• How do I analyze vague Google Analytics data re traffic from Facebook?

  We have one Facebook fan page and two personal profiles that could be sending traffic and then there are the many facebook pages of friends etc. I am also running an ad campaign from my FB account for my husband's business which has a link from his personal FB profile and his fan page. On Google analytics for his business we get the following referring sites from Facebook: /ajax/emu/end.php which is listed under facebook.com / referral /l.php (which is a not-found page at FB /ajax/emu/end.php which is listed under apps.facebook.com Both of the working links send me to the home page of my profile, which is the account I am working from to create and review the FB ad campaign that we are running. Is this info telling me any useful information at all? Is there a best practice for tracking and analyzing Facebook traffic that is a lot more granular? thanks!

  For the first time I'm in the position where I'm helping interview potential front-end developers. (The other interviewer is more business & PM-focused, although he is a former developer.) I probe for knowledge and background in css, js, and other related technologies, but those questions are really just testing for lingo. I feel that it'd be unfair to ask very specific questions about css when we're not infront of a computer, because my style of programming css is a lot of guesswork. I've also been given websites that these web developers have written-- is that enough to go on for interviewing front-ends? We're also looking for general aptitude, rather than a databank of knowledge.

• What are good words for defining multiples?

  In databases you might take about one-to-many. This means there's one thing that maps to zero or more others. In this kind of style I'm looking for words that define min/max amounts of things. So far, I have: min max one 1 1 many 0 infinite optional 0 1 ??? 1 infinite Is there a single word that fits '???' to mean more than one? Do you have better alternatives for 'optional'? I'm wondering if there are any conventional names for those concepts?

• Alt + Tab window switcher preview stoped working

  It just stopped working. After I boot Ubuntu it does not work. When I run unity --replace it works again, but after restart problem occurs again. And that happens on every reboot. I have some startup apps, but I don't think that can be the problem. Any idea? UPDATE: Looks like I had some problems with firefox causing Alt+Tab to stop working. After reinstalling firefox and computer restart it works.

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site? If you see a "Not found" message, Ubuntu Software Center is working in the background to update the list of available apps. When I click on a link, the software centre opens and it says There isn’t a software package called “swordandsworcery” in your current software sources. I have waited for about 30 minutes now. I have also executed sudo apt-get update & restarted software centre to no avail. Do I keep waiting?

• How to implement the light trails for a tron game?

  Well I was creating a TRON style game, but had an issue with creating the actual light trails for the game. What I'm doing currently is I have an array the same size as my window in pixel size, implemented like this: int* collision[800][600]; Then when the bike goes on a certain pixel, it is marked with a 1 for traveled on. However what is the most efficient way to create a working light trail display? I tried to do something like this: int i, j; for(i=0; i<800; i++) for(j=0; j<600; j++) if(*collision[i][j] == 1) Image::applySurface(i, j, trailSurface, gameScreen); But it isn't working properly? It just fills the whole screen with a sprite instead. Whats a better/faster/working way to do this?

• Optimization of a Hybrid Pagination Scheme

  I'm working on a Web Application using node.js in which I'm building a partial copy of the database on the client-side to decrease the load on my server. Right now, I have a function like this (expressed as python-style pseudocode, but implemented in JavaScript): get(table_name,primary_key): if primary_key in cache[table_name]: return cache[table_name][primary_key] else: x = get_data_from_server(table_name,primary_key) # socket.io return cache[table_name][primary_key] = x While this scheme works perfectly well for caching individual rows, I'd like to extend it to support the creation of paginated tables ordered according to the primary_key, and loading additional data using the above function for only the current and possibly the adjacent pages. Now, I don't want to keep the list of primary keys on the server to be retrieved every time I need to change the page (which, for reasons beyond the scope here, will be very frequent), and keeping it on the client side, subject to real-time create/delete events from the server, doesn't seem that good an idea, even after compression (using ranges, instead of individual values). What is the best way to calculate which items are to be displayed on a random page, minimizing the space requirements & the need for communication with the server?

  I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? I know that Computer Science is a huge field and my question is very general, but I am looking for a 101-type survey of the high-level concepts, from which I can branch off into more specific areas of study.   Code Complete states that you should aways code into a language as opposed to code in it. By that, they mean Don't limit your programming thinking only to the concepts that are supported automatically by your language. The best programmers think of what they want to do, and then they assess how to accomplish their objectives with the programming tools at their disposal. (chapter 34.4) Doesn't this lead to using one style of programming in every language out there, regardless of the particular strengths and weaknesses of the language at hand? Or, to put the question in a more answerable format: Would you propose that one should try to encode one's problem as neatly as possible with the particulars of one's language, or should you rather search the most elegant solution overall, even if that means that you need to implement possibly awkward constructs that do not exist natively in one's language?

It's just a bunch of wire (as far as I can tell any way) and I was just wondering what would I have to learn/read/do to make such a thing (or at least to have a really basic understanding of what he did). He also made his own operating system, which I find really impressive. I know it will take a while and I am in no hurry. Note: I am a web programmer and also have done some desktop apps (a few years ago).

• It's 2011 - why do I still have to use tables for email?

  This might seem like a rant, but I am curious. CSS replaced tables for layout a long time ago. But we still have to use tables for layout when creating rich emails. Why is this? Are there any other options? Are there really technical constraints that prevent CSS from working in an email. What are they? I can see how linked or embedded style sheets might be a problem, but not even inline styles work. Is this ever going to change?

• Reassessment: What's a good analytics package to use for tracking user behavior in a native iOS app?

  Hello. I've been poking around google and SO for answers on this, but it doesn't seem to be very well discussed, so I thought I revisit the question. Is anyone using any analytics packages (like Google Analytics or Mixpanel) to track user behavior in their native iOS apps? The three I've come across are Flurry, Mixpanel, and Google Analytics. It sounds like Apple is still peeved at Flurry, so I don't want to mess with that. Mixpanel looks simple and easy to use, but I'd first like to hear from someone who has used it. Same goes with Google Analytics for the iPhone. I've just finished building an iPhone game and I'd like to begin tweaking it based on how the users are playing it. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with any of these analytics packages? Thanks so much!

• What are some good, simple examples for queues?

  I'm teaching CS2 (Java and data structures), and am having some difficulty coming up with good examples to use when teaching queues. The two major applications I use them for are multithreaded message passing (but MT programming is out of scope for the course), and BFS-style algorithms (and I won't be covering graphs until later in the term). I also want to avoid contrived examples. Most things that I think of, if I were actually going to solve them in a single-threaded fashion I would just use a list rather than a queue. I tend to only use queues when processing and discovery are interleaved (e.g. search), or in other special cases like length-limited buffers (e.g. maintaining last N items). To the extent practical, I am trying to teach my students good ways to actually do things in real programs, not just toys to show off a feature. Any suggestions of good, simple algorithms or applications of queues that I can use as examples but that require a minimum of other prior knowledge?

  Let's say I want to drop MSOffice permanently and switch to a free alternative, not having the need of opening the documents on other PC's except my own (I can also carry a portable version on a pendrive and edit the docs anywhere). I know 3 free office suites - LibreOffice, Abiword and Calligra. Which one of these is the most complete and provides the best features to be a viable alternative to MSOffice, without compromising the quality of the work I can produce on Office apps? Notice that I'm not focusing the question on compatibility between MSOffice and other suites but instead I am comparing their quality, taking in comparison MSOffice.
