• Windows Installer using usb drive for temp purposes

  When installing apps that are built around Windows Installer, it would appear that it often uses my external usb hard disk (when it's connected) as the temp location while it expands and installs the application (creates a folder off the root with a guid name). Is there anyway to change this so it always defaults to a specific drive? This appears to be the case on Windows Vista and 7, not sure about previous releases. EDIT: Current environment variables look like this: TEMP=C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Temp TMP=C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Temp EDIT: I have a funny suspicion that it's using the drive with the largest available free space.

  At last year's UK Umbraco Festival we gave a demo of our alpha version of Allen for Umbraco, at that stage the application only worked on an iPhone and was a very quick prototype to see what people thought.When we returned to our office the next day, we decided if we were going to release Allen for Umbraco into the wild we really should start again from scratch, the main two reasons for this were;First to ensure it was a truly Universal application ( i.e. it can be installed on an iPhone, iPad or iPod ) which looks and behaves differently depending on the device. The second reason was we really wanted the application to be the foundations of more than just image uploading for Umbraco, for this to be the case we ensured the new version was built following proven design patterns and with lots of unit tests so that we can easily extended it.We have lots of plans for future versions of Allen for Umbraco including adding iCloud support to keep all your settings in sync across your multiple Apple devices. We are also working on support for Umbraco 5 which should be release soon.When you download the App and setup your site, make sure you have a look at the Image Resizing settings, by default we have set these to resize your images to 512 pixels wide, however you can choose from a variety of different resizing methods (by Height, Width, Fit within a frame or the full size image).Also, by default when you select a photo you will see that the image is named with it's date and time stamp of when the photograph was taken (or the current date and time if the original date is not stored in your image). If you click on this name you can edit the name of your photo before it is uploaded.Finally, we are really keep to get your feedback, so within the App help section you will find a way to submit Suggestions and if needed, you can send up Support emails from within the App :)We hope you enjoy the first version of Allen for Umbraco and we look forward to bringing you lots of exciting additional functionality in the future!

  In October, I introduced the finalists for the Microsoft Accelerator for Windows Azure, powered by TechStars. Over the past couple of months, these startups have been mentored by business and technology leaders, met with investors, learned from each other, and, most importantly, been building great products. As the first class approaches Demo Day on January 17th, I’m happy to announce that today we are opening applications for the second class of the Microsoft Accelerator for Windows Azure. The second class will begin on April 1,, 2013 and conclude with Demo Day on June 26, 2013. • SSH: Two Factor Authentication

  I currently have a Ubuntu Server 12.04 running OpenSSH along with Samba and a few other services. At the current time I have public key authentication set up, and I'm wondering if it's possible to set up two factor authentication? I've been looking at Google Authenticator which I currently use with my Gmail account. I've found a PAM module that looks like it will be compatible however it seems that you are forced to use a password and the code generated. I'm wondering if there is a way to use the Google Authenticator Application (or something similar) along with my public key to authenticate into my SSH server?

  Given an arbitrary single argument representing a file (or directory, device, etc), how do I get the absolute path of the argument? I've seen many answers to this question involving find/ls/stat/readlink and $PWD, but none that suits my need. It looks like the closest answer is ksh's "whence" command, but I need it to work in sh/bash. Assume a file, foo.txt, is located in my home directory, /Users/matthew/foo.txt. • eBay Leads Mobile Commerce

  For the first time, more smartphones where shipped than PCs. This important milestone helps reinforce that retailers need a strong mobile commerce strategy. IDC reported that for the 4th quarter of 2010, manufacturers shipped 100.9 million devices versus 92.1 million PCs shipped. One early adopter for the retail industry is eBay, the popular online auction and shopping site. In July 2008 they released their first mobile app and have increased investments ever since. In 2002 they bought PayPal for use with its online channel, but its becoming a force in the mobile world as well. In June 2010 they acquired RedLaser, the popular barcode scanning mobile app. Both pieces of technology enhance the mobile experience, and are available to other retailers as well. More recently, in December 2010 they acquired Critical Path Software, the developer of their eBay, StubHub, and Shopping.com mobile applications. Taking their mobile development in-house was a clear signal that mobile commerce is important to their strategy. Pop on over the eBay Inc's mobile commerce stats page to see just how well they are doing. You can use the animated map to see where people are using the app on any given day, and you can compare sales of the different categories. eBay's hottest category is Cars & Trucks, garnering 16.5% of the total $2B (yes, billion) in mobile sales in 2010. To understand why that category is so large, let's look at the top 10 most expensive cars sold on eBay mobile in 2010: $240,001 Mercedes-Benz: SLR McLaren $209,888 Lamborghini: Gallardo $208,500 Ferrari: 430 $199,900 Lamborghini: Gallardo $189,000 Lamborghini: Murcielago $185,000 Ferrari: 430 $175,000 Porsche: 911 $170,000 Ferrari: 550 $160,000 Bentley: Continental, GT $159,900 Lamborghini: Gallardo eBay claims they sell 3-4 Ferraris on their mobile app each month. Yes, mobile commerce is not limited to small items. While I would wait to get home and fire up the PC, the current generation that has grown up with mobile phones has no issue satisfying their impulses. Dave Sikora of Digby told me he's seen people buy furniture sets, mattresses, and diamonds via their mobile phones. I guess mobile commerce is rapidly becoming the norm.

• Custom Profile Provider with Web Deployment Project

  I wrote about implementing a custom profile provider inside of your ASP.NET MVC application yesterday. If you haven’t read the article, don’t sweat it.  Most of the stuff I write is rubbish anyway. Since you have joined me today, though, I might as well offer up a little tip: you can run into trouble, like I did, if you enable your custom profile provider inside of an application which is deployed using a Web Deployment Project.  Everything will run great on your local machine and you’ll probably take an early lunch because you got the code running in no time flat and the build server is happy and all tests pass and, gosh, maybe you’ll just cut out early because it is Friday after all.  But then the first user hits the integration machine and, that’s right, yellow screen of death. Lucky you, just as you’re walking out the door, the user kindly sends the exception message and stack trace: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: type Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Stack Trace: [ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: type] System.Activator.CreateInstance(Type type, Boolean nonPublic) +2796915 System.Web.Profile.ProfileBase.CreateMyInstance(String username, Boolean isAuthenticated) +76 System.Web.Profile.ProfileBase.Create(String username, Boolean isAuthenticated) +312 User error?  Not this time. Damn! One hour later… you notice the harmless “Treat as library component (remove the App_Code.compiled file)” setting on the Output Assemblies Tab of your Web Deployment Project. You have no idea why, but you uncheck it.  You test and everything works great both locally and on the integration machine.  Application users think you’re the best and you’re still going to catch the last half hour of happy hour.  Happy Friday.

• A BYOD World in Mobile Enterprise Brings the Need to Adapt

  Yesterday brought a lot of news coverage that Cisco has stopped funding and planning its Cius enterprise-grade tablet.  Citing “market transitions” in which an increasing number of people b ring their own smartphones and tablets to work, Cisco General Manager OJ Winge said in a post on the company's official blog that “Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what’s available today.”  Employees are “bringing their preferences to work” and collaboration “has to happen beyond a walled garden,” he said.The blog post also cited a recently released Cisco study which found that 95% of organizations surveyed allow employee-owned devices in some way, shape or form in the office, and, 36% of surveyed enterprises provide full support for employee-owned devices.   How is Cisco planning to move forward to adapt to this changing business environment?  Instead of focusing on tablets for enterprise customers, Cisco will instead "double down" on software that works across a variety of operating systems and smart phones and tablets, Winge said.See the post from the Cisco blog here - http://blogs.cisco.com/collaboration/empowering-choice-in-collaboration/ We at Gizmox recognize this need to adapt to the changing environment.  Our Enterprise Mobile solution is designed and built for that post-PC, BYOD business world.  We recognized the importance of providing a cross-platform solution that can easily target different devices and operating systems.   The first DMO that I would like to introduce you to is one of the most common and basic DMV’s out there. I use the term DMV because this DMO is actually a view as opposed to a function. This DMV is server-scoped and it returns information about all requests that are currently executing on your SQL Server instance. To illustrate what this DMV returns, lets take a look at the results. As you can see, this DMV returns a wealth of information about requests occurring on your server. You are able to see the SPID, the start time of a request, current status, and the command the SPID is executing. In addition to this you see columns for sql_handle and plan_handle. These columns (when combined with other DMO’s we will discuss later) can return the actual sql text that is being executed on your server as well as the actual execution plan that is cached and being used. This DMV also returns information about various wait types that may be occurring for your spid. The percent_complete column displays a percentage to completion for certain database actions such as DBCC CheckDB, Database Restores, Rollback’s, etc. In addition to these, you are also able to see the amount of reads, writes, and cpu that the SPID has consumed. You will find this DMV to be one of the primary DMV’s that you use when looking for information about what is occurring on your server.

• Mac OS X - Force screen resolution

  Hello! I'm trying to use the lastest version of a certain development tool and it's sort of difficult to use on a 1200x800 display. Using VMWare Fusion, I can set the screen resolution inside a VM to 1900x1200 on my 13" MBP and it's still usable. Does anyone know of a way to force Mac OS X to scale it's resolution? I tried ScreenResX and it said the scaled resolution was "invalid" or something like that. I know that there are only a certain number of pixels on the screen. I'm only asking how to scale, not set a legit resolution. My current hack solution is to run Snow Leopard Server in a VM with resolution scaling.

• NTFS and NTFS-3G

  I have a netbook with Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and a desktop with Mint 10 (~ Ubuntu Desktop 10.10) Both of them have read/write NTFS partitions mounted via /etc/fstab. And it works fine. Ive read on net, google, forums, and several posts here, that NTFS-3G is the driver that allows you to have full access to an NTFS partition, that it is new, great, powerful, yada-yada. But... my entries use plain ntfs, no mention of -3g, and they still work perfectly as read and write. Am I already using ntfs-3g? Does 10.04 onwards use it "under the hood"? How can i check that in my system? Should my /etc/fstab entries should use "ntfs-3g" as the fs? Why some posts refer to mount ntfs, while others say mount ntfs-3g ? Im really confused about where should I use fs-type names (ntfs) or driver names (ntfs-3g?). Or is it irrelevant now, and ntfs is always an "alias" or something for ntfs-3g nowadays? Ive read some posts her, from Oct-10 and Nov-10 e that "announce" that ntfs-3g "finally arrived"... thats way post-Lucid 10.04. Could someone please undo this mess in my head, and explain the relation between ntfs and ntfs-3g, what is the current status (10.04 and 10.10), where should i use each, etc (regarding mount, fstab, etc)? Sorry for the long, confusing, redudant text... im really getting sleepy

• IIS 7 503 error, application pool stop crash, defdoc.dll could not be loaded due to a configuration

  Hi All, Currently trying to get iis 7 to work, but every time I request a page, the application pool goes into stopped status. In the event log this is what comes back. The Module DLL 'C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\defdoc.dll' could not be loaded due to a configuration problem. The current configuration only supports loading images built for a x86 processor architecture. The data field contains the error number. I've already re installed iis, any other ideas, I read that someone fixed this by downloading the dll again, but this seems like an odd solution. Thanks. EDIT I have now replaced the file with one I downloaded off the internet, and now it says The Module DLL 'C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\protsup.dll' could not be loaded due to a configuration problem. I hope I don't have to get 100's of these.

• What's the value of a Facebook fan?

  In his blog posting titled "Why Each Facebook Fan Is Worth $2,000 to J. Crew," Joe Skorupa lays out a simplistic calculation for assigning a value to social media efforts within Facebook. While I don't believe the metric, at least its a metric that can be applied consistently. Trying to explain the ROI to management to start a program, then benchmarking to show progress isn't straightforward at all. Social media isn't really mature enough to have hard-and-fast rules around valuation (yet). When I'm asked by retailers how to measure social media efforts, I usually fess-up and say I can't show an ROI but the investment is so low you might was well take a risk. Intuitively, it just seems like a good way to interact with consumers, and since your competition is doing it, you better do it as well. Vitrue, a social media management company, has calculated a fan as being worth $3.60 per year based on impressions generated in Facebook's news feed. That means a fan base of 1 million translates into at least $3.6 million in equivalent media over a year. Don't believe that number either? Fine, Vitrue now has a tool that let's you adjust the earned media value of a fan. Jump over to http://evaluator.vitrue.com/ and enter your brand's Facebook URL to get an assessment of the current value and potential value. For fun, I compared Abercrombie & Fitch (1,077,480 fans), Gap (567,772 fans), and Wet Seal (294,479 fans). The image below shows the results assuming the default $5 earned media value for a fan. The calculation is more complicated than just counting fans. It also accounts for postings and comments. Its possible for a brand with fewer fans to have a higher value based on frequency and relevancy of posts. The tool gathers data via the Social Graph API for the past 30 days of activity. I'm not sure this tool assigns the correct value either, but hey, its a great start.

• Design For Asynchronous User Interface

  I have been working on a integration that has posed an interesting user interface conundrum that I would like suggestions for. The user interface is displayed within a third party product. The state of the interface is supplied by calls to a service I have written. There can be small delays between the actual state changing the the user interface changing due to the polling for state by the third party. When a user interacts with the user interface, requests are sent back to my application. This then affects the state and the next state poll request will update the user interface. The problem is that the delay between pressing a button and seeing the user interface update is perhaps 1 or 2 seconds and in usability testing I can see that people are clicking again before the user interface updates, thinking that they haven't properly clicked the first time. Given the constraints (we can only update the user interface via the polling mechanism - if we updated it when they clicked, the polling might return and overwrite the change causing unpredictable / undesirable results)... what can we do to make the user experience better. My current idea is to show a message for a couple of seconds so people know their click was accepted, the message would not be affected by the state polling, so wouldn't be prematurely removed / overwritten etc. I'm sure there are other ideas out there and I'm also confident someone has a better idea that I have!

• Wyse Z Class Thin Client (WES7) Image Deployment

  We are currently working on deploying a few Wyse WES7 thin clients (Z Class, exact model escapes me at the moment). We have WDM setup, and are able to see new clients show up, interact with them, pull/push images. Our current workflow is something like this: Unpack & boot up the device Disable Windows Firewall, reboot Device shows up in WDM Publish our custom image to the new device. My question is whether or not there is a way I can bypass step 2, and put my image on the client right out of the box. Either using PXE or USB boot disk, such that I can boot into some sort of menu and tell the client to pull a particular image from the WDM server. With HP thin clients, we have a rule setup which detects new clients on the network and pushes our custom image to them first time they show up. I haven't been able to figure it out with Wyse.

• Full-text indexing? You must read this

  For those of you who may have missed it, Peter Flies, Principal Technical Support Engineer for WebCenter Content, gave an excellent webcast on database searching and indexing in WebCenter Content.  It's available for replay along with a download of the slidedeck.  Look for the one titled 'WebCenter Content: Database Searching and Indexing'. One of the items he led with...and concluded with...was a recommendation on optimizing your search collection if you are using full-text searching with the Oracle database.  This can greatly improve your search performance.  And this would apply to both Oracle Text Search and DATABASE.FULLTEXT search methods.  Peter describes how a collection can become fragmented over time as content is added, updated, and deleted.  Just like you should defragment your hard drive from time to time to get your files placed on the disk in the most optimal way, you should do the same for the search collection. And optimizing the collection is just a simple procedure call that can be scheduled to be run automatically.   beginctx_ddl.optimize_index('FT_IDCTEXT1','FULL', parallel_degree =>'1');end; When I checked my own test instance, I found my collection had a row fragmentation of about 80% After running the optimization procedure, it went down to 0% The knowledgebase article On Index Fragmentation and Optimization When Using OracleTextSearch or DATABASE.FULLTEXT [ID 1087777.1] goes into detail on how to check your current index fragmentation, how to run the procedure, and then how to schedule the procedure to run automatically.  While the article mentions scheduling the job weekly, Peter says he now is recommending this be run daily, especially on more active systems. And just as a reminder, be sure to involve your DBA with your WebCenter Content implementation as you go to production and over time.  We recently had a customer complain of slow performance of the application when it was discovered the database was starving for memory.  So it's always helpful to keep a watchful eye on your database.

• Ubuntu can't find the correct max resolution with Samsung SyncMaster SA300

  i decided to install ubuntu also on my desktop PC (Windows has been exorcised from my life) but i am having some problems i didn't have with previous hardware configurations. My display is a Samsung SyncMaster SA300, on windows vista the maximum resolution (1920x1080) worked well, but now, ubuntu (after installing fglrx drivers) tells me that the maximum resolution is 1600x1200 I googled a lot last night, and i found a lot of people solving this (on different displays though) with xrandr. I was not able to do it, because xrandr keep complaining "you goddamn maximum resolution is 1600x1600". • OpenVPN on Ubuntu 11.10 - unable to redirect default gateway

  I'm trying to connect to connect to OpenVPN server from my Ubuntu 11.10 machine. I use the following command to do it (under root user): openvpn --config /home/vladimir/client.ovpn Everything seems to be OK, it connects normally without any warnings and errors, but when I try to browse the internet I see that I still use my own IP address, so VPN connection doesn't work. • OpenGL ES Shader help (Blending)

  Earlier I required assistance getting to grips with how to retain the alpha channel of a transparent texture in my colourised texture shader program. Whilst playing with that first version of my program (before obtaining the solution to my first requirement), I managed to enable transparency for the whole texture (effectively blending via GLSL), and I quite liked this, and I would now like to know if and how it is possible to retain this blending effect, on top of the existing output without affecting the original alpha channel - as I don't know how to input this transparency via the parameter that is already being provided with the textures alpha channel. A basic example of the blending program I am referring to (minus any other functionality) is as follows... varying vec2 texCoord; uniform sampler2D texSampler; void main() { gl_FragColor = vec4(texture2D(texSampler,texCoord).xyz,0.5); } Where 0.5 is the transparency (blending effect) of the whole texture. This is the current version of my program, which provides the ability to colour a texture according the colour parameter passed to the program, and retains the alpha channel of the original texture. varying vec2 texCoord; uniform sampler2D texSampler; uniform vec3 colour; void main() { gl_FragColor = vec4(colour,1) * vec4(texture2D(texSampler,texCoord).xyz,texture2D(texSampler,texCoord).w); } I need to know if it is possible to apply transparency on top this program, without affecting the original alpha channel which I have already preserved.
