  • Does one's choice of 3d modeling software used during asset creation affect performance at runtime?

    - by user134143
Does software used to create 3d assets (for game development specifically) have an impact on the efficiency of the program? In other words, is it possible to reduce the operating footprint of an application merely by utilizing alternative development software during production of 3d assets? If you use two different applications to create a 3-dimensional image of a box, can one of them result in better performance if aspects of the image are identical? I am attempting to get the information I need without causing unnecessary debate over specific software choice.

  • Weird graphical issues with Gnome Shell in 12.10

    - by Chintan Parikh
I finally got Gnome Shell working on Ubuntu 12.10, but there are some weird graphical issues. It seems as if the text is corrupted or something. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about: http://i.imgur.com/OqGyl.png It happens on a bunch of different applications, but not when I'm using Ubuntu. Does anyone know why or how to fix it? My graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 6540G2, and I'm using the open source drivers (fglrx doesn't work with 12.10 yet).

  • Java GNOME bindings, are those a good idea?

    - by Phobia
What do you think of Java's GNOME bindings and I was surprised to know that the latest version of the bindings was released this month and they're backed by a company that uses them, which means that there's a considerable amount of activity in the project, and that it's not going to be ditched anytime soon Is this going to be a second chance for Java on the desktop, since GTK+ is cross platform like swing, but less bloated and more responsive Should I be learning how to develop applications using it? or it's not worth the time?

  • In Technology, Ignorance is NOT Bliss

    - by Tanu Sood
Author: Debra Lilley, ACE Director, UK Proof I’m not technical -  I’ve just finished a Latin America tour with OTN and a funny thing happened that I want to share with you; because it is quite a good analogy for how many of us use technology today and you know how I love analogies. In Costa Rica we had a really long journey up through the mountains to where our conference was to be. The road was windy and narrow and once it got dark there was no scenery to see, boredom set in. At one stage I looked at my watch to see the time, but in the dark I couldn’t make it out, so I thought I would be clever and use the torch in my smartphone! Even though as soon as I switched on the phone it showed the time, I ignored it and used the torch to read my watch. That’s us when we pay maintenance on software, ask for enhancements, and either chose not to upgrade or as I have seen so many times, upgrade but don’t use the new features. I know there are always other factors not least the upgrade costs themselves but in the later releases of all the Oracle family of applications Oracle have done a lot to make the interoperability of them with Oracle Fusion Middleware more successful and in many cases for the first time. My heritage is Oracle E Business Suite (EBS) and the availability of Oracle Weblogic for EBS is fantastic for an Oracle powered organisation that can move away from supporting multiple flavours of application server. The same release made available  - the no downtime patching that Oracle Database 11g introduced with Edition Based Redefinition. I am not saying you must use these features but you must be aware of what each release of your application brings and make a business based decision as to whether it is for you or not. I like to have a simple spreadsheet of features with no-value, nice-to-have, must-have ratings, but make the spreadsheet cumulative so that when you do upgrade you have all the features listed you previously didn’t take up. That way you can avoid the ‘using your phone to read your watch’ scenario. About the Author: Debra Lilley, Fusion Champion, UKOUG Board Member, Fusion User Experience Advocate and ACE Director. Lilley has 18 years experience with Oracle Applications, with E Business Suite since 9.4.1, moving to Business Intelligence Team Lead and Oracle Alliance Director. She has spoken at over 100 conferences worldwide and posts at debrasoraclethoughts

  • What's about Java?

    - by Silviu Turuga
What is Java? In very short words, Java is a programming language that let you make an application that can be run on different operating systems, no matter we are talking about Windows, Mac OS, Linux or even embedded devices, such as RaspberryPi. When you compile a Java program, instead of getting a binary output as you get on other programming languages, you'll get a Java intermediate code, called Java bytecode. This is interpreted at run time, by a virtual machine that is specifically for the hardware and operating system you are using. What Java do i need? There are 5 major versions of Java: Java SE(Standard Edition) - this is what I'll use on most of my tutorials. Most of the examples will run on Java 6, but for others you'll need Java 7. Java EE (Enterprise Edition) - used for enterprise development Java ME (Micro Edition) - for running Java on mobile and different embedded devices such as PDAs, TV set-top boxes, printers, etc. Java Embedded - for some embedded devices such as Raspberry Pi, where the resources are limited JavaFX - to develop rich content User Interfaces. This is also something that will use a lot. More detailed information can be found on Oracle's website If you just want to run java applications you'll need the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) installed. If you want to program and create new applications, then you'll need the JDK (Java Development Kit).  How to check if Java is already installed? From command line, if you are on Windows, or from Terminal on Mac enter the following: java -version You should get something like this, if you have java installed on your system: java version "1.6.0_37" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode) Note: your current Java version might be different from mine. More information https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/whatis_java.xml http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_(programming_language) Next steps Install Java SDK Chose an IDE. I recommend NetBeans as it is very easy to use and also let you quickly create the GUI of your application Alternatives are Eclipse, Komodo Edit (for Mac), etc. There are plenty of solutions both free or paid. • An Introduction to ASP.NET MVC Extensibility

Because ASP.NET MVC has been designed with extensibility as its design principle; almost every logical step of the processing pipeline can be replaced with your own implementation. In fact, the best way to develop applications with ASP.NET MVC is to extend the system, Simone starts a series that explains how to implement extensions to ASP.NET MVC, starting with the ones at the beginning of the pipeline (routing extensions) and finishing with the view extensions points.

  • How do I replicate the Super Key?

    - by joemangrove
If you use xmonad, xbindkeys, and xdotool to try and remap the 'Menu' key, it does not work perfectly. The 'Menu' key will only emulate the Super key's quick press action, bringing up the application search. If you hold in the 'Menu' key it will not emulate the Super key's hold down action. That is, bring up the launcer with numbers over the applications. How do you make another key on the keyboard act exactly like the Super key?

  • My application quicklist goes missing when using "quickly submitubuntu"

    - by Kazade
I'm trying to submit my app for the app showdown, but I've just noticed that when I use the "submitubuntu" Quickly command, my dynamic quicklist entries don't work. I think this is because the desktop file gets renamed from tickit.desktop to extras-tickit.desktop I'm coding a hacky fix to look for /usr/share/applications/extras-tickit.desktop and changing the argument for get_for_desktop_id() if it exists, but is there a better way? Can I stop Quickly renaming the desktop file?

  • What is the actual problem with a prototype based design?

    - by WindScar
I feel like anything that can be developed using OO/functional languages can be generally made 'better' using a prototype based language, because they appaer to have the best of them all: high order functions, flexibility to simulate any OO structure, productivity (low verbosity) and scalability because of concurrency. But it seems like they are avoided for the creation of executable applications and of bigger projects in general. Why that?

  • Just what SQL Azure needed? A compelling business feature–Reporting

    - by GavinPayneUK
Those of us who let ourselves be the target of Microsoft’s marketing will be very aware that SQL Azure has been around for a year now and that a (very) small number of people are using it for their cloud based apps and a few more as a development test bed. In summary, the reason for this is because what we’ve yet to see for SQL Azure is: mass adoption by developers therefore taking the service into production it become a default deployment option for commercial shrink wrapped applications a list...(read more)
