  Welcome to ADF Mobile team's weblog.  My name is Joe Huang - I am the product manager for ADF Mobile.  Oracle ADF Mobile is a part of Oracle's Application Development Framework (ADF) that support the development of enterprise/business applications that run on mobile devices.  The development tool for this framework is of course Oracle JDeveloper.  As some of you may know, we currently support the development of mobile browser-based application - this part of product is called ADF Mobile Browser.  Additionally, we are close to release a technology preview of ADF Mobile Client, which supports development of on-device, disconnect capable mobile applications.  What's truly unique about ADF Mobile development process is that it's a very visual and declarative experience, while still allow power Java developers to completely extend the framework to their liking.  The framework also provides a rich set of services needed by an enterprise-grade mobile application - these services would literally take years to implement if they are to be built from the ground up.  However, by using JDeveloper and ADF Mobile, you get the entire framework at your service!In the coming entries, the ADF Mobile product development team will publish any news, best practices, our observation on mobile technology trends, or just our experiences in playing with "gadgets".  Be sure to check back on this page!Sincerely,Joe HuangOracle

• JavaOne Latin America Underway

  JavaOne Latin America started officially today, but lots of networking has already happened. Last night some JUG leaders, Java Champions, and members of the Oracle Java development and marketing teams had dinner together. The conversation ranged from the new direction of JavaFX to how to improve JUG attendance. Maricio Leal shared the idea some Brazilian JUGs have of putting Java Evangelists and experts on a boat and having them visit JUGs on cities along the Amazon river.  We discussed ideas, and shared dessert pizza. It was the perfect community get together! If you see Brazilian Java Man Bruno Souza, ask him what he is bringing to the party.Today, at JavaOne Latin America, all the sessions were full, and developers were spilling into the hallways. Session content was selected with the help of 14 Java thought leaders from Latin America. JavaOne Program Committee Chair, Sharat Chander, said "I'm thrilled that at this JavaOne over half of the content is coming from the community." Between sessions, developers take advantage of the Oracle Technology Network lounge to grab a snack and use their laptops.  OTN LoungeIt promises to be a great JavaOne.

• Internet suddenly stopped working

  I was using NoMachine to access Ubuntu 11.10 when suddenly the internet on Ubuntu stopped working. Now Ubuntu doesn't recognize the internet at all (including locally). Symptoms: Doesn't recognize the fact that there is an ethernet cable attached. (I've tried switching cables, didn't work.) GUI says "No network devices available" Can't ping external IP addresses. Tried changing /etc/network/interfaces to eth1 instead of eth0 but it didn't work. ifconfig provides no output relating to eth0. When I type "/etc/init.d/networking restart" it tells me "Cannot find device 'eth0'/Failed to bring up eth0." The network settings had used a static IP address prior to the crash. I don't know why it won't recognize the ethernet (I think this is the fundamental problem, but I might be wrong) and why it stopped working so suddenly--I haven't installed any updates lately. Any ideas? Any more information I should provide? EDIT: lspci recognizes the Ethernet controller; netstat does not. lspci calls it "Intel Corporation Device 0000"

• Where Is SilverLight Toolkit Installed On My PC?

  This is first question that ran though my mind once I finished installation of SilverLight Toolkit today. When we install the toolkit, the installation wizard does not ask us for any installation folder options and after completion of installation there will not be any entries in to the All Programs section of start menu. After going through the documents, I found that installer silently places all the binaries, themes, samples documents under program files folder depending on the version of the toolkit. If you installed version 4.0 of the toolkit then it will be placed in the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0 Here is the list of other useful folder of SilverLight toolkit that we refer to often Bin  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0\Toolkit\Apr10\Bin   Samples  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0\Toolkit\Apr10\Samples   Themes  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0\Toolkit\Apr10\Themes   Source  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v4.0\Toolkit\Apr10\Source Please note this above listed folder names will not be exactly same on your computer as they vary from one version to another. First open the base folder  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight and then navigate through the available folders for locating the required ones. Hope this helps you.   There’s been a lot of recent talk in the industry about “big data”.  Much can be said about the importance of big data and the results from it, but you need to always consider the customer experience when analyzing and applying customer data. Personalization and merchandising drive the user experience.  Big data should enable you to gain valuable insight into each of your customers and apply that insight at the moment they are on your Web site, talking to one of your call center agents, or any other touchpoint.  While past customer experience is important, you need to combine that with what your customer is doing on your Web site now as well what they are doing and saying on social networking sites.  It’s key to have a 360 degree view of your customer across all of your touchpoints in order to provide that relevant and consistent experience that they come to expect when interacting with your brand. Big data can enable you to effectively market, merchandize, and recommend the right products to the right customers and the right time.  By taking customer data and applying it to product recommendations, you have an opportunity to gain a greater share of wallet through the cross-selling and up-selling of additional products and services.  You can also build sustaining loyalty programs to continue to engage with your customers throughout their long-term relationship with your brand.

• [MINI HOW-TO] Remove a Network Computer from Windows Home Server

  One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is the ability to backup and monitor the computers on your network. If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it.   Denis Pitcher, You posted this comment on my blog and some other blogs: Devteach's promotion for a one year MSDN subscription was not honoured and attempts to contact them result in a "we sent attendee info to MS, it's not our problem" response while attempts to contact Microsoft result in the suggestion that any queries should be redirect to Devteach. Hopefully not all attendees we're cheated though if you're considering attending a future Devteach it is recommended that you don't hold any expectation that they'll honour their promotions. I spoke to Jean-René Roy, DevTeach organizer and also to MSDN Canada folks.  Looks like the email you used to register for the conference is now bouncing (maybe a typo when you registered?).  That why you haven’t received any news about the offer.  The fact that you’re leaving the same comment on various blogs without your email address doesn’t help at all.  Thay want to contact you!  Also, looks like they never received your emails, maybe you used a the wrong email addresses. • Election 2012: Twitter Breaks Records with MySQL

  Twitter VP of Infrastructure Operations Engineering Mazen Rawashdeh shared news and numbers yesterday on his blog: "Last night, the world tuned in to Twitter to share the election results as U.S. voters chose a president and settled many other campaigns. Throughout the day, people sent more than 31 million election-related Tweets (which contained certain key terms and relevant hashtags). And as results rolled in, we tracked the surge in election-related Tweets at 327,452 Tweets per minute (TPM). These numbers reflect the largest election-related Twitter conversation during our 6 years of existence, though they don’t capture the total volume of all Tweets yesterday." "Last night, Twitter averaged about 9,965 TPS from 8:11pm to 9:11pm PT, with a one-second peak of 15,107 TPS at 8:20pm PT and a one-minute peak of 874,560 TPM. Seeing a sustained peak over the course of an entire event is a change from the way people have previously turned to Twitter during live events. • MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.3.12 Is Now Available!

  We are pleased to announce that MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.3.12 is now available for download on the My Oracle Support (MOS) web site. It will also be available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud in approximately 1-2 weeks. This is a maintenance release that contains several new features and fixes a number of bugs. • Mexico leading in Business Transformation Strategies:

  By [email protected] on April 15, 2010 8:31 AM By John Burke Group Vice President Oracle Applications Business Unit I recently completed a business tour in Mexico, and was surprised by both the economic vibrancy of the country and the thought leadership expressed by many of the customers I met. An example of the economic vibrancy of the country: across the street from my hotel was the local Bentley dealership, Coach Store, Yves Saint Laurent and of course a Starbucks. I only made it to Starbucks. Both the Coach Store and YSL had a line of folks waiting to get in... As for thought leadership, there were several illustrations only on the first day. I had the opportunity to meet with a branch of the Mexican Federal Government. Their questions were not about clerical task automation, far from it! We discussed citizen on-line access to fees and services - for example looking up the duty on an international goods shipment, or tracking that my taxes have been received, or the status of my request for a certain service. Eligibility, policies and status. Having an integrated rules or policy automation system that would allow businesses and citizens to access accurate information and ensure the proper collection of fees and payment for 3rd party provided services. Then in the afternoon, I met with the owner of a roofing company (note: most roofs in Mexico are flat and made of cement). This CEO started discussing how he wanted to transform his business from a cement products company to a service company and market 5-10-15 year service contracts which would guarantee the structural integrity of the roof and of course that the roof would remain waterproof. Although his products were guaranteed, they required an annual inspection and most home owners never schedule that inspection until it is too late and water damage has occurred. These emergency calls reduce his margin and reduce customer satisfaction. This lead to a discussion of business models in general and why long term differentiation can only come from service, not just for the music or news industries, but also for roofing companies! I completely agreed with the transformational concepts described in both meetings and quickly understood why there is a Bentley dealership near my hotel.

• Planning for the Recovery

  As we plan for 2011, there are many positive signs in the global economy, but also some lingering issues. Planning no longer is about extrapolating past performance and adjusting for growth. It is now about constantly testing the temperature of the water, formulating scenarios, assessing risk and assigning probabilities.  So how does one plan for recovery and improve forecast accuracy in such a volatile environment?  Here are some suggestions from a recent article I wrote, which was published in the December Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) newsletter from the AFP (Association of Financial Professionals): Increase the frequency of forecasting Get more line managers involved in the planning and forecasting process Re-consider what's being measured - i.e. key financial and operational metrics Incorporate risk and probability into forecasts Reduce reliance on spreadsheets - leverage packaged EPM applications To learn more about these best practices, check out the FP&A section of the AFP website and register to receive the FP&A newsletter.  AFP recently launched a new topic area focused on the FP&A function and items of interest to this group of finance professionals.  In addition to the FP&A quarterly newsletter, AFP will be publishing articles, running webinars and will have an FP&A track in their annual conference, which is in Boston next November.  Brian Kalish, AFP's Finance Lead, is hoping this initiative creates a valuable networking and information-sharing resource for FP&A professionals. • How to implement Facebook leaderboard game for mobile?

  I am in the final stages of developing an indie C# mobile game that I will deploy to iPhones and Androids using Mono. I wish to add push notifications and a Facebook leader board feature into the game, such that the user will be presented with a list of all his/her friends that are playing the game and their weekly scores in the main screen. I have ZERO experience with web development/networking/databases. I recently started researching the field and formed a basic understanding. Facebook has SDKs in PHP, JavaScript, obj-c and java, tho reading the documentation examples still feels cryptic to me since it involves web/server tech. After researching some more, I understood that my options for server side are basically PHP or ASP.Net. It seems that ASP.Net is more favorable in my case since I am already proficient with C# (but there is no ASP.net SDK from Facebook... I am not sure if this implies that I cant interact with Facebook using ASP.Net). On the down side some have mentioned higher costs for ASP.Net, tho I havent looked further into that aspect yet. I also understood that JavaScript is client side technology. I started going through tutorials of ASP.Net, I was thinking that ASP.Net is a purely server side management language, but it started feeling more like WPF as those tutorials started getting into very lengthy discussions about creating website interfaces and styles. I am not interested in that, I just want to have a web server which my app can somehow communicate with and get friends/scores. Am I learning the right technologies for my goal? should I be learning something else? I am posting this in hopes that someone who knows this field well can see through my problem and help guide me, otherwise I could spend months studying something that might not be the right solution to my goal.
