  What is the purpose of blocking/dropping inbound ICMP traffic on a public web server? Is it common for it be blocked? I had to test if a server was accessible from various locations (tested on various servers located in different states/countries). I'd rely on ping as a quick & reliable method of determining if a server was online/network-accessible. After not receiving a response on a couple boxes, I tried using lynx to load the site, and it worked.

• Cheap machine with Xen to have more than one personal dev servers with RAID option?

  I do not have a lot of money so when I need a personal dev servers I decided I will use Xen on one machine to run various OS's. Although, I really like Dell Zino (http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/inspiron-zino-hd/pd.aspx?refid=inspiron-zino-hd&cs=19&s=dhs) as a very economical and compact PC which can be scaled to 8GB of RAM, I do not know how to have a RAID setup, for the backup. Is there an economical way to add a RAID setup to Dell Zino or I would have to invest in a proper box for that?   I've noticed that email forwarding to an address seems not to work if I send an email from the address to which I am forwarding email. This happens for GMail and Fasthosts mail servers. e.g I send an email to [email protected] from [email protected] , [email protected] is set to forward to [email protected] and the email never arrives. I realise this seems logical but it is a potential cause of confusion when testing email functionality in a web application (for me, anyway ;-). I would just like to know if this is standard for all MTA software so I can avoid confusing myself.

• Possible to use DRBD on two ESXi virtualized servers?

  I have two servers (attached disks have been set up as hardware RAID1 for disk device level failure resilience). Here is the setup in my mind: 1) Install ESXi on each of the physical server, M1, M2; 2) Start one VM on each of the ESXi virtualized physical server V1, V2; 3) Install the DRDB drivers within V1 and V2. Essentially, this is a "virtualizing machine running DRBD in the VM's instead of bare metal hardware" idea. My question is whether the above setup can achieve the same "networked RAID1" goal that DRDB can achieve in the bare-metal physical machines (http://www.drbd.org/). Thanks. • How to troubleshoot slow powerconnect 62xx management interface

  Our Dell Powerconnect 62xx switches have a very high packetloss on the management interface. I presume this is caused by a new appliance which uses multicast for communication but I am not sure. Our network setup is following: servers a - Dell PC6248 | servers b - Dell PC6248 |- juniper core router servers c - Dell PC6248 | What we see is that the multicast traffic arrives at all servers (but only the servers b use the multicast) and I fear that this multicast traffic floods the switch management interface. The switches' management interfaces are reachable via vlan101, all other traffic is sent over other vlans. When I tcpdump on one of the 2 servers with a vlan 101 ip address, I only get a few arp requests but almost nothing. When I try to ping between these 2 servers, it works like a charm. I would like to know what a good way is to troubleshoot this problem and maybe help me understand what is going wrong on that subnet.

  What good software is available (free or not free) to help me keep track of information relating to hundreds of servers, their relationships to each other (parent/child, category, type), and information on connecting to them, as well as possibly showing a picture or grid of some kind that allows me to report these relationships and key information to my supervisor. I am trying to avoid the "spreadsheet solution" or "visio solution" because I want to share this information and make changes with other persons in my server team. In other words, the solution I am looking for is a cross between a spreadsheet solution and a visio solution, providing both graphing and configuration information WITHOUT monitoring, and in a consistent format.

• Is there a way to obtain a Dell server's RAID configuration/level using only winrm/wsman? (ESXi servers)

  I've seen videos describing how to configure RAID using wsman/winrm commands run against a server's iDRAC, but I can't seem to find anything that will just give me the current configuration and RAID levels. Is this possible? What uri would I use? If it matters, this is being run against M610s. Edit: If there is an easier way to obtain this information by running a script against the iDRAC, I'm not opposed to switching my methods. EDIT: The server is running ESXi, so if there is a way to obtain this through the vSphere client or PowerCLI, I can do that too. Overall, I just need a way to obtain the RAID configuration for multiple servers without having to query against the actual server (eg: via the iDRAC).

• How to configure dnsmasq to forward multiple DNS servers?

  I'm now using public DNS over VPN to avoid some DNS pollution in China. But this come with a price that I can't take advantage of CDN. Is there a way to configure dnsmasq and let it query both DNS servers, both public one and ISP one, and return the IP with a lower metric? I knew it could be done by using server=/domain/server directive to assign a DNS server for a certain domain, but the problem is there are hundreds of them. So I have to figure out something generic. • Netcat UDP File Transfer Between Two Servers Times Out?

  I'm testing file transfer speeds between two Red Hat servers that are connected to the same switch within the data center and I decided to use netcat to eliminate protocol overhead as much as possible. Testing in TCP mode went well and I was wondering how UDP might fare. On my receiving (client) end, I ran this: nc -u -l 11225 -v > myfile.out And then on the sending (server) end I ran the following: cat myfile.out | nc -u myserver.foo.zzz.com 11225 -v The file I'm testing with is 38 GB but the transfer seems to stop at around 15 GB (one time at 14.9, another at 15.6). I've tested by adding a "-w 5000" just in case it's timing out but no joy. Adding the -v doesn't show anything except acknowledging that the connection occurred. No errors. So - any suggestions as to why would the transfer cease?

• Is a Service Bus a good option to communicate with multiple external servers?

  We are developing an application that communicates, via web services or TCP/IP sockets, with multiple servers (up to 50 different external companies). Basically, the exchanged messages are the same (XML), but depending on the inputs of our application we should call 1 or more external servers. The benefits we would expect of introducing a Service Bus in the architecture would be: 1- Remove the need to manage all point-to-point configurations (all the 50 endpoints); 2- Simplify the communication layer of our application by having only one server to talk to; Is a Service Bus a good architectural option for this scenario? What is the best (simplest) Service Bus for this kind of communication? I read a few MSDN articles on Azure Service Bus Relay, but it didn’t seem to fit our needs. Am I wrong? Thanks for your help.

  I'm sure this is an easy solution, I'm just not too familiar with how DNS works or if that's even related to this problem. If I'm running a web service on amazon ec2, distributed across many instances, how can I make it so a single domain name can be used to access the entire pool of servers, which will be changing from time to time? Since the instances may be present one second but gone the next (and vice versa), I need a way to randomly pick an active member of the cluster to route to. The updates would have to be instantaneous. Is this even possible, with dns caching and all?

  At a company I work for we have such a thing called "playlists" which are small files ~100-300 bytes each. There's about a million of them. About 100,000 of them get changed every hour. These playlists need to be uploaded to 10 other remote servers on different continents every hour and it needs to happen quick in under 2 mins ideally. It's very important that files that are deleted on the master are also deleted on all the replicas. We currently use Linux for our infrastructure. I was thinking about trying rsync with the -W option to copy whole files without comparing contents. I haven't tried it yet but maybe people who have more experience with rsync could tell me if it's a viable option? What other options are worth considering?

  We have Glassfish application server running in Linux servers. Each Glassfish installation hosts 3 domains. Each domain has a JVM configuration such as -Xms 1GB and -XmX 2GB. That means if all these three domains are running at max memory, server should be able to allocate total 6GB to the JVMs With that math,each of our server has 8GB RAM (2 GB Buffer) First of all - is this a good approach? I did not think so, because when we analyzed memory utilization on this server over past few months, it was only up to 1GB; Now there are requests to add an additional domain to these servers - does that mean to add additional 2 GB RAM just to be safe or based on trend, continue with whatever memory the server has?

  Our application originally used a single Apache server with mod_perl installed to serve up all HTTPS requests. Due to memory issues I've added a lighter Apache installation and used ProxyPass to hand off the Perl requests to the mod_perl enabled server. We currently have an SSL certificate installed on the mod_perl server but I'm struggling to understand whether we need a certificate for both servers or only the lightweight server which is receiving the original requests. Or can a certificate be used for more than one server on a single machine? Thanks in advance for any help/pointers.

  I'm trying to set up my own vps hosting. It wont be a paid service, just an experiment for me and some nerdy friends. What I'd like to be able to do is this: Run multiple virtual servers on 1 external IP. These servers can run anything from Minecraft servers to simple http servers. They will also need to be accessible thru SSH. What I don't get is how I can address these servers using domain names. I've done some research and found out that I could use Vhosts with Apache. However this only applies to http servers. It was also suggested I'd use a reverse proxy(squid) but this also only applies to http requests. I could just use different ports for different servers, but thats not ideal and not what I want. Can someone suggest a setup? Maybe some tutorials or anything.

Our old hardware will be scrapped, we want to copy all AD users/computers to new machine and keep current domain name. I never done this before. What are the best practices? Is it better if we get a contractor to do it for us? I guess best way to start is to build new servers, copy data, take old server down and put new server online. My gut says we would need to re-join all computers. Is that correct? Any input appreciated.

  Hi, We're writing a web-based tool to configure our services provided by multiple servers. This includes interfaces configuration, dhcp configs etc. etc. Having configs in database and views that generate proper output, how to send it/make it available for servers? I'm thinking about sending it through scp and invoking reload command to services through ssh. I'm also thinking about using Func to do all the job, as this is Python tool and will seemingly integrate with python-based (django) config tool. Any other proposals?
