  • Create a dynamic project template in VS 2010?

    This might sound a bit of an odd question but I know what I want to achieve, just don't know if it's possible. Firstly, I'd like to be able to create a visual studio project that the 2 developers that work with me can use as a basis for all new websites. I want to drop all the common files that we use in there, like jQuery, CMS files etc. so that every time they start a new project they don't have to worry about all of that stuff. I guess to do this I just set up a project and "File Export Template" ? Now, here's the tricky bit... When you open up one of the default templates in VS it asks you a few questions, such as if you want to use a master page or if you want to use code behind etc. What I would like to do is set up something similar so that when you use the project template it asks you what version of jQuery you want to use so that it can import the right file, or for example it might ask you if you want to include certain user controls that the CMS contains. If you tick the box then the folder with the necessary user controls would be put in your new project for you. I know MS can do this but can a user like me include functionality like that in my own project template? Hope that makes sense.

  • VS2010: "Select Resource" dialog & resx location

    Got two issues with the VS2010 / VS2008 select resource dialog - the one that appears when you want to add an image to a button in a WinForms app for example. Give me my files back! It only seems to see the default project resources file (Properties\Resources.resx), and resx files in project root (say MyProject\famfamfam.resx). We have quite a few icons all over the app, and because some of them come from different icon sets (like famfamfam), and some are related to this project only we'd like to keep them separate. For that same reason (keeping solution neat & tidy) we want to store these extra resource files in the Resources folder (eg. Resources\famfamfam.resx). However, we'd also like to keep using the Select Resource dialog :-) Because it does not see the 'extra' resource files, we're having to select a 'fake' icon now (from the global Resources.resx file) and then manually change that to reference the right icon in .Designer.cs. As you can imagine, this is a pain. Stop modifying my files! Second issue is a bit more annoying. We use the excellent MultiLang add-in for Visual Studio to globalize our app. It stores its translations in MultiLang.resx & MultiLang.XY.resx files in the project root, where XY is a language code, eg. .cs.resx for Czech. These have to be set to No code generation access modifier. What Select Resource seems to be doing is set all .resx files it can find to Internal. Exec summary Is there a way to convince Select Resource dialog to look for extra .resx files anywhere besides the project root? Is there any way to stop it from modifying the access modifier of the resources it does see (other than file a bug with MS)? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  • Removing the XML Formatter from ASP.NET Web API Applications

    ASP.NET Web API's default output format is supposed to be JSON, but when I access my Web APIs using the browser address bar I'm always seeing an XML result instead. When working on AJAX application I like to test many of my AJAX APIs with the browser while working on them. While I can't debug all requests this way, GET requests are easy to test in the browser especially if you have JSON viewing options set up in your various browsers. If I preview a Web API request in most browsers I get an XML response like this: Why is that? Web API checks the HTTP Accept headers of a request to determine what type of output it should return by looking for content typed that it has formatters registered for. This automatic negotiation is one of the great features of Web API because it makes it easy and transparent to request different kinds of output from the server. In the case of browsers it turns out that most send Accept headers that look like this (Chrome in this case): Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Web API inspects the entire list of headers from left to right (plus the quality/priority flag q=) and tries to find a media type that matches its list of supported media types in the list of formatters registered. In this case it matches application/xml to the Xml formatter and so that's what gets returned and displayed. To verify that Web API indeed defaults to JSON output by default you can open the request in Fiddler and pop it into the Request Composer, remove the application/xml header and see that the output returned comes back in JSON instead. An accept header like this: Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,*/*;q=0.9 or leaving the Accept header out altogether should give you a JSON response. Interestingly enough Internet Explorer 9 also displays JSON because it doesn't include an application/xml Accept header: Accept: text/html, application/xhtml+xml, */* which for once actually seems more sensible. Removing the XML Formatter We can't easily change the browser Accept headers (actually you can by delving into the config but it's a bit of a hassle), so can we change the behavior on the server? When working on AJAX applications I tend to not be interested in XML results and I always want to see JSON results at least during development. Web API uses a collection of formatters and you can go through this list and remove the ones you don't want to use - in this case the XmlMediaTypeFormatter. You can also look for the specific formatter (XmlMediatTypeFormatter) by its type name which is simpler, but it's better to search for the supported types as this will work even if there are other custom formatters added. Once removed, now the browser request results in a JSON response: It's a simple solution to a small debugging task that's made my life easier.   • Port numbers in Visual Studio projects and IIS

    I have a few questions about localhost and port numbers as this is an area where I do not have a lot of knowledge, and because I recently had to work with setting up Visual Studio projects and IIS and there are things I'm not clear on. I have the following questions on the things I find confusing. I thought it made more sense to include them all in one question instead of making separate questions. I have noticed a random port number is generated with projects I have worked on in the past, but I recently saw a project where the port number was fixed. What is the purpose of having a fixed/default localhost port number? i.e is it particularly useful on projects that have many programmers working on the project? If a solution contains multiple projects (for example, WCF services, Domain, MVC/Web pages), is it possible to setup a different localhost port for each of them? If so, what is the benefit of this? If a solution contains multiple projects and has different localhost urls/port numbers, must there be a corresponding website (and application pool) for each project in IIS? Or just for the project that contains the actual web pages?

    For Visual Studio 2010 Web based application we have Config Transformation features by which we can maintain multiple configuration files for different environments. But the same feature is not available for App.Config files for Windows Services/WinForms or Console Application. There is a workaround available as suggested on the following link. http://vishaljoshi.blogspot.com/2010/05/applying-xdt-magic-to-appconfig.html However it is not straightforward and requires no of steps. Is there an easier way to achieve the same for App.Config files?

  • Ruby GUI (non-complex layouts)

    I've done quite a bit of research on Ruby GUI design, and it appears to be the one area where Ruby tends to be behind the curve. I've explored the options of MonkeyBars, wxRuby, fxRuby, Shoes, etc. and was just wanted to get some input from the Ruby community. While they're definitely usable, the development on each seems to have fallen off. There is not a great deal of useful documentation or user bases that I could find on any (minus the fxRuby book). I'm just looking to make a simple GUI, so I don't really want to spend hundreds of hours learning the intricacies of the more complex tools or attempt to use something that is no longer even being developed (Shoes is the type of application I'm looking for, but it's extremely buggy and not being actively developed.) Out of all of the options, which would you guys recommend as being the quickest to pick up and that still has some sort of development base? Thanks!

    Question Where can I find a list of changes introduced to Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate RTM that were added since Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate RC? In fact, I'm only interested in changes related to MS Test Manager 2010 and Coded UI Tests. Where I have looked so far I have searched the Internet, looked for a readme.txt in the installation folder, looked into the Visual Studio help (F1) and browsed the "What's new in Visual Studio 2010" section on MSDN. No luck. Found Scott Guthrie's blog post Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 Released, but that's not exactly what I am looking for. It's not a changelog since VS2010RC. I suppose there is no such file because they made too many changes to document and hand out to end users. But if there was, I'd be glad if someone could point me to it. Thanks.

    My goal is to print labels with barcodes and a date stamp from an entry to a zebra TLP 2844 when the user clicks the ok button/hits enter. i found what i think might be the code for this from zebras site and have been integrating it into my program but part of it is depreciated and i cant quite figure out how to update it. below is what i have so far.     G'Day, I am looking to prototype a windows based GUI. Ideally I would like: Be able create new GUI's and change existing ones quickly The resulting "thing" to be self contained Have the ability to include limited data where necessary ie. When showing a grid including the headers and perhaps a few rows of data for the grid. Allow clickable hotspots that either allow a new screen to be shown or perhaps an explanation hint. I have been using Visio 2003 for this kind of thing and then producing a PDF. However it has some disadvantages: Including data for grids is not possible You cannot include hotspots to allow changing of tabs within the workbook. eg Click on a button and it opens a different tab. If possible a free / open source application would be preferable but a low priced commercial application would also be good. All pointers and suggestions greatly appreciated.Rapid

    When creating a new project in netbeans, if i select JAVA Desktop application, it creates some code which I DO NOT RECOGNISE AT ALL as what i had learnt in swing. It imports packages such as : org.jdesktop.application.SingleFrameApplication; also, the declaration for main() looks like this : public static void main(String[] args) { launch(DesktopApplication2.class, args); } This really does not make any sense to my knowledge of JFrame, JPanel etc.. If i try to code a netbeans application from scratch, i can write my own swing app BUT I CANNOT FIND THE GUI EDITOR. How do i bring the GUI editor when creating java application from scratch ? Can anyone explain to me this org.jdesktop.application.SingleFrameApplication and other classes ? Please help. This is really frustrating.

    How can I create automatic GUI using XML file in C#? Should I write a parser for the file and define a sort of "protocol" for the file's structure, and after the parse - create the GUI controls manually (respective to the data in the files)? Or is there a better way? Is there a tool, or a built-in code in the .NET environment which can do that for me automatically? (I am currently working with win forms, but I am willing to consider any other technology - as long as it's supported in MONO, since the code should be portable to Linux as well).

  • GUI Application becomes unresponsive while http request is being done

    I have just made my first proper little desktop GUI application that basically wraps a GUI (php-gtk) interface around a SimpleTest Web Test case to make it act as a remote testing client. Each time the local The Web Test case runs, it sends an HTTP request to another SimpleTest case (that has an XHTML interface) sitting on my server. The application, allows me to run one local test that collates information from multiple remote tests. It just has a 'Start Test' button, 'Stop Test' button and a setting to increase/decrease the number of remote tests conducted in each HTTP Request. Each test-run takes about an hour to complete. The trouble is, most of the time the application is making http requests. Furthermore, whenever an HTTP Request is being made, the application's GUI is unresponsive. I am considering splitting the application into two, where: Test Controller Application - Acts as a settings-writer / report-reader and this writes to settings file and reads a report file. Test Runner Application - Acts as a settings-reader / report-writer and, for each iteration reads the settings file, Runs the test, then write a report. So to tell it to close down - I'd: Press the Stop Button on the 'Test Controller Application', which writes to the settings file, which is read by the 'Test Runner Application' which stops, then writes to the report file to say it stopped the 'Test Controller Application' reads the report and updates the status and so on... However, before I go ahead and split the application in two - I am wondering if there is any other obvious way to deal with, this issue. I suspect it is probably quite common and a well-trodden path. Also is there an easier way to send messages between two applications?

  • Structuring Win32 GUI code

    I wish to improve my code and file structure in larger Win32 projects with plenty of windows and controls. Currently, I tend to have one header and one source file for the entire implementation of a window or dialog. This works fine for small projects, but now it has come to the point where these implementations are starting to reach 1000-2000 lines, which is tedious to browse. I have tried to find good open source examples of structuring Win32 code, but I just get more confused since there are hundreds of files, and within each of these files that seem GUI related, the Win32 GUI code seems so far encapsulated away. And when I finally find a CreateWindowEx statement, the window proc is nowhere to be found. Any advice on how to structure all the code while remaining sane would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! I don't wish to use any libraries or frameworks as I find the Win32 API interesting and valuable for learning. Any insight into how you structure your own GUI code could perhaps serve as inspiration.

  • Converting app to MVC and running it in both console and gui

    I have a simple java gui calculator, with 3 number systems (there are some bugs but that doesn't matter now). Currently all code is in one file. My task is to rewrite it as MVC, and add possibility to run it in either gui or console mode. How should I divide this program to organise it as M-V-C ? Is it written properly enough to add console functionality to it? (guess I'll have to change all methods invoking to JLabel Output to something simply storing an output String as a model argument and then having View to get it).   • web.config transforms not being applied on either publish or build installation package

    Today I started playing with the web.config transforms in VS 2010. To begin with, I attempted the same hello world example that features in a lot of the blog posts on this topic - updating a connection string. I created the minimal example shown below (and similar to the one found in this blog). The problem is that whenever I do a right-click - "Publish", or a right-click - "Build Deployment Package" on the .csproj file, I'm not getting the correct output. Rather than a transformed web.config, I'm getting no web.config, and instead the two transform files are included. What am I doing wrong? Any help gratefully received!     I want to create a GUI driven application for a micro-controller (Atmel XMEGA) that is connected to a 128x64 dots graphics LCD (EA DOGL128-6) and 4 buttons for navigation. Controlling the display itself (e.g. drawing pixels and characters) is no problem but in order to prevent me from reinventing the wheel I was googling for a GUI-Library/-Toolkit that is written in c, includes its source code, will run on a 32 MHz 8-bit micro-controller and provides at least the following controls: panel (to group elements) menu (scrollable) icon label button line-graph (optional) But I didn't find any thing useful. Does anyone know (or better uses) such a library(preferably for free)?

  • Swing: what to do when a GUI update takes too long and freezes other GUI elements?

    Hello, everyone! I know that GUI code in Java Swing must be put inside SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait or SwingUtilities.invokeLater. This way threading works fine. Sadly, in my situation, the GUI update it that thing which takes much longer than background thread(s). More specific: I update a JTree with about just 400 entries, nesting depth is maximum 4, so should be nothing scary, right? But it takes sometimes one second! I need to ensure that the user is able to type in a JTextPane without delays. Well, guess what, the slow JTree updates do cause delays for JTextPane during input. It refreshes only as soon as the tree gets updated. I am using Netbeans and know empirically that a Java app can update lots of information without freezing the rest of the UI. How can it be done? NOTE 1: All those DefaultMutableTreeNodes are prepared outside the invokeAndWait. NOTE 2: When I replace invokeAndWait with invokeLater the tree doesn't get updated.

  • Python - which multi platform GUI framework to use?

    Hi, I've written a Python GUI application and made it run on Linux, Windows and Mac. The framework I'm using is PyGtk. The final result is not really good: the application looks horrible on Mac, and it is not really 'native' neither on Windows. Furthermore on Mac the windows' behavior is sometimes wrong, with modal dialogs appearing below the main windows. I've explored other frameworks and I've found that a porting may be really hard: PyQt it is huge, difficult to install and to distribute under Mac; PyGui is poor: I need tables and tree views at least; wxPython state explicitly that you have to use a custom python build for Mac Tkinter: didn't check it, only have the impression that it is obsolete I know this question may appear similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/394039/which-python-gui-framework but in that thread the portability issue is not really taken in account. Windows and Mac are a must, since most of my user have that systems. Can you also suggest some books?

    I'm working on a project started in VB9 (VS 2008) and now I've migrated to VS2010 (VB10) but on the production server the IDE is still VS 2008. On my developement enviroment the code compiles fine, but sometimes, - let's say - I forget an _ at the end of the line which causes the VB9 compiler to throw an error. So the question is, how could I build a project with the VS 2010 IDE but VB9 compiler? Or to force the VB10 compiler into VB9 mode?
