• Relating ping to perceived browser GUI response

  We periodically get complaints of poor GUI (browser page) response that we need to explore. I am looking for a quick and cheap first check to see if the issue is network latency, or server performance. Has anyone encountered any discussion of ping time and perceived GUI response? I understand that GUI response is complicated, but it would be nice if we could find or develop a rule of thumb along the lines of "Hmmmm, ping is over 200, it might be network problems". Ideally, this lives in a script on the user's machine so that we can see the latency that they are seeing... (BASH, Linux). A reference to a good discussion page would be a fine answer, as would any recommendation of other source material.

• Aplication for generating cross table

  I need advice on whether there is an application for generating cross tables. I would imagine it so that I entered at the beginning of team names. Subsequently I wrote results, but always one and the second correct field would enrolled opposite result. I want it to count the total score etc. .. I hope I have expanded well.   I've got a large amount of .MKV video files which seem to all play at a very low volume - I end up having to turn the TV up all the way to hear them, which is really irritating when I switch to another channel and wake the dead because it's so loud. What I'm looking for is a command-line method to increase the volume (so I can run it on all of them quickly) that would hopefully work regardless of the audio codec in use in the particular file. (I don't mind hard-coding the output audio though). For reference, I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 on my server, and the files are being played back with Boxee on a Mac Mini, but the volume problem is the same on Windows too.

• ASP.NET app on Apache Mono Ubuntu compiler error as log4net is unable to be found

  I'm trying to get a vulnerable practice ASP.NET web application (WebGoat.NET) installed on Apache Mono on Ubuntu. I've followed this guide and it all went smoothly; however, whenever I try to run the app I get this error: The type or namespace name `log4net' could not be found. Are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference? Log4net.dll is in the lib folder of the application directory. It's also in the /usr/lib/mono/gac directory. I'm not sure where else it needs to be. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  I get strange disk io nread (bytes read) counter values (from kstat) on Solaris.   I want to write a python script that will open up this one excel file, "refresh" on the Bloomberg tab (with the Bloomberg add-in), and export all the individual sheets as csv? How can I do this? What are the basic things I should know and is there any reference script that I can use? I'm using Excel 2010 with the bloomberg plugin. • In Excel how can I sum all the numbers above the current cell?

  I want to have a column in Excel that consists of a header, a bunch of numbers, and then have the sum of those numbers at the bottom. I'd like the sum to adapt to the insertion of new numbers above the total. Something like this: Numbers 1 2 5 10 18 Total If I later insert 10 new numbers in the middle of the list, I want the sum to automatically include them. I know the SUM() function can sum a whole column, but if the total is also in that column then it complains about a circular reference. How can I just sum the numbers above the total?

  Hello I've been told I HAVE TO have custom error bars for an assignment I have to hand in. Okay, I have a scatter graph with twelve points, and the error for each one is different. It's the same plus and minus, but different for each one. The twelve different error values are sitting nicely in a column. I have been told I can reference that column in "custom error bars" simply by indicating the range of values, like F2-F14. However, I get an error message every time. When I open Custom Error Bars, it is set up like this: ={} obviously waiting for a function. The error message says remove the equals sign. How should I enter the value range, please ?

• Route using certain IP address

  I have a server with two public IPs. Both IPs are added to eth0 using ip addr add. Now I'd like to contact a server which uses IP address filtering. Only requests are allowed which use the second IP address. Is there are way to set this up using the standard route command in Linux? I guess that's not the case. So the only solution I see right now: Setup a virtual device let's say eth0:0 and bind the second IP address to it. Then I can reference the device in the route command. Edit: I can't use the second IP as primary one easily as this IP is used as failover IP.

Some of you may have first-hand experience with this in practice, so here the question goes: How can I disable password changing for an OpenLDAP user? The account must stay enabled, allowed to log on to workstations and work as usual, but should not be able to change its own password. Can this be done? If so, how difficult is it to implement it? All suggestions are appreciated! For reference: Servers and workstations are to run a mixture of FreeBSD and OpenBSD. Accounts to get password disabled are student or generic workstation accounts. Environment is a school.

  On a openVZ containing Deb7 I need to lock the maximum size of a folder, which is used to upload on a php based web server. The directory is synced, so I have to lock the maxsize. MAXSIZE should be upgradable by adding some physical disk later ... I want to use a file as a block device for a file system. So I have done : dd if=/dev/zero of=/disk2/filesystem.dat bs=1M count=100 Then, I made the filesystem on it mkfs.ext4 filesystem.dat Then I tried to mount it : mkdir /opt/filesystem ; mount /disk2/filesystem.dat /opt/filesystem My OpenVZ (it is on a VPS) has no loop module in the kernerl. So I got Could not find any loop device as usual under OpenVz So i think I have to use FUSE, but I really do not know HOW .... Any idea on locking the size of directory under OpenVZ ?

  I have a Google Drive spreadsheet where I would like to compute occurrences of date ranges. Hope it is clear what I mean. Partial hints are very welcome as well since I am pretty new to spreadsheeting.

  I have an HP dv5t laptop running Windows 7 64 bit with an Acer H235H monitor connected to it via an HDMI cable. The monitor has built-in speakers, which are a huge improvement over the laptop's speakers. However, when I want to use headphones, right now, I have to connect them to the laptop, then right-click the sound icon in the task bar, select Playback Devices, right click the monitor, and disable it. Is there any way to get Windows 7 to automatically switch the output to the headphones when they're plugged in? That's the behavior that happens without the monitor attached (i.e. it will switch from the laptop speakers to headphones when headphones are plugged in). I have the same issue with a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows 7 64-bit and an identical monitor, for reference.

  I'm trying to find a set of instructions for upgrading Vmware (ESXi and Vsphere) from 5.1 to 5.5, but all I'm finding online is a bunch of separate, incomplete knowledgebase articles which is making it difficult to get an overview of what's involved. What I'd like is a single, concise document that lists the steps involved. It could be a free online article, someone's blog, a small booklet, someone here who takes the trouble to write it out. • (How) does deleting open files on Linux and a FAT file system work?

  It's clear to me how deleting open files works on filesystems that use inodes - unlink() just decreases the link count to zero, and when the last file handle to the file is closed, the inode will be removed. But how does it work when using a file system that doesn't use inodes, like FAT32, with Linux? Some experiments suggest that deleting open files is still possible (unlike on Windows, where the unlink call wouldn't succeed), but what happens when the file system is uncleanly unmounted? How does Linux mark the files as unlinked, when the file system itself doesn't support such an operation? Is the directory entry just deleted, but retained in memory (that would guarantee deletion after unmounting in any case, but would leave the file system in an inconsistent state), or will the deletion only be marked in memory, and written at the time the last file handle is closed, avoiding possible corruption, but restoring the deleted files after an unclean unmount?

• DNSCache excesive memory usage Windows Server 2008 R2

  We are having an issue with the dnscache service where its memory usage is becoming excessive (~6GB) after a week or two. Restarting the service frees this memory but performing ipconfig /flushdns does not, an ipconfig /displaydns shows aprox 15-20 entries in the cache. We have checked and there appears to be aprox 150 DNS queries per second taking place but I would not expect this to have the effect of causing this memory issue. I have tried to search MSDN for hotfixes or bug reports but I could only find a reference to a memory leak in windows 2003. can anyone suggest how to proceed.

• Google document does not print correctly on Mac 10.7.5 using Chrome

  When attempting to print a Google document, the header does not get printed at all and the text starts almost in the center of the page - cutting off almost half of the text in the printable area horizontally. The vertical alignment appears fine, with the exception of hte missing header. I have searched the product forums at Google, but they are virtually unusable. Endless threads without a solution! For reference, the document prints fine from Windows XP using Chrome. I can also print from other applications on the Mac without issue - so I am thinking it's a Google doc issue at this point.

• JBoss view active user sessions

  We have a JBoss server with a single J2EE on it. I wish to find out who are the current active users using that application. Does JBoss give me any utilities that lets me view those existing sessions? (NOT the count, but who all are logged in) The question is kinda lame, but so is my JBoss knowledge :) I checked the JBoss community, but it only had a couple of relative unanswered questions there. The information i'm looking for would help me in maintenance cycles. I do not wish to reboot the system when users are still using it. We also need to keep a track of any illegal activities on our server. Hence the requirement. Would appreciate any pointers :) Regards, Abhi
