• Core Animation performance on iphone

  I'm trying to do some animations using Core Animation on the iphone. I'm using CABasicAnimation on CALayer. It's a straight forward animation from a random place at the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen at random speed, I have 30 elements that doing the same animation continuously until another action happens. But the performance on the iPhone 3G is very sluggish when the animations start. The image is only 8k. Is this the right approach? • What are the most time consuming checks performed by .NET when executing a managed appplication?

  I've developed a .NET based Windows service that uses part managed (C#) and unmanaged code (C/C++ libraries). In some domain environments (e.g. Win 2k3 32bit server inside domain abc.com) sometimes the service takes more than 30 seconds to start (especially on OS restart), thus failing to start the service. I suspect that it has something to do with enterprise level security but I do not know for sure. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa720255%28VS.71%29.aspx I've tried the following without success: - delay loading references by moving the using directives as far as possible from the servicebase implementation (especially the xml namespace - know to cause delays in loading) - delay loading and configuring log4net - precompiling the code by using ngen - delaying the start of the worker thread - add/remove manifest + decencies set inside - sign/unsign the binaries - use the configuration settings (there are a lot of settings and the scope level for all is set to application ) as later as possible - add all dependencies to GAC I didn't tried yet to add security demands for the class that has the Main method implemented. I didn't tries to implement my own configuration loader because after inspecting the autogenerated code, I've noticed that the setting class is a singletone and it gets its instance on call. By completely removing the log4net dependency it worked, but this is not an option. When the network card is disabled the service starts immediately. Any suggestions/comments/solution you have would be most welcomed.

• Please help with iPhone Memory & Images, memory usage crashing app

  I have an issue with memory usage relating to images and I've searched the docs and watched the videos from cs193p and the iphone dev site on memory mgmt and performance. I've searched online and posted on forums, but I still can't figure it out. The app uses core data and simply lets the user associate text with a picture and stores the list of items in a table view that lets you add and delete items. Clicking on a row shows the image and related text. that's it. Everything runs fine on the simulator and on the device as well. I ran the analyzer and it looked good, so i then starting looking at performance. I ran leaks and everything looked good. My issue is when running Object Allocations as every time i select a row and the view with the image is shown, the live bytes jumps up a few MB and never goes down and my app eventually crashes due to memory usage. Sorting the live bytes column, i see 2 2.72MB mallocs (5.45Mb total), 14 CFDatas (3.58MB total), 1 2.74MB malloc and everything else is real small. the problem is all the related info in instruments is really technical and all the problem solving examples i've seen are just missing a release and nothing complicated. Instruments shows Core Data as the responsible library for all but one (libsqlite3.dylib the other) with [NSSQLCore _prepareResultsFromResultSet:usingFetchPlan:withMatchingRows:] as the caller for all but one (fetchResultSetReallocCurrentRow the other) and im just not sure how to track down what the problem is. i've looked at the stack traces and opened the last instance of my code and found 2 culprits (below). • Countdown timer using NSTimer in "0:00" format

  I have been researching for days on how to do this and nobody has an answer. I am creating an app with 5 timers on the same view. I need to create a timer that counts down from "15:00" (minutes and seconds), and, another that counts down from "2:58" (minutes and seconds). The 15 minute timer should not repeat, but it should stop all other timers when it reaches "00:00." The "2:58" timer should repeat until the "15:00" or "Game Clock" reaches 0. Right now, I have scrapped almost all of my code and I'm working on the "2:58" repeating timer, or "rocketTimer." Does anyone know how to do this? • Crash in OS X Core Data Utility Tutorial

  I'm trying to follow Apple's Core Data utility Tutorial. It was all going nicely, until... The tutorial uses a custom sub-class of NSManagedObject, called 'Run'. Run.h looks like this: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> #import <CoreData/CoreData.h> @interface Run : NSManagedObject { NSInteger processID; } @property (retain) NSDate *date; @property (retain) NSDate *primitiveDate; @property NSInteger processID; @end Now, in Run.m we have an accessor method for the processID variable: - (void)setProcessID:(int)newProcessID { [self willChangeValueForKey:@"processID"]; processID = newProcessID; [self didChangeValueForKey:@"processID"]; } In main.m, we use functions to set up a managed object model and context, instantiate an entity called run, and add it to the context. We then get the current NSprocessInfo, in preparation for setting the processID of the run object. NSManagedObjectContext *moc = managedObjectContext(); NSEntityDescription *runEntity = [[mom entitiesByName] objectForKey:@"Run"]; Run *run = [[Run alloc] initWithEntity:runEntity insertIntoManagedObjectContext:moc]; NSProcessInfo *processInfo = [NSProcessInfo processInfo]; Next, we try to call the accessor method defined in Run.m to set the value of processID: [run setProcessID:[processInfo processIdentifier]]; And that's where it's crashing. The object run seems to exist (I can see it in the debugger), so I don't think I'm messaging nil; on the other hand, it doesn't look like the setProcessID: message is actually being received. I'm obviously still learning this stuff (that's what tutorials are for, right?), and I'm probably doing something really stupid. However, any help or suggestions would be gratefully received! ===MORE INFORMATION=== Following up on Jeremy's suggestions: The processID attribute in the model is set up like this: NSAttributeDescription *idAttribute = [[NSAttributeDescription alloc]init]; [idAttribute setName:@"processID"]; [idAttribute setAttributeType:NSInteger32AttributeType]; [idAttribute setOptional:NO]; [idAttribute setDefaultValue:[NSNumber numberWithInteger:-1]]; which seems a little odd; we are defining it as a scalar type, and then giving it an NSNumber object as its default value. In the associated class, Run, processID is defined as an NSInteger. Still, this should be OK - it's all copied directly from the tutorial. It seems to me that the problem is probably in there somewhere. By the way, the getter method for processID is defined like this: - (int)processID { [self willAccessValueForKey:@"processID"]; NSInteger pid = processID; [self didAccessValueForKey:@"processID"]; return pid; } and this method works fine; it accesses and unpacks the default int value of processID (-1). • View doesn't respond to touches after shake

  In my app I've implemented a shake event and it shows a UIImageView. When the UIImageView is shown, I hide the Nav Bar with: [self.navigationController setNavigationBarHidden:YES animated:NO]; And after that I want to bring it back when user touches the screen: - (void)touchesEnded:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { [[self navigationController] setNavigationBarHidden:NO animated:YES]; } But it doesn't work! Like my view doesn't respond to touches. Thanks in advance!

• What is auto-mounting my media volume?

  Something is repeatedly mounting my "media" share, doing something with it, then quietly un-mounting it with no notifications at the user level. from the little I can gleaned from the console messages below, I thought I'd managed to stop it, if not understand it last night when I followed instructions for deleting all traces of the Google Update Daemon. I've not been using any Google apps whatsoever, so I was surprised to see that in Console. What's more surprising, and perhaps a little distressing, is that the same thing occurred this evening, when the Google Daemon is long gone. I don't have that log because I can't recall precisely what time it occurred. I'll do a search and provide it if you wish, though. In the meantime, any help with this would be extremely appreciated. I've asked over at Apple Discussions but I think it might be a little deeper than those manning the boards this weekend are comfortable with. It's certainly beyond my meager skills.   I have a strange case, here's the sequence of actions: User edits a document and hits save Application sends GET request to service Service sends POST request back to application in the middle of responding to the GET request Application, in the same state as when it made the GET request, responds to the POST request (sends document data) to service. Service sends data back to Application (responding to original GET request) Application handles the rest... The use case is this: I was thinking how can I make Yahoo Pipes POST data? Specifically, I want it to be able to update Google Docs when a user makes a change locally (on a custom editor). So user edits doc, makes GET request to Yahoo Pipes, Pipes makes a POST request back to App to get the document (Pipes can only make this type of POST request), App sends doc, Pipes formats data according to the Google API, Pipes responds to GET request with Google API formatted XML, App makes the post request. Theoretically, how would I accomplish this? It seems that I need to create a separate ruby Process for the GET request, and when Pipes sends the POST request, I find that process and send its output, then I'm stuck. This would cut out the need for a database for this particular case (I could save the stuff temporarily in a database, but that doesn't seem right). Any ideas? This would make it so I don't have to format things to the Google API in ruby, I could leave that to Pipes.

  Hey all - I'm running SL4 on VS2010. I've got an app that authenticates via a web service to SPROC in my db. Unfortunately this is not WCF/WCF RIA, as I'm inheriting the DB/services from my client. This works perfectly inside of a browser. I'm attempting to move this OOB, and it's at this point that my authentication fails. Here's the steps I took... 1) SL App Properties Enable running app Out of Browser 2) SL App Properties Out of Browser Settings Require elevated trust when running OOB If i set a breakpoint on my logon button click, I see the service call is being made. However, if I step through it (or set a breakpoint on the actual logon web service), the code never gets that far. Here's the block it fails on: public LogonSVC.LogonResponse EndLogon(System.IAsyncResult result) { object[] _args = new object[0]; LogonSVC.LogonResponse _result = ((LogonSVC.LogonResponse)(base.EndInvoke("Logon", _args, result))); return _result; } I know using Elevated Trust means the crossdomain.xml isn't necessary. I know that Orchard uses Autofac for dependency injection and this is causing me problems since I never worked with DI before.   I'm using the Windows Launcher development environment for Google App Engine. I have downloaded Django 1.1.2 source, and un-tarrred the "django" subdirectory to live within my application directory (a peer of app.yaml) At the top of each .py source file, I do this: import settings import os os.environ["DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE"] = 'settings' In my file settings.py (which lives at the root of the app directory, as well), I do this: DEBUG = True TEMPLATE_DIRS = ('html') INSTALLED_APPS = ('filters') import os os.environ["DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE"] = 'settings' from google.appengine.dist import use_library use_library('django', '1.1') from django.template import loader Yes, this looks a bit like overkill, doesn't it? I only use django.template. I don't explicitly use any other part of django. However, intermittently I get one of two errors: 1) Django complains that DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE is not defined. 2) Django complains that common.html (a template I'm extending in other templates) doesn't exist. 95% of the time, these errors are not encountered, and they randomly just start happening. Once in that state, the local server seems "wedged" and re-booting it generally fixes it. What's causing this to happen, and what can I do about it? How can I even debug it? • Google Spreadsheet API problem: memory exceeded

  Hi guys, Don't know if anyone has experience with the Google Spreadsheets API or the Zend_GData classes but it's worth a go: When I try to insert a value in a 750 row spreadsheet, it takes ages and then throws an error that my memory limit (which is 128 MB!) was exceeded. I also got this when querying all records of this spreadsheet but this I can imaging because it's quite a lot of data. But why does this happen when inserting a row? That's not too complex, is it?   I am stuck with an issue with IIS 7.0. I need someone's help to find resolution on this, as this is very urgent requirement for us. Scenario I am trying to host the service in my server (Windows Server 2008 R2 and IIS 7.0) and my client is running in the XP machine with IIS 5.1. Few of my request sent from client get successful response and for few request I am getting the below exception in Visual studio when I try to debug. Exception in Visual studio 2010 An error occurred while receiving the HTTP response to This could be due to the service endpoint binding not using the HTTP protocol. This could also be due to HTTP request context being aborted by the server (possibly due to the service shutting down). See the server logs for more details. When referred to the server event viewer log I got the below events(Application error and System warning) during the above exception. Under System logs - Warning A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' suffered a fatal communication error with the Windows Process Activation Service. The process id was '5372'. The data field contains the error number. • Oracle ODBC x64 - getting 0 when selecting a number(9) column

  I'm having a really weird problem with a third party web service that uses an ODBC connection to Oracle 10.2.0.3.0. I've written a .NET client that generates the same SQL as the web service so I can find out what's going on. The web service is hosted by IIS 6 that's in x64 mode so we use Oracle x64 client. The oracle client version is 10.2.0.1.0. I have a table that looks like this (I've removed some columns and names): SQL> describe tablename; Name Null? Type ----------------------------------------- -------- ---------------------------- KOD VARCHAR2(30) ORDNING NUMBER(5) AVGIFT NUMBER(9) I then in SQL*Plus issue the following statement: SELECT KOD as kod, AVGIFT as riskPoang FROM tablename Where upper(KODTYP) = 'OBJLIVSV_RISKVERKSAMTYP' ORDER BY ORDNING And I get the following result: KOD RISKPOANG ------------------------------ ---------- Hög risk 55 Mellan risk 35 Låg risk 15 Mycket låg risk 5 But when I execute the exact same SQL using the same DSN on the same machine I get this: Values Kod: Hög risk RiskPoäng: 0 Kod: Mellan risk RiskPoäng: 0 Kod: Låg risk RiskPoäng: 0 Kod: Mycket låg risk RiskPoäng: 0 If I first cast the number to varchar and then back again to number, like this: SELECT KOD as kod, to_number(to_char(AVGIFT, '99'), '9999999999') as riskPoang FROM tablename Where upper(KODTYP) = 'OBJLIVSV_RISKVERKSAMTYP' ORDER BY ORDNING I get the correct result: Values Kod: Hög risk RiskPoäng: 55 Kod: Mellan risk RiskPoäng: 35 Kod: Låg risk RiskPoäng: 15 Kod: Mycket låg risk RiskPoäng: 5 Has anyone else experiences this? It's incredibly annoying and I'm completely stuck and not sure what to do next.
