• JOGL: cannot run java on compiled class file

  I am running ubuntu Linux 11.10. I have followed the instructions on the site http://jogamp.org/jogl/www/ and downloaded everything with git to $HOME/jogamp and built everything with ant (although I would have prefered the files installed somewhere under /usr/local). I am trying to run a simple application with JOGL found on the Wikipedia site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_OpenGL In order to compile the file I had to add: export CLASSPATH.:$HOME/jogamp/jogl/build/jogl/classes in order to compile the code. • using compareTo in Binary Search Tree program

  I've been working on this program for a few days now and I've implemented a few of the primary methods in my BinarySearchTree class such as insert and delete. Insert seemed to be working fine, but once I try to delete I kept getting errors. So after playing around with the code I wanted to test my compareTo methods. Personally I'm especially interested in remote actors, but I guess a complete overview would be helpful to many others. • Suggestions for a Cron like scheduler in Python?

  I'm looking for a library in Python which will provide at and cron like functionality. I'd quite like have a pure Python solution, rather than relying on tools installed on the box; this way I run on machines with no cron. For those unfamiliar with cron: you can schedule tasks based upon an expression like: 0 2 * * 7 /usr/bin/run-backup # run the backups at 0200 on Every Sunday 0 9-17/2 * * 1-5 /usr/bin/purge-temps # run the purge temps command, every 2 hours between 9am and 5pm on Mondays to Fridays. The cron time expression syntax is less important, but I would like to have something with this sort of flexibility. If there isn't something that does this for me out-the-box, any suggestions for the building blocks to make something like this would be gratefully received. Edit I'm not interested in launching processes, just "jobs" also written in Python - python functions. By necessity I think this would be a different thread, but not in a different process. To this end, I'm looking for the expressivity of the cron time expression, but in Python. Cron has been around for years, but I'm trying to be as portable as possible. I cannot rely on its presence.

  Hi: I am trying to implement a UDF using Excel COM Add-in(2003) with Visual Studio 2005 in C#. I would like to implement the UDF using async programming. The UDF is a slow operation as its results are fetched from a server. As an illustration(not a real world example),the following UDF works fine without any issue: public double mul(double number1, double number2) { return number1 * number2; } How can I do the same functionality in an async way: For example, I would like the UDF return immediately and later when the results are available from a server, I would like to update the desired cells. // This method returns immediately. public object mul(double number1, double number2) { return "calculating"; } // This method of a worker thread will update the results. public OnResultsAvailable(object result) { // Question: how should I update the cells that triggerred the calcualtions above? } Constraints: I cannot use Excel RTD as I have to work with existing codebase written using Excel C# COM Add-in. • Java Random Slowdowns on Mac OS cont'd

  I asked this question a few weeks ago, but I'm still having the problem and I have some new hints. The original question is here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1651887/java-random-slowdowns-on-mac-os Basically, I have a java application that splits a job into independent pieces and runs them in separate threads. The threads have no synchronization or shared memory items. The only resources they do share are data files on the hard disk, with each thread having an open file channel. Most of the time it runs very fast, but occasionally it will run very slow for no apparent reason. If I attach a CPU profiler to it, then it will start running quickly again. If I take a CPU snapshot, it says its spending most of its time in "self time" in a function that doesn't do anything except check a few (unshared unsynchronized) booleans. I don't know how this could be accurate because 1, it makes no sense, and 2, attaching the profiler seems to knock the threads out of whatever mode they're in and fix the problem. Also, regardless of whether it runs fast or slow, it always finishes and gives the same output, and it never dips in total cpu usage (in this case ~1500%), implying that the threads aren't getting blocked. I have tried different garbage collectors, different sizings the parts of the memory space, writing data output to non-raid drives, and putting all data output in threads separate the main worker threads. Does anyone have any idea what kind of problem this could be? Could it be the operating system (OS X 10.6.2) ? I have not been able to duplicate it on a windows machine, but I don't have one with a similar hardware configuration.

• Windows 7 Aero Theme Progress Bar Bug?

  I have ran into what I consider to be a progress bar bug on Windows 7. To demonstrate the bug I created a WinForm application with a button and a progress bar. In the button's 'on-click' handle I have the following code. private void buttonGo_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { this.progressBar.Minimum = 0; this.progressBar.Maximum = 100; this.buttonGo.Text = "Busy"; this.buttonGo.Update(); for (int i = 0; i <= 100; ++i) { this.progressBar.Value = i; this.Update(); System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10); } this.buttonGo.Text = "Ready"; } The expected behavior is for the progress bar to advance to 100% and then the button text to change to 'Ready'. However, when developing this code on Windows 7, I noticed that the progress bar would rise to about 75% and then the button text would change to 'Ready'. Assuming the code is synchronous, this should not happen! On further testing I found that the exact same code running on Windows Server 2003 produced the expected results. Furthermore, choosing a non aero theme on Windows 7 produces the expected results. In my mind, this seems like a bug. Often it is very hard to make a progress bar accurate when the long operation involves complex code but in my particular case it was very straight forward and so I was little disappointed when I found the progress control did not accurately represent the progress. Has anybody else noticed this behavior? Has anybody found a workaround?

• Response.Redirect not firing due to code to prevent re-submission

  I have an event which needs to contact some third party providers before performing a redirect (think 'final payment page on ecommerce site') and hence has some lag associated with its processing. It is very important that these third party providers are not contacted more than once, and sometimes impatient users may try and refresh the page (hence re-submitting the data). The general code structure is: If Session("orderStatus") <> 'processing' Then Session("orderStatus") = 'processing' DoThirdPartyStuffThatTakesSomeTime() Response.Redirect("confirmationPage.asp", True) End If The problem is, if the user refreshes the page, the response.redirect does not happen (even though the rest of the code will run before the redirect from the original submission). It seems that the new submission creates a new thread for the browser which takes precedence - it skips this bit of code obviously to prevent the third party providers being contacted a second time, and since there is no redirect, just comes back to the same page. The whole second submission may have completed before the first submission has finished its job. Any help on how I can still ignore all of the subsequent submissions of the page, but still make the redirect work...? Thanks

• Need help running Python app as service in Ubuntu with Upstart

  I have written a logging application in Python that is meant to start at boot, but I've been unable to start the app with Ubuntu's Upstart init daemon. When run from the terminal with sudo /usr/local/greeenlog/main.pyw, the application works perfectly. Here is what I've tried for the Upstart job: /etc/init/greeenlog.conf # greeenlog description "I log stuff." start on startup stop on shutdown script exec /usr/local/greeenlog/main.pyw end script My application starts one child thread, in case that is important. I've tried the job with the expect fork stanza without any change in the results. I've also tried this with sudo and without the script statements (just a lone exec statement). In all cases, after boot, running status greeenlog returns greeenlog stop/waiting and running start greeenlog returns: start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.61" (uid=1000 pid=2496 comm="start) interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Start" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init")) Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong?   Hi, I've built a ASP.NET webservice and I'm trying to access it from a Blackberry. I've been testing it out with multiple devices and the simulator and it works fine, but there's just the one Blackberry 9000 (It's not the model, I've tried it out with another Blackberry 9000), and it's stuck waiting for a response from the server. • ExecutorService memory leak on exception

  I am having a hard time tracking this down since the profiler keeps crashing (hotspot error). Before I go too deep into figuring it out I'd like to know if I really have a problem or not :-) I have a few thread pools created via: Executors.newFixedThreadPool(10); The threads connect to different web sites and, on occasion, I get connection refused and wind up throwing an exception. When I later on call Future.get() to get the result it will then catch the ExecutionException that wraps the exception that was thrown when the connection could not be made. The program uses a fairly constant amount of memory up until the point in time that the exceptions get thrown (they tend to happen in batches when a particular site is overloaded). After that point the memory again remains constant but at a higher level. So my question is along the lines of is the memory behaviour (reported by "top" on Unix) expected because the exceptions just triggered something or do I probably have an actual leak that I'll need to track down? Additionally when Future.get() throws an exception is there anything else I need to do besides catch the exception (such as call Future.cancel() on it)?

I've reproduced the problem and have verified that only when our software and the customers software are both installed (although not necessarily running at logoff) does the log off problem occur. I've observed that WM_ENDSESSION messages are not reaching the running windows when the user tries to log off and I know that the third party software uses a kernel driver. • Are finalizers ever allowed to call other managed classes' methods?

  I used to be pretty sure the answer is "no", as explained in Overriding the Finalize method and Object.Finalize documentation. However, while randomly browsing through FileStream in Reflector, I found that it can actually call just such a method from a finalizer: private SafeFileHandle _handle; ~FileStream() { if (this._handle != null) { this.Dispose(false); } } protected override void Dispose(bool disposing) { try { ... } finally { if ((this._handle != null) && !this._handle.IsClosed) // <=== HERE { this._handle.Dispose(); // <=== AND HERE } [...] } } I started wondering whether this will always work due to the exact way in which it's written, and hence whether the "do not touch managed classes from finalizers" is just a guideline that can be broken given a good reason and the necessary knowledge to do it right. I dug a bit deeper and found out that the worst that can happen when the "rule" is broken is that the managed object being accessed had already been finalized, or may be getting finalized in parallel on a separate thread. So if the SafeFileHandle's finalizer didn't do anything that would cause a subsequent call to Dispose fail then the above should be fine... right? Question: so there might after all be situations in which a method on another managed class may be called reliably from a finalizer? I've always believed this to be false, but this code suggests that it's possible and that there can be good enough reasons to do it. Bonus: Observe that the SafeFileHandle will not even know it's being called from a finalizer, since this is just a normal call to Dispose(). The base class, SafeHandle, actually has two private methods, InternalDispose and InternalFinalize, and in this case InternalDispose will be called. Isn't this a problem? Why not?...

• Recommend me an architecture for this Facebook application

  Firstly, this question is subjective. There is not a right answer for this question and it really depends on what works for you. I'm hoping to use this thread as a breeding ground for ideas. I hope this is acceptable in this medium. I'm working on building a Facebook app that will be replacing an already popular app that gets ~50k hits a day. The original app is using a very typical LAMP setup with help from some Zend libraries for database layer extraction. For the most part the app worked well, except to solve a lot of issues I ended up fragmenting tables to speed things up. As a result, I couldn't do a lot of things with the app that I wanted to (namely any processing using aggregate data that needed to be returned quickly) So I'm starting to design plans for the next version of this application, and I have a whole bunch of new and cool features that I know would choke my current setup. I'm looking for technological recommendations of data storage methods that scale well. The database does not necessarily need to be relational, simple key/value storage would suffice (although at present time I know little to nothing about KV stores) What's your recommendation? How would you tackle this? I'd like to take a completely free approach to this -- although I am most familiar and comfortable using PHP, I want to leave all technical options open.

• can not override showDialog in Activity tab

  Trying to downgrade my appl from android 2.2 (API 8) down to android 2.1 (API7), I'm facing some issues with dialog boxes. Based on this thread, I'm trying to catch these exceptions but can't override the showDialog method.
