• Dell XPS 420: Turning computer on, video ports showing static

  I have a Dell XPS 420 which i recently upgraded with a EVGA GTX 550TI and a 80GB SSD Drive. I converted this machine into a home theater PC. Which I've always had on. The computer wasn't responding, and so i restarted it and when it started, video ports showing static. I was getting static on my TV thru both DVI ports and the mini HDMI port. I assumed my video card had gone bad, but i completely replaced it and still the same behavior is occurring. I do not know how to diagnosis this issue. Any thoughts?

• Force the computer to always use current display settings

  So I'm having a terrible black screen problem with my new installation of Windows 8. The screen basically goes to black every time I turn it on or sleep, or connect to an external or monitor. I dont really know what steps actually cause the problem and cant seem to figure what steps allow the screen to come back, besides forcing restarts, going to sleep and waking up, and smashing Win + P. I have a strong feeling it's because the Switchable graphics I have (Intel HD + Radeon 5060), so I'm looking for a way to make the computer always use a specified mode (i.e the current mode I'm on, that does show stuff on the screen) and force it to use it everytime? Any ideas? EDIT: I've Installed all the latest drivers I've found. Tried most of the solutions around the web for this problem. Updated the BIOS to UEFI (from HP Support Assistant), etc. Laptop is an HP- Envy 14

• Different boot time for the same computer by different commands

  As far as I am aware, there are 3 ways to check the computer boot time in windows. And they should give the same time, just in different formats. Why do I get different times, where do these commands get their time? wmic os get lastBootUpTime | find "+120" 20140823002317.596695+120 systeminfo | find /i "boot time" System Boot Time: 23.8.2014, 0:23:17 net statistics server | find /i "statistics since" Statistics since 22.8.2014 18:21:30 The first two are the same (0:23), but the third is different (18:21), and also accurate. Why? At boot, all tree show the same, but at some point, they change. I am using windows 7 ultimate, 64bit.

  I'm trying to add shortcuts to folders in "My Computer". This .reg almost works, I can execute programs like EXPLORE.exe, but I want to open a folder in the same window. Can someone please point out how? • How to Acitvate Window 7 on second computer

  I bought Windows 7 Professional which I installed it on my laptop. Now i decide to move it to be on my desktop PC, so I uninstall the windows from my laptop which I returned to the original OS came with the laptop (Vista Business) and insall windows 7 on my desktop PC. The problem is I cannot activate my copy of windows 7 on the desktop PC. and every time I try to activate it I get the error message " The product key you typed cannot be used to activate windows on this computer" and the code of the error is: Code: 0xc004c008 Description: The activation server determined that the specified product key could not be used. Hoe can I solve this problem.

• Computer bluescreen-ing with 0x7A and 0xF4 errors

  Hiya, This computer is locking up for around 5-30 seconds before throwing Blue Screen of Death's with 0x7A and occasionally 0xF4 errors. The log files don't really show anything informative, and Windows Update doesn't show any new drivers for the HDD. Upon restart, it shows a "A disk error has occurred /n Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to continue", and to fix this I go into WinRE via the pendrive and run "bootsect /nt60 C: /force /mbr" and that seems to fix it so it boots. • bash process uses 90% CPU, comes back on computer restart

  I’ve replaced the old HDD of my late 2008 unibody MacBook (8 GB of RAM, running OS X 10.7.4) with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD. After doing this, I've installed Lion and restored my data from a Time Machine backup. Everything is fine, except for a process named “bash” that permanently uses about 90 % CPU. If I kill it via Activity Monitor, everything goes back to normal, but unfortunately the process comes back every time I restart the computer. I've tried do zap the PRAM, reinstall 10.7.4 from the combo package, and even simply wait for more than 2 hours, but the problem is still here.

  I have this HUGELY irritating problem on Windows 7 (x64). Whenever I click on ANY link (that exists on a Word document, excel or Outlook), I get an alert box with the message: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer" I have been scouring my settings and the internet for a solution, but to no avail. Has anybody else encounted this problem? It even happens when I click anchors in word documents i.e. I can't even click on an entry in a Table of Contents to go to the appropriate page - I get this same error then. Is this a Windows 7 thing? Anyway to turn this off?

• Windows 8 cloned drive in 2nd computer

  I did the Windows 8 Pro upgrade machine w/ 64GB SSD. Finding 64GB not enough, I ordered a 128 GB SSD (Samsung 830) while planning to use CloneZilla to clone the Windows 8 OS to it. I might try using the 64GB SSD (with the Windows 8 upgrade on it) as a boot drive in a backup machine. I understand that I need to do some registry work to make it happy about the SSD 'transplant,' but I am worried about having to register the same activation key on 2 computers. Am I at high risk of getting 'deactivated'? Note that the backup machine is only used when primary computer is off.

  I have a few friends which keep on coming to me every month to format their laptops and then reinstall Windows. This is time consuming. Is there any way that I can make an image of their full system on my Harddrive and then restore to their Laptop from my computer? Edit: What I want is I have the image of the whole laptop on my desktop. The laptop is formatted with no OS. I have no CD/DVD to put in laptop (as the image is 15GB). How will I trasfer the image from my desktop to the laptop without using CD/DVD? Any option for booting via network, etc?

• Weird problem, special characters coming after formatting the hard drive, computer isn't starting 0_

  Hya friends , Last night my computer was working fine. But today when i came back from college and started it , it was starting fine but after sometime it's getting restarted , again and again getting restarted at different points , so i tried to boot it in safe mode but same problem. Now after all this , i finally decided to format the drive C (it is in 80 GB) and load new OS windows XP3. After formatting (quick format) and loading xp3 sufficient files , when it was getting rebooted for copying the actual os files , it hung and a weird screen came. • CPU fan twitching phase leds blinking - computer won't boot

  I have a big problem that I got today. Yesterday computer was "on" normally, I went to sleep without shutting it down. When I woke up, I heard a strange sound and was unable to bring it up from hibernate. I unplugged the PSU. When I plugged the PSU back in, the sound came back. When I opened the case, I saw the fan "twitching" like it is about to start and fan LEDs were blinking. Also, motherboard LEDs were blinking in the same pattern - the first green one has more of luminosity then others. When I cut down the power with 0/1 button on PSU, the fans continue to make sounds like the machine is trying to boot before the capacitors run out and the power dies. Does anyone have a clue what to do? I tried disassembling everything but that doesn't work. I will try with friend's PSU later today.

  I ran into a rather puzzling problem, trying to install Vuze 4.2.0.2 on my Windows 7. I have a Java 6 JDK 64bit, but Vuze complains that it can't find a correct 32bit JRE. Yet, as far as I know it shouldn't matter which Java is installed on the computer. (See also these answers). Now I was wondering : if it makes sense running a 32bit and a 64bit Java on the same machine, Whether that is possible, and if so what I should pay attention to in order to make sure that the correct Java is found. Thank you in advance PS : I have my reasons no to use the latest Vuze, so please don't tell me to update Vuze. I know.

• Windows 7 Computer Maintenance - Restore removed Desktop Shortcuts

  I'm aware about the inbuilt nightmate 'tool' of Microsofts which is making every network administrators job a nightmare (if left turned on). In short it'll happily delete every desktop shortcut to a network resource. We have it disabled by default. My question is related to recovering these shortcuts, Windows doesn't seem to dump them into the Recycle Bin and although you can 'restore previous versions' of the Desktop folder, you are unable to do it with the user logged in... Rather a problem if you only have the 1 user account. We have a user who (although the 'Computer Maintenance' tool is turned off) had it come up in 'Action Centre' and chose to run it. I've been unable to reproduce it, but the tool has certainly run (and removed 24 shortcuts from her desktop) although it is still saying 'Windows is not checking your system for maintenance problems'. ?! Very fustrating! Any ideas if these shortcuts are backed up/moved elsewhere so i can easily find and restore them?

• Play system sounds from one computer through another computer's speakers?

  I have a Mac and a Windows PC at work. I use both at the same time with Synergy and SynergyKM, which is a great setup for me. The Mac has built-in speakers and the PC has a sound card, but no speakers. I don't want to get speakers for use at work; instead I'd rather just have all sounds from both computers play through the Mac's speakers. Is there some sort of audio service I can run on each computer to accomplish that? I would want: System alert sounds, like you configure in the Control Panel Sounds from videos in a web browser, including from Flash

• Computer not displaying anything

  The computer in question worked last week. It's brand new, never been connected to the internet, up-to-date parts, etc. Last week, I installed some 3D software on it, then shut it down and waited for the license files that arrived this week. I've done this to 4 other PCs with the same hardware and software. I've tried: Hooking it up to 3 different monitors using different video cables 2 other graphics cards and a handful of other things like switching which port it's plugged into before and after a restart. I have the driver disc, and a windows reinstallation disc, but they won't do me any good because no display at all for any interval of time. All the fans are moving: psu, gfx, cpu etc, so I don't believe it's a power issue. Here are the specs I know of: 4GB RAM 8800 GTX 700w PSU Intel dual core (not sure of model) Anyways, I'm open to ideas.

  I have a really strange problem here. I have a Asus Zenbook Prime running Windows 7. Whenever I put it to sleep and I have Pandora open (but paused) in my web browser, several hours later the computer turns itself back on and Pandora will unpause itself and start playing. (More often than not this happens at 3AM in the morning so I am less than pleased.) What the heck is going on here? I've never even heard of this happening before...

• Computer randomly shuts down with a fading alarm power button and CD drive

  I am currently experiencing something very very odd. Having build my PC myself, I have never had any issues (or anything heat related). A few moments ago my computer shut down very randomly and everything goes blank, when I looked down on my case's power button it was fading on and off in such way I've had never seen before. I noticed the CD drive all of a sudden also started blinking randomly. What do you guys think this problem is related to? It is definitely not a overheating issue and I am pretty sure my 600 watt power supply didn't blow because right now I am able to turn it on and boot up the PC but 20 seconds later it shuts down (sometimes doesn't shut down for 2 minutes). I have no idea what this is... • Cannot copy files from external USB HDD to computer

  Hello I have a HDD disk connected with a USB converter to my computer. It consists of two partitions, the first one is mounted automatically and I can grab all the files from it, but the second one I have to mount manually as a root in the command line, if I try to open it with nautilus it gives an error. The drive where the problem is is drive sdb1, sdb2 has the same settings but works fine. I am using Debian Wheezy. This is the fstab: /dev/sdb1 /media/usb0 auto defaults,gid=disk,umask=0777 0 0 /dev/sdb2 /media/usb1 auto defaults,gid=disk,umask=0777 0 0 And when I try to copy the files with this command (as root) cp -vr /media/usb0/* /home/user/Videos/ I get these types of errors: cp: reading `/media/usb0/.lang/file.ext': Permission denied cp: failed to extend `/home/user/Videos/.lang/file.ext': Permission denied How can I at least copy the files to my main HDD? I don't need to adjust them I only need to copy them!

We want to allow any computer in our office (mac, linux, windows) to output its video on the large display. Since some of the computers in the office are stationary, and it's not practical to run video cables everywhere, it would be preferable to make this all happen through the network.   Hi guys, First of all I would like to stress I'm beginner and probably I'm not doing something right. I replaced my old motherboard (AK35S20C Schuttle) with a new motherboard (Soltek SL-75DRV75). Unfortunately the replacement isn't working as expected. Symptoms are: The computer powers on, works less than a second and powers off. Then it powers on again and so on. It doesn't emit any sound, it looks like it resets very quickly. Do you have any suggestions what might be the problem?

• Facebook doesn't work on computer, but work on mobile device, both use the same router

  I have a very strange problem and I'm thinking that can be problem with dns or something similar, but not sure and don't know how to solve. My computer is connected to router and every site works fine except facebook (Chrome and Firefox). Chrome shows "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset." But, on mobile device witch is connected to the same router facebook works fine (Fb application and Delphin browser). Pinging facebook works fine. Clearing cookies and cache didn't help. Also, I performed antivirus and antimalware scan and there is nothing. What can be a problem?
