  We are considering migrating our site from flash to silverlight, and also building additional components in silverlight. However there is a strong argument that many people do not have silverlight on their computers, and will not or cannot install silverlight. Are there any official figures on how many computers have adopted silverlight, and is it a bad idea to build a company website with elements of silverlight on it? Please note I am not trying to be subjective here, I am looking for solid, official figures and also advice about whether this is considered in general by developers to be an acceptable deployment solution. I have to discuss this issue with my boss later.

• Screen capture from windows service

  I've got DirectShow based screen capture software. Internally it calls CopyScreenToBitmap function to grab screen. Then the picture is compressed by ffdshow. It works fine as a desktop application, but as window service, on certain computers it does not work (black picture). I've set 'Allow service to interact with desktop' and run that service on current user account. Any ideas what could be wrong? I test it on windows XP, but it is expected to work on Vista and 7 as well. Yes it works as desktop application on all computers, but on some of them (on majority of them) it fails as a service.

• sscanf + c99 not working on some platforms ?

  When I compile a simple Hello World! program that uses the sscanf function on my local Debian lenny x64, it works. But when I upload the same program to the server running CentOS x86, it will not work. If I do not use sscanf, then the program works on both computers. gcc -std=c99 -O2 -pipe -m32 If I compile it with sscanf but without -std=c99, then it works on both computers. gcc -O2 -pipe -m32 What is the problem with sscanf and c99 on CentOS x86 ? I thought that compiling with the -m32 flag would work on all Linuxes ? (I have limited access to the CentOS server, so I do not have access to error messages.)

  I have 2 computers. Both with w7 as os. I have installed wampserver on one of them. I have mysql database on wampserver. Then I have made a vb.net program to connect to mysql database. I have put the program on both computers. What I want to do is for those two programs to see the same database that is on one computer. For them to be able to add, delete, update that 1 database. How do I do that? How do I network the mysql database? Do I also have to install wampserver on the other computer? What do I do? Please enlighten me.

  Hello, I want to develop a POS application in .NET (C#) that would be used to rent items. I have a good idea of what will be done and the famous question that I have is about the DBMS that I should use. I would like to use MySQL database. The question is: If some places use only one computer (no network, no internet connection), can I use a MySQL database in local? Do I need to install MySQL server on all thoses computers to be able to use such a database? I know SQLite but I'm not sure if the limitations can cause problems in the future... I also looked at SQLServer Express versions. (I must consider that other point of sales are using multiple computers and more transactions so there I can't put sqlexpress or sqlite) So can anybody suggest me what I should do in that situation? • Is there a reason why a submit button would fail in ie6 using jquery?

  I have a form being submit to a servlet, there is a jQuery Datepicker on the page. On some computers using ie6, for some reason the page is crashing on submit. I am getting a 404 error, but only sometimes. I have no idea why this would occur. My theory is that somehow it's bypassing the servlet, or its not loading jquery properly, or... I am at a loss. What are some reasons why this could occur on some computers? The exact version of ie6 is 6.0.2900.2180, on windows XP SP2. How can I test with this specific version?

• Specifying path in a preference file in Unison

  I am using Unison to sync a folder on my local computer with one on a server. I am using a unison preference file for this. If I specify the path of the local folder using Method 1 (see below) things work well. But Method 2 does not work. I would like to use something like Method 2 because I want to use the same preference file (synced using Dropbox) on two different computers. But the usernames are different on these two computers and I cannot change the usernames. Any ideas how this can be achieved? Thank you. • sync framework server to server synchronization

  I have kind of a such scenario: Here i need to synchronize local server database with main DB server(example: computers in office are connected to office server and they use it like a local server, so that no sync is required.BUT computers in other office work with their local server too and we need synchronization between the offices though the main DB server.). As i see i cant use SQLCompact here. Is there a provider to do the server-to-server synchronization right from the client? If no can someone provide a sample of solution of how to manage such situation?

  Just curious about a particular scenario of NAT. Let's suppose we have 4 computers sharing a global IP address under the NAT. I understand that the NAT box keeps an internal record to know which computer to forward requests to. But let's say on computer #2 I'm trying to download a file. And let's say on computer #1, #3, and #4, I'm just browsing the web normally. When the browser initiates a TCP connection to get that file, how does it know which computer to give it to? I mean like, each of the four computers is using port 80 to browse the web right? How does the NAT's record distinguish which "port 80" belongs to which computer?

It's almost in the realm of "hollywood special effects" -- like fire/smoke/fire, but I don't want natural phenomenon; I want user interfaces. Concrete question: where can I learn about creating flashy, cool looking (though not necessairly useful) user interfaces? [Perferably in OpenGL]

  I have a need to code from two computers during the week. What is the best way to sync the two computers (mac)? I've started using source control, like SVN. It works pretty good, except sometimes I check in code that I want to sync but they don't compile and it interferes with other people on the team working on the same project. I don't want to use branch. It wouldn't make sense to branch every night when I head home from office.

• Generation of .tlb Files in Windows 7 Pro 32-bit

  I have a C++ DLL that imports a .tlb file generated in a C# project. The C++ DLL is a wrapper DLL containing functions that call the corresponding C# functions. When I call the C++ functions on the computer that I built the projects, all works well. But when I copy the DLL's and generated tlb's to another computer with the same exact version of Windows and installed programs andI call the C++ functions, it breaks with a COM error. However, after recompiling the projects on the new computer, everything works again. I already checked the "Work on All Computers" for both projects but this keeps happening. What else do I need to do for the DLL's to work on all computers?

• How to set a filter for an estimated maximum price

  I cannot figure out how to set an estimated maximum price for a collection of records. What I want to avoid is to simply use SQL MAX, because maybe there are records with exorbitant prices. For example, in the "computers-hardware" category of OLX (http://www.olx.com/computers-hardware-cat-240) the filter for maximum price is estimately set to $1400, but sorting by price, the first items are above $10000 Maybe they calculated the average and then estimated some maximum price... what do you think? And what about the stepping? How would you calculate it?

  I have few computers connected to the network and I want to create batch files to automatize the process of working with them. I have already created one used to shutdown computers at once. It is very simple I ll just post it for the sake of argument. @echo off shutdown -s -m \\Slave1-PC shutdown -s -m \\Slave2-PC shutdown -s -m \\Slave3-PC Now I want to execute programs on these machines. So lets say there is "example.exe" file located "\Slave1-PC\d\example.exe" using call \\Slave1-PC\\d\\example.exe runs it on my computer through network and i didn't come up with anything else.   In 6 months I will be a graduate and pursuing a masters in computers for the next 2 years in India. My options after that are to either do a post graduation (again) from a reputed college abroad, or to take up a job. Recently I came to know about about global certification programs like ccna, ccnp, ccie, oca, ocp, j2se, mcse, mcp etc. If I do these certifications, will it help me get a better job, or get into a top college ? How much does it matter? Considering that I like most areas of computers, which certifications are most beneficial? (I even had a crazy idea to do them all in 2.5 years left. Or should I try and master a few instead). Please advise.

Ad random computers are added and removed. Is there any open source project or algorithm that could help us visualising this in VB.net? Or would you suggest us to switch to java.   I'm trying to link 10 computers together, the program i would like to write would have one 'control' computer. From what I've looked up this computer would take all the packets sent over the network and do a echo with them... right? The other computers would need to be able to send information (then echoed to the others) to the 'control' ... is there a easy! or simple way to do this? From what I've seen i want a non-blocking socket? I have looked into sockets and such but for an armature programmer like me, this seems like a daunting task :) I'm kind-of looking for an easy class implication that has a send() and an event driven recv(). I'm not going to be sending that much information over the network.

  Im new to python, but I was thinking about making a program with python to give to my friends. They don't know much about computers so if I asked them to install python by them selves they couldn't do it, but what if I could make an installer that downloads some version of python that only has what is needed for my file to run and make an exe file that would run the .py file in its own python interpreter . I also did a Google search and saw the freezing applications I could use to make the code into exe files to distribute (cx_freeze I use python 3.2), but not all of my friends have Windows computers and I rather Have my program so in each new version it auto updates by making a patch to .py file and not completely re-installing it .
