• How to get around LazyInitializationException in scheduled jobs?

  I am working on a J2EE server application which is deployed on Tomcat. I use Spring source as MVC framework and Hibernate as ORM provider. My object model has lot of Lazy relationships (dependent objects are fetched on request). The high level design is like Service level methods call a few DAO methods to perform database operation. The service method is called either from the Flex UI or as a scheduled job. When it is called from Flex UI, the service method works fine i.e. it fetches some objects using DAO methods and even Lazy loading works. This is possible by the use of OpenSessionInViewFilter configured with the UI servlet. But when the same service method is called as scheduled Job, it gives LazyInitializationException. I can not configure OpenSessionInViewFilter because there is no servlet or UI request associated with that. I tried configuring Transaction around the scheduled job method so that service method starts a transaction and all the DAO methods participate in that same transaction, hoping that the transaction will remain active and hibernate session will be available. But it does not work. Please suggest if anyone has ever been able to get such a configuration working. If needed, I can post the Hibernate configuration and log messages. Thanks a lot for help! • Looking for Simplified Overview of EJB3

  Hi I'm looking for a simplified overview of EJB3 components. I seem to understand most of the pieces of the puzzle, but can't quite get them to fit together in my brain as a full picture. I've developed numerous web applications (wars) that have been deployed on Tomcat before, but not a full-fledged EE application (ear). I would like the overview to be as generic as possible. I'm not looking for a tutorial on how to set up EJB3 on Glassfish built in NetBeans or some other vendor specific tutorial that's more about the IDE than the technology. I keep reading about Java, ejb-jar, web and ear modules but am not clear on what these different modules contain and how to use them to put together my app. In my case, I want to write a simple database CRUD web application. The first step is simple; create entity classes that model the database tables my app will be using. I plan on using annotations. Should I create a jar that contains just these enity classes? Is this the ejb-jar module (sometimes referred to as the Java module)? Next, I'll need some business logic classes that make use of the entity classes. These are the session beans (stateless or stateful) correct? Should these be packaged in the same jar as the entity classes or a separate jar? Finally, I'll need some sort of web interface (I'll be creating a JSF portlet) application that makes use of the both the session and entity beans. Together with the above jar(s), this will be my war? Assuming the above to be correct, what is involved in creating an ear? Forgive me if this post is vague, but I'm having a hard time defining what it is I don't understand. Thanks for any help!

• Is there a mechanism to distribute an app with its own JRE?

  Hello all, These fine folks are my users: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4MwTvtyrUQ If you don't want to enjoy the video here is the gist: my users can't tell between a file and a folder, between a browser and a web site. I need to create a Java web app (Tomcat or Jetty) and deploy it in as many of their computers, Windows and Mac. The question is: Is there a mechanism to distribute an app with its own JRE? (in the Tcl world there are starpacks and starkits, in the Python world there's py2exe and others, that's the idea). And also, is it legal? I know the VM is open source but I'm not clear about the libraries, and I know about GNU Classpath but I don't know if all the packages are there. I don't want to depend on the installed JRE or on the user having enough privileges to install one. On the Mac I don't want to depend on Apple (I had to switch from Tiger to Snow Leopard just to have Java 1.6, I can't put my users in that position) Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks! jb

• OSGI, Servlets and JPA hello world / tutorial / example

  I want to build a web application which basically is a restful web-service serving json messages. I would like it to be as simple as possible. I was thinking about using servlets (with annotations). JPA as a database layer is a must - Toplink or Hibernate. Preferably working on Tomcat. I want to have app divided into modules serving different functionality (auth service, customer service, etc..). And I would like to be able to update those modules without reinstalling whole application on the server - like eclipse plugins, user is notified (when he enters webapp's home url) that update is available, clicks it, and app is downloading and installing updated module. I think this functionality can be made with OSGI, but I can't find any example code, or tutorial with simple hello world updatable servlet providing some data from database through jpa. I'm looking for an advice: - Is OSGI the right tool for this or it can be done with something simpler? - Where can I find some examples covering topic (or topics) which I need for this project. - Which OSGI implementation would be best-simplest for this task. *My knowledge of OSGI is basic. I know how bundles are described, I understand concept of OSGI container and what it does. I have never created any OSGI app yet.

• Set request attributes when a Form is POSTed

  Is there any way to set request attributes (not parameters) when a form is posted? The problem I am trying to solve is: I have a JSP page displaying some data in a couple of dropdown lists. When the form is posted, my Controller servlet processes this request (based on the parameters set/specified in the form) and redirects to the same JSP page that is supposed to display addition details. I now want to display the same/earlier data in the dropdown lists without having to recompute or recalculate to get that same data. And in the said JSP page, the dropdown lists in the form are populated by data that is specified through request attributes. Right now, after the Form is POSTed and I am redirected to the same JSP page the dropdown lists are empty because the necessary request attributes are not present. I am quite the n00b when it comes to web apps, so an obvious & easy solution to this problem escapes me at the moment! I am open to suggestions on how to restructure the control flow in the Servlet. Some details about this app: standard Servlet + JSP, JSTL, running in Apache Tomcat 6.0. Thanks.

• Converting WAR to EAR and other Glassfish stories

  Hello! I am really new in this so I hopefully don't make any terrible mistake. I apologize before hand if I have. In my project I was using tomcat and deploying WAR files. But now some bosses wants to deploy EAR files. So there we go. I first downloaded Glassfish (don't know if it's the apropiate application server for a newbie like me), instaled it and all (I even deployed the hello.war in the autodeploy _< ). Then prepared an EAR file. From what I know, I just need to create an Enterprise Application Project in Eclipse and add to the module my war file. This changes the application.xml file automatically (thanks eclipse project!). So I exported it to an EAR file and uploaded it to the glassfish server. Wonders of wonders, it doesn't work. I also tried deploying the old WAR file in this new shiny glassfish but it goes on http-404 not found error. The glassfish seems to say that my project is not in ~/domains/domain1/docroot. By the way I am using windows and I am aware of some problems between glassfish and windows due to some updating open files or such. So I have to questions: First, Am I doing the EAR package correctly? Second, Do I need to do some especial configuration to the glassfish server to deploy EAR and WAR files? Thanks!

• GET is not working for firstResource Rest example

  Hi, I am newbie to rest. I am using the following code example to understand the RESTlet. http://www.restlet.org/documentation/1.1/firstResource I am using RESTClient addon to firefox for testing. When i do GET on http://localhost/rest, i get a response "ok". • download large files using servlet

  I am using Apache Tomcat Server 6 and Java 1.6 and am trying to write large mp3 files to the ServletOutputStream for a user to download. Files are ranging from a 50-750MB at the moment. The smaller files aren't causing too much of a problem but with the larger files it and getting socket exception broken pipe.   So I have a web application on Tomcat, built on top of Struts 1.1. • j_security_check to SSO in different module under Oracle App Server?

  I have an existing j2ee application running on Oracle App Server. It is targeted towards paying customers so the content is secured and a SSO module properly intercepts all requests for secured content. Now the company is adding a unbranded public-facing module with a number of unsecured pages. At one point the user is expected to register for a free account and log in to proceed further. Think doctors adding a public-facing site with information for potential patients, or lawyers adding a public-facing site with information for potential clients. There's some information on the session and the usual approach would be to authenticate the user, persist the session information using the now-known user id, invalidate the existing session (to prevent certain types of attacks), the reload the session information before returning to the user. I can't just persist it under the session id since that's about to change. The glitch is that the existing application already has an SSO module and I get a 404 error every time I try to direct to j_security_check. I've tried that, /sso/j_security_check, even http://localhost/sso/j_security_check, all without success. I noticed that an earlier question said that tomcat requires access to a secured page before j_security_check is even visible. I don't know if that's the case with Oracle AS. Ideas? Or is the best approach to continue arguing that we have a different user base so it would be better to handle authentication in our own module anyway?

• Building a J2EE dev/test setup on a single PC

  It's been a while since I did Java work, and even then I was never responsible for starting a large project from the very start... there were test/staging/production systems already running, etc, etc. Now I am looking to start a J2EE project from scratch on my trusty workstation, which has never been used for Java development and runs Windows 7 64bit. First of all, I'll be getting Eclipse. As far as writing the code goes I'm pretty happy. And running it through Eclipse is OK, but what I'd really want is to have a VM running MySQL and TomCat on which I can properly deploy my project and run/debug it 'remotely' from my dev PC. And I guess this should be done using Ant instead of letting Eclipse build the WAR for me, so that I don't end up with a dependence on Eclipse. I'm certain Eclipse can do this, so you hit a button and it runs Ant scripts, deploys and debugs for instance, but very hazy on it. Are there any good guides on this? I don't want to be taught Java, or even Ant, but rather the 'glue' parts like getting my test VM up and running under Windows, getting a build/test/deploy/run pipeline running through Eclipse, etc. One point, I only plan to use Windows... hosting a Windows VM on my Windwos desktop. And while I can use command-line tools like ant/svn, I'm much more a GUI person who loves IDE integration... I'd rather this didn't end up an argument about Linux or Vi, etc! I am looking for free, but am a MAPS subscriber, and run Win7 Ultimate in case that makes a difference as far as free VM solutions.

• Why would JSP tags appear in HTML source code?

  I'm a front-end web developer at a company using Java on their server. As a front-end developer, I'm concerned with the HTML structure that the server produces, but I don't have control over anything our back-end team produces. Rather than ask someone on that team, I would like to gather knowledge from the Stackoverflow community so I can communicate intelligently with the back-end team. So, I am curious as to what would cause certain JSP tags to appear in the rendered HTML that is sent to the browser. We have tags in our HTML source such as: <flow:fileRef id="vfileColor" fileId="vfile.color"/> <flow:fileRef id="StyleDir" fileId="StyleDir"/> <flow:fileRef id="vfileStylesheet" fileId="vfile.stylesheet"/> I am more interested in knowing why these appear, not as much about what they do. Is there a server setting for Tomcat/Apache/etc. that would hide these tags from the browser? Any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

• make java plugin use the browser certificates

  We have a java applet that communicates with a spring application running on tomcat and using spring's http invoker. We want to secure the applet using ssl with client authentication, we have a jsp page for login, after successful login the applet loads. The jsp page is secured with ssl, when the applet loads the http invoker inside the applet is doing a second handshake apparently not related to the browser handshake, OK, I don't mind that, but I want the java plugin to use browser certificates and client certificates but its not, I have to load the client certificate to the java plugin also using the java ControlPanel, and if my server's certificate is self signed then I have to load the server certificate also to the java ControlPanel and to the nrowser. Another thing is when the applet starts loading the java plugin pops a dialog asking for the client keystore password, I would like to avoid that. So to conclude: I would like the java plugin to use the browser's trusted certificates and client certificates, and to avoid the keystore password dialog that pops up. I have googled for it for two days and can't find any clue of how to accomplish that. I will appreciate any help. I'm using jdk 1.6.0 u23 and firefox 3.6.13.

• How to handle exceptions from an image-generating Servlet?

  I have a simple (Servlet, JSP, and JSTL) web app whose main functionality is displaying images retrieved from a back-end server. The controller servlet forwards the user to a JSP that in turn uses another Servlet to display the resulting image on that same JSP. Further down, the JSP has a line similar to: <a href="<c:out value='${imageURL}'/>"><img src="<c:out value='${imageURL}'/>" alt="image view" border="1"></a> which invokes a GET request on the image-generating servlet causing it to generate the image. My question is: how do I handle Exceptions thrown by this image-generating servlet? I already have an error page defined (in web.xml) to handle ServletException within my web app but this doesn't work for this image-generating Servlet, and results in the following errors showing up in my Tomcat server logs: SEVERE: Exception Processing ErrorPage[exceptionType=javax.servlet.ServletException, location=/WEB-INF/ExceptionPage.jsp] java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot reset buffer after response has been committed What's my recourse in this situation? I'd like to be able to handle Exceptions thrown from this image-generating Servlet, and display some error on the main UI or forward the user to another error page.

• Hibernate 1:M relationship ,row order, constant values table and concurrency

  table A and B need to have 1:M relationship a and b are added during application runtime, so A created, then say 4 B's created. Each B instance has to come in order, so that I could later extract them in the same order as I added them. The app will be a web-app running on Tomcat, so 10 instances may work simultaneously. So my question are: 1) How to preserve inserting order, so that I could extract B instances that A references in the same order as I persisted them. That's tricky, because we add to a Collection and then it gets saved (am I right?). So, it depends on how Hibernate saves it, what if it changes the order in what we added instances? I've seen something like LIST instead of SET when describing relationships, is that what I need? 2) How to add a 3-rd column to B so that I could differentiate the instances, something like SEX(M,F,U) in B table. Do I need a special table, or there's and easy way to describe constants in Hibernate. What do you recommend? 3) Talking about concurrency, what methods do you recommend to use? There should be no collisions in the db and as you see, there might easily be some if rows are not inserted (PK added) right where it is invoked without delays ?

• PHP site scheduling Java execution?

  I'm trying to get started on combining my (slightly limited) PHP experience with my (better) Java experience, in a project where I need to allow uploads of Java source files to the server, which the server then executes Javac on to compile it. Then, at a set time (e.g. specified on upload) I need to run that once on the server, which will generate some database info for the PHP site to display. To describe my current programming abilities- I have made many desktop Java programs, and am confident in 'pure' Java, but so far have only undertaken a couple of PHP projects (including using the CodeIgniter framework). My motivation for using PHP as the frontend is because I know it is very fast, lightweight and I will be able to display the results I need very easily with it (simple DB readout). Ideally, the technology used should be able to be developed on a localhost (e.g. WAMP, Tomcat etc..) Is there any advice which you could give on what technology I should consider to use to bridge this gap, and what resources could help in using that technology? I have looked at a few, but have struggled to find documentation helping in achieving what I need.

• Infrastructure for high transactional system (language & hosting suggestion help)

  Some of our friends (University students) are trying to develop a twitter type application, I want to plan for at least 1000 transactions per second (I know it's wishful thinking) for initial launch. This involves several people connecting and getting updates and posting (text + images) to site. In the back end db will server the data and also calculates rankings of what to push to user based on complex algorithm on the fly real-time. Our group is familiar with Java and Tomcat/MySQL. We can also easily learn/code in PHP/MySQL. What is the best suited platform for our purpose ? Though Java seem to be easy to implement for us I am afraid that hosting will be a bit difficult. I could find cloud based php hosting services (like rackspace cloudsites) at reasonable cost. Amazon EC2 is a bit over our heads to manage on day-to-day. Also any recommendation on hosting ? (PHP or Java) We don't have millions in seed money but about $20K to start with. Any advice on above or any thing in general approach is much appreciated.

• Quick guide to Oracle IRM 11g: Server configuration

  Quick guide to Oracle IRM 11g index Welcome to the second article in this quick quide to Oracle IRM 11g. Hopefully you've just finished the first article which takes you through deploying the software onto a Linux server. This article walks you through the configuration of this new service and contains a subset of information from the official documentation and is focused on installing the server on Oracle Enterprise Linux. If you are planning to deploy on a non-Linux platform, you will need to reference the documentation for platform specific information. Contents Introduction Create IRM WebLogic Domain Starting the Admin Server and initial configuration Introduction In the previous article the database was prepared, the WebLogic Application Server installed and the files required for an IRM server installed. But we don't actually have a configured system yet. We need to now create a WebLogic Domain in which the IRM server will run, then configure some of the settings and crypography so that we can create a context and be ready to seal some content and test it all works. This article doesn't cover the configuration of SSL communication from client to server. This is quite a big topic and a separate article has been dedicated for this area. In these articles I also use the hostname, irm.company.internal to reference the IRM server and later on use the hostname irm.company.com in reference to the public facing service. Create IRM WebLogic Domain First step is creating the WebLogic domain, in a console switch to the newly created IRM installation folder as shown below and we will run the domain configuration wizard. [oracle@irm /]$ cd /oracle/middleware/Oracle_IRM/common/bin [oracle@irm bin]$ ./config.sh First thing the wizard will ask is if you wish to create a new or extend an existing domain. This guide is creating a standalone system so you should select to create a new domain. Next step is to choose what technologies from the Oracle ECM Suite you wish this domain to host. You are only interested in selecting the option "Oracle Information Rights Management". When you select this check box you will notice that it also selects "Oracle Enterprise Manager" and "Oracle JRF" as these are dependencies of the IRM server. You then need to specify where you wish to place the domain files. I usually just change the domain name from base_domain or irm_domain and leave the others with their defaults. Now the domain will have a single user initially and by default this user is called "weblogic". I usually change this account name to "sysadmin" or "administrator", but in this guide lets just accept the default. With respects to the next dialog, again for eval or dev reasons, leave the server startup mode as development. The JDK should also be automatically detected. We now need to provide details of the database. This guide is using the Oracle 11gR2 database and the settings I used can be seen in the image to the right. There is a lot of configuration that can now be done for the admin server, any managed servers and where the deployments reside. In this guide I am leaving all of these to their defaults so do not check any of the boxes. However I will on this blog be detailing later how you can go back and setup things such as automated startup of an IRM server which require changes to these default settings. But for now, lets leave it all alone and just click next. Now we are ready to install. Note that from this dialog you can scroll the left window and see there are going to be two servers created from the defaults. The AdminServer which is where you modify settings for the WebLogic Server and also hosts the Oracle Enterprise Manager for IRM which allows to monitor the IRM service performance and also make service related settings (which we shortly do below) and the IRM_server1 which hosts the actual IRM services themselves. So go right ahead and hit create, the process is pretty quick and usually under 10 minutes. When the domain creation ends, it will give you the URL to the admin server. It's worth noting this down and the URL is usually; http://irm.company.internal:7001 Starting the Admin Server and initial configuration First thing to do is to start the WebLogic Admin server and review the initial IRM server settings. In this guide we are going to run the Admin server and IRM server in console windows, in another article I will discuss running these as background services. So for now, start a console and run the Admin server by doing the following. cd /oracle/middleware/user_projects/domains/irm_domain/ ./startWebLogic.sh Wait for the server to start, you are looking for the following line to be reported in the console window. <BEA-00360><Server started in RUNNING mode> First step is configuring the IRM service via Enterprise Manager. Now that the Admin server is running you can point a browser at http://irm.company.internal:7001/em. Login with the username and password you supplied when you created the domain. In Enterprise Manager the IRM service administrator is able to make server wide configuration. However finding where to access the pages with these settings can be a bit of a challenge. After logging in on the left you'll see a tree containing elements of the Enterprise Manager farm Farm_irm_domain. Open up Content Management, then Information Rights Management and finally select the IRM node. On the right then select the IRM menu item, navigate to the Administration section and now we have four options, for now, we are just going to look at General Settings. The image on the right proves that a picture is worth a thousand words (or 113 in this case). The General Settings page allows you to set the cryptographic algorithms used for protecting sealed content. Unless you have a burning need to increase the key lengths or you need to comply to a regulation or government mandate, AES192 is a good start. You can change this later on without worry. The most important setting here we need to make is the Server URL. In this blog article I go over why this URL is so important, basically every single piece of content you protect with Oracle IRM is going to have this URL embedded in it, so if it's wrong or unresolvable, then nobody can open the secured documents. Note that in our environment we have yet to do any SSL configuration of the service. If you intend to build a server without SSL, then use http as the protocol instead of https. But I would recommend using SSL and setting this up is described in the next article. I would also probably up the device count from 1 to 3. This means that any user can retrieve rights to access content onto 3 computers at any one time. The default of 1 doesn't really make sense in development, evaluation nor even production environments and my experience is that 3 is a better number. Next step is to create the keystore for the IRM server. When a classification (called a context) is created, Oracle IRM generates a unique set of symmetric keys which are used to secure the content itself. These keys are then encrypted with a set of "wrapper" asymmetric cryptography keys which are stored externally to the server either in a Java Key Store or a HSM. These keys need to be generated and the following shows my commands and the resulting output. I have greyed out the responses from the commands so you can see the input a little easier. The reason we store it here is this folder would be backed up as part of a domain backup. As with any cryptographic technology, DO NOT LOSE THESE KEYS OR THIS KEY STORE. Once you've sealed content against a context, the keys will be wrapped with these keys, lose these keys, and you can't get access to any secured content, pretty important.
