• Optimal file system type and mount options for an rsnapshot dedicated drive

  We have an external USB 2 drive that we are using as a backup drive for our configuration. We use rsnapshot for the backups. Is there a way to optimize this since it's solely used for rsnapshot? Of course, reasoning would be greatly appreciated.

• Apache2: 400 Bad Reqeust with Rewrite Rules, nothing in error log?

My code in the lobster project is PHP with the CodeIgniter framework. Trying to load http://lobster.dev:81/ gives me: 400 Bad Request Normally, I'd go check my logs to see what caused it, yet my logs are empty! I looked in both /private/var/log/apache2/error_log and /private/var/log/apache2/lobster_error, and neither records ANY message relating to the 400. I have LogLevel set to debug in /private/etc/apache2/http.conf. Removing the rewrite rules gets rid of the error, but these same rules work on my MAMP host. I've double-checked and rewrite_module is loaded in my default Apache installation. My http.conf can be found here: https://gist.github.com/1057091 What gives? Let me know if you need any additional info. NOTE: I do NOT want to add the rewrite rules to .htaccess in the project directory (it's checked into a git repo and I don't want to touch it).

• Advanced Linux file permission question (ownership change during write operation)

  By default the umask is 0022: usera@cmp$ touch somefile; ls -l total 0 -rw-r--r-- 1 usera usera 0 2009-09-22 22:30 somefile The directory /home/shared/ is meant for shared files and should be owned by root and the shared group. Files created here by usern (any user) are automatically owned by the shared group. There is a cron-job taking care of changing owning user and owning group (of any moved files) once per day: usera@cmp$ cat /etc/cron.daily/sharedscript #!/bin/bash chown -R root:shared /home/shared/ chmod -R 770 /home/shared/ I was writing a really large file to the shared directory. It had me (usera) as owning user and the shared group as group owner. During the write operation the cron job was run, and I still had no problem completing the write process. You see. I thought this would happen: I am writing the file. The file permissions and ownership data for the file looks like this: -rw-r--r-- usera shared The cron job kicks in! The chown line is processed and now the file is owned by the root user and the shared group. As the owning group only has read access to the file I get a file write error! Boom! End of story. Why did the operation succeed? A link to some kind of reference documentation to back up the reason would be very welcome (as I could use it to study more details).

• USB External HDD NOT spinning down on Windows Vista / Windows 7

  I have 3 external 2.5" USB HDDs - all from different manufacturers and with different capacities. I also have access to multiple Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows XP computers. My problem is that with the Windows Vista and Windows 7 computers, the external USB drives DO NOT spin down when I do "Safely remove hardware". Windows will tell me that I can safely remove the device, but I can see (and feel the rotations of the disk when I touch the casing) that the disks are still spinning and NEVER spin down. They also never go into their suspended state (which is generally signaled with a slow flashing of the activity LED). However, with Windows XP, when I do "Safely remove hardware", I can see that the drives do indeed spin down without any issues and go into their respective suspended states. I notice that this behaviour is consistent across all my 3 drives and on different hardware. Has anybody else noticed the same issues? Is there any way we can have the same behaviour as Windows XP on Windows Vista and 7, because I feel on the long run, disconnecting the drives while they are still spinning will have a negative effect on their life span. • Immediately tell which output was sent to stderr

  When automating a task, it is sensible to test it first manually. It would be helpful, though, if any data going to stderr was immediately recognizeable as such, and distinguishable from the data going to stdout, and to have all the output together so it is obvious what the sequence of events is. One last touch that would be nice is if, at program exit, it printed its return code. All of these things would aid in automating. Yes, I can echo the return code when a program finishes, and yes, I can redirect stdout and stderr; what I'd really like it some shell, script, or easy-to-use redirector that shows stdout in black, shows stderr interleaved with it in red, and prints the exit code at the end. Is there such a beast? [If it matters, I'm using Bash 3.2 on Mac OS X]. Update: Sorry it has been months since I've looked at this. I've come up with a simple test script: #!/usr/bin/env python import sys print "this is stdout" print >> sys.stderr, "this is stderr" print "this is stdout again" In my testing (and probably due to the way things are buffered), rse and hilite display everything from stdout and then everything from stderr. The fifo method gets the order right but appears to colourize everything following the stderr line. ind complained about my stdin and stderr lines, and then put the output from stderr last. Most of these solutions are workable, as it is not atypical for only the last output to go to stderr, but still, it'd be nice to have something that worked slightly better.

  I have recently swapped from CENTOS 5 to FEDORA 17. Previously I have created my own init.d scripts successfully (albeit not for qpidd) however, in FEDORA I cannot get it to work. • Virtual Wifi Issue Windows 7

  Lately I've been trying to use my laptop as a wireless router in my room. I have it connected to my school's network through ethernet, and I want to set up wireless so that I can use Wifi on my Android phone and iPod Touch. In the past, I used Connectify, but I started having an issue where my phone would find the network, connect, attempt to get the IP, and then suddenly the network would disappear. Then it'd pop up again, and the same process would happen over and over. I decided that I'd totally uninstall Connectify, but after that, neither Virtual Router Manager nor the command prompt could create a viable network either. My phone and even my iPod now encounter the same problem. Neither can successfully connect. So evidently there is something wrong with the laptop's virtual wifi feature, and I have no idea what that could be. I've tried enabling certain services that virtual wifi supposedly relies on, but some of them don't start, namely Remote Access Connection Manager. But I also have read that these enable on their own and that if they are normally not enabled it's fine. Furthermore, I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for my wireless card. Any ideas as to why my virtual wifi won't function? Anything? I really would love to get this working...

• PC powers off at random times

  Short Version After experiencing some problems with Mobo batteries my PC started to power off at random times, the power off is instant and sudden and does not restart afterwards, need help figuring out the cause. Facts: Powers off when PC is playing games Powers off when PC is idle Powers off when PC is in safe mode Powers off when PC is in BIOS Powers off when PC is booted through a Windows installation USB Replaced the motherboard battery several times Replaced the 650W PSU with a 750W PSU Replaced the RAM Swapped the RAM between slots Re-applied thermal paste to the CPU Checked if the motherboard touches the case Nothing is overclocked PC Specs PC specs: OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 RAM: klingston 1333MHz 4GB stick CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 Mobo: Gigabyte 88GMA-UD2H rev 2.2 Motherboard battery: CR2032 3v HDD: 500GB Seagate ST3500418AS ATA Device Graphics: ATI/AMD Radeon HD 6870 Very Long version Around 10 months ago I built a brand new gaming PC. Around 6 months ago it's time setting in windows started resetting to the year 2010. I swapped the Motherboard battery for a new one of the exact same size and shape and voltage, and the problems disappeared...for around 2 weeks. Then the same problem happened again, time gets reset, I swapped the battery again, and the problem was gone for good and everything was great for about 3 months.. then another problem started happening, the PC started to power off suddenly and without warning at completely random times, sometimes the PC works for and hour, sometimes 5 minutes. So I read on the forums that it might be either the PSU or the motherboard Battery or RAM or HDD or the Graphics card or the CPU or the motherboard or the drivers or a Virus or Grounding issues, or something short circuiting, basically it can be anything... I spent some days researching, and decided to remove the possibility of a virus. I reset the CMOS, cleared all BIOS settings and reinstalled windows 7 after a full format of the HDD, but the random power off kept happening. I then disabled the restart on error option in windows and looked at the event log for error events, but they did not help me figure out the problem. Network list service depends on network location awareness the dependency group failed to start Source Kernel Power Event 41 Task Category 63 Source Disk Event ID 11 Task Category None The driver detected a controller error on device disk I took apart the PC, every little piece, re-applied some expensive thermal paste to the CPU, and double checked that none of the pieces are touching the PC case. The problem was gone, the PC no longer powered off randomly I re-attached the graphics card and all was good for 4 months... then the power off problem appeared again, but was happening at high intervals, the PC would shutdown once in 2 days on average, at random points in time, sometimes when it's idle all day long, sometimes when it's running CRYSIS 2. I checked the CPU temperature, because I know that AMD CPU's have a built in protection mechanism that switches off the PC if the CPU gets too hot, and the Temp was 50C system temp, and 45C CPU after running the PC all day long (I did not do tests to see if there are any temperature spikes, don't know how to do them) Originally the PSU that powered the PC was 650Watts and had one 4 pin cable to power the CPU, I replaced it with a new 750Watts PSU which has two 4 pin cables for the CPU, but the problem remained. I removed the graphics card and let the motherboard use the built in one, but the PC kept suddenly powering off at random times. I took apart the PC completely again, and re-applied thermal paste to the CPU, added lots of insulation, and checked for any type of short-circuit possibility again and again, but the problem remained. The problem was like that for some months. I replaced the Battery a couple of times over the time, changed lots of options in windows, and tried everything I could, but it kept powering off, so I stopped using the PC as much as I used to, just living with the random power offs from time to time, until a couple of days ago, when the power off happens almost immediately after powering on the PC. I replaced the RAM with a brand new one, but that did not help. Took apart the PC again, checked for anything anywhere that might cause it, found some small scratches on the very edge of the motherboard to the left of the PCI express x16 slot. This might cause the problem, I thought, but the scratch looks very superficial, not deep at all, and if the scratch did harm the motherboard, wouldn't it cause it to not start at all? And why did it start to power off a while ago, and then suddenly stop powering off? The scratches could not have vanished??? did chkdsk \d but it powered off when it was at 75% I removed the hard disks, the graphics card, while I fiddled with the BIOS settings, and suddenly the PC shut down while I was looking at the BIOS version. This makes me realize, it is not caused by: HDD, Windows, Drivers or the Graphics card I cleared the CMOS again, updated the BIOS from F5 to F6f beta, but that did not help, it might even seem that the PC powers off even sooner. The shutdown even happened to me while I booted through a windows 7 installation USB and was in the repair console. I removed one of the cables powering the CPU, now only one 4pin cable powers it, and it worked for 30mins after doing that, which makes me think that it's the CPU overheating, and because it gets less power, it overheats slower? The things that I am still considering: CPU overheating (does not seem to overheat, maybe false readings?) Motherboard short circuiting (faulty motherboard?) I desperately need some advice in what is faulty, is it a faulty Motherboard or an overheating CPU? or maybe something else? I have been breaking my head over this problem over a span of 6 months. I'm not sure if this is a good place to ask this question, if it is not, then tell me where I can get some experienced help. Does it take a second and then restarts? Do you see (BSOD) or hear (PSU, short circuit) any suspicious when it happens? Immediate power off, all the fans stop instantly, all the light turn off instantly, no sound or anything, and it remains off until I turn it back on. Thanks for the feedback, faulty motherboard is what I fear. Q. Try stress-testing the system with Prime95 and see if errors or shutdowns occur when the CPU is under full load. – speakr A. Prime95 heat stress test peaked CPU heat at 60C after 5mins, it powered off after 30mins of testing in the middle of the test with no errors, Prime95 Heat test or the stress-testing with low RAM usage (small or in-place FFTs) do not report errors while testing for 10-60 mins. The power off does not seem like it is affected by Prime95 at all Makes me wonder if it's a CPU or Motherboard issue at all. Q. I had similar random/intermittent problems with my old board. It gave one of a few different symptoms: keyboard and/or mouse would die and/or the RAM wouldn't work and/or it would shut down. It was in bad shape. One problems was that my old PSU had literally burned the connector on it (browned around the pins), another was that a broken lead inside the layers of the PCB would work sometimes if it happened to be hot or if I bent the board—by jamming a hunk of wood behind it. I managed to keep the board alive for several years, but eventually nothing I did would make it work correctly anymore. – Synetech A. I will try that as the last resort, ok? ;) Q. Have you tried a different power cord, surge protector, outlet (on a different circuit). It's worth a shot just to ensure it's not subpar wiring or a week circuit (dips in power may cause shutdown if the PSU can't pull enough juice from the wall). – Kyle A. yes, I attached the PC to an entirely different outlet on a different circuit and the problem persists. After connecting it to a different outlet after starting the PC it gave me 3 long beeps and 1 short one, then the PC immediately proceeded to boot up normally. Q. Re-check your mainboard manual and all PSU connections to your mainboard to be sure that nothing is missing (e.g. 12V ATX 4-pin/6-pin connector). If you can provoke shutdowns with Prime95, then consider buying new hardware -- a stable system should run Prime95 for 24h without any errors. Prime95 mentions errors in the log when they occur and gives a summary after the stress test was stopped manually (e.g. "0 errors, 0 warnings", if all is fine) – speakr A. Re-checked, there are no more PSU connectors that I can physically connect, except the one ATX 4-pin (there are 2 that power the CPU) that I disconnected on purpose, I have reconnected it but the problem persists. Q. With one PC I had a short curcuit. The power button on the front plate had its cables soldered, but not isolated, and the contacts were very close to the metal case. A heavier touch was enough to cause a shutdown. The PC's vibration could be enough – ott-- A. yes, it seems to switch off with even the lightest touch, I switched on the PC, then pulled out the front panel power cable that connects to the motherboard so the power button does not work anymore, after 5 mins of working like that, with the power button completely disconnected, just sitting idle, the PC powered off again, I don't think it's the power button. Q. I wonder if you dare to operate components without the case, that is remove motherboard, power, disk ( just put the motherboard on a wooden desk). Don't bend the adapters when running like that. – ott-- A. yes, I do dare to do that, but only tomorrow, too tired/late right now.

• How do I make rsync also check ctime?

  rsync detects files modification by comparing size and mtime. However, if for any reason, the mtime is unchanged, rsync won't detect the change, although it's possible to spot it by looking at the ctime. Of course, I can tell rsync do compare the whole files' contents, but that's very very expensive. Is there a way to make rsync smarter, for example by checking mtime+size are the same AND that ctime isn't newer than mtime (on both source and destination) ? Or should I open a feature request ? • Debootstrap Ubuntu over NFS leads to mknod I/O error

  Hi everyone, I'm trying to prepare an Ubuntu environment for a diskless machine that will PXE boot and mount an NFS share as it's root. I've currently got another Ubuntu machine mounting the NFS share and I'm trying to debootstrap into it, but it has trouble creating devices over NFS: root@kimiko:~# mount | grep Seiuchi 192.168.0.203:/mnt/user/Seiuchi on /mnt type nfs (rw,addr=192.168.0.203) root@kimiko:~# debootstrap --arch i386 maverick /mnt http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ mknod: `/mnt/test-dev-null': Input/output error E: Cannot install into target '/mnt' mounted with noexec or nodev My NFS rule on the unRAID server is 192.168.0.201/32(rw,no_root_squash,sync). I don't have the noexec or nodev options set. I've not got much experience with NFS, so I'm probably missing something basic in the way I'm sharing this, but my attempts at Googling for an answer isn't really turning anything useful up. Does anyone have suggestions on what I might have missed or maybe relevant docs? • Triple-monitor set-up (2 unique, 1 cloned): Can a VGA splitter be used on one output of a dual-head

  Background: I'm currently researching hardware components for some kind of information terminal we're building. This application of ours makes use of three output screens: (1) A touch screen where all user input is made; (2) A regular LCD monitor where the requested information is being displayed; and (3) A projector which displays exactly the same signal as screen (2) does. (All screens will run at the same resolution of 1024x768 btw.) Now I figured that using a dual-head video card would be sufficient, let's say a Matrox P690 low-profile PCI card. This would involve having a Y cable connected to the graphics card itself, then two DVI-to-VGA adapters at each end of the Y cable, and then having a VGA splitter on one of the VGA outputs. The following shows the setup in question: 0--1---------2-> VGA (DSUB-15) \ \ ----2-3---------> VGA (DSUB-15) \ \ -----------------> VGA (DSUB-15) 0: graphics card (LFH60 jack) 1: LFH60 to DVI-I dual monitor Y cable 2: DVI-to-VGA adapters 3: VGA splitter cable Question(s): Will this work? I'm particularly concerned about the following points: Can a low-profile PCI video card output a signal which is strong enough for three monitors (even if it's a dual-head card)? Does the combination of so many adapters and splitter cables work? (The LFH-to-DVI cable comes with the video card) Will the VGA splitter cable degrade the signal on the output screen & projector significantly? (If so, would a USB-powered splitter cable remedy this problem?) I can't possibly expect anyone to answer all those questions, but any input is appreciated.

• Specify default group and permissions for new files in a certain directory

  I have a certain directory in which there is a project shared by multiple users. These users use SSH to gain access to this directory and modify/create files. This project should only be writeable to a certain group of users: lets call it "mygroup". During an SSH session, all files/directories created by the current user should by default be owned by group "mygroup" and have group-writeable permissions. I can solve the permissions problem with umask: $ cd project $ umask 002 $ touch test.txt File "test.txt" is now group-writeable, but still belongs to my default group ("mislav", same as my username) and not to "mygroup". I can chgrp recursively to set the desired group, but I wanted to know is there a way to set some group implicitly like umask changes default permissions during a session. This specific directory is a shared git repo with a working copy and I want git checkout and git reset operations to set the correct mask and group for new files created in the working copy. The OS is Ubuntu Linux. Update: a colleague suggests I should look into getfacl/setfacl of POSIX ACL but the solution below combined with umask 002 in the current session is good enough for me and is much more simple.

• Vista laptop 1 connects to network but Vista laptop 2 doesn't

  (Sorry if this is a dulipcate. I did a hunt but couldn't find matching question) We recently got a new router for our network (thomson TG585v8). It was already pre-configured by the ISP and was easy to setup. Both Vista laptops in this home network connected without trouble as well a iPod touch, all via wifi. In the last two days one of the laptops has been unable to connect cleanly to the network (connects as unidentified network). The other laptop, and iPod have not had any issues. I can't think of anything that has changed to make this happen now. I have rebooted the laptop and the router. I have updated the laptop wireless driver I have checked the laptop is set to automatically get IP I have logged into the router which correctly identifies all three wireless devices. The problem laptop connects via LAN without issue. Some things that may or may not matter: The problem laptop also sometimes uses a 3G dongle Both laptops use Windows Live Mesh to sync folders Laptop is usually set to go to sleep NB: it seems this is an intermittent issue, after an hour (since i noticed it) it seems to have fixed itself. Would love ideas though to solve this problem for good.

• MAMP Pro .xip.io, fixing urls with htaccess

  I've got all my websites set up with MAMP Pro. For instance, I got it set up, so when I go to example.com, the browser displays the website that's set up on my iMac. Now, I wanna get MAMP Pro to work so I can view my website on my other computers/devices (which are all hooked up on the same network.) So far all I had to do is check the checkbox "via Xip.io (LAN only)", and now I can view my website on my other computers/devices within my LAN by simply going to example.com.10.0.1.13.xip.io. Problem is, whenever I'm on this other computer/device, when I click on the links, I get 404 error. ie. whenever I go to example.com/news, I get the 404. But when I go to example.com.10.0.1.13.xip.io/news, THEN I get the right page. So in order to solve my problem I need to rewrite the urls. So whenever someone clicks on a link ie. goes straight to example.com/news, he'll go to example.com.10.0.1.13.xip.io/news. I don't want to change all the links in my MySQL file, but I believe I can do it simply with the htaccess file. • Why do messenger keeps coming up when I adjust screen brightness?

  My Dell Studio XPS 13 has a brightness up & down buttons (Fn + up arrow / down arrow), as do most laptops have. It's running Windows 7 64bit and I've installed Windows Live Messenger (build 14 and something) on it. When I hit Fn + down arrow, to reduce screen brightness, the Messenger window pops up. That's true whether it has been running in background (system tray / minimized) before or not. Note, to make messenger hide itself to the system tray, I've set it to Vista Compatibility mode. I don't think that has anything to do with it though, since if I shut compatibility mode off, the problem persists. There's a thread on the matter here, but with no solution. Thanks, Asaf SOLUTION: Stop Intellitype when using internal keyboard. See detailed howto here. EDIT: Some new findings on the matter - If I exit messenger entirely and restart (or simply stop) the service "Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant" the problem is solved until I run messenger again. It persists even after entirely closing messenger, until I restart the said service. EDIT2: The above service "Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant" actual name is wlidsvc. There's no shortcut defined for messenger, nor is there any other hot key in its preferences. EDIT3: I'm not sure if it's relates, but some of the Fn keys are not working - Fn + F1 doesn't put the machine to sleep, Fn + F3 doesn't show battery status. EDIT4: Problem probably relates to conflict with IntelliType Pro. See my answer below. Said conflict also causes Undo command when disabling Wireless (Wireless touch button), and other side effects for various keys.

• Why should main() be short?

  I've been programming for over 9 years, and according to the advice of my first programming teacher, I always keep my main() function extremely short. At first I had no idea why. I just obeyed without understanding, much to the delight of my professors. After gaining experience, I realized that if I designed my code correctly, having a short main() function just sortof happened. Writing modularized code and following the single responsibility principle allowed my code to be designed in "bunches", and main() served as nothing more than a catalyst to get the program running. It seems as though Python did the "Intro to Programming 101" trick and just moved all of main()'s code to a different function called it something very similar to "main". Here's my question: Is this code terribly written, or are there other reasons to have a short main function? As it stands right now, I see absolutely no difference between doing this and just moving the code in Py_Main() back into main(). Am I wrong in thinking this?

  I am trying to get a macports-installed MySQL to use a data directory stored inside my FileVault-protected home dir. I used sudo cp -a /opt/local/var/db/mysql5 ~/db/ (the -a to ensure file permissions remain intact) and then replaced the original mysql5 directory with a soft link: sudo ln -s ~/db/mysql5 /opt/local/var/db/mysql5 However, when I now try to start MySQL it fails. • OC'ing a Sapphire 7950, problems with memory clock

  I bought a new rig with sapphire radeon 7950 flex w/ boost. Good scores initially in 3dmark 11, around 7300 stock. Problem is, as soon as i start overclocking, issues arise. the core clock is at 860, but rises to 925 with boost applied in pressured situations. So all the OC tools are showing 925 as base clock for some reason. Ocing the core clock has been no problem though, got up to 1200 pretty stable, but only an incremental increase in 3dmark 11, to 7600 from 7300, which is worrying. The real trouble starts when i start touching the memory clock. As soon as i touch it even by 1 point up to 1251mhz, the performance goes way down. suddenly i score under 5000 graphics in 3dmark11, no matter if its 1251hz or 1500hz. Ive tried adjusting every other parameter, different tools (sapphiretrixx, catalyst, afterburner) all still the same. Tried upping the power, still same. Where is the issue here?

• MD RAID 1 with external bitmap doesn't fully resync

  I have an interesting configuration: dual boot system with a RAID 1 that needs to be visible in both Windows and Linux. The Windows install is Win 7 Enterprise, and the Linux install is Kubuntu 10.04. To get the RAID to work, I set it up using Windows's "Dynamic Disks" RAID 1, and brought it up in Linux using MD with no persistent superblock, and a write-intent bitmap on another partition. (Without this bitmap, MD had no way of knowing that the array was in sync, and would do a complete resync every time the array started.) The array is assembled like so: mdadm --build /dev/md1 -l 1 -n 2 -b /var/local/md1.bitmap /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 I expected that the first time I ran this command, it would resync the array, write out a bitmap with no dirty chunks, and all would be good. This wasn't the case: after completing the resync, the bitmap was mostly clean, but about 5% dirty blocks remained, as revealed by mdadm -X /var/local/md1.bitmap I didn't mount the filesystem on /dev/md1 or touch it in any other way. I then found that stopping and restarting the array: mdadm --stop /dev/md1 mdadm --build /dev/md1 -l 1 -n 2 -b /var/local/md1.bitmap /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 did indeed read in the bitmap, with an ensuing resync that went quickly because most of the blocks were marked clean. The confusing part is that this resync further reduced the number of dirty blocks, but still did not remove all of them. By repeatedly stopping and restarting I could slowly bring the dirty block count down to around 0.6%, where it seemed to level out. Any ideas what could be causing this? It smells to me of a race condition somewhere that leads to blocks either being skipped over during synchronization or not properly cleared from the bitmap, but I really have no evidence to prove this. It doesn't look like hardware issues since both drives are new and have zero read errors and reallocated sectors reported by smartctl -a.

• NFS Datastore Appears Empty!

  Hi guys, I've got an NFS server problem. The datastore connected and seems to be a valid datastore in both the vSphere client and under /vmfs/volumes. The issue is that it appears to be empty! I can create files (eg: touch /vmfs/volumes/nfs_common/thefile) and it is correctly written to the nfs store. I can verify this by looking on the nfs server itself. But the vmkernel only sees an empty datastore; the file disappears. Another freebsd box can mount the same NFS share and see the files correctly. Some useful data: ESXi 4.0.0 Build 208167 NFS is unfsd running on a Buffalo Linkstation Pro Duo (a bit hacky I know). The share has file system permissions set to 777 at the moment. My /etc/exports is as follows, and as I say it connects fine. /mnt/array1/ESX_Shared 192.168.16.0/255.255.255.0(insecure,rw,sync,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check) The ESXi servers can also successfully mount NFS shares from other NFS servers. • OS X borked; need to backup outside of Time Machine

  Quick Background: iMac G5 (the white one; 4 years old?) Running Leopard 10.5.something. Time Machine started failing on me; and every time I touch the Finder, things beachball like crazy. Booting from install disk then using Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" also fails. I'm left with the conclusion that I have a corrupt file somewhere important, that's (i) keeping TM from working and (ii) messing with basic functionality. I am not (yet) savvy enough in OS X to know what logs to look in, or how to decipher them - but 'corrupt file' seems to be the likely case, based on my readings of apple.com forum threads. So I think I need to backup, outside of Time Machine, then install fresh OS X on a new drive (or maybe SpinRite the current drive?). I'm able to put a (non-Time Machine) external USB drive on, so I dragged all 3 Users' folders to that... am I done backing up? Am I going to have a massive Permissions problem, trying to put things back together after a re-install? Thanks for reading.
