32bit version of Windows running in a virtual machine, no anti virus Update 2: when running caspol.exe from the command line I get the same error

    I have just installed php 5.3 on windows server 2008 R2 running IIS7. phpinfo() is working fine. now I want to see if I have correctly installed the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server. I downloaded from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=80E44913-24B4-4113-8807-CAAE6CF2CA05#RelatedResources I have dropped the 2 dlls (php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts_vc9.dll and php_sqlsrv_53_nts_vc9.dll) into the PHP\ext folder and referenced them in the php.ini I restarted the server. But when I run phpinfo() I'm not seeing any reference to sqlsrv is that normal? or should there also be a section of phpinfo() dedicated to these sqlsrv extensions? Error logging is on but there are no errors coming up in the php-errors.log referring to sqlsrv. Both files php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts_vc9.dll and php_sqlsrv_53_nts_vc9.dll have been added (non thread safe version for IIS), php5.dll is present in the php install folder. Thanks for any pointers.

  • 5 year old server upgrade

    I am looking to upgrade a server for a web app. Currently the application is running very sluggish. We've made some adjustments to mysql (that's another issue in itself) and made some adjustments so that heaviest quires get run on a copy of the database on another server was have as a backup, however this will not last that much longer and we are looking to upgrade. Currently the servers CPUs are (4) Intel(R) XEON(TM) CPU 2.00GHz, with 1 gig of ram. The database is 442.5 MiB, with about 1,743,808 records. There are two parts of the program, the one, side a, inserts and updates most of the data. Side b, reads the data and does some minor updates. Currently our biggest day for side a are 800 users (of 40,000 users all year) imputing the system. And our Side b is currently unknown, however we have a total of 1000 clients. The system is most likely going to cap out at 5000 side b clients, with about a year 300,000 side a users. The current database is 5 years old, so we can most likely expect the database to grow pretty rapidly, possibly double each year (which we can most likely archive older records if it comes to that). So with that being said, should we get a server for each side of the app, side a being the master, side b being the slave, any updates made on side b are router to side a. So the question is should i get 2 of these or 1. 2 x Intel Nehalem Xeon E5520 2.26Ghz (8 Cores) 12GB DDRIII Memory 500GB SATAII HDD 100Mbps Port Speed And Naturally I would need to have a redundant backup so it could potentially be 4 of them.
