• 12.04: Apt-Get Update: failure to fetch; can't connect to any sources

  I realize there are dozens of "apt-get update: failure to fetch" questions (I read through all I could find), but my present circumstance is unique to 12.04 and it affects all sources; not just launchpad. Additionally, I've tried several different servers in Europe and the U.S. as well as the "main server" (wherever that is) and they all yield the same result: I can't connect to any software sources. Additionally, I'm fairly certain the problem stems from the upgrade from 11.10-12.04 I performed this morning, as updates worked immediately before. Updates from the Update Manager worked fine and I could download some things (mutter) from the Software Center without incident, which makes me think I can connect to some subset of the Ubuntu servers (however, several other Ubuntu servers--like extras--and some canonical servers are listed as 'unable to connect'). • How to configure web proxy for Jing

  Jing is great. But it won't start unless it can phone the mother ship. My internet access is via corporate web proxy. Jing doesn't seem to offer any way of configuring its connection to the internet. You'd think it would just use the windows internet connection settings that work for browsing, but no dice. Anyone solve this problem? Maybe there are some configuration files or registry settings that would fix this? Thanks!

  Morning, We are using SSRS (2005) and have a ASP.NET frontend using the SSRS WebControl. I've boiled the problem down the time it takes for one particular report to be generated is greater than the timeout on the proxy server. It looks like the way the SSRS web control tries to do things is by performing an HTTP request for the report, however the problem with this is the request can timeout potentially before the report has generated. Looking at the HTTP traffic the response is a 504 (gateway timeout). Is there a way to increase the timeout or change SSRS WebControl to use more robust polling mechanism (which isn't dependant on the timeout of the HTTP request). I could be wrong but I don't think ServerReport.Timeout property would resolve the issue we are seeing? Any thoughts? Philip

  I can't ping google.com with my virtual ubuntu 12.04 server. I have set up a proxy URL in my /etc/apt/apt.conf file and it says Aquire::http::proxy http://urlname.com:9999; Now, I don't know a lot about how the proxy works, but I do know when we use it on windows VMachines it's a pac script that we place in internet explorer LAN settings and it automatically detects the script and gives internet access. I tried including the 9999/proxy.pac in the apt.conf URL and it didn't seem to work any better. Would ubuntu know how to handle a proxy.pac assuming it was created for windows? Should my URL include the .pac or just end after the port numbers? I've tried both without sucess, but I would like to know. A quick test to ping a fellow co-workers' PC was sucessful. So I can see network computers, but not google. or other internet sources.

Here's what I've tried so far (and so far am failing): I'm running chrome and lucid lynx ubuntu. I chose TREX cause I thought watir might be making use of PROXY or something.   Hello -- Using Application Request Routing I have IIS 7.5 set up as a reverse proxy to a Mongrel service which is serving a rails app. IIS is set up to use Windows Auth and is working but I cannot access the REMOTE_USER variable in the rails app to get at current user's identity. I have inspected the request object in rails and I don't have any other variables like LOGON_USER, HTTP_REMOTE_USER, AUTH_USER, etc. I am trying to find a way to inject the REMOTE_USER variable into Mongrel's server variables. This post describes what I am looking for using mod_rewrite on Apache but I am having trouble recreating this rule for iis. this is the rewrite rule from the post mentioned above for Apache RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{LA-U:REMOTE_USER} (.+) RewriteRule . - [E=RU:%1] Header add X-Forwarded-User %{RU}e I tried reproducing the rule in IIS and got a URL Rewrite Module error ("The condition's expression "%{LA-U:REMOTE_USER}" is invalid."). Unfortunately, by changing this setting I now get a Response of: HTTP/1.1 502 Connection failed Edit: If it helps, the app "Charles" shows me WAY more information than Fiddler, but I really want to figure out Fiddler since I like it better.

  I hope someone can follow this and I'll explain as best I can. I'm trying to forward all traffic from port 6999 on x.x.x.224, through an ssh tunnel, and onto port 7000 on x.x.x.218. Here is some ASCII art: |browser|-----|Squid on x.x.x.224|------|ssh tunnel|------<satellite link>-----|Squid on x.x.x.218|-----|www| 3128 6999 7000 80 When I remove the ssh tunnel, everything works fine. The idea is to turn off encryption on the ssh tunnel (to save bandwidth) and turn on maximum compression (to save more bandwidth). This is because it's a satellite link. Here's the ssh tunnel I've been using: ssh -C -f -C -o CompressionLevel=9 -o Cipher=none [email protected] -L 7000:172.16.1.224:6999 -N The trouble is, I don't know how to get data from Squid on x.x.x.224 into the ssh tunnel? Am I going about this the wrong way? Should I create an ssh tunnel on x.x.x.218? I use iptables to stop squid on x.x.x.224 from reading port 80, but to feed from port 6999 instead (i.e. via the ssh tunnel). Do I need another iptables rule? Any comments greatly appreciated. • How does the PPA fit into the scenario of publishing an application to the Ubuntu Software Center?

  I've been going through docs for the past couple of hours but I haven't understood what the PPA is? I have a cross-platform Java application that I'd like to publish to the Ubuntu Software Center. My application is open-source and I'm using Github. Apparently, publishing applications to the store isn't as simple as uploading a deb package - am I right? I need to create an account on Launchpad and put all my code there. I don't intend to move from Git to Bzr merely for the sake of publishing to the app store but luckily, one is able to set up source-code mirroring from Github to Launchpad. Since my application is still very premature, it'll have updates fairly often. When I build my application on my machine, do I simply go my Ubuntu App Developer page and upload the new DEB package or do they build my application from source? What exactly is the PPA for? I don't think I'll need too many of the Launchpad features so I'd like to stick to Github if possible. (Publishing for Ubuntu really isn't trivial. I can see why there are so many developers out there who haven't published their applications to the Ubuntu Software Center. Publishing an Android applications has been the easiest so far.)

  I'm trying to test a fancy traffic analyzer app, which I have running on port 8890. My current plan is to let any HTTP request come into Squid, on port 3128, and let it process the request, and then just before it sends the response back, use iptables to redirect the response packets (leaving port 3128) to port 8890. I've researched this all night, and tried many iptables commands, but I'm missing something and my hair is falling out. I thought something like this would work: iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp --sport 3128 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 8990 This rule gets created ok, but it never redirects anything. Is this even possible? If so, what iptables incantation could do it? If not, any idea what might work on a single host, given multiple remote browser clients?

  The scenario is that I have a Google compute node running Nginx as a reverse proxy to the google appengine. The appengine is used to service REST calls from an single page application (SPA). HTTPS is used to the Nginx front end from the Internet. Do I also need to make the traffic from the Nginx reverse proxy to the appengine secure by turning on HTTPS on the appengine? I would like to avoid the overhead of HTTPS between the proxy and the backend. My thinking was that once the traffic has arrived at Nginx encrypted, decrypted in Nginx, and then sent via the reverse proxy inside of Google's infrastructure it would be secure. Is it safe in this case to not use HTTPS?

• Blocking HTTPS and P2P Traffic

  I have a Debian server running at the gateway level on a LAN. This runs squid for creating block lists of websites - for eg. blocking social networking on the LAN. Also uses iptables. I am able to do a lot of things with squid & iptables, but a few things seem difficult to achieve. 1) If I block facebook through their http url, people can still access https://www.facebook.com because squid doesn't go through https traffic by default. However, if the users set the gateway IP address as proxy on their web browser, then https is also blocked. So I can do one thing - using iptables drop all outgoing 443 traffic, so that people are forced to set proxy on their browser in order to browse any HTTPS traffic. However, is there a better solution for this. 2) As the number of blocked urls increase in squid, I am planning to integrate squidguard. However, the good squidguard lists are not free for commercial use. Anyone knows of a good squidguard list which is free. 3) Block yahoo messenger, gtalk etc. There are so many ports on which these Instant Messenger softwares work. You need to drop lots of outgoing ports in iptables. However, new ports get added, so you have to keep adding them. And even if your list of ports is current, people can still use the web version of gtalk etc. 4) Blocking P2P. Haven't been able to figure out how to do this till now.

So as can be seen here for getting ivy.xml, I don’t need any proxy as its within our own network which cant be accesses when I set proxy. But on the other hand I am using ibiblio as well which is external to our network and works only with proxy. So above build.xml wont work in that case. Can somebody help here. I don’t need proxy while getting ivy.xml (as if I have proxy, ivy wont be able to find ivy file behind proxy from within the network), and I just need it when my resolver goes to public url.

  Hi, I have an issue where in I have defined dependancies in ivy.xml on our internal corporate svn. I am able to access this svn site without any proxy task in ant. While my dependencies resides on ibiblio, that’s something outside our corporate, and needs proxy inorder to download something. • How to connect through a proxy using Remote Desktop?

  So I've got a home server running Windows Server 2003. I use a dual network card setup and Routing and Remote Access to link the internal, private network to the external connection. The external connection hooks directly to my cable modem (so no routers or other devices sitting between). The problem I'm having is that I can't connect remotely from a location outside the house (so connecting to the server's external connection) to the server using either Remote Desktop or VNC. I have enabled both ports in Routing and Remote Access's firewall to allow access, and I have enabled Remote Desktop in Windows Server 2003. The odd thing is that I can access my home server's SVN repository and I can even ping the server's IP. I am using the IP to attempt to connect, though I use a dyndns.com provided name to connect to my SVN repository, so it shouldn't make a difference (I know the IP is getting resolved correctly). Any ideas on where to start diagnosing this one? I haven't seen anything in my server's event log. If any other info is needed, let me know. Thanks. UPDATE: One last piece of information: We use a proxy server at work, which I'm nearly 100% sure is the culprit. I have a workaround--if I connect to our VPN (even though I'm already inside the building) I am able to connect to my home server. This is with VNC. However, is there a way to connect through a proxy using Remote Desktop? ONE MORE UPDATE: Indeed, it was the http proxy I'm sitting behind at work that was causing the issue. An acceptable workaround is to use my VPN connection to bypass the proxy, and I'm in!
