• Web Content Filtering for Windows Clients

  I'm working with a small business to solve a bunch of problems. One is their Windows 7 POS registers need to have web access restricted to only three remote support sites, but the back office machine needs an unfiltered connection. I'd like something I can install and configure on the few registers to block all but those few sites. In a perfect world this would restrict the normal register user, but the admin user would not be filtered. Free is best, if it works, but a small fee would be alright too. Microsoft's Family Safety filter is close, but requires a Windows Live account, which isn't ideal, but may be alright. Anyone use this in a small business environment? I'd prefer something easily managed at the local machines. K9 Web Protection is interesting and I'm going to look into it more. Are there other options? Seems like someone would have made something simple like this as an open source project, but maybe not.

• Manage Large E-Book Archive

  I have a very large e-book archive (approx. 1TB) including various file formats eg. PDF, DJVU, MOBI and EPUB. I put them in different folders by subject eg. Engineering, Programming etc. But after many years, things are going crazy. The programming folder itself is 220GB and file names are cryptic. Some filenames are well defined like: 236659889_Final_Report_of_2012_Climate_Change_Conference.pdf but some filenames are just ISBN numbers or just download.pdf. I need an application for organizing and searching my e-books. I already tried Calibre, Mendeley and Debenu. But all these apps try to import files first and I dont have any spare 1+ TB for the apps import folder. Is there any good Windows application for just indexing filenames and contents of ebooks without importing them?

• Linux periodically "losing" ability to connect to server via SSH?

  I know this isn't exactly a programming question, but it popped up in my use of git for programming projects at least. I've got a web server that I use to host my git repos on, but my ubuntu box seems to "lose" the ability to connect to it via SSH. I'll get a "connection refused" error when I try to ssh or use git. Rebooting my local machine will fix the problem, but only temporarily. I can still connect to the web interface just fine, and the problem manifests with other servers as well. I've been working around it by pulling my changes over to my laptop and pushing from there, but that's sub-optimal as you can imagine. Has anyone seen something like this? I'd be tempted to say it's some kind of IP caching problem, but I can't connect even using the IP address of the server directly... Running Ubuntu 9.04

• How would you rewrite/refactor this ?

  Old application that is used by 50-60.000 paying customers. Company is several hundred people big. Application has a lot of business critical code (30% of all code) written in classic asp. Application has a lot more .net code. Application has a COM+ bridge for enabling asp to "talk" to .net Organization lacks some/a lot knowledge on what is causing the 10-20% server-reset per day (might be due to COM+ ?) There is no red line through the application; no architecture, no real patterns etc. The application has been like this for at least 5 years. The asp code base is increasing, slowly but certainly. I have read refactoring stories and I have knowledge on why you some of the times should not re-write a system. I would love for the old asp code to vanish as well as the COM+ component. But the pain is that no one really knows what is going on inside the asp classic code and the attitude inside all the teams are "this is just how it is". Down the line, this causes a lot of other issues like recruiting, dev effeciency, business needs that cannot be met, scale etc. With these little facts, does that justify a re-write of the asp code and the removal of the COM+ component ? How would you go about it ?

  Enums in dot net programming is a great facility and we all used it to increase code readability. In earlier version of .NET framework we don’t have any method anything that will check whether a value is assigned to it or not. In C# 4.0 we have new static method called HasFlag which will check that particular value is assigned or not. Let’s take an example for that. First I have created a enum called PaymentType which could have two values Credit Card or Debit Card. • DevDays ‘00 The Netherlands day #1

  First day of DevDays 2010, I was looking forward to DevDays to see all the new things like VS2010, .NET4.0, MVC2. The lineup for this year is again better than the year before, there are 100+ session of all kind of topics like Cloud, Database, Mobile, SharePoint, User experience, Visual Studio, Web. The first session of the day was a keynote by Anders Hejlsberg he talked about the history and future of programming languages. He gave his view about trends and influences in programming languages today and in the future. The second talk that i followed was from the famous Scott Hanselman, he talked about the basics of ASP.NET MVC 2, although it was a 300 level session, it was more like a level 100 session, but it was mentioned by Scott at the beginning. Although it was interesting to see all the basic things about MVC like the controllers, actions, routes, views, models etc. After the lunch the third talk for me was about moving ASP.NET webform applications to MVC from Fritz Onion. In this session he changed an example webform application part by part to a MVC application. He gave some interesting tips and tricks and showed how to solve some issues that occur while converting. Next and the fourth talk was about the difference between LINQ to SQL and  the ADO.NET  Entity Framework from Kurt Claeys. He gave a good understanding about this two options, the demos where in LINQ to SQL and the Entity Framework, the goal was to get a good understanding when and where to use both options. The last talk about this day was also from Scott Hanselman, he goes deeper into the features of ASP.NET MVC 2 and gave some interesting tips, the ninja black belt tips. He gave some tips about the tooling, the new MVC 2 html helper methods, other view engines (like NHaml, spark),T4 templating. With this tips we can be more productive and create web applications better and faster. It was a long and interesting day, I am looking forward to day #2.

• TDE Tablespace Encryption 11.2.0.1 Certified with EBS 12

  Oracle Advanced Security is an optional licenced Oracle 11g Database add-on.  Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) offers two different features:  column encryption and tablespace encryption.  11.2.0.1 TDE Column encryption was certified with E-Business Suite 12 as part of our overall 11.2.0.1 database certification.  As of today, 11.2.0.1 TDE Tablespace encryption is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12. What is Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) ? Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) allows you to protect data at rest. TDE helps address privacy and PCI requirements by encrypting personally identifiable information (PII) such as Social Security numbers and credit card numbers. TDE is completely transparent to existing applications with no triggers, views or other application changes required. Data is transparently encrypted when written to disk and transparently decrypted after an application user has successfully authenticated and passed all authorization checks. Authorization checks include verifying the user has the necessary select and update privileges on the application table and checking Database Vault, Label Security and Virtual Private Database enforcement policies.

• Super Computer Built from Raspberry Pi Boards and LEGO Bricks

  It was only a matter of time before someone chained together dozens of Raspberry Pi boards into a serviceable super computer; read on to see how a team of Southampton scientists built a 64-core machine using them. From the University of South Hampton press release: Professor Cox comments: “As soon as we were able to source sufficient Raspberry Pi computers we wanted to see if it was possible to link them together into a supercomputer. We installed and built all of the necessary software on the Pi starting from a standard Debian Wheezy system image and we have published a guide so you can build your own supercomputer.” The racking was built using Lego with a design developed by Simon and James, who has also been testing the Raspberry Pi by programming it using free computer programming software Python and Scratch over the summer. The machine, named “Iridis-Pi” after the University’s Iridis supercomputer, runs off a single 13 Amp mains socket and uses MPI (Message Passing Interface) to communicate between nodes using Ethernet. The whole system cost under £2,500 (excluding switches) and has a total of 64 processors and 1Tb of memory (16Gb SD cards for each Raspberry Pi). Professor Cox uses the free plug-in ‘Python Tools for Visual Studio’ to develop code for the Raspberry Pi.   The latest series of ArchBeat podcast programs grew out of another virtual meet-up, held on March 11. As with previous meet-ups, I sent out a general invitation to the roster of previous ArchBeat panelists to join me on Skype to talk about whatever topic comes up. For this event, Oracle ACE Directors Mike van Alst and Jordan Braunstein  showed up, along with Oracle product manager Jeff Davies.  The result was an impressive and wide-ranging discussion on the evolution of Enterprise Architecture, the role of technology in EA, the impact of social computing, and challenge of having three generations of IT people at work in the enterprise – each with different perspectives on technology. Mike, Jordan, and Jeff talked for more than an hour, and the conversation was so good that slicing and dicing it to meet the time constraints for these podcasts has been a challenge. • Visual Basic 2010 Language Enhancements

  Earlier this month Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010, the .NET Framework 4.0 (which includes ASP.NET 4.0), and new versions of their core programming languages: C# 4.0 and Visual Basic 10 (also referred to as Visual Basic 2010). Previously, the C# and Visual Basic programming languages were managed by two separate teams within Microsoft, which helps explain why features found in one language was not necessarily found in the other. For example, C# 3.0 introduced collection initializers, which enable developers to define the contents of a collection when declaring it; however, Visual Basic 9 did not support collection initializers. Conversely, Visual Basic has long supported optional parameters in methods, whereas C# did not. Recently, Microsoft merged the Visual Basic and C# teams to help ensure that C# and Visual Basic grow together. As explained by Microsoft program manager Jonathan Aneja, "The intent is to make the languages advance together. When major functionality is introduced in one language, it should appear in the other as well. ... [T]hat any task you can do in one language should be as simple in the other." To this end, with version 4.0 C# now supports optional parameters and named arguments, two features that have long been part of Visual Basic's vernacular. • We Don’t Need No Regions

  If your code reaches a level where you want to hide it behind regions then you have a problem that regions won’t solve. Regions are good to hide things that you don’t want to have knowledge about such as auto-generated code. Normally, when you’re developing you end up reading more code than you write it so why would you want to complicate the reading process. I, for one, would love to have that one discussion around regions where someone convinces me that they solve a problem that has no other alternative solution, but I’m still waiting. The most frequent argument I hear about regions is that they allow you to structure your code, but why don’t just structure it using classes, methods and all that other stuff that OOP is about because at the end of the day, you should be doing object oriented programming and not region oriented programming. Having said that, I do believe that sometimes is helpful to have a quick overview of a code file contents and Visual Studio allows you to do just that through the Collapse to Definitions command (CTRL + M, CTRL + O) which collapses the members of all types; if you like regions, you should try this, it is much more useful to read all the members of a type than all the regions inside a type.

• DirectCompute

  In my previous blog post I introduced the concept of GPGPU ending with:On Windows, there is already a cross-GPU-vendor way of programming GPUs and that is the Direct X API. Specifically, on Windows Vista and Windows 7, the DirectX 11 API offers a dedicated subset of the API for GPGPU programming: DirectCompute. You use this API on the CPU side, to set up and execute the kernels on the GPU. The kernels are written in a language called HLSL (High Level Shader Language). You can use DirectCompute with HLSL to write a "compute shader", which is the term DirectX uses for what I've been referring to in this post as "kernel".In this post I want to share some links to get you started with DirectCompute and HLSL.1. • Oracle's Primavera P6 Analytics Now Available!

  Oracle's Primavera product team has announced this week that general availability of our first Oracle BI (OBI) based analytical product with pre-built business intelligence dashboards, reports and KPIs built in. P6 Analytics uses OBI's drill-down capabilities, summarizations, hierarchies and other BI features to provide knowledge to your business users to make the best decisions on portfolios, projects, schedules & resources with deep insights. Without needing to launch into the P6 tool, your executives, PMO, project sponsors, etc. can view up to date project performance information as well as historic trends of project performance. Using web-based portal technology, P6 Analytics makes it easy to manage by exception and then drill down to quickly identify root cause analysis of problem projects. At the same time, a brand new version of the P6 Reporting Database R2 was just announded and is also now available. This updated reporting database provides you with 4 star schemas with spread data and includes P6 activity, project and resource codes. You can use the data warehouse and ETL functions of the P6 Reporting Database R2 with your own reporting tools or build dashboards that utilize the hierarchies & drill down to the day-level on scheduled activities using Busines Objects, Cognos, Microsoft, etc. Both of these products can be downloaded from E-Delivery under the Primavera applications section in the P6 EPPM v7.0 media pack.
