  • DNS Client Event 1012: Error reading local hosts file

    My notebook boots extreme slowly and shows loads of the following error in the event log: Error reading local hosts file Source: DNS Client Events EventID: 1012 The computer is quite new, I kind of just finished installing. So I don't feel like installing everything again (especially since this probably would result in the same problem anyway). Any idea how to resolve this? Thanks, Sam

  • Group Policy error 1006 with and error code 52

    I have a hyper-v cluster operating on win2k8 R2 in a 2003 forest. These servers are at our NOC with a DC that connects to our PDC at HQ via a persistent VPN. The cluster boxes are reporting a error event ID 1006 shown below. The DC is also reporting an error 5805 also shown below. I have found numorus posts regarding 1006 errors, but none for error ID 52's. It's weird, I can ping and I can browse network shares on the DC from each. I thought maybe a DNS or net work issue, but nslook up works too.     On a Cisco device, I know that enabling debugging can incur a performance hit since debugging has such a high priority on the CPU. I know that to log debugging, you have to set logging up to the debugging level (logging buffered 4096 debugging, for example) and also enable debugging on some feature. Does configuring the logging debugging incur the performance hit even if you don't enable debugging on some feature, or would it be safe (assuming you want and can handle all the logging events via syslog) to configure 'logging buffered 4096 debugging' to have maximum logging available if/when someone uses debug?

  • How to find virtualization performance bottlenecks?

    We have recently started moving our C++ build server(s) from real machines into VMs. (MS Hyper-V) We have some performance issues that I've currently no idea how to address. We have: Test-Box - this is a piece of desktop workstation hardware my co-worker used to set up the VM before we moved it to the actual server hardware Srv-Box - this is the server hardware Test-Box-Real - This is Windows running directly on the Test-Box HW Test-Box-VM - This is Windows in a Hyper-V VM on the Test-Box HW Srv-Box-Real- This is Server2008R2 running on the Srv-Box HW. Srv-Box-VM- This is Windows running in a Hyper-V VM on the Srv-Box HW, i.e. on Srv-Box-Real. Now, the problem is that we compared Build times between Test-Box-Real and Test-Box-VM and they were basically equal (within about 2%). Then we moved the VM to the Srv-Box machine and what we saw there is that we have a significant performance degradation between Srv-Box-Real and Srv-Box-VM, that is, where we saw no differences on the Test HW we now do see major differences in performance on the actual Server HW. (Builds about ~~ 50% slower inside the VM.) I should add that both the Test-Box and the Srv-Box are only running this one single VM and doing nothing else. I should also note that the "Real" OS is Win2008R2(64bit) and the VM hosted OS is Wind2003R2(32bit). Hardware specs: Srv-Box: Intel XEON E5640 @ 2.67Ghz (This means 8 cores with hyperthreading on the Real system and "only" 4 cores on the VM, since Hyper-V doesn't allow for hyperthreading, but number of cores doesn't seem to explain the problem here.) 16GB RAM (we have 4GB assigned to the VM) Virtual DELL RAID 1 (2x 450GB HUS156045VLS600 Hitachi 15k SAS drives) Test-Box: Intel XEON E31245 @ 3.3GHz 16GB RAM WD VelociRaptor 600GB 10k RPM SATA Note again that I'm only concerned with the differences between Srv-Box-Real and Srv-Box-VM (high) vs. the differences seen btw. Test-Box-Real and Test-Box-VM (low). Why would one machine have parity when comparing VM vs Real performance and the other (server grade HW no less) would have a large disparity? (Both being XEON CPUs ...)

  • Zabbix Proxy not collecting data

    I have a working Zabbix 1.8.2 server collecting data for our office and our colo facility. However the link between the colo and office is flaky. What I'm trying to do is setup a proxy on the colo side to have a 1 hour cache and relay the data to our primary server at the office. Our zabbix server is compiled from source and uses a mysql database I've followed the instructions found in the zabbix documentation to compile the proxy using a sqlite3 database. I add the proxy to zabbix under Administration-DM-Proxies. The zabbix server "sees" the proxy because the "last seen" field is always under 60s. However when I assign a colo host to the proxy I stop receiving data from it. The colo host's zabbix_agentd.log file says this: 29343:20100622:124847 Timeout while answering request 29343:20100622:124847 Getting list of active checks failed. Will retry after 60 seconds The zabbix_proxy.log says this. 2041:20100622:123131.760 Deleted 0 records from history [0.000994 seconds] 2028:20100622:124131.671 Error while receiving answer from server [ZBX_TCP_READ() failed I also am unable to receive any SNMP data which is more important to me than the zabbix agent data. Has anyone had this problem before? Zabbix Server OS: CentOS5.4 Zabbix Server Build: 1.8.2 from source Zabbix Proxy OS: CentOS5.4 Zabbix Proxy Build: 1.8.2 from source P.S. The SQLite database on the zabbix proxy never gets any data written to it, it is identical to when I created it from the blank schema in zabbix-1.8.2/create/schema. (Yes I've checked the permissions)

  • How do I renew an expired Ubuntu OpenLDAP SSL Certificate

    We went through the steps of revoking an SSL Certificate used by our OpenLDAP server and renewing it but we are unable to start slapd. Here are the commands we used: openssl verify hostname_domain_com_cert.pem We got back that the certificate was expired but "OK" We revoked the certificate we'd been using: openssl ca -revoke /etc/ssl/certs/hostname_domain_com_cert.pem Revoking worked fine. We created the new Cert Request by passing it the key file as input: openssl req -new -key hostname_domain_com_key.pem -out newreq.pem We generated a new certificate using the newly created request file "newreq.pem" openssl ca -policy policy_anything -out newcert.pem -infiles newreq.pem We looked at our cn=config.ldif file and found the locations for the key and cert and placed the newly dated certificate in the needed path. Still we are unable to start slapd with: service slapd start We get this message: Starting OpenLDAP: slapd - failed. The operation failed but no output was produced. For hints on what went wrong please refer to the system's logfiles (e.g. /var/log/syslog) or try running the daemon in Debug mode like via "slapd -d 16383" (warning: this will create copious output). Below, you can find the command line options used by this script to run slapd.     I am trying to install Satchmo 0.9 on an Ubuntu 9.10 guest off of the instructions at http://bitbucket.org/chris1610/satchmo/downloads/Satchmo.pdf. I run into difficulties at 2.1.2: pip install -r http://bitbucket.org/chris1610/satchmo/raw/tip/scripts/requirements.txt pip install -e hg+http://bitbucket.org/chris1610/satchmo/@v0.9#egg=satchmo The first command fails because a compile error for how it's trying to build PIL. So I ran an "aptitude install python-imaging", locally copy the first line's requirements.text, and remove the line that's unsuccessfully trying to build PIL. The first line completes without error, as does the second. How can I get a Satchmo installation under Ubuntu, or at least enough of a Satchmo installation that I am able to start with a skeleton of a store and then flesh it out the way I want?     I hope this isn't a stupid question, and if it is, then I want to at least get it over with so I don't feel so dumb in the future. Here we are, loading up a Windows crash dump with Windbg. Here are the first few lines of the debugger output: 0: kd> .dumpdebug ----- 64 bit Kernel Summary Dump Analysis DUMP_HEADER64: MajorVersion 0000000f MinorVersion 00001db1 ... The MinorVersion I mostly understand. It's hexadecimal and it translates to 7601 in decimal. Windows admins would already be able to tell from that that this must be either a Win7 x64 machine or a 2k8 R2 machine with SP1. But isn't 7601 the build number? It's supposed to be Major.Minor.Build/Revision... right? Also I don't understand the MajorVersion. It should be 6. This version of Windows is 6. But isn't 0000000f in hexadecimal 15 in decimal? The full version string of this version of Windows, when you launch the Command Prompt for instance, is 6.1.7601. If 7601 is the MinorVersion, then what is 1 and what is 6? And why does the crash dump say 0F?

  • Recent ImageMagick on CentOS 6.3

    I'm having a terrible time trying to get a recent version of ImageMagick installed on a CentOS 6.3 x86_64 server. First, I downloaded the RPM from the ImageMagick site and tried to install it. That failed due to missing dependencies: error: Failed dependencies: libHalf.so.4()(64bit) is needed by ImageMagick-6.8.0-4.x86_64 libIex.so.4()(64bit) is needed by ImageMagick-6.8.0-4.x86_64 libIlmImf.so.4()(64bit) is needed by ImageMagick-6.8.0-4.x86_64 libImath.so.4()(64bit) is needed by ImageMagick-6.8.0-4.x86_64 libltdl.so.3()(64bit) is needed by ImageMagick-6.8.0-4.x86_64 I have libtool-ltdl installed, but that includes libltdl.so.7, not libltdl.so.4. I have a similar problem with libHalf, libIex, libIlmImf and libImath. Typically, you can install OpenEXR to get those dependencies. Unfortunately, CentOS 6.3 includes OpenEXR 1.6.1, which includes ilmbase-devel 1.0.1. And that release of ilmbase-devel includes newer versions of those dependencies: libHalf.so.6 libIex.so.6 libIlmImf.so.6 libImath.so.6 I next tried following the instructions for installing ImageMagick from source. No luck there either. I get a build error: RPM build errors: File not found by glob: /home/sean/rpmbuild/BUILDROOT/ImageMagick-6.8.0-4.x86_64/usr/lib64/ImageMagick-6.8.0/modules-Q16/coders/djvu.* I even re-ran configure to explicitly exclude djvu and I still get the same error. At this point, I'm pulling my hair out. What's the easiest way to get a relatively recent version of ImageMagick ( 6.7) installed on CentOS 6.3? Does someone offer RPMs with dependencies somewhere?
