  • IIS 7.5, ASP.NET, impersonation, and access to C:\Windows\Temp

    Summary: One of our web applications requires write access to C:\Windows\Temp. However, no matter how much I weaken the NTFS permission, procmon shows ACCESS DENIED. Background (which might or might not be relevant for the problem): We are using OLEDB to access an MS Access database (which is located outside of C:\Windows\Temp). Unfortunately, this OLEDB driver requires write access to the user profile's TEMP directory (which happens to be C:\Windows\Temp when running under IIS 7.5), otherwise the dreaded "Unspecified Error" OleDbException is thrown. See KB 926939 for details. I followed the steps in the KB article, but it doesn't help. Details: This is the output of icacls C:\Windows\Temp. For debugging purposes I gave full permissions to Everyone. C:\Windows\Temp NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)(F) CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) BUILTIN\IIS_IUSRS:(OI)(CI)(S,RD) BUILTIN\Users:(CI)(S,WD,AD,X) BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)(F) Everyone:(OI)(CI)(F) However, this is the screenshot of procmon: Desired Access: Generic Read/Write, Delete Disposition: Create Options: Synchronous IO Non-Alert, Non-Directory File, Random Access, Delete On Close, Open No Recall Attributes: NT ShareMode: None AllocationSize: 0 Impersonating: MYDOMAIN\myuser

    I see that version 2 of MVC.NET now has a RequireHttps attribute, which works great for me. However, what's a good strategy for turning the effect off? For example, I want to use Https on some pages, but regular Http on others. Should I create my own RequireHttp attribute? EDIT: I'm using my own RequireHttp attribute, and it works fine, but I'm wondering if there's some built-in functionality in MVC.NET Version 2 that I'm missing. EDIT 2: I must not have been clear. My question concerns the following: if you use RequireHttps, then any requests after that will be over Https even if the Controller or Action is not decorated with RequireHttps. Unless I'm mistaken, you need a 2nd attribute such as RequireHttp to redirect requests to Http instead of Https.

    Well I am new to this ORM stuff. We have to create a large project. I read about LINQ to SQL. will it be appropriate to use it in the project of high risk. i found no problem with it personally but the thing is that there will be no going back once started.So i need some feedback from the ORM gurus here at the MSDN. Will entity framework will be better? (I am in doubt about LINK to SQL because I have read and heard negative feedback here and there) I will be using MVC2 as the framework. So please give the feedback about LINQ to SQL in this regard. Q2) Also I am a fan of stored procedure as they are precomputed and fasten up the thing and I have never worked without them.I know that LINQ to SQL support stored procedures but will it be feasible to give up stored procedure seeing the beautiful data access layer generated with little effort as we are also in a need of rapid development. Q3) If some changes to some fields required in the database in LINK to SQL how will the changes be accommodated in the data access layer.

    When I hover on a static menu item that has a dynamic menu, the hover styles are in effect but once I start navigating the dynamic menu the static menu item goes back to the non-hover styles. Does anyone know how to make them stick until I stop ''using' that menu? I tried the 'selected' static menu item styles but that doesn't work - if I use them, even when I stop navigating the menu the last selected static menu item will display the selected style - after using the menu I want the styles to revert to the normal styles....

Using the standard edit-views in mvc, I get only strings and booleans (not shown below) mapped. Many of the examples I find on google utilizes early releases of the mvc framework whereas I use the official 1.0 release.     I have a FormsAuthentication cookie that is persistent and works independently in a development, test, and production environment. I have a user that can authenticate, the user object is created, the authentication cookie is added to the response: 'Custom object to grab the TLD from the url authCookie.Domain = myTicketModule.GetTopLevelDomain(Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_HOST")) FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(authTicket.Name, False) Response.SetCookie(authCookie) The user gets processed a little bit to check for a first time login, security questions, etc, and is then redirected with the following tidbit: Session.Add("ForceRedirect", "/FirstTimeLogin.aspx") Response.Redirect("~/FirstTimeLogin.aspx", True) With a debug break, I can verify that the cookie collection holds both a cookie not related to authentication that I set for a different purpose and the formsauthentication cookie. Then the next step in the process occurs at the ApplicationAuthenticateRequest in the global.asax: Sub Application_AuthenticateRequest(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Dim formsCookieName As String = myConfigurationManager.AppSettings("FormsCookieName") Dim authCookie As HttpCookie = Request.Cookies(formsCookieName) At this point, for this ONE user authCookie is nothing. I have 15,000 other users who are not impacted in this manner. However, for one user the cookie just vanishes without a trace. I've seen this before with w3wp.exe exceptions, state server exceptions and other IIS process related exceptions, but I'm getting no exceptions in the event log. w3wp.exe is not crashing, the state server has some timeouts but they appear unrelated (as verified by timestamps) and it only happens to this one user on this one domain (this code is used across 2 different TLDs with approximately 10 other subdomains). One avenue I'm investigating is that the cookie might just be too large. I would think that there would be a check for the size of the cookie going into the response, and I wouldn't think it would impact it this way. Any ideas why the request might dumping the cookie? NOTE: The secondary cookie I mentioned that I set also gets dumped (and it's very tiny). EDIT-NOTE: The session token is NOT lost when this happens. However, since the authentication cookie is lost, it is ignored and replaced on a subsequent login.

    I experiment with a lot of open source software and I've noticed a fair amount of server type applications in the open source world use libevent to facilitate event-based processing rather than spawn multiple threads to handle requests. I also do a lot of .NET programming (it's my core job function), and I'm interested in learning how libevent relates to the .NET event model. Are events in .NET the equivalent of libevent for C programs? Should I try to learn libevent and attempt to use it in custom .NET server applications or is using the standard .NET event model basically the same thing?

  • modalpopupextender and commas appearing in my textbox asp.net

    Some weird stuff is happening, I am converting an application that used to use javascript to open another web page in a tiny window for data input to use a ModalPopupExtender. It seems to work fine, but in the OK event, when I do txtData.Text (the textbox in my modal popup), it comes back with a comma before the data, so if you type "Rabbit", it comes back as ",Rabbit". Also when I use it multiple times, in another place where I might click to show it, and type "Fish", it starts coming back with stuff like ",Rabbit,,Fish" I don't know why or how to stop it from doing this... any ideas?

    I have a grid view with AllowSorting set to true. I get an event onsorting when a sortable header is clicked on. the handler has a parameter "GridViewSortEventArgs e" which has a SortDirection property on it. regardless of how many times you click on the same heading, the SortDirection is always Ascending. I think I'm missing something, like a way to tell the grid "now you are sorted based on column one and in ascending order", so that next time the grid sees a click on the "column one" heading, it decides to go descending. any help appreciated.     Hi guys, I have a new table that hold old passwords, I need to check if there is a match. If there is a match I need the ChangePassword contol to NOT change the password. I need to tell the user that this password was used and pic a new one. I can't seem to be able to interrupt the control from changing the password. Maybe I am using the wrong event. When I navigate to the directory c:\temp\ and double-click on the test.zip file; it opens right up. My problem seems only to be with the download. The code above executes without any issue. A file download dialog is presented. I can chose to either save or open. If I try to open the file from the dialog, or save it and then open it. I get the following dialog message: The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted. For Response.ContentType I've tried: application/x-compressed application/x-zip-compressed application/x-gzip-compresse application/octet-stream application/zip The zip file is being created with some prior code (that I'm sure is working fine due to my ability to open the created file directly) using: Ionic.zip http://www.codeplex.com/DotNetZip

    I click on a link from one page that does a redirect to another page (Response.Redirect(page.aspx)). The browser churns for about 30 seconds and the page displays. I'm trying to track down why it takes so long to load the page. The page hosts two other custom controls. I have commented out the lines of code for each and both controls, and the page still takes about 30 seconds to load. I've set breakpoints on the Page_Load event for each of the controls as well as page.aspx and it also takes about 30 seconds from clicking the link with the Response.Redirect to the first break point. I loaded up task manager and clicked on the link. I notice aspnet_wp.exe and csc.exe run during this 30 second time frame. I'm wondering if there are some sort of code-behind shinanigans going on while I'm waiting for the page to load. This only occurs the first time I click on the link. Afterwards, it's not as slow. I've googled but there's not a lot of useful information about this. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, ---Dan---
