• Two users sharing the same computer

  I need to share my pc with a friend of mine living in India. His pc is a p4 and he needs a bit of horsepower for calculation. Since I have an i5 I thought to let him vnc and use it but this would not allow me to use the computer at the same time. Is there a way to use the computer at the same time with different users? I've read Xorg is able to do this but I am not sure is the best solution nor I can implement it. We have Ubuntu 12.04 64bit on the i5 side and Ubuntu 12.04 32bit on the p4 side. Thank you for your kind help.

• mayavi2 installing has problem (ubuntu 12.04)

  I'm using ubuntu 12.04 and python 2.7.3-0ubuntu2 is already installed. I have a problem during installing mayavi2 from ubuntu software center. Error message is : Package dependencies cannot be resolved This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. Details: The following packages have unmet dependencies mayavi2: Depends: python-numpy (= 1:1.6.1) but 1:1.6.1-6ubuntu1 is to be installed Depends: python-numpy-abi9 but it is a virtual package Depends: python (< 2.8) but 2.7.3-0ubuntu2 is to be installed Depends: python-vtk (= 5.4.2-5) but 5.8.0-5 is to be installed I've searched to solve this problem for a long time but I didn't solve yet. • Player position triggering teleports

  I'm developing a Minecraft plugin (bukkit) in which a server admin can create 'portals' - a small region that will teleport any players who enter it. I have the teleportation sorted and I know how I could define areas that the player's position could be tested against. This would involve an ArrayList containing the zones and then hooking the PlayerMoveEvent so that the ArrayList is searched each time for a matching portal region. Although this method would work, I doubt that it would be very efficient when 100+ players are all moving around at the same time. Is there a better way of checking a player position against a set of 'zones' / regions?

• Programming tourism

  I'm going on vacation to Paris, France for 10 days. Actually, it's my girlfriend's wish to go there but I'm not very interested in visiting, sightseeing, etc. Recently, I came up with an idea of trying to do something like programming tourism. :) I'd like to do something related to programming in a startup-like company. I do not want a salary or any kind of compensation. I want to overview process, social aspects, environment and "what it feels like" to development software in another country. I'm from Russia. I've been a software developer since 2003. I prefer C#4 but I'm ready to use anything Turing-complete. I have some MS certifications and am familiar with all .NETs since 1.1. Currently I'm finishing PhD in CS. I'm interested in multidimensional indexing and I can turn any piece of data and code to OLAP system. :) But it'd take too much time. What can I do? I have no more than one week. I want a totally complete project in a short amount of time. Implement some features in well-tested project Do a code review Debug memory, performance and concurrency issues Do unit testing So, about the questions: Is it legal? I'm ready to sign NDA if it's necessary. I'll have tourist visa. Is it possible? I'm really sure that bureaucratic companies with lots of HRs and PMs will not allow such experiments. But small companies can afford it. I'm ready to guarantee support on my code after leaving home :) P.S. I still havn't started learning French :) I hope it will not take too much time :) P.P.S. Yes, it's girlfriend-approved. What's in it for me? It's fun. It's fun to see new systems and people who created them. It's fun to complete meaningful things. Quickly. What's in it for them? Feature, debug, review or test. If my short-term colleagues will like this style of working I can invite them to make same trip into my company :) I think in Russia it's even more exciting :)

• Did I choose proper career path? [closed]

  I am a C# Junior. My company has it's own enterprise documents-flow system written, my job along with 10 other programmers is to write modules/add-ons for it. I am totally bored of this job, I dont like Microsoft's technologies stack (dont hate me here, just subjective), but it's plain boring, enterprise is boring (subjective again, everyone's tastes differ), days on this work last long and I am tired of it. In short - I dont like my job. In my spare time I am doing PHP-development and I totally like it. I am also doing web-design, so I am LAMP-kind of guy who loves his Ubuntu and does design aswell. I know that most programmers don't do design themselves, so some person is either all about design or all about coding, but I enjoy both and do both. I often get interesting sites orders, I love to make whole websites with all the design, I love the feeling of site completeness, I enjoy talking with customers. I like that PHP is simple and skill cap is lower than one of java, meaning I can become expert in it after some years. But C# (and J2EE also) pay more, and I am doing really good in C#. But I dont like it. I can go for J2EE, platform itself seems more fun to me rather than .NET, but EE development is still boring to me. But it seems higher payed, easier to find job (since PHP is too common for its easiness. But if you are expert in something it doesnt matter, right? Just a higher skillcap.) Question: I want to go on with freelance. I want to have an opportunity to start my own startup in web. Actually I have a browser-game already written by myself, it earns me around 500$ per month which I am really proud of since I am 21 only and still noob in coding. I want to find part-time PHP job. 3 days per week so I can get some stable income, I can work in team and learn from them, social factor matters aswell as ensurance and diversity. I also want my total income (freelance + part-time job + own startup maybe)to be not too much less than one I have working in EE development sector. Maximum of 25% lower, but not more. Is it all possible if I stick with web-development (LAMP + HTML/CSS/JS/Jquery/AJAX)? Or is it easier to reach my goals with EE development?

  I have commercial experience in one programming language but I want to make a switch to another programming language (C#/.NET). I am in full-time employment so whenever I get free time I read relevant books or use online resources available. My questions are - How do I develop experience in the new language of interest (without leaving current job)? The best way I find to learn is to develop a project - How do you / Where can you find new test projects which you can refer to in the interview (these don't have to be real projects but perhaps I can take the code with me in a usb stick as proof). Do you have any tips/advice for me regarding best way to switch career? My lanugauge of choice is C# - so c# related answers will be appreciated.

• Taking too long to get skills for entry level programmer position [closed]

  I don't have the skills for an entry level position as a .Net programmer. I am trying to learn what I need but there is too much to learn and too little time. What can I do? About two months ago, I went to a job interview for an entry level C# .Net programming/consultant position in NYC. When I heard back from them, they told me that the knowledge gap between what I knew and what they needed me to know was too big and I might have been a better fit if I had 6 months of experience. This was the first interview that I went on since graduating college. before the interview, I read a book on visual C#. Turns out it wasn't a very good book and I was missing a lot of key areas of knowledge such as ADO.net SQL (I had learned some LINQ) A little bit about how memory is handled Multiple threaded programming, etc. Because the book wasn't very good, the stuff I did know, I didn't know very well. I felt crushed. I've applied for jobs to gain experience but when recruiters hear that I have no experience they lose interest. I figured that I can at least work on my knowledge. Since then, I read "SQL Essentials" to cover the SQL bit and I found a pretty awesome book that is good enough to clear up what's hazy in my mind and covers almost all of the extra topics. The book is "C# 4.0: The Complete Reference" by Herbert Schildt. I'm even learning a lot about the topics I was familiar with. For a month now I've been working my way through this beast of a book. However, gaining the knowledge I need is taking too long. I can't hold off not having a full-time job much longer. I'm not stupid and I'm studying constantly pouring through the book, asking questions on stackoverflow, referencing the C# specification, etc. I have made great progress but there is just too much ground to cover. I'm on chapter 12 which is about a 3rd through the book. • failed upgrade to ubuntu 13.10!

  Okay so I went to upgrade to 13.10 and after some time went by my computer restarted.. I assumed since it need to due to the upgrade.. but once it came back on all that shows up is the desk top amd 2icons one for a game amd one for torrents. .. but NOTHING ELSE!!!! I can't open anything I also have to toolbar on the top where the date amd time would be and no launcher on the side for my icon shortcuts I basically can't do anything! Any help would be awesome I can't even get terminal to open via cnt-alt-t

• How to be a pro in several programming languages? [on hold]

  I love PHP and C# languages and i want to be excellent in both. I like to develop PHP applications using MySQL, Nginx, Memcached and so on technologies. I also like ASP.NET MVC stack and think it's great tools. But each technology requires a lot of time to master it. The same is true for C# web stack - there is a huge amount of things to be mastered like Azure, LINQ, Entity Framework ets. Mastering PHP means knowing how it works under the hood. Mastering C# means knowing CLR implementations on a deep level, knowing MSIL etc/ Where to get time for all this? Maybe this is "jack of all trades"? What can you advice?

• Knowledge of a Language vs. Games in Portfolio

  How important is the knowledge of a language versus the games that you have developed in your portfolio? To be more specific. Personally, I dislike C++ for several reason(mainly due to it's complexity, and pointers, and I prefer D as my language of choice thus far. Due to this, I've written two games in D instead of C++ that are my personal projects. Am I wasting my time with D? Should I start using C++ again? For reference, I have 6 months of experience in C++. It's the first language I learned. I have messed around with SDL/SFML and a bit of Direct3D with C++ as well. Even though I like D, i'd rather not waste my time learning it, if it in no way will help me get a job in the gaming industry.

  I have recently upgraded to Precise and had some errors. It seems to be quite random and with differences in the error reports. I have duly sent the reports hoping the system will have found the problem and sorted itself out. After the second error I am following the wizards (software...) advice and seeking help.   There is a coworker who has stolen credit for my work. I created a system that will show live statuses of printing machines throughout the plant. There was one glitch in it so the coworker made an improvement and then re-wrote the entire system (copying 90% of my code, yet he added a new piece of hardware then took over the project). Now he asks me programming questions from time to time. I don't mind teaching coworkers how to program, but since he has stolen my ideas and credit in the past I am reluctant to teach him all I know. Today he asks me for a particularly challenging algorithm for this system. His code now looks exactly like the way I would program! How would you handle the situation? How can I decline helping him without appearing to not being a team player?

• Process monitoring in Linux environment?

  I'm trying to write a multi threaded/processes application and it need to know how to monitor a process from another process all the time. So here is what I have, I have a 2 processes, each with multiple threads that handle the network part, then another 2 process also with multiple threads that interact with DB and with the network processes, what I need to do is that if for example one of the network processes goes down the DB process start sending to the live network process until the second one is up again. I'm using fifo between the DB and the network process. I was thinking of sending messages with message passing all the time but not sure whether this is a good idea or I need to use some other IPC for this issue, or probably neither is good and I need to use entirely something else?

• Unity 3D in 11.10 with VirtualBox in OS X?

  I'm having a horrible time with Unity 3D in Ubuntu 11.10 running in a VirtualBox VM in OS X. Such a hard time, in fact, that I'm about to give up and conclude that it simply isn't possible to use Ubuntu 3D in a configuration like this. The problem with is that windows simply do not render. I've found that killing Nautilus makes the problem go away, but that's really not much of a solution. I have installed the guest additions and am running the VM with 2048 MB RAM, 128 MB video memory, and have enabled 3D acceleration. I've tried all this on several Macintoshes, with no luck. Unity 2D, on the other hand, works fine across the board. Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.

• Why does my screen blank out for the duration of the Grub boot menu?

  Upon booting, when I should see the GRUB menu, my monitor simply says: "No optimum mode. Recommended mode: 1600*1200". If I wait for a short while, Ubuntu starts to boot and it reaches the desktop. So I guess there is no video signal during that time, there's the grub menu but I cant see it and after the wait time everything is fine. I have the same problem when I log out for a short moment, before the log in screen is reached. and this also happens when i shut down ubuntu. The VGA is an onboard NVIDIA GeForce 7025.

• Multiple network installs with cached downloads

  I tend to do lots of Ubuntu installs, and I'd like them to be up to date from the moment I do them, and not have to install a bazillion updates as soon as the install finishes. I'd also like to cache those packages somewhere on a machine on my LAN, so I don't re-download all the packages every time. How easy is this to achieve? Is there a guide somewhere to making this happen? Bonus points if I don't have to burn any CDs or use USB sticks! Edit: I have noticed a lot of guides for PXE booting and would be tempted to set this up but every time I find one they seem to be old/outdated and broken. My home server runs 10.04 LTS.

• How can I make apt-get wait for another instance to finish?

  Is there any way I can make apt-get wait for the other apt-get (or similar) processes to finish? I know that, generally, apt-get can only one instance at a time and if we try to run apt-get at the same time then we get a message saying that some other process is using it. My question is: how can I make apt-get wait for the other processes to finish and then run? Advantage: No need to type the command apt-get again, it will be automated after the 1st apt-get finishes.

• Is it safe to run multiple XNA ContentManager instances on multiple threads?

  My XNA project currently uses one ContentManager instance, and one dedicated background thread for loading all content. I wonder, would it be safe to have multiple ContentManager instances, each in it's own dedicated thread, loading different content at the same time? I'm prompted to ask this question because this article makes the following statement: If there are two textures created at the same time on different threads, they will clobber the other and you will end up with some garbage in the textures. I think that what the author is saying here, is that if I access one ContentManager simultaneously on two threads, I'll get garbage. But what if I have separate ContentManager instances for each thread? If no-one knows the answer already from experience, I'll go ahead and try it and see what happens.

• Why Does Unity lag Often That I have To Manually Shutdown/Restart my Core i3 Laptop?

  I did a fresh install of Ubuntu then do did some upgrades. After my next restart when I try to open Ubuntu Software Center it took about 20 seconds for the window to load then 10 more seconds before it became click able. While doing some installation of software, Unity lags like hell that every time I click any application it takes a few seconds before I can see it. Even GEdit take a lot of time to load. The worst part was when I was doing nothing to my computer. Even on that part, my computer lags. My Laptop is a Brand New Core i3 with 2GB of RAM. Unity should run perfectly on that kind of machine right? BTW: I reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 for about 5 times now and still nothing changed.

  I wonder, what options do I have in the following situation. In the course of the several projects I realised the need in some auxilary software product (related to testing of the main products). I applied a creative approach to the matter and implemented a system which I think has a potential and looking promising (maybe not on the market but at least among some interested supporters). I have even more ideas related to this system and continue developing at my free and work time. It has become a work and hobby at the same time. Unfortunately, this work basically has nothing in common with the company's business and there is no way this will be organized in a form of standard development process and be presented to costumers as a product. What can you suggest in this situation? How to avoid breaching of contract? Have you had something similar in your career? What if my intention is to develop it as an open source project?

• Failed Vista/Ubuntu 12.04 attempt at dual boot. Can only boot Ubuntu now

  I recently tried installing Ubuntu 12.04 alongside my Windows Vista install. I can boot fine into Ubuntu every time, but now every time I choose to boot into Windows, the process fails completely and restarts (or shuts down) my laptop. Is there anything I can do to recover this. I am very happy with Ubuntu and I do not want to recover my old Vista installation to overwrite it, but I do need to be able to use both OS's. Is it recoverable or should I start from scratch?
